Do You Write Fiction?

Do You Write Fiction?

What sort of experience do you have in the field of creative writing? Do you do it for fun, or have you tried to be published?

I'm a filmmaker first a foremost, but writing plays a huge role in that process even though it's such a visual field. If you have a bad script, awful plot, or terrible characters, your film won't be worth watching. That's why writers play such a huge role in the field! Because of this, I'm taking a master's level storywriting course to try and improve my writing skills so I can put them to the test on the screen. I've found that writing compelling fiction stories are very difficult, making compelling characters is difficult, and developing compelling plot lines and conflicts is difficult.

Going into it, this is exactly what I knew: I don't know how to be "compelling" in my writing. What will keep the reader at the edge of their seat? What will make them connect with my protagonist the best? What's the best way for me to provide certain information to the audience?

It's been a great experience, and I'm excited to be creating my own stories as the semester goes on. So tell us about your experiences with fiction writing!

In as much as many will try to claim this is not true, but the reality of the matter is that one can see that many compelling stories sell much more than what we have in real stories. So, I'm always trying to make my stories suspense filled for that is the very best way to make the film viewers and the stories readers get interested in what you are writing.

Intrigues and suspense are the major things that gets me drawn to fiction stories because they have a way of getting your full attention and focus in wanting to know what would happen next in the story. It's creative mind to write such a story that wouldn't lack in keeping people's interests on the tip.

I like suspense too. It's one of the best ways to keep readers reading until the end. Though, it can be hard too. Learning to write suspenseful prose takes time and effort. I learned that from experience.

I like suspense thriller also but I want to watch it not alone. I am more also in comedy romance. I want to watch this kind of movie because it is light and easy to watch unlike horror movies.

I think most of us get scared by Horror movies. It's not easy to write stuff that makes people afraid of stuff. That's why screen writers have a hard time figuring out what will work for TV and the big screen.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Exactly. Writers always consider how people react on the movie that they are planning to make. There are also a survey that they perform which movie audience wanted to watch the most. It is same in the books. The writers always think which one should be sell easier. I think most of the best selling books are those kind of books that the readers would easily connect the story.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Yes, that's true. Many of us have noticed the decision of industry experts to make movies out of books. We see it all the time with titles such Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. They've made lots of money adapting these books to movies.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah, these kind of books are really fascinated people. Most of the best selling books are turned into movies and still hit the audience. This proved how books influence people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
The book fans also support movies. Especially, if they're made well. You can see how Twilight had its own fan base despite people's general dislike for it. This is what makes movie adaptations successful.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah several popular books have a movie adaptation some have series version too. It is all about the success of the book and the write too.

I remember reading that those involved in the production of Harry Potter movies were making a lot of money.

And the fact that the author made so much. This shows how big of an influence their writing has over people's source of income.

No I don't write fiction. If I were to write I would like to write about true to life stories. Its because in true to life stories you will be able to learn something from it. You can learn many moral lessons. You can avoid doing mistakes. You can also be inspired and do what you want to do.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Well, you can do a mix of both. Many people nowadays find joy in exploring deep truths about their lives through writing. You can add real life scenarios you've experienced and add some imagination to it. That makes it much more interesting to read.

That way, people can get to know your life and see how imagination works. Best of both worlds.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
True to life story in the book is something that will surely hit your target readers. Biography of famous people is the best example of it. Many people are interested in these popular people. They wanted to know how was like the daily lives of them, what are they secrets and what was the feeling of being famous. These are the questions that wanted to know by the readers and for that you would able to sell your books easily.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
What's interesting is that autobiographies seem much more famous nowadays. So many people are sharing the stories of their lives. They find joy and meaning in inspiring others through their best and worst experiences.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah thats correct. I read several books about famous people and it was really interesting. Some of them inspired us and some of them motivated us to strive more in our lives.

I know what you mean. I've read the stories of people who've gone through hardships and adversities. I found them really inspiring. You can feel the emotions of those who've come from the bottom until they reached the top.

mark8625
Right. Who would not love that kind of book by the way? It was very inspiring book. Whenever I read inspirational book like what you have read it gave me so much goosebumps and moved me. It was like telling me that I have to be more positive in life and keeps moving forward for whatever the hardship and difficulties are.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Me too. The message was really sweet and simple. It often is in stories like this. Because the writer wants to impart their wisdom on all the readers. They've learned so much after everything they've experienced.

One of the best book that inspired me is the book written by Paul Yonggi Cho. It was entitled the Fourth Dimension. Its not an autobiography of his life. He wrote about his real life experiences.

I guess people prefer imaginative stories than realistic ones. Like how Fantasy and Romance are often regarded as the best selling genres. It really brings in the crowd. Most of them are youngster and teens. Even adults are attracted to fictional accounts.

I tried writing short horror tales in the past just for fun and that eventually led me to some ghostwriting jobs, but my personal works have never been published in a major way though.

My stories are about mythological creatures and ancient legends and it's connection and effects on present day reality.

What I do is I connect the characters lineage, ancestry or location to these local stories making the character interesting to audiences. Then I build around it, making it easier for me to make a good plot and this makes the story more compelling.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It sounds like you really enjoy world-building, which is something I need to work on. I like the aspect of creating characters, lore, interactions, and backstories, and it's something I need to get better at. I feel like the more "realistic" or "relatable" your world is to your audience, the more compelled they will be by it.

Kakashi2020,
I love hearing about people whose writing has led them to jobs and employment! It always reminds me not to give up on my dreams and to keep developing my craft. I think it is so smart what you are doing with your characters and how you are making them more tangible and three dimensional to your audiences. I like your subject matter, in terms of mythical beasts and legends, and I definitely like reading about those! I grew up reading J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and I think those authors really left a mark on me and tastes in the fantasy genre.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I know what you mean. Mythological stuff really captures people's interests. Maybe it's the history and the powers combined. It's this feeling of otherworldly adventure. As if the reader can actually go to the place the characters are exploring.

I admire people who are fiction writers with stories straight from their head. I know of some movie scriptwriters who just rehash ideas from old movies or from the books. For me, a good writer writes from his own ideas and creates characters based on real people. And maybe to be a good story writer, you need a flexible mind that can travel to and from the real to the surreal in weaving a good fiction that is easily understandable with the maintained logic therein.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Yeah, I agree with you that some of fiction writers don't get creative for all they do is twist an old movie storyline to get what they want to write and that's really not a good way to go about it. I prefer situations where one can be able to write original contents and not trying to imitate.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It's always the challenge with modern writers. Everything has already been said and done. But the best way to add originality is to find new ways of telling your story. Because at the end of the day, only you can write what you're going to create. So it would be in your best interest to make it amazing as can be.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
Yeah you're right. Actually in our country, just go to different provinces, and talk to the people there, and you will get a lot of fiction stories coming from them. Some imaginary creatures, place, or the beliefs. No need to copy the other ideas from original writer, just invest to travel and you will find a lot of fiction stories.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I have heard of some of them. There was one episode in Grimm where the creature was called an Aswang. It was kind of scary. So if there are many of them in the province, I'm sure you'll find it easier to write something original.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
I agree completely. Anymore we're seeing more of the same thing in movies, especially when it comes to remakes (I'm looking at you, Jumanji).

This is one of the reasons I like indie filmmaking so much. When you get out of Hollywood and find smaller teams of filmmakers who are super passionate about their craft and operating on a small budget, you also find some really compelling and original stories. It's always refreshing to see a unique story on screen, that's for sure!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It's like indie music. You hear so many amazing stuff because they're not following the trends in Hollywood. They get to be themselves without compromising their style and choice of direction.

This makes indie content original and sincere. Though, one thing I don't like about indie films is their tendency to have either tragic or ambiguous endings. I'm still a fan of happy endings.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I've written some stories. But I can't say that they're any good. The great thing about writing is that it's about learning. You get better at it the more you write and learn from your mistakes.

Yeah, they are genius. They are literally out of this world. They are the real inventors. I wonder how they imagine these kinds of stuff. I wonder if they have dream about it or just think about it. Otherwise, I admire them so much.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
I agree with you on that. They are not just genius but very genius. These are the type of people who have a wide imaginations. They are very clever to make unreal into reality. Many popular writers wrote this kind of books and they keep on selling it as many people still patronizing these kind of books.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Imagination is something you can never buy. That's why many publishers pay writers a great sum of money. They know that what they're getting in return is worth more than cash. Because art is created through the artists themselves.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Sometimes you're just born with it. It's something we can't control. Like how some people are naturally born with a great voice. Sure we can practice skills and stuff. But talent is just something that has to be with you since you were a baby.

I'm not that confident with writing fiction yet (enough to earn from it), but I tried writing stuff in reddit. There's a subreddit called "writingprompts" where users submit their ideas for plots and then other users can post their own take on the prompt. There's a lot of good plot ideas in there and good stories from various users which help me in improving my fiction writing skills.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Hey, that's a really cool idea! I've never heard of that Subreddit, but I'll go and check it out right now. My writing instructor at college gives us writing prompts each week as assignments to help us better understand our own characters, which has been a huge benefit to me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I prefer doing prompts by myself. I'd probably feel intimidated if I were to show something to a professor. It's better to practice with a friend or someone who's in sync with your way of thinking.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Glad to see another fellow Redditor on this site! I think that anyone that enjoys creative writing definitely needs to familiarize themselves with /r/writingprompts. I'm not very much into creative writing myself, but there was always some really impressive work and original ideas on that subreddit. It's funny though, anytime I'd come across a title for a writing prompt while scrolling through /r/all, I would be in the mindset that I was still reading actual titles, so when I came across some outlandish ideas I'd be taken aback for a moment before I realized "Oh wait, phew, it's just a suggestion for /r/writingprompts".

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Haha yeah, in my case, I used to read a lot of the top submissions frequently in there but I also watch a lot of TV series at the same time. Sometimes, I would misremember and mix the plots of a /r/writingprompts submission and a TV series, lol.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
What's funny is the fact that some prompts actually tell the whole plot of a TV show. I remember reading about something that resembled the plot of Lost. I laughed a lot because despite its ambiguity, it was really spot on.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's so cool. I've actually forgotten that Reddit has that. I'm going to check it out soon. It seems like Reddit is one of the best communities for aspiring writers.

i absolutely love writing fiction, and i try to work on a novel I am doing a little bit every day. I try to at least write a chapter on this thing I am working on every day, and it takes a lot of effort. I am writing a science fiction novel about the hollow earth and what happens when its supposed inhabitants start coming up to the upper crust because of prophesies of the planet being destroyed. It's pretty wild but really really fun to write about! I have gotten a lot of positive response for it, and so i keep plugging away. I am not so sure how good I am at writing fiction, but i do know I love doing it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You are like my husband who has the propensity for writing science fiction stories. I know that it's the genre that is one of the hardest to write since you need to have a solid understanding of science. Especially when you create a milieu out of the ordinary, you have to remember everything that you have created so the logic will be maintained.

I agree with you. In my case, writing fiction is like my way to escape reality. There are even times when I translate my dreams into writing. It makes me feel good.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Creative writing has never really been my forte. That is, I've never really enjoyed creating vast works of fiction such as entire novels, or even so much as short stories. While I consider myself an imaginative person, it just isn't a form of creativity that I take pleasure in. I'm mostly a fan of non-fiction and journalistic writing.

That being said, the one form of creative writing that I do enjoy is writing haikus. Something about capturing complex ideas and emotions in such a restricted, simplistic form is wonderful to me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
DenisP,
I, too, love the haiku form! I was wondering, have you ever tried the form called the prose-poem? I've fallen in love with it! It combines prose and poetry into a short paragraph form. See: https://diymfa.com/writing/poets-revolt-brief-guide-prose-poem

Also, have you ever heard of the concept of the "one sentence short story"? Check this out:
https://quotecatalog.com/u/kirstenocorley/2016/08/beautiful-single-sentence-stories/

Both of these forma are a bit tough to pull off at first, but after some practice, they can be really fun--I love experimenting with these! Hopefully, I threw a little inspiration towards your way! If not, so be it! Lol.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Thanks so much for that link on "one sentence short stories"! That is a really amazing concept that I haven't heard about until now.

Right off the bat, the first story really struck me like a ton of bricks. "He slipped the ring back into his pocket and stepped out into the cold." Something about that one sentence made my heart skip a beat, and then my mind raced with all these ideas as to what may have happened to this man.

I can see how this would be a really great tool for inspiration by creative writers as well. A one sentence short story can be expanded upon and turned into an entire novel if one chooses to do so.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
DenisP,
Of course! And you're welcome!
I found this concept a few years ago when I was teaching Creative Writing at a community college and I kind of fell in love with it. I think that you could expound upon a small literary trope like this and make it into something huge and epic, or, as is what happened to you, you could simply put that one line out there, and the, it could simply grow and explode into its own ways in the minds of the readers through their imaginations!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
I love reading poems, but I'm also not good at writing them, except when it comes to haiku. The simplicity of the haiku makes it easier but at the same time it's beautiful how you can convey beautiful messages with just 17 syllables.

I have to admit that I don't write fiction too often. I just mainly write to make money and there's not that big of a demand when it comes to fiction compared to normal articles or guides. That's why I just write whatever the client wants and 90% of the jobs it is articles.

I used to love writing fiction in university though because it allows you to express your creativity and imagination. You can go all out and see what others think about your stories and ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, most of the time is about to the clients. They will give you the topic or brand and then it's up to you what kind of article you going to write just to promote or to get more attention to all the readers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Writing fiction takes a lot more time to do and also to earn as there are not many opportunities for this, so unless you have a real talent and skill for it and the passion, it will be hard for you to start earning through it. Still, I'd encourage others to try writing fiction to express your thoughts and ideas as it can be a good exercise for any writer.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
Yes I do write fiction mostly horror stories with a touch of romance. I like writing about stories associated with local tales of the supernatural, it can easily captivate the readers attention.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
No I'm not. I love to write some scenario that will motivate the readers and make it reality. But I love to read some fictions stories and amaze by the writers because of their creativeness to write that kind of story. I wonder where they got that story, specially to the original writer, because most of the time, the fiction story is just a copy from other writers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
I know what you mean, I'm blown away by the ideas that people have. And when they can develop them and make such compelling worlds and characters out of them, it's just the greatest! When I read a particularly good book or comic, or watch a particularly good movie, it always starts spurring my creativity and I feel like writing and creating something.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
Yeah, a good inspiration coming from them, but sometimes I ask my self, home you didn't get that idea? specially if the story is just simple, and new. And by watching or reading some good movies or books, somehow I get some idea and write something about that.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
I'm more of a poet than a fiction writer but I do appreciate their works because it's not an easy task to use ones imagination and creativity to create a good work that would hold the interest of most people who find time to read it or view it if it's meant to be acted. I'm still considering my options on trying to do a piece on a fiction topic and hopefully I would get it done before the year runs out.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Good luck with your fiction piece! I think for a lot of people, there's an element of anxiety to putting down your fictional ideas into stories. Sometimes I wonder if my ideas are stupid or not, and whether or not I should even bother trying to develop them.

When I take my stories to class to read this semester, I'm always afraid that my storylines are going to be simpler or more "childish" than my classmates, which makes me nervous to read my stories out loud.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Sure. Fiction is the best genre of writing and literary work imo. The possibilities are endless and there's no limitations on the places your imagination can go.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Exactly, fiction writing is endless when it comes to exhausting options because there is no limits as to where a fiction writer could take his writing to. As long as the mind is creative enough, new storyline would be added to the fiction writing which makes it get more interesting by the day.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

MomoStarr16
It is always the kind of story I am writing. More people are into fiction especially those story that deals with power and races of living things that is not real in our life. Fiction story are easy to stretch out and needs only minimum time of researching. Unlike non-fictional story that should be properly researched to lessen your error. Like it is easier to imagine things for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
But I think right now, almost all of the fiction characters or story is already done before, no more new ideas, and if ever, It's almost the same before. Perhaps you're right about that fiction is really easy to find and get information, we all know that it's still the best story for some people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

MomoStarr16
Yes I agree with you. Almost all the characters that you can think of are already created. That is when your creativity will strike in. By adding up twist and turn of events, a cliche character can be again exciting to the readers. Do You Write Fiction?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah right, But you need a good twist or else the original writer might sue you for the copyright issue. Right now, I'm still waiting for the new fiction character who gonna come up and become interesting character to viewers, and readers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

MomoStarr16
Of course you should make your own story and not just copy the work of other writer. A twist should be genuine from you and not from the other book you read. Making a story that is alike from other book is boring.

I had wrote a fiction story before but with dialogues because I am planning to create this fiction story through comics and the characters involve here were my friends. It was for school purposes tho but it was also for fun since it was through comics. Well I also included the things that we usually do in school and the things we remembered in each of our characteristics and mannerisms so it was a bit of comedy and romantic. Our crushes were also included as one of the main characters of the story so the genre of the story I made was Romance/Comedy/Fantasy. I had made sketches of drawing but did not continue it since I was so busy doing my Thesis at time until I forgot that I had made a fiction story and just remember it now because of the topic.

I am planning to continue it and maybe some revisions of the story will be made since my ex boyfriend was included in main characters so I need to revise the story and some of its part was about us so there, I should revise some of the parts.

I don't write fiction stories, I write music and just like fiction I sometimes do some made up stories to make the song appealing or interesting to whoever who will listen to it or to my target audience. So if there's anything I can share to you to improve your creativity level is to use a Therapeutic Medicine Cannabis, it stimulates new brain cells and study shows that it helps prevent Alzheimer's decease. In my own experience every time I am writing a song lyrics my result is better when I took the medicine compare to when I am normal.

What an interesting way to approach your writing. I've never thought about writing reviews online before as a startup to getting published, but that could be a very good approach. If you know enough about a certain topic (like historical fiction), then absolutely you're qualified to be giving reviews of the work you read.

This in turn gives you better insight in how to write that particular genre, and will no doubt be beneficial to you when you start writing your own historical fiction. Keep it up!

Yeah, there are also some good fan-fictions out there on TV series and it's interesting how some of the theories which fans discuss online become actually part of the show, where the creators acknowledge that it was so good not to be put in the show.

That's a great way to practice your writing! I was told by my writing teacher that the best form of practice is to mimic someone whose work you like. This gets you used to writing in that style, and maybe even helps you determine how best to approach your writing on your own.

Taking a story that's already been created and continuing it takes a lot of burden off the creativity needed to start a new story completely from scratch, which is why writing prompts are such a great practice tool too.

I am honestly writing some fiction stories just to give entertainment to people especially by writing funny stories that the main characters are some of the well known people in the world. It was already a hobby for me if I have much time and If I feel motivated to do so since there were days that I feel bored and doing things that makes my interest makes me feel motivated. That is why I am writing some fiction stories to give amusement and at the same time to make my self also more positive in anyways.

Fiction stories are just great for entertaining people just like telenovelas and fantasy movies out there. It is really one of my favorite hobby to write fiction stories that would give motivational factors to people around me. Even though fiction stories really don't exist in reality but at least it gives us amusement and happiness that we want in life. Many movie director are creating fictional movies that people really love and enjoy very much and I am happy to have those movies since I learned something from them.

Fiction has always been a catchy theme my whole life. Is not because I write fiction, but I'm a fan of it. I enjoy to read fiction stories, watch movies, listen to audio books, everything that involves it. Just like you, I think fiction give us a lot of emotion, like making us believe that all that we ever imagine or dream, can eventually become real. I really admire writers that awake those feelings on me, while I'm reading their stories, because obviously is never easy to make that.

I kind of relate with that. It's always difficult to finish something. We might feel that our writing is inadequate. But it's just part of the process. We have to find it in our hearts to write what we know.

Because mistakes in the process show us where to improve.

It's so amazing that we can come up with all these ideas. It shows how passionate humans are with imagining a different world. I'm taking one writing one day at a time. I still have a long way to go before I become a great writer.

It's something we've created for ourselves. It can give us something to aspire to despite bleak realities. They also provide us with an idea on how to make life better. I love stories that remind us of our power to change our lives.
