What Are Some Topics Which You Would Absolutely Not Write Content About?

There are so many topics out there to write about and to get paid to write about. There are also so many topics out there for blog content and commentary. However, are there some topics that you would absolutely NOT write about, regardless of the pay? What are those topics, and why do you feel that way about them?

I wouldn't write about love because I tend to get really sensitive. I will start to picture this perfect love life and the way love is supposed to be when in reality there is no certain way that love is supposed to be. We all love differently so I wouldn't know how to start up a topic on love. Then as I'm writing about it, I'll upset myself comparing my story to love in real life. I would never write about politics because I'm not a political person. I don't know much on politics as I'm supposed to but that's because I barely find interest in that topic. It is important to have knowledge on politics but since I have no interest in it, I barely have knowledge on that topic. The last topic that I wouldn't write about is sports. Sports isn't my thing so I wouldn't see a reason to write about it. I can barely remember the last time I sat down and watched a game.

I have gone through recent heartbreak myself, so, right now, until I get a bit more objectivity on the situation, I would probably not write about this topic either. It's a shame, too, because I feel like I know a great deal about this topic, at this point, but my emotions are holding me back, and it would most likely be therapeutic for me to write about these things. I try to write about topics that I am interested in and that I know a little bit about!

I'm so sorry about it JoeMilford, and believe me, you are not alone in that field. As it has been commented, love is not an easy topic to write about, first because no one tends to be objective enough, and we always tend to put our own emotions and experiences about it when we write, and second, because everybody has its own way to define it and live it. So, due to the fact is a very sensitive topic, is better to write about any other theme, where most people have a tendency on.

I can't say that I wouldn't write about it, but I definitely agree that love is a touchy subject for me as well. Without going into too much detail, I myself have had a very turbulent love life thanks to certain mental and emotional circumstances, so it always hits a soft spot when I read or write about ideal love. I know that the term "ideal love" is somewhat of an oxymoron but we have to admit that a lot of us have certain views of what the perfect romance would be.

I think writing about love is one of the most complicated things in the whole world because it's the kind of subject that is extremely comprehensive and very particular.

Each person has their own experiences and none of them can be completely discarded or considered. In my opinion, is the kind of subject that always has abstract conclusions.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
No kidding--it is an elusive topic and one that we ALL feel differently about in our "abstract conclusions", as you call them. I think that people "love" differently and that they move on from relationships differently. I am not sure how much of this is nature versus nurture, but I have always heard that "it is better to have loved than not to have loved at all". However, there were times in my life that if I had written a blog about this I would most likely refute it because I was hurting at the time.

I agree with you here on not writing anything about politics. It's not that I don't have a clue about it, I actually did 4 months program in political science, so I'm well aware of what goes on in that field but writing on it doesn't give me joy and it's probably because of the nature and how politics is done in my country. Everything about politics disgust me, so I'm 100% staying away from that topic.

I may write on love and sex but I will always pick writing on sports, specifically on football(Soccer) over doing anything on love should the option to choose between the two present itself. I'm a good fan of soccer, so doing a piece on it would be very enjoyable for me.

I disagree with you. I believe that love would be my greatest topic. Love is the greatest gift of all.

I wouldn't want to write about the nonexistent of God. The truth is that doing so would always make me feel awkward and not in good mood if either saying he doesn't exist or we can't prove he exists yet. No matter the pay, this is one topic that I won't try writing about.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
Barida,
I think that maybe the holidays had me thinking about this topic a bit--religion in general, that is, so I revisited your post here. In any case, regardless of one's personal religious or spiritual beliefs, the existence or nonexistence of "God" is not a "provable" discussion. it could go either way, based upon one's faith, so I would probably avoid this subject as a blog theme because people could argue over it for a million years and still never really have empirical evidence to base their content upon. In other words, I totally agree with you here.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Baburra
I myself am an atheist and even I wouldn't write about this topic, probably, just because I don't think it's worth the trouble. Anyone who believes in God wouldn't really be convinced just because I logically explain my side, nor do I really want to convince them since it's not like I'd get much out of it anyway. And also as much as I find the debates about it entertaining, after a while it does get tiring and also a lot of people just can't keep themselves from becoming very crass when it comes to this topic, on either side.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
I try to stay away from any topic that is religious related in any way. This is because I'm sure religion is very delicate thing to discuss and when not handled right have the tendency of sparking out violence. Some ordained person even fail to understand the turn nature of religion and sometimes misinterpret it. Just like some who say that the Koran teaches to kill all the infidels, if not properly understood well by anyone (Muslim) who is a true believer might end up killing a Christian living next door to him should an opportunity present itself.

It would probably have to do with something about science or medicine. Both are topics that I'm not too great with and I would struggle quite a lot with. Plus medicine is something that you do not want to write something wrong about so it would definitely be a topic that I would avoid because it would just be too hard to research properly and making sure all your information was correct would be too time-consuming.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Yeah, I wouldn't want to write about science as well. Not because it's something I can't surf the internet for, but as a result of the fact that it's not a topic that interests me that much as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Baburra
Good point. I don't think I would put up any content about giving any type of medical advice either because if you give out the wrong advice then it could prove to be risky or even fatal to those who end up believing it and I also don't want to be responsible for anything like that. I would be hesitant to write about most any type of advice that had any strong bearing to daily life or health, to be honest. I'd much rather just write about lighter stuff like entertainment.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Same here. I find it difficult to write about scientific topics. I easily get confused with medical terms and such. It stresses me out just to learn all the necessary information. Not worth my time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DarthHazard
It's not easy for us non-scientific people which is why it should be best that we avoid such topics. Like you said, it's just not worth our time because, by the time you research the various topics and the terms, you would have wasted so much time that you could have written another article in that time for another topic.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I wouldn't write anything that I am not familiar with such as automobile, science and technology. No point to web search and revamp the words because those are not my field and I might not be able to bring out the "taste" of the content to attract viewers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
I think insisting on writing about something that you don't like or are not very familiar with is wasting time because you are not doing something that you really like / understand (something extremely motivating for those who write).

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I most definitely could not write about anything automobile related. I am a bit ashamed of this, and I should no more about my vehicle, but I just never was taught and never learned enough about cars to keep them functional without professional help or the dealer. I must admit that I can't even do my own oil change, and that is pretty embarrassing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Baburra
I agree and I would not do it also. I think even if they were the most profitable topics to write about I still would not write about them just because I'd have to do so much more research than actual enthusiasts and it will just take me too much time to get to the same state as an average hobbyist. Also, it will still probably come across as fake even if I am able to successfully accomplish writing articles about these topics because my passion or lack thereof will probably translate into the article.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Corzhens
Like you, I avoid technical writings like technology even if my job is directly related with technology. What I want to write is something that I enjoy like my passion or things related to my family life. But with my job, it is boring to write about technical procedures. I have a car and I don't know anything about automobiles so that is also out of the scene. Another thing that I will not write is about sex and pornography which I believe should be a private matter and left inside the bedroom.

I would really not write topics about adult content or about obscene things. I am not really into such topics and I find them to be rather destructive than engaging. I would also not write about things that can cause readers to be pschologically affected. I can't give a good example on this but any topic that will disturb my mind is not worth writing about. This could be due to past expeiences or being inexperience about certain topics.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I totally agree with you here--that's not my scene either. I had a friend in college who was a really good writer, and he wrote for adult publications and made good money at it, but he said it always made him feel pretty gross, and after he had his first kid, a daughter, he quit. Some topics are disturbing by their very nature, and sometimes we have to face this, but, like you, if I do not have to write about such topics, then I don't.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Not that it's my forte anyways but I would greatly avoid writing or penning any topics that shine or try to positively spin cigarette smoking or drug use. There has always been an undercurrent of individuals who say cocaine use and tobacco help people stay thin or lose weight. That might be true, but the cons far outweigh the pros.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
Once again, I agree with you.
I have absolutely NO interest in anything tobacco, and I don't even like the new vaping trend (no offense, but I kind of think it looks ridiculous). Although I do not abhor it or have an issue with it, I also do not visit any sites or blogs about drugs--I am guessing that the ones regarding marijuana are the most typical and numerous--and this is a huge political issue too, in terms of legalization, etc. However, I think that a blog encouraging illicit or over-the-top drug use would be pretty irresponsible. Don't get me wrong--I've had my wild times and days, but trying to positively spin, as you put it, substance use or abuse is a double-edged sword, and that issue is different for every individual, in my non-medically trained opinion. For me, there is just so much more interesting stuff out there to write, blog, read, and research about!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Vaping was becoming popular until some of the vaping pens began exploding as people were using them. Nothing ruins a party atmosphere like smoking on a vaping pen and having it literally blow up below your fingertips. People still vape but certain brands have taken a serious hit due to the exploding pens.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I had not heard about this phenomena. I wonder if people were seriously injured or if they sued the vaping companies. It would seem that the companies who manufacture these devices would have tested these things out, but I know some companies make shoddy merchandise in the name of making quick sales and a big profit. These vape shops are popping up everywhere though, at least near Atlanta where I live. Hopefully, the unsafe products are being taken off the market. Regardless of one's vices or habits, no one needs things exploding on them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I would only refuse topics if they are too far removed from my own opinion or if they require too much research that would already be way too outside my area of expertise. I think I could probably pull off writing something pretending that it is my opinion, but I really wouldn't enjoy it and I wouldn't like publishing it, so I'd probably just stay away from doing that. Also, if it needs too much expertise that I would need to do so much research, I would also probably just stay away from that too, especially if it is something that I know people might read and use in their own lives, because I would constantly worry about getting something wrong and potentially putting someone else who reads the article at risk.

It's nice to read something from a great freelancer. I have to admit that it's not that easy, but writing about anything we can write on shows how professional we are.

Generally speaking, there isn't any topic I'm not comfortable with writing. If it's a subject I don't really know, I take the time to research details about it thoroughly, before writing about my findings. If it's a topic that I don't personally have the same views on, I make sure not to inject opinionated or bias details. Articles I write like these are very neutral and don't have any general opinion or personal input. Regarding adult content, I also don't mind writing about this topic, so long as the content is directed at a mature audience, and not underaged minors.

The only topics I'm not interested in writing, involve terror groups or anything related to terror. Primarily because I am aware that's a sensitive topic on search engines and websites. At the same time, I'm not looking to involve myself in things I don't fully know about. Especially when they involve war or severe political strife within a country.

I'll never write anything I don't feel comfortable with. I'll also never be pressured into writing something that I don't really want to speak about. My article writing skills are very broad, but at the same time, selective depending on the sensitivity of the topic we're dealing with.

You know this is actually an excellent question, because it makes me really look into my own moral standing as a writer. And well, to be quite honest, I don't think that there is all too much I wouldn't write about.

In terms of non-fiction work, I don't think that there is much off the table for me besides things like murder and kidnapping. I researched such content when I did a report on serial killers, and it is incredibly depressing for me to do. I get really sad and end up putting myself in the shoes of the victims and their family members, and it puts me in a slump that I find hard to get out of.

As for fictional stuff, I wouldn't write anything that is far too morally depraved. I've always felt that as a writer it is important to push the limits of your content into dangerous zones, but some stuff is just plain distasteful.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I think that you and I are somewhat similar, and when I came up with the question, I was thinking about how it framed me as a writer as well, so I wanted to get some feedback from the forum community here. There are controversial and tough ethical questions which I am interested in, but I have to be really inspired to write about those. I got into a lot of podcasts which went into wikileaks and other assorted nastiness there, for a while, and the content itself started to make me feel a bit depressed. In any case, if I can't write in a positive way about something, I at leas try to be informative and to frame the issue, no matter how tough it is, in a logical and practical light.

I had a Michigan forum once and I wrote a controversial topic about Politics and it caught the attention of a whack job who threaten to kill me and my whole family. I can't even count how many times he harassed me and finally, I told him I have your Ip address and I am going to go to the police if you don't stop. And he stopped after I said that but ill never write anything about politics ever again!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Baburra
That sounds scary. I always hear about things like this but never first hand so it kind of makes the story a lot more real to me. I think it's easy for us to forget that the audience reading our content out there is very vast and varies a lot, so we rarely take into consideration that someone who might be a little off could come across what we wrote. I'm glad you are fine but I really hope that person is checked up on because someone who will do that really can't be mentally healthy.

Without thinking twice: I would never - not at all - write about politics (especially about the laws surrounding them and the government authorities that make the decisions) because I find it a matter simply disgusting to be discussed.

It's really not my cup of tea. What Are Some Topics Which You Would Absolutely Not Write Content About?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
Amen to that. There are plenty of people out there way more qualified to write about this than me, and, personally, I do not need to get mired anymore than I already am in this subject based upon my position in academia and my own friends and family and their strong opinions. I can control my emotions when it comes to writing about politics, and I know I can articulate my points well, but, so far, I am not so sure that I have anything original to offer in this arena, and I am also not so sure that offering anything that I have to say has not already been said anyway, actually.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Dear wiseagent,
yeah, better stay out of the politic issues, this is a pretty sensitive article to write even though most countries are diplomatic, freedom of speech, still, it is best to sty neutral.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

anjanetteclyde0
I would not write anything about Politics because it always has this dirty tactics and injustice. There are always bad intentions and perceptions surround, maybe not with the people involved by on the system itself. It would be so hard to identify which one could be better than the other. But then Politics is already here in this world right before the world begun. And the only thing I guess that we can do is to take part which one is beneficial to humanity and community.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, generally speaking never say never but regardless, I'd never write about something that would be conflicting with my morals or things that I have absolutely no clue about and you can't find information somewhere else. Also, I prefer not to write on topics such as religion, politics, etc. because they can cause a lot of controversies and I don't want to be associated with it.

It's interesting how many people also wouldn't write about the politics, haha. Smart move. You can always find some fanatics that would argue with you for weeks.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Writing about religion has also been one of the dreaded topics that I won't feel comfortable writing about as well. The reason is because of the differences we have in religions from one to another.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
Writing about religion is like walking in a minefield (filled with very powerful bombs about to explode at any moment). It seems that the speeches these days are extremely inflamed (especially when the subject is controversial).

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
The funny thing about religion these days is that it's safer to write a blog about how or why you aren't religious. Than it is to write an article on which religion you prefer or why you feel your religion is the best one. The tables have been completely turned.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
Tronia,
This is a really good response because I think that a lot of us, just people in general, will tend to go against our own moral codes in order to gain profit and recognition. This is a very unfortunate thing! We all need to have personal standards, when it comes to our content, and to what we would be willing to compromise ourselves for in order to procure a profit. I avoid politics and religion as well in my online work--as Soulwatcher said in his response to this forum, those are dangerous arenas sometimes to write in!

I would never write in favor of a side that would initiate racial, gender and/or religious discrimination.

As the song goes, "I'm only human born to make mistakes", I firmly uphold on that belief that no one's born in a perfect way. That's why I don't have the right to judge other people if they're gay, transexual or agnostic. As long as you don't mess with the universal law, you don't kill, you don't harm anybody nor our planet Earth, you're good.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree--and you are expecting general common sense and general human kindness from others--which should be a NORMAL expectation--however, there are a lot of people out there who have been so corrupted by their own acceptance of dogma and materialism that they can not even fathom being open-minded to lifestyles which differ from theirs. In any case, I would only write about these topics, which you mention above, if I were going to take a political or social stance in terms of defending the rights of others.

I know myself too well am always controversial and so many people have come up to me threatening to kill me, I enjoy so much controversies and their topics, considering the fact that so many people out there want to listen to things they want to hear and things they want to see.

I won't write on topics that are not controversial, I like being threatened by people, I know me my mom have had issues concerning it especially the whole death threats. Topics I won't do no matter the pay, let me see, I don't like subjects of discussion on technology I consider it boring, I don't like topics that deal with jobs and how good it is to submit your C.V, I am a sincere person so I would rather convince you not to undertake such jobs I know am crazy it is just what I like doing I don't like writing on thing that bore me out.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
Good gracious! Death threats? You need to hang around or near more open-minded people lol. I do not think that you should be enjoying having your life threatened though, and we don't need to be putting our moms in danger. I think it is totally cool to be controversial, and everyone should have a right to free speech, but people who get so upset they threaten to kill others--now that is really taking it way to far.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You remind me of a blogger who has the propensity for writing controversial topics. But her focus was fake news like the visa-free for the US, that was a big issue because US visa is an elusive thing that many of my countrymen have been denied. With that blog about a visa-free US visit, come on, that earned a lot of views. And in being controversial, that blogger has been hired by the government in the press and media department. It's like saying that being controversial pays.

I wouldn't ever write about politics or sports as I am clueless about this kind of topics. I do feel you should only talk about the topics/niches you know well about. Sure some research it beforehand and then rewrites in their own words. I do feel it helps if you actually know a bit about it as you can mention your experiences in these type of fields.

I can generally write about most things like Paranormal, Spiritual to Psychic and self-help. I can also talk about relationships as I been there done that so I have a lot of experience in that field.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I'm with you here. I am also clueless when it comes to sports, so I would, and do, avoid that topic. I could write a bit about politics, but I avoid that topic as well because of how volatile it is these days. I am a political person, and I do not run from intelligent political debate, but I would not want to put my energy into that kind of writing regularly, and I would also not like to have my energy sucked out of me by audiences which would most likely attack my beliefs and content.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Neither do I. Seriously, so far I haven't been able to manage with politics, and is not just by writing but talking about it. I'm from a country struggling with terrible politics, suffering about it, and I easily loose my tolerance and patience. And sports, honestly I can't be more distracted about it, I mix terms, names, and moves, so I'm not very on point with those topics.

Politics is one topic that I wouldn't touch. It's because there's always two sides to it and you can't be too sure what's right and what's wrong when it comes to politics.

I agree that its not good writing on topics which you have no personal knowledge or topics which you're not comfortable with. It's my experience in writing articles on demand that whenever I write on subjects that I'm not really familiar with, it doesn't come out that good. Even though I've done my research i would feel that it would still lack something.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I'm not entirely sure how to view this question and the following results. As professional writers we should have the ability to separate our personal feelings from our work product. I have difficulty writing on subjects I have no interest in but I am able to do it after learning the subject. The only topics I would not write are those I have very strong feelings towards and there aren't many subjects in that category. If I feel strongly about an issue I can actually write the opposing view of said issue very well. The only issues I can think of at the moment that I would absolutely refuse to consider are religious views of all life other than human being here for "our use" and topics promoting activities I feel are morally evil. I've never encountered such issues in any sort of requested writing topics. People who feel very strongly on moral issues tend to be quite able to write their perspectives and collect voluntary contributions from others who feel the same.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
On the contrary to your statement about being unsure as to how to respond to this thread topic, I would say that you responded to it perfectly. You spoke of what you would and would not consider as a personal choice in your content writing, and you also said that you would avoid certain content, such as religious content, and you were very clear here. I think that you point out, also, that all good freelancers need to be able to lend their writing abilities to a huge variety of subjects as we build out clientele. Showing versatility is an advantage in this line of work, and being able to tackle a myriad of topics and research projects, regardless of the subject matter, is an obvious plus for a freelancer.
