5 Way to Evoke Fear and Command Respect in Your Writings

Do you wish that people would take your writings and ramblings more seriously? Do you want to evoke fear and command respect in the things you write about? I'm not talking about fear as though they would be too afraid to read it like some Stephen King novel! But fear as in respect. Well to help with that, here's 6 ways to evoke fear and command respect in your writings and authorings!

1. Use the Senses to Drag the Reader into Your Character's World.

If you know anything about the senses, you'll know that people can be enticed along into something by leaving morsel after morsel until finally they are in the danger zone where you can pounce on them! Not literally of course! But in a virtual, meta-physical sense. Use peoples own sense of curiosity and desire for juicy readings by tempting them with small things at first before giving them the big bone!

2. Use Visceral Reactions to Draw Readers into Your Characters Emotions.

Anything visceral is anything very vivid and clear. By using visceral reactions you'll draw the reader into your characters own emotions in a way that seems very real to them. As real to them as it is real to the character that whatever is happening to. It basically just means being very clear and descriptive about how the character is feeling on an emotional level.

3. Let Readers Identify with Your Characters Before Connecting Emotionally.

Before you try to get people to connect to your characters using visceral reactions, first try to find ways you can get the reader to identify and relate to your character. This can be done by talking about some of the personality traits that character has, his/her fashion sense or style etc or something. By doing this, your readers will feel much more drawn to those characters when something happens to them.

4. Use Active Voices and Actionable Words.

By using an active voice and actionable words you'll be able to show how your character reacts to the situations he/she comes across. Active words are basically words that have intent and reason and purpose behind them. And actionable words are words that mean they're about to do something or already are doing something. Like "I'm going to cut you in half with my sword!".

S. Use metaphors/similes and imagery.

No good story is without its metaphors, similes and imagery! In fact, the best novel books are very graphic and use a lot of metaphors, similes and imagery. And it's not hard to come up with them. So if possible, try to use these throughout your story to give people something else that makes the reading that much more fun to do!

Conclusion

It's not a very hard thing to write a novel. It can take some practice. But if you have a good story, it can almost write itself. But by knowing about these 5 Way to Evoke Fear and Command Respect in Your Writings, you'll likely go on to become a better, more interesting, more riveting and successful novelist and writer! 5 Way to Evoke Fear and Command Respect in Your Writings

Every suggestion you have mentioned here is good practice to engage a reader. Accomplishing each of the suggested concepts is not easy. Simply stating how a character is feeling or providing a detailed description of the character's actions is not enough. The reader has to care what the character thinks and does. You mentioned the importance of leading the reader to identify and relate to the character and this truly is the most important aspect of writing. I have read numerous short stories, novellas, and even full-length novels in which the author has gone into great detail while explaining motivations and actions but still did not provoke any interest. I believe the ability to portray characters as entities for the reader to care for is the hardest part of writing. Details do not always lead to interest from the reader. Many authors prompt great concern and interest in specific characters without using much detail or explanation at all. The Malazan Book of the Fallen is a great example of prompting very strong feelings without explaining every detail. The series is massive with an unbelievable array of characters and the author starts the series running full tilt. There is no detailed introduction or description of the characters' thoughts, it starts out with the reader trying to catch up and figure out what is happening. Although the series is huge, there is no drawn-out explanation for anything handed to the reader. The reader must actively engage and work to learn the plot, characters, world, and motivators but it works. The books grab the reader's attention from the first chapter and hold that attention through 10 massive novels and every bit of information is picked up along the way. It is an amazing talent that can achieve such a feat and authors who can develop this talent will be very successful no matter what they choose to write.

One writer in his lecture said that reading is a passive activity and a passive person definitely enjoys reading action words. And what is action words? Simple. Action words denote action. It is usually found in the dialogue or the sentence enclosed by quotations. But it can also be outside of the dialogue box. It’s not easy to write action words like depicting a scene where the hero is being chased by the villain. Of course, the hero should be running faster but the villain is faster and he is fast catching up. Isn’t it a bit exciting to read such a line?

I must admit that I never really write anything that is fiction. In my opinion this is the hardest kind of writing, there is. Developing characters is no walk in the pack. Yet done well can bring you a lot of success. A good example is the Author Shonda Rhimes, the writer of popular shows Greys Anatomy, Scandal , How to Get Away With Murder and the Author of the best selling Year of Yes. She says her job is to make up characters. She is feared in the writing world. She has 4 shows on ABC America.

Well, I think that writing a novel is a very difficult and challenging task for any writer who is less experienced. However, this post provides very good tips and guidelines for all the writers who are aspiring to write a novel on there own. I think that making the readers believe in the characters and engage them in the story at a deeper level is one of the most challenging jobs of a writer. If the writer is able to do it, then there are very high chances of achieving success.
