It depends on the situation if I'm texting someone formally I will text the correct spelling of the word specially if they are asking about a job interview. But if it's a friend that I'm texting then would shortcut it. Shortcut messages are common specially if you are texting someone you know.

I do not abbreviate in texting. I really write the whole worlds. I believe that there are people who could not understand abbreviations in texting.

For me it depends on the words. Some words are still readable even thought they are abbreviated. But if it is not readable then I would just type the correct spelling just to be safe that the person reading my message understand it.

However, its an exception whenever I am in a hurry I could use some abbreviation that are familiar to me. There are certain abbreviations nowadays that are really common to the younger generations which I actually don't understand.

Same. It would always depend on the situation. I tend to get formal when texting my teachers, proffersors and others that needs to be respected but when I text or chat my friends I would always abvreviate the words because sometimes I tend to get excited over the things that we are talking about that's why it is a very big help to abbreviate words.

For me it depends with the formality and the respondent. There are people who you can text at the middle of the night when you might be half asleep and not take any care as to how the message looks. You can leave it to them to interprete or you can assume that you will explain it to them later on.
However for other people you need to be keen since the manner that they interprete the message can have certain repercussions.

Actually, there are some abbreviations that I still don't know what they mean. I believe that when it comes to abbreviated text messages, it's best used when communicating with someone whom you are always in communication with especially in an informal conversation. Just like yesterday, I was told what the meaning of the abbreviation "SMH" which means - Shaking my Head.

I don't I find it faster to just type full words. I think if you are used to abbreviation, then it would be faster for you, if your not you spend a lot of time thinking how to best abbreviate. I also think that it depends on who you are writing the text to. If it is to your mother ,father or grandparents abbreviation would not make sense because they would be unable to understand, what you are saying. I think abbreviation works best amongst your peers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I've often thought this too - certain abbreviations take the same amount of time as typing something out in full! Ends up being rather silly to abbreviate things when that's the case!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
I agree on both points.

I’m not all that familiar with abbreviation anymore, so even if I attempt to use it, I could have written out the actual word by the time I finish thinking, “Is this how you actually abbreviate it or am I just being dumb?”

Working best among your peers is a good point too. I was actually on the receiving end of an abbreviated text, and it felt super weird because it was from my former boss. I mean, I was friends with him and all but I expected the boss/employer relationship to be more formal when it came down to communication. I was slightly taken aback when he texted me like one of my high school buddies, all while talking about business matters.

There was a good amount of cognitive dissonance in that moment.

I think it depends on the abbreviated words, some are really well-known like lol, brb, and the like, but some people still use abbreviation the way they used when we don't have touch-screen phones yet, so they abbreviate by omitting vowels or using mixtures of letters and numbers which can get confusing to the person you're texting.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do, specially on social media messaging apps. I usually do shortcuts or abbreviation messages for friends and families. In terms of content writing, i use full words just to make sure that every reader understands each sentence.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This is exactly what I mentioned earlier, the best place to use abbreviations in messages is when it's for informal communications with friends, family and relatives. In such conversations, being too formal with words don't have any seriousness, so using abbreviated text ain't a big deal as long as those you are in talk with can understand what you are writing. But once the communication is meant for people whom you aren't familiar with or it's for job purposes, it's best to get rid of abbreviations.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

lei08pineda
Yes abbreviating should be done only when you talk informally to your family or friends. But if you do abbreviate when you are applying for a job or talking to your bosses, then they will have a negative feedback on you.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do agree. It is case to case bases. If it needs to be formal like writing emails regarding to your work, you cant able to abbreviate it. You need to write the worlds in full so that they can understand it very well. But if you communicating your friends or your family thru application messenger like sms or social media, you can use abbreviate some words but make that they could understand it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I definitely think the target audience affects things - if it's a close friend or family member then I might abbreviate things (as long as I know they'll understand!) but other times if it's a more work/professional context I'll usually write things out in full. It's usually for the sake of not wanting things to be misunderstood.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I totally agree with you. If you are going to communicate with your boss, then you have to be formal.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I only abbreviate my texting when I am in a hurry to send a message. But in regular times, I want my message to be very clear so my words should be written in full and even my grammar should be correct. Even during the time when there was no smart phone yet, I was not comfortable in using the accepted abbreviations because writing is part of my job in the office and I don't want to destroy my spelling habit. Now I have been seeing the word YOUR instead of YOU'RE and that is not really good for one who writes formal documents.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

RhealaineS
No. I believe that in order to communicate more effectuvely, we have to type our message clearly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
This is the way that I look at it most of the times and the thing is that you could only get to this point when you are able to do a whole lot of understanding of what communication is all about.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah you have a point on that. But some people do understand the text abbreviation and they could easily get what that is mean. Its case to case basis. At the end of the day it doesnt matter weather you wanted to abbreviate or not whats matters most is you understand and get the message of it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
I usually abreviate because it's a lot faster especially with texting you're only using your thumbs. But of course, I also consider the receiver. It will be safer to spell out the whole word to be understood when it comes to communicating with older people. The important thing is you get your message across.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NesMarcos
No, I don't abbreviate my texting because I always want to make sure that the recipient of my message can fully understand what I want to relay and to avoid misconception and misinterpretation. Shortcuts or abbreviation can be a lot benefiting to everything or anything but not in communication.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Depending on the purpose of the writing and where and who it's meant for, if the writing is meant for an informal discussion, then I would say that abbreviations wouldn't be a problem. But when you the writing is meant for a formal or business purposes, then abbreviated messages is high prohibited.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

lei08pineda
I do, but it depends on whom I am sending the message. It is much faster to abbreviate of course but it has some bad effects. It can cause some confusion. Another thing is that if one always abbreviates his texting, he/she might end up forgetting the spelling of some words. It might sound silly but it is true. Not practicing on typing the whole word spelling and always doing the shortcut is a factor that a person might be confused on the right spelling of some words. Well, that was just my opinion.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I actually don't abbreviate my text messages. I write them in full words. That's why I'm confident that my messages will be easily understood. I find shortcuts to be somewhat confusing. Especially, misspelled words.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NesMarcos
I strongly agree with this. Sending messages is an important means of communication, in my opinion abbreviation in messages can be confusing, either chat or text.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I know, right? It's really uncomfortable reading misspelled messages. Not because of the spelling. But because it makes you think harder to guess and understand what the sender is trying to say.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well that's the good thing when one doesn't use abbreviations because error is lessen specially when the message is an instruction. Its a good thing that you mentioned this because i had this experience before.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah I agree with you on that which is lots of people can relate. Like I said before it is depends on the situation when and where we can abbreviate text.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

for me sometimes I do used some abbreviation to make it quick but I do make sure that although it is abbreviated they can still understand it fully. but sometimes I'm not using any abbreviation to make sure it is formal specifically when I'm messaging a formal people. So, it means when it comes to my friends and families it's abbreviate but for others it is non-abbreviate so that they can understand the point even how long it is.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Many people do like what you are doing in texting or writing a message on chat. But this abbreviation is not applicable in email. Email is very formal and needs the kind of writing and the content should be formal also.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
I think that when I was originally introduced to texting and instant messaging chatrooms, I did in fact abbreviate as much as I could. It was mostly due to the fact that I was still in my early teens and I wanted to seem cool like all the other kids. Eventually when I started becoming more interested in literature and writing in general, I developed an aversion to abbreviation.

The way I looked at it, abbreviating most words saved you barely any time and kind of degraded the value of written of language. I mean, how much time did you really lose by writing “u” instead of “you?” It’s two letters, and typing out the whole word makes you seem much more intelligent.

Not that I think it should matter what others think of you, as only you know just how intelligent you are, but I’m personally impressed with people who take the time to write everything out properly, as it makes me feel as if they genuinely care about the conversation. Excessive abbreviation and lack of punctuation honestly makes me feel like someone has no interest in speaking to me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, honestly before yes, because I'm just using prepaid load before and load was expensive without the promos. The local telcos in our country took advantages of this technology and earn a lot just for texting. 1 php in our country per text, so you really have to abbreviate every words just to save money even it's not really appropriate to do that.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah that is one main reason before why many people decided to abbreviate their texting. Telcos companies didnt have a promo before like unlimited texting so people have limited words to type in one text that is why they did abbreviate some words.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

When it comes on abbreviating text messages I am guilty of that. It was easy and makes fast to talk to someone. But if I am texting or sending message to my boss, I always make it a point to be full and not with abbreviation.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, for me, most of the time I abbreviate text messages. I am kind of lazy when typing or texting whole text or word so I really do abbreviating because it is more faster and easier for you to text. Sometimes I do the whole word if I only need to emphasis or to understand clearly to that person.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Meaning its case to case basis and it all depends to your moods and to whom you will send that message.
I got you. I have many friends who did the same thing like what you do. No bad on that as long as they understand the words and context of it.

Sometimes when I'm in a hurry or when I'm driving and I need to text my family or a friend I would normally abbreviate my messages. Whenever I'm sending informal messages and or jokes and greetings or whenever I feel saying something to cheer up a friend or loved one, I would use abbreviated words because it looks and sounds more friendly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I used to when keypads clumped the letters together, but with smartphones which have touchscreen keyboards, it's easier to just spell out the entire word, and it also looks better and won't be misinterpreted by others.

Well, if I'm texting to my family and friends, I usually tend to abbreviate the message, specially if I'm in a hurry. But I try to write in a proper way to people from work, or to people I just met. It also depends on the way the other person answers back, if that person shorts the message, then I know it's ok to abbreviate my text. But there are people like my sister, who literally feels annoyed by abbreviated messages, so in that case, I avoid to make it short.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Well it was my opposite story. I have my sister and she loves abbreviating even in sending message in text or in chat. Sometimes I dont really understand it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's funny. Me too. I often don't understand when messages are written in shortcut. It's difficult to read. It's like trying to decipher an encrypted message. Hahaha!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

For me it would depend on the person I am texting. When it comes to work related messages, I do not abbreviate the words and send them just like a short email no matter how rush I need to send them. Text messages to friends and family, I would often abbreviate.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yes I agree it depends to the person and the situations. If it is formal,we need to write properly like typing the whole words but if its our family and friends we can abbreviate it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
It will really depend on the receiver of my message. For family or friends, abbreviating texts is just fine since they do the same thing. It will also make you faster to respond and this is one way to speed up the conversation. But for the message that has a formal or professional content, the abbreviation is not recommended. The message should be written with complete words.
Morever, in abbreviating texts, we also need to consider people that are not familiar with these shortened words or phrases. In this case, we can avoid misunderstanding and retain good communication.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Before I usually abbreviate my words when it comes to texting but when I realized it is somehow, informal, I changed my habit of abbreviating it. For me, the reason why I abbreviated my words before because of the text or character limit when it comes to texting using old phones. Also to prevent using too much time on typing that could make your thumb numb or tired. But now, I rarely abbreviate my words or texts, it seems informal for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
I believe on you that. Old mobile phones had short characters and you have limited space to fill your text message that is why we need to abbreviate our words. Abbreviating is necessary when you will send the messages to family and friends but when it comes to work,we need to exert extra effort to compose our message in full words to make it formal.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

My style is to write full sentences with full words unless am told that I have completed all the spaces that were free. That is when I cut down on some words or abbreviate some.

So in response to your question, do I abbreviate my texting? I don't text at all! I never learned how.

It may sound weird and strange but some things in the tech world have passed me by. Do you abbreviate your texting? Do you abbreviate your texting?

I always try my best to write without abbreviating. Because before when I do it I noticed that I have a lot of misspelled words everytime I write formally. I forget the spelling of words. But there are times when I am very busy and only texting friends and family, I abbreviate.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Corzhens
With the smart phone now and especially the phones with big screen, it is just being lazy if you abbreviate your text. In the olden days when the phone was not a smart phone yet, I agree that abbreviating your text is in fashion because it is difficult to type. Even the texts I receive from my connections are not abbreviated anymore. However, I find so many private messages in Facebook that use abbreviated words which is irritating.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

graciemary
Yes, abbreviating the text to someone makes it faster and easier. We usually abbreviate our response if we are talking to our family or friends. But some people abbreviate the word too much and it was very short and hard to understand. But abbreviating texts cannot be use if you are talking to your boss or people that you don't really know that much. And getting used to abbreviation may cause some difficulty in spelling and speech.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah that is what I am saying that making abbreviation of text is all depends in the situation.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

edencaga
Yeah!. I have some friends who abbreviate so much words. Sometimes they even make some letters into numbers for example E, they will make it as 3. I don't know why they do that. They just make the message more complicated. Sometimes I can adopt the words from text messages when writing on paper. Instead of completing the whole spelling sometimes I abbreviate it without noticing it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Most of the time I write my messages in whole words. I seldom write abbreviate text because I think it is unrespectful to send a message like that. It is not a good practice abbreviating your words in your message. I think it will have a negative effect in your word bank. Sometimes people may misinterpret your message so it is better to write in whole words. It is more clear and accurate.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
I agree with you on that. Sometimes when we are abbreviating out text messages we use to it and bad things like it came to a point that we forgot the correct spelling because we use to abbreviate it. Thats the one of many disadvantages of abbreviating text.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

MiaManimbo
I don't usually use abbreviated texts or words because I think that it may lead to misunderstanding specially if the person you're conversing with don't have any ideas about abbreviations. I just use these abbreviations to people that I'm close with because those are the words that we normally use. But personally, I usually use whole words in texting or in communicating. I find it very helpful for my vocabulary. I also agree that one disadvantage of abbreviating words is that we tend to forget the correct spelling of some words.

Yes I do abbreviate my texting it depends upon the person. I tend to abbreviate my texting when the person is close to me if not I often use a formal type of message including right spelling. In the variety pf language it is called 'register' where the sender adapts its way of speaking depending into the receiver.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah it all depends in the situation and in the person as well. You can abbreviate it as long as you want. What we need to make it sure is that they have to understand it. That is all matters for me. Abbreviating text also would save time as well.

In the Philippines, almost everyone does this. From SMS to IM, people use shortcuts. It has gotten to the point where if you're out of the loop these days, you probably won't understand half of what people are saying. Some people are even inventing stuff out of the fly. Like yesterday, someone used CBR. It stands for Cannot Be Reached.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah I heard that also. Most people also used abbreviation in order for them to finish typing immediately and save time. This is also in texting and different in sending emails. Emails are more of formal way of communication than chatting and texting.

It really hard to understand when they make it short to the point that it is only acronym. It is really hard to interpret because it could mean a lot of things. I spend sometimes a couple minute just figuring out the meaning of the acronym.

If I am using a smartphone, Yes! Because typing on a smartphone takes a lot of time than the computer or desktop. The keypads on your smartphone are too small that you sometimes clicked the wrong letters. But as time goes by, Our keyboard on our smartphone has a words suggestions so you will only have to click the words suggested by your smartphone to make your life a lot easier.

Well, it depends on my mood if I want to shorten the word or not but most of the time I consider first the person whom I'll send the message. I only send abbreviated word to my closest friends who knows me really well. I don't send messages with abbreviated words easily to someone who I rarely to talk with. I don't know but some people tend to get offended when you send them abbreviated words which are basically trending now a days but it seems like you are making them stupid for not knowing what it is. That is basically what they feel so it depends to whom I send my message.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

When I am using my smartphone, yes. But now typing on my smartphone have become easy because when you are typing something on your smartphone, it has a word suggestions, so you will just click the specific word that you're about to write and it can save so much of your time.

I don't send out SMS that much frequently but when I do, it's usually formal and I use little to no abbreviation. I also realize that most people who send me SMS hardly use abbreviations. I guess this is basic courtesy and something that is expected in business communication. For personal communication, I may use text-speak at times but I prefer calling because SMS can get stuck in traffic and only reach the receiver after several hours while a single call can clarify things at once.

No. As much as possible I really don't abbreviate whether I am texting my friends or superiors. Personally, I really don't find it hard with the qwerty keyboards we are all using right now. Texting is really not as much as limited to a number of characters compare to the past. It also is not very costly, so abbreviating your texts doesn't makes sense to me.

I do abbreviate my messages when I'm communicating with my friends and my siblings. We usually do it to our chat group specially we discuss something really funny we had on a specific day. Interesting discussion you have there. As for me, I don't abbreviate on my messages unless it is utterly necessary to do so. I have learned to be official in almost every conversation I have with people in my inbox. This habit has helped me to sustain healthy working relationships as well as maintaining my integrity as a writer. Think of how much abbreviating has eaten up into the current generation of millennials. It is sometimes almost impossible to understand anything written on such messages, and I would not want to subject anyone reading my messages to such torture.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Very well said. This abbreviations of text started way back when the mobile phones invented and millennials are the one started the abbreviations very much in chatting and texting. I dont like abbreviating words in texting and chatting because I feel like it was very informal and sometimes I really dont get understand the abbreviated words.

I stopped abbreviating the moment I realized that I easily forget the spelling of words. There would be times that whenever a make a memo, letter or email, that I have to stop and google if I am placing the correct spelling of a word. I now am part of the generation who ask, what that ATM mean or SMH. Yes, I feel old. I am just happy that most of my friend and colleagues are not native English speakers so they almost never abbreviate. And with smartphones now, you can text without actually typing - hello Siri.

No, I don't. Ever. Doing so makes it look informal and lousy. I know a friend of mine who does this all the time and to be honest, I hate receiving texts from her because I can't understand the message she is trying to convey.

I'd say that in my case it mostly depends on context and circumstance. Texting one of my friends that I'll be five minutes late for the get-together? Sure, I'll abbreviate in the interest of time. But anything even a bit more formal, I always try not to. It's a hard habit to break nowadays and to switch to what feels like an archaic way of typing, but I feel like not abbreviating at all would by far be the best option - there's no way to screw up and give out a bad impression that way.

I only abbreviate terms that are well known, especially non-layman terms of things we usually talk about at work. I mostly type in full because I usually use a computer keyboard when chatting or conversing online. I type faster than average so I just type the whole thing instead of abbreviating it. It looks cleaner and professional when you do it that way. But when I'm on Reddit, I do type with abbreviations. Do you abbreviate your texting?

I abbreviate a lot when I am texting. I do this as long as the receiver of my text understand my message. When it comes to formal form of text messaging like when you are texting your boss or trying to explain about a subject in regards with your business. Its better to not abbreviate, if you do so it only promotes confusion.

Also there are times when I need to text while I'm driving. I automatically use abbreviations during this instance. Also when I'm in a meeting and my girl texts me, I always text back but I use super short abbreviations so as not to disrupt the meeting.

Abbreviations in texting have become significantly out of control. but, we need to maintain tempo. I bear in mind some time again, while those new-fangled devices got here out and that i got a text that said, “IDC.” To this present day, no person will inform me. I ask, they actually say, “I don’t care.” reputedly there are acronyms and abbreviations out there that defy explanation.

Before, when I was still in high school, my classmates teased me because of my texting style. I was too formal and I really followed the standards of grammar. One classmate told me that I should learn how to abbreviate, and make it like a young person is texting. My friend back then, told me that my texting style was for adults, so I had to change it. I unknowingly followed her but regretted in the end. I stopped and went back to my old style, it is because it affected my writing style. You may be thinking, why it affected me. Texting actually, was such a trend for us teenagers back then that every minute of our lives, we texted our friends, classmates and other textmates. Now, as I am a professional and I have to let myself get used to formal writing, as much as possible, I don't make shortcuts.

I don't do that. I am afraid if I got used to it, I might accidentally use it in a formal article, which is a really embarrassing if that happens. Although, when I was still in highschool I used to do that a lot.

No, I don't abbreviate my messages. Aside from the reason that I find it unpleasant, I believe that the way we wrote or compose our messages tells something about ourselves. I keep it specific, I even observe proper capitalization and punctations. Also, abbreviating messages or using incorrect punctuation marks might lead to misinterpretations.

I believe that in a few years text marketing is going to be one of the quickest and most effective way to market your business, inform your customers about new "hot" deals, etc. How your text is presented or written is for that reason very important.

Abbreviations may make it harder for someone to understand what you mean. So though it's easier to use abbreviations everyone should try to fully spell out words. This would be good for you in the long run because if you effectively get a message across people will want to visit your site or make a phone call to find out more about a product you are telling them about.

There's something decent and proper in writing the correct and complete word for me. In this fast and high-tech age that we've been having, I find peace and sanity in taking my time writing and reading the complete words and no shortcuts. It reminds me of a simpler time. IDK, I just did not really buy into the whole idea, I'd be LMAO if I ever get used to these acronyms for the lay-Z people.

Using abbreviation is not that easy for me even before. I really type the exact word when I am texting even if it is just for my friend no matter how long it is, typing the exact word is nothing to me maybe because I used to do it and it is just a normal doing of everyday. But I am not against using the abbreviation its just that I am not use to. If i recieved a reply using a abbreviation I don't care also as long as i can understand theres no problem with me.

I don't use a mobile phone but I see my kids' messages and messaging. I thought abbreviating in texting was the norm. Isn't that the way everybody sends text messages? Whether they abbreviate or not I would appreciate it if they would not TEXT and DRIVE. At least, don't do it when I'm in the car! Hope my kids are reading this.

Love,
Mom
