The art and science of persuading in writing. - Copywriting!

A superb copywriter is a person who will be able to write a stunning sales letter and persuade it's readers and generate a ton of sales with the use of their text. At least that's what most people tend to believe is the "main thing" for a copywriter. - And I do agree but not quite to 100%, but anyhow..

For how long do you think a person will have to train, practice, study and write to be able to declare themselves as a copywriter? - There's a saying that you can become an expert at anything you want by spending 10,000 hours.

Do you think that anyone can become a super-copywriter? - I think it's possible but I also think that people with sales skills will have an easier path to become one.

How much training do you think one have to do?

I think a copywriter needs to read and inform about all the latest trends in content-building but also be familiar with social networks and SEO. You simply can't declare yourself a modern copywriter if you aren't into social media or content optimization.
Most copywriters I've seen that work for a digital agency is also social media marketing experts, creating fb campaigns, fb ads, twitter ads and taking care and administrating social pages on multiple platforms.

Unfortunately, old school copywriters are having a hard time adapting to these new online changes, is very hard to keep up when social media platforms and search engines update their policies and algorithms every month!

Yes I must say it is hard keeping up with all the latest trends as it is, but I think if you grew up old school it must be exceptionally hard now.

Great topic Andre. I think that the amount of time would really vary depending on the person. I also think that natural ability comes into this a lot.

Some people will just never be a great copywriter no matter how much time they spend on it. I don't want to be negative but I have had some people make claims about their skills, ability and experience yet I fail to see how that person managed to pass school with such bad writing skills.

Other people just have that natural ability and anything they write is captivating. There is a bit difference between writing a great piece of content that readers love and writing content that sells. I think having the ability to mix these two skills is not always easy!

And some people learn and gain the skills.... I think it is a bit tough to say how long it would take to gain those skills.

When I was in college, our professor in advertising subject said that a copywriter is the equivalent of a glib-tongued talker. If you have the gift of gab, you are good in convincing people. Likewise in writing, a good copywriter can write statements that are convincing the reader of the purpose. I have to agree that not anyone can be a good copywriter in terms of convincing the reader. You have to be gifted maybe.

You can be gifted at convincing people and you can as well learn the act of convincing people. The aim is to ensure that they buy the things that you are selling or helping someone else to sell. This is the reason I feel that the work of copywriting is one of the most difficult we can find around.

I don't think that everyone can be good at copywriting. Those who are experts in sales and marketing will for sure excel in copywriting. You need some experience and exposure in sales to succeed in this role. I don't see myself as a successful copywriter. I am not that good at convincing others.

The world needs more of copywriters for they are the people that are going to make the businesses we have aroud get better and all that. I've got a pal that makes convincing sales copies that would make you buy even something that you have at home and that makes me believe that we need copywriters in the current world that we are building at the moment.

I disagree. You can have fantastic sales skills, but not be able to put your thoughts down on paper. Writing especially copywriting is hard and not for the faint hearted. Like all writing the more you practice, the better you get. You have to remember that we all have different things we are good at. You may be good at writing but not at copywriting You also have to have a small affinity for it if you are to become one of the best. But I believe that everyone can learn basic copywriting and draft copy that will convert to sales in different degrees which depend on the strength of your copy.

To be a good copywriter you must first be a seasoned sales and marketing man. Not all writers can do copywriting because they lack the offline experience in convincing people and groups of people to buy a particular product or service. Most good copywriters I know are ex sales personnel and ex advertising professionals.
