Borrow Ideas From Others

Borrow Ideas From Others

It’s really easy for someone to make an accusation of plagiarism nowadays.  That thought makes it  harder for people to borrow ideas from others when they are creating content for their websites.

When the Hunger Game books were published, Stephen King accused the writer of having “stolen” the premise from “the running man.” That accusation had no effect at all. Many people still read the “Hunger Games” books and many more watched the films.

Whether Suzanne Collins borrowed something from “The RunningMan” or not it made no difference to the consumers.  And many didn’t even notice any similarities. What can we learn from this?

If you come across something (an article, video, etc) which you think might interest your readers then don’t be afraid of using the idea to create something new for your readers.

I think that people misunderstand plagiarism. I think that no two people can sit down and come up with the exact same ideas. Every niche has its own theories but no two people can discuss them in the same way. There is no way you can read an article or book and interpret it in the same way. Everyone has their own way of expressing their ideas and expressing their words. Plagiarism is so obvious, its word for word or just a little spin. You are supposed to use others ideas to come up with your own.

I agree, an original idea could be a perspective of the past and created thru views and thoughts of the present. Its the same way how people create even in arts. Some call it innovation but actually the foundation of the idea comes from previous experiences and history.

In general a lot of ideas are repeated and recreated afresh. It is the continous manner and cycle through which all things grow and evolve.

The Bible says history repeats itself. There is nothing new under the sun. I believe people of the past has done it. The present people just discovered them again.

I agree, but some things shall be done right. I think things like Noah did shall not be repeated. Humans are still humans. Even though they may have done some thing wrong you still have to save human. Even if it hurts you a lot.

Yes. The writing manner you are referringvto is called copywriting my friend. Where one takes in ideas from a blog or website and converts them into their own.

Well said. No two people can write exact words. One must have plagiarized.

I believe that ideas can be borrowed. Plagiarism is copying everything word for word. I believe its not bad if you learn from ideas of others.

Listening to the idea of others is a good thing to do. it opens up your mind to something which you have not thought before. Just be careful to use that idea. Make sure that it has good benefits with it.

Ideas can come from our own minds. They can also be generated by others. If you have no or lack in ideas. I believe you can borrow from others. But first try to exert all efforts in forming your own ideas.

I agree with you. Most people think that as long as their articles are long enough, it wouldn't be too obvious or too important if the copy something word by word. Everypme must know the dangers plagiarism as it will really break your credibility.

I would rather not borrow an idea from others. I would make my own ideas so that people would have second though about it. It is not good to borrow and even copy any ideas. Make your own originality and people will love it for sure.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes that is exactly right, It is better to have our own ideas since it sounds weird and unacceptable if other people would say that we just borrowed certain concept to other people creations which is really bad and annoying at some point. It is much better to have the originality that othe people wants for some creation or concept wether it is in book or movies. We must make our own and improved it at the most possible way.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
That is very true. Everyone deserves the best and borrowing an ideas is not part of it. People should also know the effects of doing this such kind of thing. It is not healthy to the original one to copy what he have done for long time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
This is alos great my friend. But you will also find several niches where coming up with something original can be difficult and you have to depend on what others have done. Such include the fields where people have to use statistical data or scientific facts.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NerdIndeed
I agree with you on the fact that borrowing ideas from others is a form of discourtesy. However, nowadays it is not as easy to claim that your concept is original since there is a plethora of articles, blogs, vlogs, references, etc. floating on the internet. There is a popular influencer I know that said: "Ideas are free unless strapped down by contract or patent."

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I hate to say that borrowing ideas is common in our local movie industry although it seems to be curtailed now in the digital age. There was the movie of Emilio Estevez about a dead companion that they pretended to be alive so that people will not suspect. It is a comedy that I forgot the title. It was copied by a local movie that starred the 2 most popular comedians in that era. In writing, I know that some writers read stories of popular writers but not to copy or plagiarize but to get inspiration although sometimes the original gets in the way that they think it has become their idea.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's true, when you think about it there are movies and stories that are actually familiar or similar from other movies in the past. The good thing about movies is even the story is familiar the ability of cinematography to create twists thru characters, events and special effects makes the movie new and interesting.

Yeeah they struggle to breathe new life into the content they repeat and as such making theovie to seem fresh and even they have some original aspects. Sometimes we even tend to fall in love with the newer repeated things.

I think everyone picks up bits and pieces to formulate new ideas for articles and stories - it might be something they've read in the news, or in a novel, or even something off a TV show. Like jaymish3 said above, there's a distinct difference between using ideas to formulate your own take on something, or straight out plagiarizing. Plagiarism is incredibly obvious and you'll often see the exact same words used (or portions of sentences) and it's not even like anyone has taken the time to think about things differently.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I do agree that a totally unique and original work nowadays is like a needle in a haystack. Most of the time writers just get ideas from other articles to create content. I don't think that it's plagiarism but it's still copying.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Agreed - sometimes copying can be a good thing, when ideas are expanded on, or new and better creations are formulated. I do think that acknowledging the sources where they got their ideas from though can be helpful and can also avoid causing any offence to anyone.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
It is common in writing to include the sources. Depending on the content you are creating you can either do it via a section of references after the article or through hyperlinks.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
These days I definitely prefer to use hyperlinks when it comes to giving credit - that way it's easier for people to follow a link direct to the original sources website Borrow Ideas From Others

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
Yeeah plagiarism is so obvious that I do not even think that one should ever catch themselves doing it as a reputable writer. I mean there will always be instances when you feel that whatever you are doing is just transferring the content from one source to another. A sinple plag check will also confirm such.

It is not bad to gather some ideas from the ideas of other people. Eventhough some might take it too seriously, I believe that it should be something that you should be proud of. Having someone who got inspired by your own ideas is nice since you had someone who developed more of your ideas. I guess the most possible solution here is to give credits to whom you got inspired for your ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
The credit part is hugely important, I think. You never want to get on the bad side of someone who you've been inspired by, and giving credit where it is due helps people feel like you're acknowledging them and what they've contributed.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ajahcuizon
I agree. It is like a thank you gift for the person who gave you an inspiration. On that way, they won't take it as stolen ideas. Instead, they'll be happy that someone got inspired of their works.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
That's a really nice way of looking at it - a thank you gift! It's nice to show your appreciation and that you drew inspiration from them, and that can be a very special thing to many people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ajahcuizon
I agree that it could be special to other people. You got inspired by their work, they got inspired because someone got inspired by them. Kinda hard to understand but what I am trying to say is that its a win-win thing for me. You also won a friendship with other people right. You just have to be open to the actions of other people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think it is not of borrowing ideas but it should be inspired by other stories. I understand that no two people can express their thoughts using the exact words that they can use. But I believe that they can come up with the same idea and express it in their own way. All of us can have the same idea because people might have the same experience, failure, or happiness in life. But what important is we know how to express ourselves in the most unique way.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ajahcuizon
I agree. Everyone has their own way of expressing their idea. Eventhough the idea is the same, they both have different perpective and way of delivering it. Everyone has their own experiences that he can use to relate the story. I cannot call it stolen idea because it just like an inspired idea that came up with other ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I think borrowing ideas or some points from other writer's works are completely normal although it mustn't look like a complete copy of the original content. If it's just a copy and paste piece then that's plagiarism.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It is easy to be inspired by others work specially during mental block. Not only that other persons brilliant ideas would somewhat push us to blend and twist and imagine some more to jump out off the mental block wall but this also gives us a fresh new way to think things through. Now, generally writers exist because they want to express, but today if you ask writers what pushed them to write, many would actually say it is because a certain person or a book, movie, or an article of the same genre they've written inspired them. With popular films this is a big issue but could hardly matter if the plagiarized piece was favored by the ton. Two people might think of the same fire, but not two people would think the same how it dances.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think the right word would be inspired. As writers, it's easy to be influenced by the work of other authors. Our writing skills is essentially a reflection of our lives. That includes all the books and works we've read in our lifetime. All of those influences our writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's hard to really come up with original ideas nowadays. I mean with the number of people alive, almost every idea has been thought up already. What's important is generating an idea that's completely you. Meaning a culmination of all your experiences and influences.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Do you actually realize that the best writers are the individials that are avid readers. They
are people who are used to reading and as such have a huge reserve for words. They easily establish unique styles in writing while perfecting the old ones. They also show passion in this sector and as auch reading needs to be consistent and a repeated habit.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

romyter013
That's the exact word. I mean we read, we appreciate them and they are being an example to us that's why we are writing because we are so inspired because of their work. I still don't agree that we borrowed it from anyone - that's it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

rlpzbeermoney
That's true. People nowadays just want to keep things for themselves. That's why in a way, they don't want other people to move up in life. Writers in a way are opposite those people. They share their knowledge and passion to so many people and it affects and inspires aspects of one's life.

It's hard to create original content nowadays. Many stories and ideas now are based on things that are created in the past too. My view on creativity is "adding your own touch to things that already exist". Find something that already exists and add your own idea to make it unique.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
That is right. You might create a content that is similar to other's content unintentionally. You might have the same idea with others what important is that you can deliver your own in your most unique way. Original content does not mean that it is a new topic. As long as you are giving your own views, this will be considered as original.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yup. Ultimately, if you add your own ideas to things, you will be able to make it unique. Most of the big companies now are just made from ideas from the past and they add a modern twist to it. Most of them utilize the technology that we have today.

I normally believe that all the ideas we use are stolen or plagiarized. New ideas do not exist anymore.

In fact we copy much from others. You can borrow or even buy ideas from other people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's what I am doing in this forum. I borrow or rather consume all the ideas that was presented here in this forum and any other forums that I joined. Plagiarism is copying the work of another writer word by word with the exact meaning that its trying to convey. We all be needing references for our work may it be an article, non-fiction story, news etc. So borrowing an idea from another person is not exactly a plagiarism offense. It is just possible that your work has become a reference of another writer. Of Course no writer would admit such offense.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think people should learn what are the difference form plagiarism and getting inspired from other writers. Plagiarism I think is when you copy someone's work word by word. It can be also called plagiarism if you stole the idea from someone without really modifying it. I always get inspiration from others to be able to write. However, I always must modify it so I can call it my own. I know there are a lot out there where our ideas could be the same but we must learn how to deal with it in our own without having an all-out war with each other.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

romyter013
I guess thats how they see it but if someone tried to give an idea about the topic, well I guess what we need to do is it try to elaborate it get the deeper meaning about it. Something what we know more about it. Yes i think its not about borrowing their ideas, its about appreciating and agreeing more in positive respond I say.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, creating time to be comprehensive with the ideas that we got from people can go a long distance in making things look better and fine at the end. Not many be fine with that plan, but as long as you use the best reference method, I see nothing bad in that.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
I guess that is actually the sad reality. You know, if you are the first one who conceptualized that idea but other people make it more popular and then they gained all the credits and the benefits. I believe that's already happening in different industries and yes some people may seem don't mind it all. Well, there are a lot of ideas that are common and used by many authors and writers but there are actually unique ideas which are sometimes caught to be plagiarized by others. Personally, I think you are right that you can actually get some ideas to some articles or whatever resources as long as you will have your own way of expressing it and with new ideas out of it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

My view on this matter is that writers can discuss the same topic and there is nothing wrong with that. How they discuss it and what are the points made should somehow have differences since there are no two minds that are completely alike. You can find the idea from other writers and start your own. Use it as an inspiration but do not pattern your work from it.

Cool. You have a great point there. Yes, all people have different perceptions with existing idea/s. That's the thing. I think we have innovative ideas where in you can get someones idea and get another ideas from the other in a new way which create renovation. We can say it's original but he/she uses references for him/her to create new form of idea from those references. People exist thousands years up to now so I guess there's no such thing as original now, only renovations.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This is kind true to am extent as we have come to notice that what many are now doing is developing ideas from what others are doing. You get the ideas and try to improve on it as this is one way that you get to become better at the end of the day.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
Right. That's the word - renovation. The processes today is just creating new ideas out of exiting ideas. It is now up to you how will you make it interesting for the others to read or to like it. You have a great point there and this is actually what I think too.

I think it's actually a good thing to build on the ideas of others! It's how we formulate new things and strengthen our stances on certain topics, by learning more about what has been thought of before us.

Just like in telephones, before we used telephones when calling someone until the cellphone was discovered and invented so the enhancement of the product is there which is we cannot only call someone but we can also text them or play games. Yes, we can formulate new things out of one thing to another.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think that borrowing ideas was already a trend before a long long time ago, It was not anymore new since every people are already doing it for some reason and purpose. The only thing that we should do now is on how to make that ideas more helpful and seem to be original in anyways since we must be creative sometimes and do the things that are right.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I think that's a great way to look at things. Building on ideas and learning how to be better is a strength that the world needs - it's how so many brilliant ideas are formed. If we didn't build on people's ideas we'd be forever starting at square one, and that would be ridiculous!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

edencaga
Yes, right. It's not new anymore as people already did that before our times. That's what we really need now, to create more ideas from out of the box. An idea that people don't usually do or think that this thing is possible or something like that.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

coolavender
Borrowing ideas from others is not something new or irregular. When researching for a project, we typically encounter other people's work and write our own based on what we have learned from different sources. We may also expand on a single idea and make it more useful for the readers. The same idea can be hatched anywhere and our source is also probably not the original proponent of the idea. What is wrong and illegal is plagiarism where you copy another person's work verbatim or significantly and present it as your own.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
What I have come to realize is that getting ideas from others is not that easy especially when we are talking of what we write on the online surface. It maybe easier when you are just getting those ideas for another thing, but for writing, it is definitely going to be difficult.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The truth is that some people have this problem of not being very creative when it comes to developing new ideas, so they have to rely on others to help them with their own ideas. The internet is a pretty darn huge place—like, unimaginably huge. In this digital age there is no such thing as an original idea. If you think that you’ve come up with something original, odds are that a hundred other people have already thought of it.

Does that mean that you shouldn’t write about it? Of course not. The fact is that each and every one of us are going to reach different audiences. Even if someone writes about an idea you had in mind, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to reach your particular audience, so they might end up missing out.

Don’t plagiarize, but also don’t be afraid to borrow ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

edencaga
Plagiarize is different from borrowing someones idea. Plagiarize is something that you steal from someone and you never give any credit to his or her work. You did not ask for permission to borrow his or her idea and your pretentious that the work is yours and that's absolutely wrong.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Well yes, I’m entirely familiar with the concept of plagiarization. It’s taking someone’s work, word for word, and claiming it to be your own. It’s literally just stealing someone’s body of work.

But one also has to ask, where is the line drawn? Some people would say that taking someone’s work and just spinning the words around a bit would also be considered plagiarization. I don’t think it’s wrong to borrow general ideas, but if you’re copying their exact same format and just changing the words around a bit, I’d say that could be considered plagiarism as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

edencaga
Yes you are right. I think it is still considered as plagiarism. When you want to borrow some ideas, make sure that it's not only one content or product and not copying the whole thing instead you should have other references aside from what you choose, for it to considered as your original.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There isn't bad in borrowing ideas but we must make sure that we are tributing the ones who is responsible in how you came up in that idea. Give them a credit and don't be greedy because of the fame. Always ask for permissions if you are allowed to use it sp that you cannot be accused by plagiarism. Lastly, gather evidences that he/she approved your request like letters of approval etc.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jaymish3
@Gilgamesh I think that applies to academic writing. If you are writing for a mainstream audience borrowing ideas is unforgivable even if you ask for permission. The reason people would want to read an article on a blog or magazine is for originality. No one wants to read what they already know. Use people's articles to find out what knowledge is out there and build on that to come up with your own ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
I don’t think that I necessarily agree with your point. You’re right about people not wanting to read what they already know, but the fact is that a single website isn’t going to be able to monopolize certain subjects or ideas.

Every website caters to a certain demographic, and not one site is going to reach everyone. For example, you might run a blog similar to a competitor’s, but it just so happens that you don’t share the same audience members. Does that mean that you shouldn’t write about a topic just because your competitor already has? Of course not, because then your audience would be missing out.

This concept is extremely prevalent on sites like YouTube where certain types of videos tend to trend. Two competing channels might make similar videos and still get lots of views, simply because they don’t share the same demographic.

I already experience before borrowing some ideas to my colleagues when I was still studying, I just copied his idea and improve it more so that it will become more interesting. The idea turns to be more informative and impressive since it was modified and improve for the better.

This is a tricky one. I just ran into it writing a book on relationships. In the end, the same things have to apply, but usually some one has already covered them. For example, nobody wants a diva for a friend, but someone had already written that and my researches showed a fair few people had said that in one form or another. How could I then be original because the idea was already out there, yet, how could I write a book and not put the relevant information in?

The answer is, write it in a new way, not referring to what you read, or ensure you acknowledge where the idea came from. I wrote my own stuff on "soft skills" in a book, but someone coined the concept. What I say is not related to what they say, but I intend to put the reference in as the concept is theirs. How I use the concept is not.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jaymish3
@ Denis P once your audience realize that your idea is the same as someone else's especially if you don't acknowledge that in your own content, you are in big trouble. Once your audience realize this fact they will be leaving you in droves and claiming that you plagiarized. If your content is the same you need to find a different angel to tackle it from. As we all know content is king. People who find a way to create content from a fresh angel are the most successful especially long term.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't see anything wrong with borrowing an idea or drawing an inspiration from another person's work and then create your own new work as long as you don't go and copy 100% of the person's hard work and put it out as your own new creation. Doing that is absolutely wrong and should never be justified in any way whatsoever. Writers should try and be unique in all of their work. It shows a sense of maturity.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's a good thing to do because you can know other people's perspective on how they think on a thing and also on how they made a content. If you can read all the content that they made every time, you can also be like them in the future.

It is a great honor for writers to be quoted when their lines are used by others. It means that they have been relevant and what they have written is appreciated. However, if people blatantly copy, without stating where it came from, is a direct insult to the writer. There are ways to appropriately borrow ideas word-by-word from others. One of those is the APA In-text Citation Style. Many of us might have learned that back in our College years, but many forget how and when to use it.

This is a good thing because if you borrow ideas from other you can have more thoughts in your mind, just make that idea at least unique even you only borrowed it from others.

You may have same views and opinions about a topic but it does not mean you copied an idea of others. Others may read other articles then come up an idea of elaborating that topic, it does not mean you borrow ideas but you add something more to that topic.

I am a fan of the Hunger Games but I haven't heard of "The Running Man".

I agree that two persons could happen to think of a same idea at almost the same period of time. Circumstances may be viewed by two person, see the same thing, write about the same thing, have the same opinion BUT surely would differ from presentation of it. Originality nowadays is a little hard to protect specially since almost everyone sees your work. But to deviate is different from copying. It is no plagiarism if you just happen to have the same idea.

Throughout history humans have been standing on the shoulders of giants in most of the inventions. This expression has accurately illustrated how humans discovered new thoughts incrementally and the development of human history is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Therefore, it is not a crime if one were to copy and improve upon someone's idea as long as the contribution of the person is acknowledged.

Borrowing ideas from others has always been there ever since. It's not that bad since it actually starts a new trend in the writing industry. The same idea or concept becomes even more popular. In my opinion, The Divergent Series and The Maze Runner series also have a similar concept but I enjoyed the both of them overall.

Plagiarism is when you totally copy paste everything, like there is no paraphrasing or whatever and you did not give credits to the real owners. I think it's okay to borrow some ideas to others as long as you did not get all of the content which is originally written.

Maybe not completely copy their work, but i get inspired by others and their ideas. After that i write down my own experiences based on others ideas.

There is nothing wrong with borrowing ideas from others as long as you don't copy paste everything and as long as you know what you are doing. You have to do correct indications if you are highlighting words of another person's work then you should at least cite them. It's the least you can do. You are not going to get plagiarism as long as you are doing what is right.
