How to write a resume for housewife?

After I had delivered my baby boy, I had quit my 9-5 job, became a housewife for the past 10 years. Now, I had decided to jump into the workforce but I am outdated, I cannot figure out what or how should I write for my resume. Can anyone give me some tips how do I write for the huge gap of unemployment years? What reasons should I give?

Hi. I also just quit my job after I had my baby girl. It's been a year now and I wanted to get back to work. I can suggest that you just have to be honest with your resume. That you have been a homemaker for quite some time and if you need to provide a cover letter you may state that you are willing to undergo a training or something. They will look into your skills and you know for yourself that you're good at it. You just need an update or refresher, maybe.

thanks very much for your advice. I was wondering what should I say about coming back to the work force after 10 years. Can I say my reasons are due to financial problem or that my baby is a big boy now, no worries?

When writing resumes it's usually about work experiences, so you don't have to put that you've been out of work and have been a full-time mom for 10 years. It's best to say that for the past 10 years you've been doing freelance offline and online work.

This is always the plight of all women who gave birth, there is no way that they can retain their job after giving birth, they are 99% likely to lose their job and start afresh after their long maternity leave.

You can also include in your CV that you have decided to be a stay-at-home mom for a while. Being truthful will gain the employer's trust and allow you a chance . Going to and from work for a month will make you feel like you've always been working.

Is there any type of work that you did during those years that you could put on your resume. It's difficult because if you haven't, there will obviously be a bit of a gap between your last job/things and now. The best thing to do is to probably just mention that you haven't done anything for a while because of your son. I'm sure most employees will understand that is why you have such a large gap in your resume.

During the large gap of 10 years, all I did was writing articles at Blogjob, Literacybase, Hubpages, joined forum sites and earning little money here and there. I didn't get any part time job, just online jobs. Do you think they will accept it or should I just say that I took care of my baby because can't afford a maid or childcare ctr?

If you your baby is still too tender, it's paramount that you stay at home and take care of the child. There will always be a good job out there for you to get once it's more convenient for you to work outside home with your baby old enough.

But if your baby is already old to encourage your sourcing for jobs, then it's the right thing to do. Since your past jobs are all online jobs, I suggest that you stick with seeking for such jobs as well because it's where your experiences would come in adding a boost to your resume. Getting other jobs would be very difficult.

I agree that you have to be honest and the prospective employer will look for the skills that you have like if you are good in typing or you have the knack for marketing. It's not easy to sell yourself if you are presently unemployed but for sure, you have some skills that can be used by the employer so you can make an impressive resume with those skills and experience.

I think what will surely make all the difference to you are the experiences of previous jobs because without them, I think it will get a little tricky / difficult to make things happen.

I'm sorry if my comment was discouraging, don't get me wrong... But I'd rather be always realistic than always paint a rainbow in the sky.

thanks very much for your honesty. I think that adding my past job experiences should be sufficient to support whatever post I am looking for. If the interviewer thinks that I am outdated, then I guess I have to look for a lower end job

Resume writing is hard. I personally always hate it because I feel like it's not easy for anybody to write about themselves and their accomplishments. So, if I was you, I would try and make things sound very appealing - perhaps mask the unemployed period and don't just write it out in big bold letters. Briefly, mention it then right away talk about everything else that you have previously done. You don't want your future employers to dwell on that.

Other than that, the latest trend in CVs is more modern so try and find a good design online - since I assume that you will apply through the internet.

I thought of that, too. There may be sample CV for cases like this online. It may help her and bring confidence in her to pursue in applying for a job.

Tronia,

Sometimes it's very complicated to have to write about ourselves and things get worse when we have to follow some very strict rules for it. Everything seems to get boring, our mind hangs and we end up not writing what we really want in the way we want.

Your point about design also gave me a good idea. A lot of people have been trying to be extremely creative with their CV's to catch the eye of the employer. One example that I can give is that someone made a video game that showcased all his skills. Employers love this and it can help you to bypass certain things like the gap in your work history. Of course you will probably not be able to go down the road of a video game, but something creative could be useful

Don't we all hate the dreaded resume? I think the CV idea is a good one as well. I would also maybe include any volunteer or community work or service which you may have done during these past few years. Anything like charity work, helping others, Boy Scouts, or other community activities look good on a CV. In some cases, a lack of experience may even work in your favor as an employer may see you as a "blank slate" that can be completed trained in the company's image and requirements. Be proud of being a mom and for the sacrifice you made in your career and let that shine in the interviews to come! Like others here have said, be honest on the resume and just put your best foot forward.

thanks very much for your encouragements! To be honest, I have not join in any volunteer serviice at all. I had been working online for the past 10 years. Should I add this in?

Before writing that resume you have to first make a note of all your educational qualifications and experience and the kind of job that you are capable of handling.
The format would include name, gender, age, father's name, husband's name, address, email, age, marital status, educational qualifications, additional qualifications, experience, and emoluments expected.

thanks very much, I will include them. Should the working experience starts from the earliest or the latest job?

This is just a basic way to write a good resume. If those steps are followed well in writing the resume and applying for a job, if such job is meant to be secured by the person, it's definitely going to be the person's job.

Being a housewife shouldn't make you feel you might not qualify for a job. Since you used to work many years ago, just add that experience in your CV. You can also include in your resume that you decide to be a homemaker for sometime. Being honest will make the employer trust you and give you a chance. Just a 1 month practice going to and from work will make you feel like you have always been working.

Housewife CV is not easy, I had read some samples, I was wondering how would the employer believe that I could work after 10 years hibernating at home....

I don't think you need to elaborate your 10 years of being a housewife. You can simply write it on your resume that you've become a housewife for 10 years and then that's it. You don't need to elaborate more since the company will always understand the role of a housewife and there's no need for an explanation for that. They should just simply accept the fact that you chose to be a full-time mom and they should never ask you why.

thanks very much, so I won't elaborate further on the role of housewife, everyone should understand the role.

You know what, you should put your proud job which is a "Housewife" for 10 years in your portfolio because, for one, that's the truth, and two, employers will surely hire you since that is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Come to think, you're not paying for it too which is awesome. A labor of love! :=)

That's unfair, and at same time injustice. Every woman deserves the chance to go back to job, after being taking care of her family. I suggest you to do a short CV resume, look for some examples online. Usually, they will call you for an interview, so you can explain your point of view, make clear that you are able to do a training, or any kind of previous preparation for the position. They have to see your determination, and you have to make clear that you were doing freelancing, so you can use that experience for the company.

Just put what you have and be honest all the time. Don't care about them if they will judge you if they will see your resume. Be proud of who you are because god gave that kind of things. And you should be thankful to God because he sent you a gift like that. How to write a resume for housewife?

I think we should always develop ourselves, especially our strengths. Never stop too long. Let's do what we love, it will bring income. It is not necessary to work at any company, we can do freelance work. Like me, I work at home, still have time to play basketball stars, still have income, and enjoy life in my own way.
