Obsolete but amazing relics to remind us of the past. In my highschool there was an old typewriter which was maintained well. Although it was not in use, we could still touch it and have a taste of how people used do before the modern computers were a thing.

I still see people that make use of it in some schools and I have to say that it is really amazing to see that. It takes a whole lot of skills to be able to make use of the typewriter to type some documents as well.

Wow I think if I had an opportunity I aould pay to see people use them and appreciate their work of art since it can only be described as artistic and amazing.

I could still remember doing it when I was in College. We have a typing subject. We are taught how to typewrite very fast. Everyone of us has typewriters. Its good that I passed this class.

I remember how we take the typing exam during college using a typewriter. The teacher will make us sit in front of the typewriter one by one with a blindfold. Grading is based on how we put our fingers in the keys and how many errors we have committed in typing. The professor dictates sentences that we need to type while blindfolded.

That must be hard to do. As far as I remember, the keyboard of typewriter is harder to press compared to the computer's keyboard. We never did that in school. I only used this at home to do my projects or homework.

That was neat! I bet it is challenging if the keys are tough to punch and your little pinky finger is dainty. I was able to take this exam and I can still remember the sentence. "Little Zeny was dancing in the rain." That was my sentence and most of the letters are the keys that uses the ring finger and pinkies. It was a fun exam. Those kind of exam are more fun than written exam. I remember our class gigles with anticipation for each punch of the keys.

mdayrit
That is what makes using the typewriting challenging, you really need to strike hard to make the letter appear properly. If you strike it lightly, the letter will be blurred and you cannot repeat to strike back unless you move the paper holder to the right position. And if you placed it back wrong, you will have a letter on top of another letter. As a result you have to do things all over again or use a correction tape.

Wow nice of you. You must be having some fond memories which as such can serve as huge indicators of why a career in writting or blogging might be good for you. I mean if you have the typing skills, why not give it a shot?

Makes sense then for you. You should consider purchasing one and having it at your home since it is a relic. It has some great memories that you should never let go.

A typewriter was a great gadget. The keyboard we use today originated from a typewriter. Now a computer and smartphone have this type of keyboard. Lsptops hsve them too. A typewriter was a great invention.

Typewriting is no longer done in our home. Also when you go to shops, you could not see typewriters being used. Its already a thing of the past.

Clearly that no one is not using type writer anymore. What we are using now is the very popular computer which is very easy and friendly user.

Wow, that's cool and it's nice to hear that too. You know I am dreaming of using an old typewriter to have an experience with it because I like typing but, no matter how much I'd love to... old typewriters aren't available everywhere already. Although I always see one in a museum. I don't know if there's still available old typewriter to some very old libraries in some part of my country. If I'm on a travel, I'll make sure to find old libraries with old typewriters.

I have not made use of the typewriter in the past as a result of not going to a commercial school. When I take a look at how things are working out, what I see is the device being used up to this day. The reason is that over here, there are still some documents being used at school that will require you to type with a typewriter or give it to those that can do it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Here in our country, typewriter still exist not because our country is out of date. Typewriters are used in important documents that authenticity is very very crucial. Printed documents are so easy to be forged and falsificated. Unlike if your documents are typewritten, what are the odds that a home has a typewriting machine? Our school uses typewriters whenever they give our parents their copies of our grades and tuition fees. So students will not be tempted to forge or falsify documents.

I haven't touched a typewriter for more than a decade. I do have a portable manual typewriter at home but it's just sitting in the stockroom gathering dust. The word processor and spreadsheet along with the printer have taken over the functions of a typewriter. The first company I worked with used the typewriter to type details on a check and ID cards. They used an IBM electronic typewriter with a keyboard that works almost like the modern keyboard. It has a backspace that you can press to delete character(s) or words.

It is good to hear that you still have the typewriter. I wish we were able to keep it but we lost it. I think it is a good remembrance of my highschool days when computers were not yet popular. Honestly, the first time that I used a computer was during my college days.

I think that a majority of us the only place where we could have interacted or seen such a machine is in an institution. They were so preserved like in my former school and as such getting to use them was almost nwxt to impossible.

I think I was kinder 2 at that time. My father picked me up in school since my class was a halfday so when we already dismissed from class, my father used to picked me in school and brought me to his office. He asked me to type what I want to type just to enjoy myself while his working so he taught me how to use the typewriter.

I used typewriter machine way back when I was in high school. I remember that I always made a mistake typing words in the end I had lots of errors and consumed bond paper. Thanks for the modern and hi-technology, they invented computer which is much easier to use and friendly user too.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Same here, I always made a mistake when typing words and I used a lot of papers. But I remember that I also used a liquid eraser so I did not have to use new paper or repeat all the words that I have typed. It was not convenient to use.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah liquid eraser did help and since I was young that time I did not apply it properly so ending I have to change the bond paper again. Things before was a little bit harder compared today where everything is on the table. Even it was harder I was happy because I experienced things that youngsters did not.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
It was hard during our days. You had to be very careful when typing every word so you would not waste papers and time to type. But we are lucky that we got to experience this. Younger people nowadays are using computers and did not experience the difficulties that we had when we were in highschool.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mdayrit
I always make a mistake also from striking the keys so lightly letters ended on top of each other. I was able to apply liquid eraser neatly however I do not have the patience to wait for it to dry so I would start typing the letter again while it is still a bit wet. It doesn't look good and clean so I still end up changing the paper.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
I did the same thing also. It was very tiring doing that every time you made a mistake. Another annoying about using type writer is the sounds while typing in the keyboard. It was very noisy compared today typing in the laptop is better.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mdayrit
I actually like the sound of the typewriter. It takes me back to the time when my aunt brings me to her office and I would often hear that sound. I said to myself, I want to work in an office where I'll be sitting and typing like that. Unless maybe when I am sleeping and I would hear loud typing noises from a typewriter. LOL.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Good for you then. Some people might loves it but for me the sounds itself was really annoying. Most of the government agencies and offices were using typewriter way back then.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I understand. I still see some government office who are still using typewriter, mostly the legal department when there are notarial services.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes. I always made a mistake and it really pissed you of because you have to use another bond paper whenever you committed one mistake. It was not only consumed bond papers but it consumed time and effort if ever you made a mistake.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
That is right. Working in type writer was really hard. You must exerted extra effort to avoid mistakes or else you would start all over again. I cant imagine if the type writter is still existing and more people use it instead computer,I think bond paper business would become best business ever.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

edencaga
So true! Imagine working with typewriter doing your thesis thing, how was that? I think you will need extra thousands bond papers if typewriter was still existing up to now. Bond paper brands will be really sellable to market if that happens. Thanks to computer as it makes life more convenient and easy because of upgraded gadgets we have now.

I think only a few people use a typewriter. I went to our Barangay before to get a clearance and they used a typewriter to fill out some information. I guess it is still useful for some minor work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Of course, I used a typewriter when I was in highschool. It was in 2000-2004. I used this equipment to do a project. Computers were not famous at that time that is why the typewriter was the one that I used, it was also cheaper. And I think nobody uses a typewriter nowadays. We have now computers that are best for paper works.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Good for you atleast you have some good memories to live and tell a story of. When computers advance so much telling such a story to your future descendants might be hard as they may fail to believe how such things were used. The innovation rate in technology is too swift.

I haven't used a typewriter for a long time now. The last that I can remember was when I was in College where we are still being taught how to use the typewriter although computers are already existing. It was a part of a subject back then.

I hope that all students must be introduced on how to use a typewriter. It is a great thing to learn do that students nowadays could know how printed papers were made before. They should be taught how to use a typewriter because it is a great foundation for a wider knowledge on how they be resourceful even when there's a limited resources they could use.

I believe that in college it was part of the curriculum. They were teaching the proper way of handling typewriter as well as the keys and letters in the keyboard.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes it was part of the curriculum before, not really sure if until now it is still being taught. Once you have experienced using the typewriter, you'll find that using the keyboard is very simple and easy. No need to strike hard on each key and deleting mistakes is just one press of the delete button.

I dont think the schools still teaching about the type writer. What they are teaching now is all about the computer. We are in the modern and hi-technology and for sure some schools decided to remove that in the curriculum to give way for the computer subject.

As far as I could remember, the last time that I had used a typewriter is when I was still in gradeschool. I could still remember how cool it was to use a typewriter. Although nowadays it is very rare to see one using a typewriter for a document, I still think that it is a fast and convenient way to print out a certain writing. It was like you're typing into a paper and printing it on the same time but you should refrain from any mistakes because it is hard to delete your mistakes.

I got employed in 1982 and our office has an electric typewriter that I use once in a while when the office secretary is not around. I had my own typewriter when I was still in school. Maybe that helped me to be good in typing. Perhaps I can say that my last use of a typewriter was in our office sometime in 1983 or 1984. Gee, that's a pretty long time already. But now I don't think those electric typewriters still exist in offices.

Way back in college, around 2001. I submitted homework, and it was passed along to the front of the class, someone noticed it was typewritten and laughed while saying "oh, wow! Typewriter!" Then another laugh. I was embarrassed at the time, so I immediately asked my father to buy me a computer with a printer. Glad he obliged. LOL.

It was at least 10 years ago when I last used a typewriter. It was my dad's and he used it in University when he studied. I played with it and I think I've used up its ink. It was the first time I've used a keyboard layout like it and I was confused as to why the letters aren't arranged alphabetically.

“…I was confused as to why the letters aren't arranged alphabetically.”

Ha, you just knocked loose a memory I had from High School. Back when I was in school, it was required for us to take a typing class, since all of our papers would be typed and printed from that point forward.

My family hadn’t bought a computer until that year, so I didn’t really have any experience with keyboards, so I was weirded out by the whole QWERTY format. Little did I know about the science that went into designing the keyboards we all know and love these days.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

EfficientNinja
Yup. I just got used to the QWERTY format keyboard and I already forgot about its history. I just noticed that it has the same keyboard layout when I first typed on a computer keyboard in our computer class too.

Oh man, I think that I’ve only ever used a typewriter once in my life. I was probably something like eight years old at the time.

I was going home from school and visited a building where my mom worked. The secretary there had her own office, and in her office was a typewriter. It was the 90’s so electric typewriters were still a thing at that point. I was fascinated by it so the secretary let me type away a bit until my mom got off work.

I still remember the clicking sensation, and it makes me want to buy a mechanical keyboard.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
There’s something rather relaxing about that clicking sensation, right? Oddly enough whenever I buy a new laptop one of the first things I check is the keyboard and how it feels when I type on it. I like a certain level of feedback when I press keys and it may be inspired from typewriters way back when!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Yeah, it’s exactly why mechanical keyboards exist to begin with! Not only is the clicking sound relaxing but the tactile feedback you get from the keyboard makes it feel like the keyboard is somehow an extension of your own body.

Speaking of the clicking noise, they actually have ASMR videos on YouTube of people typing on mechanical keyboards, so it seems like we’re not just two crazy people who love the sound of keyboards. A lot of people even fall asleep to the sound of typing, and I totally understand why.

What a nostalgic question. But for my answer it would be ages ago. And the last time I used a typewriter it was the automatic one already. Not the mechanical type. But the old typewriter are the one I miss especially its sounds whenever you hit its keyboard.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's good that you were able to use the automatic. What I used before was the manual and I was also the one who had to change the ribbon that served as the ink. It was hard to use but I also miss the old typewriter. The noisy sounds every time you hit the keyboard that is why you need to use this inside your own room so you won't disturb the other people in your house.

It must be over ten years since I used a typewriter. It had no letter o and I used c as an o. It was tough typing. I used one finger to do the typing. Sometimes I hit the buttons too hard that they cut through the paper.

Your experience is almost the same as mine when I was learning to use typewriters for any typing purposes. I had to learn how to fix the paper in the roller for more than 3 hour as I was pretty slow with learning how to use it.One thing I loved about using typewriters is the sound it makes when the carriage reaches the end side of paper when typing. The ribbon makes the typing to be very dark and clear.

I only judge that time because I think I moved to El Paso, Texas in 1995 and I don't remember using a typewriter from that time period forward. I moved to El Paso from Maryland. I definitely remember owning and using a typewriter when I lived in Maryland.

A typewriter? Yes I heard you correct right? Wow, everything just started to flashback to me on how hard to borrow this metal thing before. I used to go friends, neighbors and family friends but they just won't let me borrow it for a day. It's so precious for them that it won't let you have it so easy hehe. We used to have this but my father left it to our old house and never had a chance to get the stuff again. My dad was the last person who helped with my term paper project., Same thing they don't want me to touch it for reason that the ribbon was expensive that time(the ink ribbon I guess)and they don't want me to waste it. I just can't for get that. LOL

I think typewriters can now be considered as relics nowadays which are better stored for memories rather than one having to use them either commercially or for personal reasons. You can also type a little if you want to get to experience how they used to do it but only as a test.

I never learnt how to use a type writer. However the last time I saw one was 20 years ago. I would be curious to know if people still use them. The only place I have seen them in my Country is in government offices. That's why they are always looking for people who can type on them and have retained many of their staff even past retirement age. I don't think makes sense to still be using one especially because it can't really type different fonts.

I wrote an entire thesis on a typewriter. That would have been 1974. Then I know I bought a Remington. It seemed like the most advanced bit of equipment I ever owned. It was in use when my daughter was born in 1984. By 1987 I was doing a postgraduate degree and learned that computers and the Internet existed. Excited, my love relationship with the iMac began. So the Remington typewriter gathered dust for years from 1986 as I know we had the iMac when my son was born. I kept it for years and at some point gave it to a friend, seriously wondering why she would want it. Now let me see, where were we living? When did the thing finally leave my home? Our kids were at school, so I would guess I last touched one somewhere in about 1990. 18 years ago, if my Maths is correct.

That and the sound when you load paper in and the sound it makes when you have to push it back to the left side to start typing a new line. Maybe that's what is lacking in the modern age. Feedback from the tools you are using. That's why I prefer a mechanical keyboard for the sound it makes.

The last time that I have used a typewriter was on 2001. I was in first year high school then. The school requires many assignment that should be submitted typewritten or printed. During that time, the only way I could make an assignment and print it in a printer is to rent through a computer shop. Prints are expensive during that time and rent for computer is also pricey. You will charged based on your time.
During that time, it is not practical to go to a computer shop if you have a typewriter in your home. We have a typewriter and I found it therapeutic to make my assignments in that machine.
Nowadays, we restored our typewriting machine so that we can display it in our house. It has a nice rustic feel.

I remembered too from my sister's friends, they had this high tech typewriter, instead of manual doing it like the common thing you type it then its written on the paper right away, their machine was kinda different. First you do the writing and all that, you can see on the black and white screen all the things she is writing so she still have the option to edit it, once its done then it will be written on the different machine all she wrote., it looks like a printer but its not. because the fonts are still just like from the common typewriter. Their were rich family that time and they were the only one who had that on our place.

I really love the sound of typewriters, especially if I am the one who's using it. However, the last time I used a typewriter was back in my college years and that was in 2012. I had a chance to use the one in my mother's office, so I could type my name on my notebooks. Typewriters can be very helpful especially when you don't have enough time to print and cut something you've printed.

Though printers are much helpful than typewriters, I still can't help but miss the latter because it screams old tradition.

Yes I have used a typewriter long time back when I was in the school. Typewriter are still used in some countries , mostly to do some clerical and court related jobs like typing letters and affidavits. I still remember how difficult it was initially to locate the buttons and type correctly on the typewriter. But learning to type on a typewriter made it very easy to use a keyboard on my desktop and laptop afterwards. The constant sound that a typewriter makes while typing always used to irritate me.

Many people still use typewriters, which include me, so I might say it’s safe to assume that typewriters are not pretty out of date. For decades, the big apple city police department used many typewriters for filling out forms. But, a few years ago, the metropolis determined that an excessive amount of cash changed into being spent on typewriters, and advized the police branch to digitize the rest of their paperwork.Additionally, small corporations and scientific practitioners maintain to use these machines for receipts and paperwork as nicely, instructors in typing classes, and authors.

I never got the chance to learn typing in the typwriter at school. But I did learn it from my mom's office. I was self-taught, so ofcourse I started by typing one letter per one heavy press. haha. that's why I can't help but press heavily even when I'm using the computer keyboard now. Thinking about typewriters a bit nostalgic. There is a certain appeal the way the keys would make the machine hit and imprint your thoughts on a blank piece of paper. I remember being convinced that the harder I press, the clearer the letters. I end up then with holes through the paper in small e's and a's.

I had a chance to used a type writer when i was in my high school days I think. All I remember was it so hard to erase when you mistakenly type letters. You need to use white liquid eraser and dry it first before you type again. When your done filling up the first line, you have to roll up the roller to go to the next line. It took me an hour to finish a one page. I am very thankful that nowadays it is easy for us to write and delete mistakes.

To be honest, I have never used a typewriter. The closest I have ever come across a typewriter was back in high school, and the secretary was so cruel. You don't mess around her, else you will face the music.

Typewriters must have contributed much into the keyboards we have now. Though we found it tough to type during those times but they taught us how to type on computers, laptops, and smartphones

But,I totally agree with the above statement.

I am thankful of typewriters because I was able to use one during my high school and early College years. The use of it made my research papers presentable and neat although I used extra effort while typing because the keys are hard to press and produce annoying sounds. This was so 25 years ago.

The clanking sound of the metals, my favorite spacebar key, the smell of the ribbon, and the "ding" sound before the paper's line ends. Those were the things I remember most in using a typewriter. My father bought one for us, just when computers are starting to be a thing. But we still used it for years, because personal computers were sooo expensive back in the day. But our typewriter was the advanced type, the ribbon had two colors, so font colors were present back then, but just two, black and red. You just have to kind of shift it then it will change colors. It also has a backspace and tab key, which most typewriters don't have, I guess. At least, you didn't have to worry about printing your work since you are already printing it while writing it. No surprises today, like the printer not working, or having no ink.

I have one just sitting in the corner of my living room. The last time I used it was about 2 years from now. And I've loved it, but i find it easier to tipe on my computer or just to write it down old fashion way - paper and pen.
