Phone Interview or Face to Face Interview

Do you prefer to have a phone interview or a walk in interview where you can meet the interviewer face to face?

I prefer to have a face to face interview rather than to wait at home for the phone call. Most companies prefer to filter out the applicants through phone interview but ignoring the applicants waiting the whole day isn't a good way. Better to reject than to be left hanging in the air.

I prefer having a personal conversation and I find it more difficult to sell myself through a phone conversation although if I needed to I think I could manage that too or at least I would give it my best shot. If I am there then I would feel like I could present myself more completely as I can look the recruiter in the eye and show them more of what I would be able to bring to the table. Ultimately, though, I think it's just a matter of being the right fit for the job and if you are not the type they are looking for then the type of interview wouldn't really matter.

I agree with you that the type of interview won't matter. It all depends if they found what they are looking for in you. If it is optional, I suggest that someone should choose what they are good at.

I agree with you, I was so worried sick when I was expecting a phone call interview from the prospective employer that I had sweat and got into anxiety that I felt nausea.

I actually feel the same way when it comes to this. I have never been a fan of phone calls in general because I feel like taking away the body language from a situation handicaps me when it comes to presenting myself in the best light possible. I know this may seem a bit manipulative to some people, but based on someone's body language, I can adjust my own personality in certain ways which in turn can help me seem more appealing to the interviewer. That benefit is taken away over the phone, and I'm ultimately left feeling more vulnerable to error than if I were there in person.

I totally agree with you. Seeing the facial expression of the person also helps you to check if he/she is sincere with what he/she says.

I agree, I also prefer personal face to face interviews because I can express myself more on it and I can sell myself more, I'm more comfortable speaking in person and one thing about personal interviews is the emotions when you're speaking to the interviewer, it's really different the energy is another thing about it.

I prefer face to face interview. It is easier to convince the employer that I deserve the position I applied for when I talk directly to them. I also prefer being asked questions by the person I am looking at. I can also see how they dressed and know what they expect.

I agree. You can show a lot more when you show yourself in person and it might increase your chances that otherwise might have been ignored or lost in a phone interview. Also, for me personally, what I hate about phone interviews is that they mostly don't have a schedule and can come at anytime, and I am the type that leaves my phone away from me for long periods of time so I don't always get to answer the important calls.

In most cases, this is dependent on the hiring practice of the company and not on the applicant's preferences. Not all companies conduct phone interviews but most, if not all, companies conduct face-to-face interview. The phone interview is usually done to help the company screen applicants and come up with a shortlist. The face-to-face interview is important to help them make the hiring decision. An applicant should be prepared for both types of interview.

Phone interview is good for those shy people but phone interview are not necessary for those high company because they know that phone interview is not challenge and they cannot see what is the ability of a certain person have. So I preferred to choose face to face interview.

"Phone interview is good for those shy people…"

I'm not really sure if this is universally true. I would definitely consider myself a shy person, as I somewhat lack in confidence and am quite introverted. Keeping that in mind, I'm notoriously bad at phone conversations because I lack the element of body language. I feel that if I can look at someone's face or posture, I have a better understanding of how they feel and what direction I should take the conversation. Without those cues, I get easily flustered at a simple change in tone and aren't sure how to appropriately react. This is all a bit exaggerated though, so as to emphasize the point.

Which ever is required to get a job done in my opinion. But if you are asking me my preference? I prefer phone interviews, as they're quicker and more efficient.

Lack of pressure and tension which comes with phone interview would be the main reason for my preference to it over face to face interview. If you haven't had a run in with a mean interviewer you won't understand what I mean by pressure and tension such face to face interview with such person comes with. So therefore, I would definitely like to save myself such brain and body stress with having a face to face interview and go with phone call interview.

Whichever requires for the interview to happen, I don't mind as long as I pass it with flying colors. We are not the ones to choose anyway since we are the ones in need of a job. But if I will leave to choose if ever they will let me, I'd go for the difficult one which is face to face. It brings a sense of eagerness and really serious to get the job, and so they can know me better.

That is true. I have never had the chance to choose which type of interview I would want, haha.

But I agree with you. I also prefer face-to-face... Even though that it might seem like it is more difficult but I think it has many good things about it as well.

Yeah, we can't really choose what kind of interview the job will offer us, so it's best to be prepared either way. Although certainly face to face can sound more difficult, but you can easily explain yourself if you make a mistake compared to talking over the phone.

I prefer face to face interview as I feel more comfortable to talk when I am facing the person. Moreover, with phone interview, there might be some interruptions that affect the quality of interview which we might not be able to handle well. I only had one phone interview before this, I actually found it quite weird and I might not have expressed myself well in the interview. Perhaps if I have more experience and practice in phone interview, I would perform better. Moreover, I also think it would be good to pay a visit to the company, so I know how the environment is in the work space and also the people working there. Sometimes I think the interview is not only for the company to choose us, we need to choose whether it's a good place for us to work there too. Hence, I think having face-to-face interview is better.

Yeah I see what you're saying, sometimes people participate in phone interviews with you while they're driving and stuff. Can get really difficult if their phone or connection isn't of high enough quality.

I have had both in the past and each option has its advantages and disadvantages.

i personally prefer the face-to-face interviews though. Sure, I am more nervous at first but at the same time, it is far easier to read the other person and see whether the interview is going well or not.

Also, I express myself with a lot of hand gestures so I feel like face-to-face communication is fuller and therefore better.

I want face to face interview so that I can see also the who will be asking me. And I can explain correctly about what I wanted to say and I can show them how confident I am about thins interview things unlike phone interview.

I prefer face to face interview as I find it easier to express myself that way. I don't feel confident while talking on the phone. I once had a surprise phone interview and on that day I was shopping. I had to go to a quiet spot and I was feeling very nervous. Fortunately, I was able to answer the questions and they called me for face to face interview afterwards. Many companies in my country very often don't notify you about the phone interview.

This is another thing I hate about phone interviews is that it can come at any time. I once got a call from a company I wanted to work in while I was away from my phone and I missed my opportunity. I would prefer something scheduled so I could be prepared because after all the work I am applying for requires a schedule and I wouldn't be on call anyway so why do that on my interview.

You're not wrong, but personally I have never had an interview where the date and time wasn't agreed on beforehand, because it's obviously better for both parties that way.

But yeah, I prefer face to face over phone or video call anyways, just much more intimate and telling in every way, but when you're applying overseas then you don't really have any options.

Actually I prefer phone interviews or Skype when the date and time have been agreed beforehand. It's convenient for me, I do not have to drive over and back just to get there. Plus, I could ask for a schedule when I am not working so there won't be damage my reputation in the previous company just in case I do not get the job. And it is not easy to take leave or absences from where I come from.

I agree face to face interviews are better, comfortable and more personable.

I hate doing phone interviews, almost all of the time the signal breaks up or the line goes dead.

Face to face interview would be the best option for me, like the first impression is always the first thing that an interviewer wants to see or know about the employee he/she would like to have. Like phone/smartphone interviews has so many cons or problems that can make your interview worst or even make you not qualified for it. One would be the internet connection(for smartphones), if the connections seems off then think of the worst possibilities that you can encounter during your interview. And lastly the video or audio(for smartphones) might go wrong and the interviewer might misunderstood what you are trying to explain or trying to say. But if you are that shy and wants to gain more confidence by just talking then the phone interview would be the best option you can do, for you to qualified on it.

Skype breaks up sometimes during interviews also. I can't tell you how many news interviews I've seen or news segments I've watched where three or four people are all in on a conversation, and someone's skype signal starts breaking up or dies completely.

I prefer to be face to face as you can see the reaction of interviewer and vice versa, as @peachpurple said that companies this days prefer face to face cause some people are great talker on the phone but on personal are a totally different person. Even video calls can be fake or caused interruptions. Beside the more you interview face to face the more you practice yourself talking to people which is a plus for professionalism.

Face to face is the best way to get to know the other one. I know, technology, Internet, Apps, or whatever any other platform, are amazing helpers when you have to save long distances or schedule issues, but honestly that doesn't show how people really are. Someone can impersonate a person, or you are not able to see his actual reactions, or maybe that person is not qualified enough.

Nice point, there are so many scams online that makes other kind of interviews difficult, face to face will enable you to be prepared and gives you an higher advantage.

I had the chance to see a very bad example of this, I used to work in a center where a new CEO started doing online interviews. We recommended him to make a general interview online, and bring the ones that looked perfect for the job on a face to face encounter. But, he rejected the idea, hired 2 new people, they never got what it took for the position, caused a big mess on the center, and eventually it all became a chaotic situation. Face to face and a proper internship previous to the hiring, is definitively the best way to welcome newbies on your company.

Sounds to me that it was more about the CEO not having enough experience in hiring, and they just completely misjudged the people from the get-go, and face to face interviews wouldn't have made a difference. I have hired people from abroad with just a phone call, and they have gone well for the grand most part, so it's also very possible to deal with it that way.

I don't know but I prefer face to face interviews. It's weird but I just feel more comfortable talking to someone face to face than I would be talking to them over the phone. Plus phone interviews can become extremely awkward if you can't understand them and have to keep asking them to repeat themselves lol.

It's good that you're very comfortable talking to people in face to face interviews. It will bode well for you in the future.

Yeah you right, poor network connections might spoil the interview process, that's why I go with your idea on face to face interview; much more fair.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Another thing about face to face interviews is it's easier to get solid feedback at the end. Sometimes interviews done digitally can become problematic later on. A person can claim they never said something or claim you took something out of context.

I also prefer being interviewed face-to-face because I am much more nervous when interviewed in a phone. I just don't know the reason why I am more nervous when the interviewer is not in front of me. I much more confident when I am talking face-to-face because I can express more than in phone interview.
