Find Inspiration for Writing, Being a Freelance Writer or Author by Watching Movies!

Hello all! All those writers out there that are looking for inspiration! Hopefully you've read my other posts on 10+ Ways to Find Inspiration for Writing, Being a Freelance Writer or Book Author starting from the 1st one to this one which is the 5th lesson today with a fun sounding topic; How to use the movies for coming up with inspiration for writing! Find Inspiration for Writing, Being a Freelance Writer or Author by Watching Movies!

So how can a writer, a freelance writer or author use the movies to come up with inspiration for writing? Well just watch any good movie with a pen and pad and you'll probably find things to write about within the first few minutes! But of course, it really depends what it is you want to write about!

Not all movies are the same, there are different types of movies. You have action/fighting/war movies. Thriller movies, horror movies. Comedies, dramas and many other genres of movie too. And while it's good to watch movies for writing inspiration, not every writer will be able to find inspiration from every movie.

But movies can be a real gold mine for writing inspiration! Becuse movies usually touch on real world, real life problems and scenarios that take place and all usually have some kind of outcome. Just thinking about these scenarios is enough to find inspiration for writing with!

The only problem with today's movies is that they are usually just rehashes of another movie! A great movie is one that is unique and timeless. One that goes on to become a loved classic. And if you can write a story like that, there's no reason why it wont go on to be made into a movie too!

In fact, many, many writers and authors wrote stories and books that some people originally snubbed and even mocked. That then later on went on to be turned into an amazing movie that is loved by and for generations of people. And that should be inspiration enough!

The other way that movies can inspire you is to write a review of it! Movie reviews are in high demand and producers and directors enjoy the banter and criticisms lol. But if you're looking for inspiration for writing, watch a movie and then write a review of it after.

The truth is, there is a lot of demand for new and unique stories by the movie industry, Hollywood and movie directors, producers etc. Because as said, most stuff is just a rehash of some other story. But every now and then a gem comes up that can be developed into a movie.

And so, that's basically several ways in which you can use the movies for inspiration for writing, or becoming a writer or author!

Your Homework for Today

  • Watch a movie or two that you like in some genre you like from start to finish.
  • As you're watching it/them, jot down things that happen, scenarios, outcomes etc that inspire you.
  • [Optional] Try to write an article or a report or even a review of the movie you've just watched.

Do you use the movies for writing inspiration?

I do this a lot too, not just with movies but with almost any other media I generally like. I do agree that movies are one of the better types of media to pull from, though, as like you have stated, they do often relate very well to daily life. Also, because the medium is visual, I don't have to worry too much about taking too much from where I was inspired from, since translating what I see visually into text is already a lot of space for me to express myself creatively without having to worry too much about taking too much from the source material.

One friend who is a scriptwriter for movies said that he watches an old movie when he encounters a writer’s block. Ironically, old movies give him new ideas for writing. But he warned that it is good to watch a movie that is different from the genre that you are writing. So if you are writing a story for an action genre, try watching a romance or even comedy movie. Watching a movie with the same genre that you are writing tends to influence you that your output may just be a copycat of sorts.

I actually watch a lot of documentaries and these have helped me to write very interesting contents. I usually watch documentaries related to the topic on which my blog is based on. Whenever I watch the documentaries I always get something new to write about. I have also learned countless things from these documentaries.

Sometimes what I do is pick a bad movie, the ones with a failed storyline and plot is better then I look for the it's core or key or gem, which is not the plot okay. After I find this, I'll build around it having a new plot, characters and storyline.

I agree with your technique of getting ideas from those bad movies. Sometimes I also get ideas when I would happen to watch a not so good movie because the bad scenes were easy to improve and when the plot is stale, it's also easy to enhance. Maybe it cannot be considered plagiarism but just picking ideas that are for enhancements.

Another way I get inspiration from movies is by watching different kinds of movies, doing this I'll get inputs that I can use in writing a story.

When watching several movies for this purpose I would suggest watching Action and Romance Films also Romance and Drama. After this you can now play with the stories by combining them.

Movies can help you generate ideas for your content. I think this applies most to people who write fiction. Watching movies from Harry Potter, Star wars and Fast furious just to name a few must really get the imagination cooking. For nonfiction work this would be difficult. When your writing about topics like fashion, health, finance and online working, your writing should be based on facts, opinion, personal experience. You can't get that from a movie, unfortunately!

Movies sometimes inspires me to write. These are movies which are quite inspiring and some which makes me happy and uplifts my feelings. Most are action adventure and sci-fi films and comedy films. Whenever I watch these kind of films, I would always write about it.

I love watching movies, it's a hobby of mine and I like writing movie reviews. I started out doing movie reviews for free. I'll write a review of a movie I've just seen and would post it on my movie site. Then after a while I was able to write paid reviews on several Anime and movie sites. I like doing it and it's easy more so if I like the movie.

Yes, that is very true, Movies can really be a goldmine of getting ideas for creating good quality content. The movie, its location, different characters, and their interactions can all inspire us to create great content. if the movie is very well made and has a great story and plot then that can give you a lot of subjects to think over and write about. also even if a movie is not that good and the plot and the story is also not so appealing then also we can get different ideas about how it can be made right and more appealing to the audience.
