One Buyer Tried To Stiff Me!

Two years ago, I had a client that had purchased several times from me and was great. She asked me if I would write for her friend, and I agreed to. I wrote her friend some articles, and the first payment was made. That buyer asked me to write several articles for him, and I agreed. I wrote them, and then sent via email. He replied back and said payment would be sent the next day. Then he was offline for several days and stopped responding to me. I kept messaging him, and no reply. I finally told my other client I was not writing for them until I was paid by her friend. She was completely floored that I was not paid, and had no idea that he had stopped responding. She took it into her own hands and got me the money. She did not want to loose my writing, and was totally miffed at her friend.

Wow what a great story. I would have never thought to tell my client that set me up with this client about this. What a great way to get paid. It says a lot about your writing and the client, and how she took it into her own hands for you to get paid. Did she personally pay you or did she get the money from her friend?

You never deliver work to a client until you are paid, period. Whether the payment comes directly from an invoice you sent, or is made to a third party site like ebay, fiverr, etc. You never even BEGIN work on a project you're contracted for until you are paid in some fashion. Much less finish the project, and then deliver the goods.

I agree with you on not delivering the work until the money is paid finally. It's not good to see some clients trying to chest those that work for them.

It's pathetic to read that some clients don't really care about the people that work for them. Writing might be easy, but it takes lots of energy to do and this is the reason those clients should always pay up on time.

Indeed. But freelancers have to be savvy about this sort of thing because if not. Word gets out - and other people start circling you to try and pull the same shenanigans. You need to nip that sort of thing in the bud quickly so people know you aren't a naive freelancer. Unfortunately, there are people in the world always seeking out naive labor they can exploit. Happens in many offline jobs as well.

I think that as freelancers we will come across such customers every now and then. We can't expect everyone to be honest. This is the reason I inform my clients about my terms and I go forward only if they agree.
