The stenographers main job was to get dictations usually from the office boss. It is common for an office secretary to know stenography because it is part of her job. But with the digital technology that we have, almost everyone is on the computer, tablets and smart phone that typing is a must. With that fact I don't see any need for stenographers anymore unless the boss cannot type or does not care to type.

I think because we are in computer age. It can still be done but with the use of tablet. If before its done manually on paper, now its going to be on a gadget.

Nowadays most office meetings and board meetings are recorded thanks to modern technology. Some are even being video recorded. Nowadays all it takes is a good voice recorder or an efficient smartphone.

I agree. Since we already have the capability and resources to easily keep all our notes down in one place, there are some jobs or things that used to work that are not starting to diminish. Since sternographer writes the dictations from their boss before, bosswould likely choose to type their own words now instead of hiring a sternographer. It is also a way to save money and time.

I think stenographers are a dying breed because it's almost obsolete. I know that it's only being used nowadays in court case hearings. I really can't understand why it's still being used since we've got all kinds of recording equipment available.

You have a point. Since we have different ways to record something and type sonething, it would be really reasonable that this type of job is no longer needed.

I sincerely apologize if the title looks like this. I wondered why it appeared as "Arek stenographers are still in demand"?
I remember that I entered " Do you think stenographers are still in demand"? as the title of this topic.

I don't think that stenographers are still in demand as I've never heard of a stenographer before in my life. From a quick Google search, I saw that it's a typing device. With people on computers nowadays, I don't think stenographer are still available. I believe they are already obsolete.

Same here I have no idea what it is. I dont think it is on demand nowadays. Computers are very popular in all aspects of business, schools and etc. Stenographers are not as important as what it was before.

This was also the first time I heard of it but with the description I have searched, I also think that they are already obsolete. Since the technology rose up very fast, every people have the ability record everything they want to record. They will prefer not to spend on somethings that they can already do with themselves.

A stenographer is a person whose job is to transcribe speech in shorthand. It does not refer to any device. But I agree with you that with the help of computers, stenographers position are not that in demand. ;-)

I agree that the market for stenographers is shrinking as time goes by. The type of CEO's we have these days are more technologically adopted. If they want their personal assistants to do something, they dictate it onto their phones and send it to them on whats app or email. Its not like before when CEO's used to dictate to their personal assistants and expect them to get it all down. I think there is no more work for stenographers. However they can join other careers like transcription.

I think that stenographers are not anymore indemand in these days because of the fast growing innovation in science and technoloy where evrything is made possible now. It is very rare to see some stenographers except for those people who have some court functions since it is really needed there. Due to the advancement in technology, many stenographers are slowy dying and many companies are not anymore hiring them since technology can already do that for them which is really has an advantages and disadvanatges on certain things.

That's a good point, in the courtroom is probably the only time I see stenographers and I'm sure in some parts of the world we'll even see that being phased out to move towards technology-based court recording over handwritten notes.

I don't think there's still a need to learn stenography in this digital age. In meetings and interviews, for example, the secretary who takes the minutes uses a digital recorder and her smartphone to record the conversation. Decades ago, stenography was one of the subjects in secretarial and administrative courses. It has been replaced by computer operations course. The function of stenographer is usually performed by the secretary so I don't think anyone has lost a career when it was replaced by digital gadgets.

Nowadays stenographers are not in demand as they used to be. Now with the use of computers and smsrtphones work is now cheaper. One can type fast and make notes

I definitely don't think where I live there's much of a market for them. I think as we progress more and more into different technologies, a range of different industries are becoming obsolete and people are having to look for new career paths. I wouldn't even know where to start if I was looking for a stenographer!

I have not really heard of a vacancy for a stenographer position for a long time already. I used to work for a recruitment firm and used different job posting site but have not encountered stenographer postings. So in my opinion, it is no longer in demand. We all know that technology made it possible to do things the easier way. With just a smartphone, you can take down notes or even record voice or video to go back to whenever you need to recall information.

i remembered this when I was in high school, so many strokes to memorised, so many chapters to do, but I enjoyed our class because our teacher never fails to make story while doing the lecture. But you guys are right, these kind of writings and books are so hard to find now these days but I'm still glad I experienced this to be included as part of my subjects in my high school life.

Speaking of stenography, I remembered when I was in my junior high school days and I think it was already ten years ago. Not exactly, but one of our subject was actually stenography. We have taught how to write and read the language of stenography. That time, it was so cool to me. It actually felt like you already have one great talent that you could be proud of. But now, I think stenography was slowly fading in the trend and also losing its tract to be useful in the industry. I don't even get any news about a certain successful event or whatever with the help of stenography. The worst part on me is I have actually forgotten my knowledge on it. How sad.

I never experienced studying stenography but got interested in it. I remember when I was a kid, I would copy strokes that my aunt made without even knowing what is written. She works as a secretary and as a kid I think knowing stenography is cool because you can write secret messages that you and other stenographers can only decode.

Right, its really great to write something secret messages or words that not all knows about it but not from our Steno teacher. There's this one time, me and my close friends tried to write something about our crush from the other section class. We were laughing and all that about the guy but accidentally the paper just flew thru the window and its our Steno teacher who picked it up from the floor. The only words we said that I can remembered: "Why her?" For so many people who can picked up the paper but her. So she just gave us the paper and left casual. After that incident, we make sure that we submit our projects, home works or anything she asked on time because we were so scared she will reveal our secret. LOL

I think stenographers are still indemand to some places where technology is not yet actively present. Many people in remote areas still used stenographers for record purposes since they lack the technology that they should be currently used nowadays to make their work and life easier.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
Maybe you are right with what you think. Maybe there are still some fields that use stenography as part of their jobs. But we couldn't really deny that technology replaces the purpose of stenography already. They say that stenography is helpful to people whose job is to interview people and the art of taking down notes so fast is using stenography style of writing. Well, that is when the technology is not yet as modernized as today. If the journalist wants to interview people to a place where technology is not their thing, that journalist can actually use modern recording devices nowadays instead of the doing the interview in the old way like manual writing on a paper.

While I was still in the secondary school, we did this shorthand as a form of subject and the truth remains that it was never easy at that time for any of us to write it perfectly. The coming of technology such as computers have become a big threat to the people that got this type of skills and I think that the demand has really reduced.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I won't worry that much for these people because I know that stenography is usually just one among the many skills of secretaries and administrative assistants. Back then, companies rarely hired plain stenographers. They usually hired executive assistants or secretaries with knowledge of stenography or shorthand. Secretarial courses commonly offered stenography as one of the subjects. In fact, some business courses before my generation also required a study of shorthand and typing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Yeah, this is the thing as learning about the skill of shorthand was even being thought at a secondary school level to us back then. This means that it was a common skill that someone can easily learn without having to brag about it. However, those without the skills then found it difficult to fit into the working arena.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
True, because of this generation's technologies that's why the demand on stenographers reduced and I'm afraid stenography will fade away totally in the industry. Though for sure, stenography will just be adapted to technologies but the manual stenography art is losing its demand already.

I do think that Stenographers are a dying breed because everyone has a recording device nowadays. In the old days stenographers are necessary to take dictations and minutes of the meetings, but nowadays all it takes is the built-in recorder which every mobile and smartphone has.

With the increasing improvement in our technology, stenographer jobs might be one of those jobs that could become less needed. Most of us know that a lot of jobs are greatly affected by automation. People lose jobs and some company shuts down.

As with many fields of work, I think technology is slowly going to be phasing out the work of human stenographers. I know that they are still actively used in court hearings and such, but otherwise, I can’t really think of any other situations where stenographers are still used.

In terms of technology, speech recognition and artificial intelligence is getting more advanced by the day, so odds are that we’ll come to the point where computers can 100% accurately record and transcribe human speech. A lot of people are going to be out of work due to advancements in technology.

Maybe in other countries they are in high demand but in the USA, stenography is a skills set that not too many have nowadays. They used to teach it when I was in high school (the 70s). I don't know when they stopped or if they stopped, but my kids never learned stenography in school. I can live without knowing stenography. I'm upset because I found out that some kids can't read cursive handwriting. I'm very upset about that!

In my country in the Philippines, stenographer still do exist but just only limited in numbers because of the decreasing demand for it which makes that particular job to be obsolete nowadays.I think it is mainly because of the increasing advancement in technology which makes the traditional turns into nothing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Yes exactly, it's the advancement in the world technology in every field that has affected the stenography in a very negative manner which makes it seem to be heading into extinction.

I'm sure it's hardly been taught at schools today, even if it is, it's still going to be few students that would take interest in studying it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes that is true because students would now prefer the use of modern technology since it is more convenient to have rather than pursuing the traditional way before. I am thinking that as time pass by stenographer would slowly diminish since their task can now be handled by the improving technology that we have. But despite of this it will give negative effects to those people who are just depending on stenographer as their main source of livelihood.

I would guess this is a dying occupation due to computer technology. It probably started to do so with the advent of the dictaphone. The dictaphone is obsolete because anyone who wants to do so can dictate to their computer and it will write what they say.

However. I just did a little research and it seems that in the Courtroom, at least, stenographers are still needed.

I know nothing about courts, but perhaps you are not allowed to take any form of computer technology in there. Certainly, you cannot do so in a prison and even staff are limited in their Internet use. I know this because I regularly wish for my mobile phone to look up scriptures when I speak in a detention centre.

We are in the computer era where technology advancement is very fast and we can't deny nowadays that everyone types notes or any text based information for themselves. Which we can conclude that stenographers are not in a demand within these days. There are some cases when the person doesn't seems to care into typing where stenography can take place. Overall it isn't timely right now.

I'm not that sure. I believe court hearings still have them. But at some point in the future, I'm sure they would opt in to do video recordings instead. It pretty much serves the same purpose anyway.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes stenographers are still needed by courts since they are not yet changing there views about the growing advancement in technology. But maybe in due time if they realized that it is more worth to change those traditional stenographers into some video recordings.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NerdIndeed
True. I am no expert about it, but I guess stenographers are still in courtrooms because there is a valid reason why they are still there. One reason could be it's easier to mark print statements and consider them as exhibits instead of digital ones.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
The court system will always be in need of stenographers because it's too risky to have dictation placed onto disks or digital files only. If those disks are lost or files destroyed or erased, that's gonna be a big problem for the case. However, most courts and judges keep their resident stenographers for long periods of time. These jobs very rarely become available unless a steno' quits, retires or passes away.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NerdIndeed
I see. I guess those positions also require you to have knowledge with the legal law as there are terms used in court hearings that are not usual to the ordinary person, such as subpoenas, amicus curiae, mens rea, etc.

I actually can see some have adapted to the advancement of technology. So, stenography is really like other species, extinct.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I believe not yet. Stenographers still have good use today although you're right. Gradually they are being replaced by technology like for example, in a court hearing, implementation of video capturing is in place and who knows maybe soon enough stenographers too.

There has been a steady decrease of stenographers nowadays because there are many technical solutions that replaces the use of shorthand writing such as voice recorder etc. But some professions needs a shorthand writing skills such as court reporter and journalist which is a vital skill that they should possess.

Stenography was a great form of documentation then especially when there is a need to be secretive as it's only those that have the skill to read short hand can understand the message being passed across. But at the moment, it's a fading trend as the world is more digitally inclined.

In our country, stenographers aren't in demand anymore. Though we are thankful of the developing technology that has helped us through the years, I am personally afraid that the future generation will forget about the said term, the job and its purpose.

Stenography might just remain in the "history", in the "future."

I still see stenographers in a different kind of workplace. Especially on a court room there still have stenographers. But for me later on they will not we in demand. There are lot of styles or application that the technology gave us to replace their work.
