Are you starved of ideas or developing your idea into a blog or article?

I have come across many who keep mentioning that they have no topics to write on. Mine is a different story. I have enough and more ideas and topics but my impatience does not let me write long winded posts, articles or blogs. I admire those who have volumes to write.

My choice is therefore to be a part of forums where we just create short threads, respond and comment but must admit whatever I write there is substance.

I am never starved for ideas; however, I do acknowledge that many of my ideas are better than others. I had a professor once tell me that there are no such things as boring subjects; there are only boring writers. This harsh comment really did stick with me, so I try to approach writing with the confidence that I can write about any subject with the proper gumption, inspiration, and dedication. That being said, I think it is best to write about subjects that you love and that you are familiar with. Your audience will pick up on your expertise, confidence, and emotion as you tackle your themes, and this will make your work, most likely, even more appealing to them.

This is great advice from a professor who clearly understood his subject (and a wise student, as well!). A lot of this boils down to how a person formats an article. The way you present the information should flow with the "feel" of it. For instance, you wouldn't want to write a list post for topics related to sentimentality. It's too sterile a format. Instead, you want to have a meandering piece with a strong sense of verbal rhythm, and which takes its time to tease the emotion out of the topic. Likewise, you probably don't want to write a meandering piece about how to fix your computer's driver issues! Rather than focusing on how unique a topic is, then, we should be more concerned with how we present it.

Painterly,
I think this is awesome advice in terms of writing the proper format for the material at hand. A poetry teacher of mine always said, "ask the fact before the form". In other words, choose a form which properly represents, compliments, and mirrors the content. Your post reminded me of this fact, and I appreciate it.

Not many have the gift of ideas and a free and effective way of writing that is consistent. There does come a time one develops a writer's block and if that does not happen to you then you are one lucky guy. More power to you.

This is a nice question. I believe that everyone of us have ideas. If we pray to God to give us ideas, I believe he can reveal His ideas to us. We must develop those ideas.

The only reason that I get starved of ideas is if I haven't really thought about the topic before. Most things that I write about, I have thought about deeply, and have researched and learned about. Therefore, usually when I am writing something in a blog or forum, I know enough about it that I can easily pose questions and raise discussions. I believe an easy solution to the problem of writer's block while writing blogs or forums is to hunt down topics that you feel confident writing about.

There's another possible solution as well. Let's say I'm starting a thread about coffee. I don't know much about coffee, so I will sometimes Google other forums, discussions, and articles on coffee. Seeing other people's material helps me form my own opinion. Seeing facts about coffee will help me support my discussion with facts. This is just a little technique that I use when I'm trying to write about something that I can't get started with. Also, this technique works great with essays!

SKMassey,
In other words, the act of research itself becomes the impetus of the developed idea. You obviously have a topic, and here you have the world and wealth of knowledge at your fingertips to access with a click of a mouse. Essentially, we could research and write about anything, considering this idea.

I am in a travel forum and there many questions are asked. I thoroughly enjoy that forum as I love travel and in answering those various questions I search to find answers and that search gives me a lot of satisfaction in that I too learn while teaching others.

It's been my experience that most of the people who claim to have no ideas are actually full of excellent writing topics. They are just experiencing anxiety over the fact that they don't have novel topics. The sad part about it is that this is to be expected. There are endless blogs out there talking about every topic under the sun, twenty times over even for the rarest of discussions. The likelihood that any one writer will discuss something genuinely new is approaching zero.

This is when I take the opportunity to build up their confidence by having them appeal to their personal experiences. For instance, if you are working a search term related to flea shampoo for dogs, you will be just one of thousands who are actively promoting that topic for your marketing affiliates. However, only you have that story about the time your dog caught fleas and made a horrid mess of your favorite couch when he escaped the bathroom, terrified of his bath!

This is exactly the type of personal narrative that separates the essayists from the real bloggers. It will present a conversationally natural platform for you to integrate any product pitch you have while forging a personal, and sentimental connection between that product and your reader. When you do this you cannot help but create a unique piece of writing, even if it is a topic as old as dirt itself.

I sometimes marvel at myself in that I am with a couple of writing sites where we have to create threads. I have provided thousands of threads and not a single one is a duplicate. I do not even check to see if there is anything on which I have written already. I thank myself for this ability.

I am never starved, I believe. I just sometimes don't have the time to write them. And also, it would depend on what the idea is all about. I don't write articles or blogs on the rush because I know that my niche won't get everyone else's attention. Most people nowadays would focus on something that they like or something they are interested with.

With millions of blogs that exist today on the Net it is not surprising most will be just languishing. The art of getting them on the first page is what one should aim for. Have you tried doing that? I have a blog but I have not taken it seriously. I am hellbent on doing justice to it and hould attempt to have it on the first page of Google Search.

You're like me, to be honest. I have so many ideas especially for blog articles but I just don't want. I just don't really have the time to create content for the ideas that I have. Like you, when I do write blog articles, they tend to be extremely short so not many people read it. I just run out of things to write for each article after a few paragraphs. That is why like you, I tend to stay on discussion forums. It's just a lot better as you don't have to write too much for new topics and you can enjoy discussions with other users as well

Blogs, in order to be noticed, should be long and that is one qualification for getting an AdSense account. My understanding is that the longer the blog the Ads will stay there for that amount of time. I have no hopes of ever getting an Adsense Account unless I change my way of writing and learn the art of writing long blogs.

Same here. I have tons of ideas what to write but am too lazy to research and draft out the article plus grammar and spelling check them. My blogs are recipes. In addition, I cook everyday. I have different ideas of what to cook, took photos but plain too lazy to write them out. It really depends on the writer's interest. Writing articles related to hobbies, interests or jobs are easier than journal type

I guess those things are normal for writers to have, eh? I can't really blame myself or the people who would tend to get errors specially if they are posting daily because sometimes we won't have the time to proofread our posts and articles even though it is also our job as a writer or blogger to proofread them. -_-

I have seen your recipe blogs on LiteracyBase and used to admire you for the length and precision with which you produced those blogs. If recipes is your niche you are landed I could say. Do you have your own blog on recipes?

Well, same here, it's like we have same similarities, and it's not actually like i have much ideas though, but the few i have, i can't really expand the context of the ideas to stretch, the idea into the appropriate volume required for a blog post, cause like you said, i lack patience, i always like going straight to the point, without much dragging or stressing words into two lines.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
I blame it on forums that accept short posts. I have been on such forums for years now and am used to writing short posts. With this as the background it is hampering my will to write long blogs. I have to do something about it and surely will.

If you have problems writing longer articles, you could either 1) focus on writing short stories or 2) write articles but in more than a day. That way you can have long breaks in between and you will have enough patience.

I personally rarely lack ideas or inspiration since I am the creative type. I think that you can get ideas from literally anywhere around you. Whether it's the television, the internet, the news, ... just take it and make it your own.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That is a good idea of having breaks and continuing the next day. I must try that out. About writing short stories that should be possible too as there is so much around me that I could put down into stories. The problem is giving it a start.

I don't find much trouble in expanding on an idea, but I think I do know what you mean in that some topics are just difficult to talk about for more than just a paragraph or two. Sometimes it does happen to me, but when it does, I just keep it short, because there's no reason to drone on a subject when I feel I have said what needs to be said. Sometimes, if I am feeling like the article is lacking in length or depth, I'll stop for a while and think some more about it before I publish it, because there are a few times when I am able to come up with more to add when I pause and step back.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
Even if we are able to convey what needs to be conveyed within those few words that does not carry much weight in the world of blogging. It has all to do with how long a viewer stays on a blog while the Ads are displayed. It is time therefore some effort is put by those like me to create posts that are long enough to attract viewers' interest.

I have been in that situation before and it happened when I began running a blog newly. I mean it was not a good state for a writer to be in. However, I learnt to always take some break and catch fun when I feel that I am lacking ideas of what to write and afterwards, I feel creative again.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
Taking a break is the answer to fill up our empty minds with ideas. They just flow. Do we not take breaks elsewhere too when we get back with renewed energy?

I have tons of Ideas and I am more starved for them then anything. Even though I don't work I still need to find time to do work on my website. I am either overwhelmed and can't do anything or I am super busy and I dont have the time to get anything done. I am looking forward to moving into my new apartment, maybe then I will be able to get a lot more done. Because I will have my wife there to help me every step of the way.

If one does not find time to write that again is an issue one has to deal with. But it is said what one likes to do one always finds time. Hope the steps you are planning to take will help you organise yourself, timewise.

Well I think it is going to depend on what exactly you're trying to get out of your writing. Currently, in order to optimize your blog for SEO, long winded posts are actually pretty necessary whether you like them or not. The standard recommended length for most blog posts is currently at around 1,600 words which is about seven minutes of reading material.

Anyway, I wouldn't say that I'm starved for ideas exactly. I do have plenty of ideas all the time, it's just that in order to make quality content I try to creatively string together all those ideas so that they are connected in some way, and that can sometimes be a bit of a creative struggle.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
As you have pointed out putting those ideas in a format that makes interesting reading could at times be a struggle. That is what we call writer's block. A writer may have ideas but simply cannot go further than that.

I think this would be the advantage of free writing. I so much love writing like prose writing even though some of us find it boring. Thus, I believe that we experience starvation of ideas because we tend to align our stands to what we know and what we believe. And this, would I think restrict ourselves to have this free flowing of ideas we definitely have in mind. It is hard to put everything in writing when there are standards, standards that may disagree or question what you have thought at hand. Sometimes a specific topic or subject also hinders us from writing since it demands an specific or a very particular response. That is why I go for free writing and I only write for any topic or subjects that only interest me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
That is what is required at iwriter where the requester demand that an article be written on a subject that is of interest to them. Perhaps there you may not succeed as you say you are good at writing on topics that you are familiar with.

I am not very creative when it comes to writing that's why I want to stick to non-fiction. However, there are times that I also stumble that my mind seemed to be facing a blank wall when it comes to topics for writing. In those cases, I consult my listing of ideas.

What I usually do is to note down any idea that comes to my head and my mind seemed fertile when I am driving alone. Maybe the sights that I see stimulate my mind in relation to the niche that I am writing. Like one time I saw a big truck, that gave me an idea that there might be dogs inside that truck for illegal transport. That's one good story to write, dogs for butchering.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
Noting down is extremely important as one tends to forget what comes to one's mind. This happens to me often. I too jot down whenever an idea strikes me. Anything can trigger our brain for topics to write on. Sky is the limit I could say but no matter how many ideas crop up if one has a writer's block that will be a tragedy specially if one has been given limited time to write.

I'm seriously considering to open a new blog site dedicated to my writing, the problem is it would look as a personal depository site of all my pieces because I write about different subjects and and topics, I'm still pondering on this, since it will eventually affect its monetization.
What's your take on this?

I have a surplus of ideas for my blog but the problem is finding time to organize them into coherent and interesting blog posts. I always have to prioritize my income-generating activities and my blog is not one of those. I'm pretty sure that it's something that will benefit me much later but I can afford to take things slowly when it comes to developing my blog. My niche is personal finance which is quite broad so it's unlikely for me to run out of topics to write about. The blog currently has 10 posts but I may publish another post before the end of the month.

I agree. I also have more then enough ideas. The bible says more is given to those who already have. I think its the same with ideas. I think that to get ideas and be inspired you need to stay engaged. By this I mean read newspapers, read articles and blogs online, watch the news, watch Youtube,be active on Twitter, Facebook e.t.c. Then your ideas will be endless, you will not even have enough time to put them all down or create content from them.

There are too many factors that one has to consider before writing a blog. Ideas may be there. Topics may be many but how will the audience respond to the blog? How will searchsearch engines take the story? Will it make an impact?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

If you love writing then there's no way you would have trouble in finding topics to write about. I mean there's always things that are interesting to write about and if you're a writer thinking about new topics won't be a problem.

I agree@Kakashi2020. If you like writing and you are a great thinker then the least of your problems is not having ideas. With all the online content and with all the dynamics going on around the world? I think that people who are starved for ideas are the people who don't see the possibilities in a situation and who do not want to think outside the box.In my opinion that is what writing/blogging is all about . Finding a fresh perspective on current issues.
