Lack of creativity: How do you solve this problem?

What inspires you to write? Have you ever thought about it?

Writing is not always such an easy task because sometimes one of the most important aspects simply doesn't come for us: inspiration (and all the writers who keep up themselves with frequent works suffer from it).
Suddenly, our mind is taken by a lack of creativity that makes us stop for a moment and think how we are going to create something new or continue to develop a work that is already being done.

Considering this scenario, how do you usually act to solve this kind of problem when it happens to you?

I actually employ a variety of methods to get the juices flowing when I run into writer;s block. If I am writing about a specific subject, I will do more research on it and try to expand my knowledge. Immersing yourself into the vocabulary and world of your topic can really spark new ideas. I also go to my personal library and read the writers who have inspired me over the years. Music tends to help as well. Another very useful way to spark creativity is to take a long walk, Along a scenic vista, you can find inspiration through the rhythm of your own footsteps. There are also a lot of sites out there that give you writing prompts or generate writing prompts for you. Check this one out: http://thinkwritten.com/365-creative-writing-prompts/.

Making the decision to stay immersed in the content you are working on can be relatively complicated because depending on your mood it can make things worse (but it's certainly a great idea). I've never been through this problem, but I've seen many people having to face it.

Plus, musics and long walks are really effective any time.

When I am out of idea, reading helps me most. Either I read the forum sites where questions are asked, form them into my own articles and reading from the magazines with lots of information. You can get lots of ideas by just reading.

I just love I what I write and have fun doing it. Do take it harder because that can may harm your work. Just take it easy as usual and I just use my happy memories to inspire me better about writing.

To be very blunt about it, I do not believe in inspiration. I regard that word as a thinly veiled excuse would-be writers use to justify not having words on a page. It is nice when an idea comes to you easily. In those moments, the words seem to flow out of you from some other source as though you were merely a conduit for some higher intelligence. But writing is a craft, first and foremost. Like any craft, you either develop it or you don't. Inspiration is 100% unnecessary to the process. My old art teacher used to bark at me, "Get something on the canvas!" when I would be struggling with a new painting. It didn't matter what, to him. He just wanted to see forward progress as that is what leads to inspiration when Providence fails. And Providence does routinely fail.

I got your point (it's kinda interesting), but I believe the inspiration to create things doesn't appear out of the blue... You know, as if it were a magic trick.

Perhaps, the nomenclature changes from person to person (considering the concept of "inspiration" may be different for each person), but I know its always somewhere.

Painterly,
It could just be a trick of the mind, or my own brain chemistry, but I do feel that I have been struck with inspiration before. There is a distinctly different feeling or sensation that I get from just thinking and working through a problem and from getting struck by lightning, so to speak, by an idea or concept or group of phrasings. I totally understand what you are saying here, though, and creating any content in any medium should be a discipline and hard work, but I still must say that, at times, I get struck by a very intense "message" or delivery of sensation and information coupled together that I call "inspiration". I mean, what else do you call that?

Well, i do believe in inspiration, most of the things I have accomplished in life mostly come from inspirations and I do get inspiration about a subject matter, i ponder on when i want to write.
Most of the successful writers were successful do to the inspiration they got, in one way or the other. And how they capitalized on it

I respect the every single opinion, from everyone, after all... Eeach person has a very particular world running in their minds, but I think not just writing - but living - without inspiration is something very complicated (at least in my point of view).

I think having what to believe, having a source where it is possible to take knowledge, ideas is something essential.

I agree with what you said that writing is a craft. It is. There are some people who are, let's say, gifted in the art of writing, however, even if you are gifted and you do not exercise that gift on a daily basis (or even on a weekly basis) then that gift won't get you nowhere.

But I still believe that inspiration still has a key point in any form of art, otherwise your work doesn't have the heart or the emotions to it. Because once you are inspired, you write more, you create more, there's life to what you do. Once you look at your work, it reminds you of a fragment of the past. Inspiration and art when combined proves our humanity. Well, that's my opinion.

I don't often face with the lack of inspiration but I did have the so called "writer's block" a few times because I burned myself out. I was constantly writing and I just didn't feel inspired anymore. It felt hard and forced to write so what I did was take a few days off - no writing whatsoever. Just relaxing and doing everything that I enjoy. Sort of like taking some personal time off from your job? It sounds weird but it works. When you do things that you enjoy and when you are stressing yourself out, you easily become motivated and inspired again. You just can't force it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

When you feel you are not well, deciding to force your writing (or any other type of activity) can be the worst of decisions.

It's almost a certainty (let's say 99,9% of the times, haha) that you work will be well bellow what you can do and the quality of it will be compromised (which automatically makes the situation even worse).

Putting your favorite hobbies up to date is always a good idea to try to solve this problem.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

peachpurple
yes I agree with you. When you are down or sick, it is better to stay off the writing stance until your mood comes in. Either watch movies, go for a walk, get into hobbies, naturally your mood comes in and so are your thinking cap is back on again.

Tronia,
This is something I worry about all the time. Everything I do, all day, all the time, revolves around the act of writing. I have gotten to a point in the day, after writing and corresponding for hours, where i do not even think i could spell my own name. Getting away from writing is one of the best ways in the world to improve your writing, ironically enough. I appreciate and identify with your post here.

It's difficult because I feel that creativity is something you are born with. I believe that it can be difficult to become a creative person if you lack creativity. It doesn't mean that it is not possible but I do think with the majority of people, you are either creative or not creative. You cannot change that. If that is the case then I think the best thing to do to get inspiration is to just read other content and try to get some ideas from that. Of course, don't steal content but try to get ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Painterly
The propensity for enjoying creativity may be naturally occurring, but creativity itself is a learned trait. No one is born knowing how to do much more than cry and eat. Everything else is acquired through effort, learning from failure, and building upon successes. Even a person who may not be naturally well suited for creative endeavors can train a specific skill to a level of acceptable proficiency if they are willing to make the sacrifices necessary. What most people call inspiration is really just enjoyment of the process. That is certainly a desirable position to find yourself in, but it is not necessary. Most people end up in jobs they don't particularly enjoy. You cannot really help whether or not you find satisfaction in any particular effort, but success is a result of choices.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DarthHazard
Of course. Anyone can train and learn a specific skill. I did mention that it is not impossible for anyone to become creative if they do consider themselves as someone who is not really creative. But I think a lot of people are born creative which definitely helps them out a lot. I think natural creativity that you probably inherit from your parents is better than learning and training to become creative.

This is something that my friends and I have come to discuss on many occasions. We're creative enough when it comes to filmmaking concepts and story ideas, but we don't have the knowledge on how to effectively advance our stories or make them compelling. We've found that these smaller aspects within filmmaking take a different type of creativity than what we're used to.

We're all "idea guys" but don't know how to develop the plethora of ideas we have, which is what stumps us. We've come to understand that it's just about it writing, writing, and writing. Just doing it more will help you get accustomed to it, and in our case, hopefully increase our creativity on the matter!

DarthHazard,
This is a heavily debated topic, whether or not we are born with creativity or whether it is conditioned through nurturing, but I do tend to agree with you that some people are naturally more creative than others--maybe it is a genetic thing? I am sure there are some brain studies out there regarding this which I have not read or seen. However, if you do not nurture your natural born creativity through practice and push yourself to further and further heights with it, then I am pretty sure it will fade or even disappear. Of course, one should absolutely NEVER steal the content or creative projects of others.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Authord
Yeah, you are actually not far from the truth, because with what i have seen and researched, creativity is something that, comes from the gene, some are born with it. But that doesn't mean you can't be creative.
I think that as far as you are a homo-sapien, you are creative, but most people tend to be born with a higher threshold of creativity and some develop theirs through meditation or other ways .

I have tons of recipe ideas but lazy to write them out. I don't need any inspiration to write because I had to cook daily, 6 days a week, twice a day. Hence, my recipe blog doesn't face lack of ideas or creativity problem. The only problem is me, I am just too lazy to write.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think in your case, your field of writing is something that is undergoing constant changes and offering the creation of articles in a more facilitated way. If you want, every day you can write something new without having to think too much... But the problem, as you yourself acknowledge, is your laziness, haha!

What have you done to try to solve this?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

galegatling
Finally! Someone who speaks about laziness! Yes to all! I am lazy to write not because I don't have an inspiration, but simply because I know when I start to write and stop for a while, I will stop there for sure because I easily get tired. Maybe because I am working the whole day and sometimes wouldn't even have time to touch my computer and during the weekends also, I am busy with family and stuff so it's really hard. I am jealous to you guys who have a lot of free time. I mean, I know I am just making excuses. @_@

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
There's a huge difference between being lazy and being spread too thinly across too many things. That is the definite plight of the writer--finding time and energy to actually do it. A lot of my friends apply for grants and stipends to take time off work at some isolated or exotic locale in order to finish their projects. Spending time with family is essential to a good and loving life, and I would not sacrifice my family time for my writing, but if I am honest, I must admit, ideas of writing and wanting to write always distract me from my work and my loved ones. I can't help it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

galegatling
Nobody can I guess. It's just how humans react to such obligations and when it comes to families, we don't even think twice. I mean, I don't know about the others but when family calls, I would immediately drop whatever I am doing during that time because I know that it can wait and family moments are sometimes rare.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Although it's not something everyone likes to admit, laziness is a harm that affects everyone. No matter when it will happen, sooner or later it will happen to you, haha (not just with the writers, but with all the others professions).

An aggravating factor for those who only live having writing as a profession is that laziness can be very expensive.

Very agree! Writing is not an easy thing to do; it takes so much effort, creativity, originality, and imagination. There are times that our brain lost it focus because there are many ideas and thoughts going through our mind, it makes hard to put into words like we run out of ideas. This is what you feel when you find it difficult to write. You just don’t know what to write, you’re not in the mood, and you don’t know when you will be in the mood.

Writer’s block can be very dangerous, especially if you don’t deal with it quickly. Below are some quick solutions to overcoming writer’s block.

  • Take some rest. Make sure you’re getting adequate sleep, and that you’re not over-stressing yourself.
  • Read, read and read. You can’t produce without consuming. You need information to thrive, so make sure you read, read and read some more.
  • Exercise regularly. Sometimes, the problem is with you being inactive. The flow of blood through your brain can have a lot to do with how creative you are, so make sure you are getting enough exercise. Exercise makes us healthy and physically fit. It puts us in the right frame of mind.
  • Don’t Write. Sometimes, you’re experiencing writer’s block because you have been writing for so long that it’s killing you. Try not to write for a whole day. Go out there, enjoy the world, see friends and have a lot of fun. You will be amazed at how refreshed and productive you can be at the end of the day.

This is all really great advice here, and, really, you have to just write long enough to get to know your own habits, needs, and patterns as a writer, right? Your advice to not write is so true--sometimes I have been writing for so long all day that everything just starts to look the same on the screen. I know then that it is time for me to take a much needed break because, most likely, the material I am pumping out is not any good and uninspired anyway. Regular exercising of the body through physical activity and regular exercising of the brain through reading, as you suggested above, are also wonderful ideas and remedies for this stagnant mental state which can hit all of us.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
Great tips! I practice all of them whenever necessary.

I think our body and our mind always warn us when we are about to have a "mental block", but we can hardly ever realize it before it actually happens. But once we find the way to solve the problem, everything gets easier.

I think the solution might be on two opposite sides of the spectrum depending on your personality. The first would be to write whatever comes to your mind in some sort of stream-of-consciousness-like text in which you just let go and don't care about the quality or the content. You might end up eventually writing something that could give you a good idea for something more meaty in the future. The second alternative is to just stop writing and focus on something else: you could go hiking, go out with some friends or just relax at home. Once you have a clear head you may be able to start writing again. Reading a lot is definitely part of both solutions, though.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Tronia
Wouldn't the first option that you have described also be referred to as sort of a brain storming? Since you let whatever just flow through your mind and onto the piece of paper.

Either way, that is actually something that I didn't try when I lacked creativity. It would definitely work though because the brain storming process is often used even in various companies to come up with unique ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I did this with a huge project recently, and then I went back and edited it for clarity, correctness, and coherence, and the poems I have extracted from this stream of consciousness mess are starting to get regularly published in journals. I had to just let it all flow out, and then, after I had a little bit of time to be objective towards what I had written, I was able to go back and find the good in it and then give what was good in it real form and direction.

Well, confidence helps me a lot in been creative when writing, that feeling evolving in me that i can do this, keeps me writing, when I don't know what to write,, i will just place my hand on the keyboard and start typing, about anything that bumps up on my mental plane, and nature takes over from there.
It's all about confidence, confidence is part of creativity that often gets ignored. Yet it’s confidence that allows creative exploration and insights to occur in the first place.
An artist who sits down to paint but is thoroughly convinced that she “isn’t really a painter” is already heading down a path where options for creation are limited. At the end of the day, she’s more inclined to wind up with a blank canvas and a headache than an inspirational piece of artwork.

I take a break from what I'm working on just to take a breather. I know that if I'm at a loss for creativity or angle on a project, sitting and staring at it for longer will only make me more stressed out and limit my ability to think of something truly creative. It's far better for me to take a walk, listen to some music, or watch a TV show and just let my mind wander to other places for a bit.

More often than not, I'll find I'm more prepared to work on whatever job it was once I've returned to the computer from my break. I'll do this at work all the time. If I can't think of how to develop a video script, I'll take a walk around the college's campus, get some fresh air, maybe chat with some students or staff, and then return to work and see what kind of headway I can make,

Based on experience, whenever I ran out of ideas or creativity with what am currently doing or what am planning to do I usually stop thinking at all. It's like I leave everything behind, knowing I can't do anything at the moment for I don't have enough ideas and creativity on my mind yet. I let myself take a break, relax and sleep awhile. Sometimes I get to dream of things that luckily involved of what is making me stress or when I was spacing out ideas just come to my mind. This sometimes works like a wonder to me. But it doesn't happen to me all the time.

I have a list that contains topics I plan to write about in the future, so I'm almost never out of ideas since the list has been growing over the years and I still keep putting in topics everyday at a rate that is faster than I can write them. Unless I start writing ten articles a day, I don't think I would ever run out with this current cycle I'm in. However, whenever I do find myself wanting to write about something completely different that is not from my list, I tend to just go outside and run or walk, or go out for a drive, where I can focus on something else, and that helps free my brain to let the creativity come in. If I am focused on driving, I tend to just randomly come up with ideas, and I just make sure I am ready to park and write it down either on my phone or on a notebook.

I think this technique of "storing" ideas is one of the most efficient because it's really hard to run out of ideas when you have - and maintain - a well-updated list. On the other hand, I think if there isn't a certain discipline, the lists will never stop being simple lists.

Large doses of strong hallucinogens. NO don't take that seriously, I advise against any form of drug use (my lawyer told me to say that).

But in all seriousness, there are a number of things I do to get the creative juices flowing. One thing I do is meditate. When I meditate it helps clear my mind of a lot of mental clutter, and when I can think clearly, I can also compose creative thoughts a lot easier. It's like dumping out a bucket of Legos with a bunch of random pieces, and then organizing them so you can clearly see the individual parts and build something.

I also like to watch YouTube videos and read work from other writer's as viewing/reading other peoples' content can ultimately inspire me with new ideas as well.

I guess, what you can do is to read lots of stories/blogs of others and then try to get some idea or gather every idea that you've read and try to come up with a new story that would look like it's your own creation, but really an inspiration from other stories that you've read and just combine them. I've seen some blogs that came from familiar lines and stories that have been incorporated to make a new one. Well, that's just my idea and I know it's not a good one but since it's hard to come up with your own story, this is much better to have than nothing at all.

I mostly only get a block when I'm trying to force it. Most of the time, when I am just focusing on something else, ideas come to me very easily, and this is why I make sure I write down any idea that comes to mind so when I finally am sitting down to do the work, I have something to refer to and it isn't as difficult to generate ideas anymore. Sometimes, if I am not able to rely on my notes and I am not able to come up with something quickly, I just try and do something else and usually from that something does come into mind because I'm not trying too hard to force myself to come up with an idea.

Lack of creativity is caused by reckless spending of time, also it might be because of a person not wanting to do something, lack of creativity is when someone don't male use of his/her own capabilities.

A person without down syndrome shouldn't complain about being uncreative, creativity have to do with the will and zeal of someone, if some one can not be productive then they lack creative to do so. Everyone have creativity it just depends on how you make it work, creativity can not just find you when you are not doing anything, be busy with your life all the time then the inspiration leads to you having that creativity.

I have this writing principle it's " if nothing's coming in then there's nothing coming out."
When I have any difficulty in writing something, just go out and travel a little. It doesn't mean that I'll be taking a vacation or something, I just need some fresh air with some old fashioned R n R.
I usually spend the day going to several malls and event venues, dining out, talking with friends, watching a movie, see the latest tech gadgets, window shopping, attending events and symposiums. When night comes, i'll be with friends in a bar with music playing drinking the night away.
And on the next day I'm ready to write with my body and mind refreshed and full of ideas.

Can't wait til my next writers block.

I usually just meditate and clear my mind... Force writing is not healthy for me, it actually affects your content and the way with words you apply. One way to ensure content quality is always go with your objective and create highlight notes. This way you may ran out of words but you can check your notes to open some ideas. Second is meditate and clear your mind in times of mood swings or stress, this way your mood will not be your content. Lastly, look for a different perspective on your content...

I would say that taking short breaks and doing something like yoga or meditation which calms the mind will help you to face such a phase.

I do every leisure stuff that I normally do. Watch tv and movies, listen to music, read books, play games, talk with your closest friend. It'll just come. These activies works for me.
