How do you deal with writing frustration?

From my writing experience, I'm very certain that 80% of all writers have faced this situation of getting frustrated with a particular content or article writing. Some might even have to suspend completing the writing.

For those that have experienced this problem, how do you deal with it?

Writing can be super frustrating especially when you are on a deadline. The thing that frustrates me most is when I have to read through acres and acres of content to get talking points for my article. Normally the best way to deal with frustration when you are writing is just to push through it.There is not short cut in life just write on and your frustrations will sort themselves out. Its just never that serious.

I have no frustration in writing yet. As of today I love to write. Most especially when I will write something about my experience with God.

I like what you said over there that in many instances you just need to push through it and get the work done. Sometimes what you may classify as frustration could just be laziness and you have to overcome it.

Personally, I don't work well under pressure especially when my work is a writing job. It drags my brain waves erratic which makes me lose focus and concentration.

I think I have to give up some work I believe that is going to be very hard for me to meet the deadline, as I wouldn't want to be put under pressure to meet up.

I cannot write if I feel frustrated. Many things will come out from my mind, more on negative things which I don't want to be part on my article. It can be cause from the family, from work, unexpected situation - so many things that can frustrate us and ruin our day just like that. But I make sure It will never ruin my whole day. What I do, I prepare my hot cup of coffee, spray some lavender scent around the house and play my jazz music playlist and these can start my day again much better.

Doing something fun is another thing to focus on. I have noticed that when I am not in the good mood to write, that it is better to relax and do it later instead of having to continue at that time which may result to making mistakes at the end.

Coffee is often how I battle frustration in writing too. Oftentimes my frustration comes from being tired and not being able to easily find the words I need. Coffee definitely helps to alleviate that!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. Coffee drinking is one of the ways to battle frustration in writing. It keeps you from being tired.

Exactly the same way I feel with trying to get my writing done under frustration. It never goes well for both myself and my writing because I will definitely end up making a mess of the entire writing.

Taking a little bit of time off is the best way to deal and get through such feeling of frustration and get back to complete my work with good quality output.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. I also cannot write when I am frustrated. I need first to go back to normal and positive thinking.

I have discussed an article that I was writing with people around me especially those that are into writing so as to get some suggestions from them. The thing is that you are going to have some ideas of how to start by talking with others. It is never easy to a writer and the best thing to do on that is to relax and make it a discussion with others as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
This is a very good suggestion you just made now. Frustration can come in many ways and lacking potential points to use and complete your article might pose a problem.

Getting to try and discuss this with some people who can offer you good suggestions on how to move forward will definitely help you finish the writing.

Yes ,with whatever little experience I have in this field I can say that everyone does get frustrated sometimes when you are writing about something and you are just not satisfied with whatever you are writing. At such times you do get frustrated and start questioning your ability to write. In such a situation the more you try to push yourself to write something the more you add to your frustration

I guess that if there is no time constraint then it is better to stop writing immediately at that time and engage yourself in something else . If however you do have a time constraint then also it's better to take a short break and try to meditate a little or do something which will calm your mind. After that you can resume your work hopefully with a less agitated mind.

Exactly! Diminishing returns happens to most people or should I say writer's block if I'm to choose freelance terms, and when this writer's block takes place, frustration is bound to kick in for not being able to pull off your job.

The best way to get past this situation at hand would be to take a break

I usually take a break from writing every time I feel stuck or ran out of words to say. Eat chocolate, drink coffee, smoke (bad for your health), or read or watch something weird and different - these are the things I do to deal with writing frustrations.

I like the idea of eating chocolate or drinking coffee. Aside from reading or watching videos, these things can be helpful. Frustration can give you a lot of stress and eating chocolate especially the dark one can reduce your stress. Eating chocolate can also make you happy which is good to ease your frustration. In this way, you can start again of creating good articles.

I've read an article before that suggests eating chocolate may be the key to a successful career. It says that consumption of chocolate regularly had a definite effect on intellectual abilities over a long time.

I also read a similar article. A team of researchers in Rome discovered that there is a clear link between ingestion of a pure element (cocoa flavonoids) found in chocolate and cocoa that it improves cognitive brain function, especially the dark chocolate. Reading this article makes me want to eat more dark chocolate.

"....... Eat chocolate, drink coffee, smoke (bad for your health), or read or watch something weird and different..."

Your collection is quite interesting. I'm sure that doing any of these things will definitely get you some breather and rest to your brain to hibernate and come back better to continue with your writing and most likely complete it.

Yes, it does. I don't recommend smoking though, but it somehow eases my mind and releases frustrations I have if ever I do get stuck on a particular idea. It also has a calming effect on me, makes me become focused again regarding tasks I have at the moment.

That's exactly what I'm doing whenever my mind is tired and I can't really think of anything, I would drop my tablet or smartphone and just relax, forget about writing and just sleep, nap, eat whatever I'm craving for, go for a stroll, or for a drink.

I got frustrated before when good ideas won't come into my mind that could make my story good. I thought to myself that I can't even write so I better stop it. I felt that before maybe because of my problems I've been dealing with and it affects me a lot. So I took a vacation out of town, and relaxed myself. Finding what I really wanted to do. Then one night, I caught myself writing and formulating a story within my head. Then I realized, this is what I really wanted to do. I just don't have to pressure myself and just take everything easy and slowly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's never a good thing to force one's self into writing when you are absolutely sure that you aren't in the right frame of mind nor good mood to successfully complete the article writing.

It would serve everyone well if you were to take a break and cool off, then get back normal with your thoughts and bearing to write something with high quality.

In times like that, what I do is to drop my pen, so to speak, and do some other things. I remember during my college days that I would be writing a report for the class that I would notice when I was in the middle of the work that the report was not good enough. I would scrap the paper and walk outside to feel the air and to talk to people. If there is more time I would start writing again on the next day otherwise I would have to go back to my writing table after an hour or so.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

One of the best ways to to handle this cog in the wheel of writing called frustration would be to take a long walk, take fresh air and then clear your mind.

Doing this works perfectly for me anytime I feel like I'm chooking with trying to get my writing done. Once I get back from my walk, I will feel really refreshed.

When really frustrated with what I am writing, I try to leave it alone for a while. Things always seem better after a break. I generally have more than one project on the go, so I work on one of these.

The writing process isn’t always fun and enchanting. Sometimes, you want to give up and stop writing. But remember that there are ways to overcome your frustration. My frustration will depend on my mood. I fail to write something when nothings come to my mind. I learned that what I had to do was to relax and have fun. Take a break and enrich yourself by watching and reading a lot of articles.

I agree. There will be times where everything seems lile a mess. That you can't even write a good sentence for your content. But you know yourself, you must know how to vent yourself out to give yourself a space to think and relieve stress. I agree that taking a break and having fun is really effective to go away from frustration.

Time out is very good especially for when you are the type that stays too long for hours with eyes fixated on the computer screen or laptop screen 24/7.

When the frustration get to the boiling point, it would really do the writer some good to take some time off and calm down his eyes and brain.

I think I cannot write an article if I am frustrated since I am not in a mood to do it, maybe I will just let the frustration go away first before I can continue with the article that I am working because writing an article needs some focus and concentration. We cannot make it a great article if we feel some frustration along the way. We should have a peace of mid in doing it in order for it to be great.

Sometimes we use our frustrations as an excuse. There’s a high-quality line among frustration and procrastination. due to the fact we’re all human we will be inclined to let matters get to us. we try to be perfect, however when we recognize writing is an imperfect art at satisfactory it could leave us feeling a piece irritated. so we use that frustration as an excuse to keep away from what’s vital to make our desires a reality. frustration isn’t solved by wallowing in those emotions or refusing to write down till you experience stimulated.

Writing can be frustrating when you don't like what your writing. I mean if you're not really interested on a certain topic then it's best not to write about it, or else you'll risk being disappointed or frustrated.

I agree. However, when you're employed as a writer or someone who writes for a living, there would be times wherein you'll be asked to write about something that you have utterly no knowledge or background of some kind whatsoever. That's where frustrations come in.

I definitely agree with you. If a topic is not that interesting then you may not have any ideas to share. You need to write about the topics that interest you. Usually I just try and take a break - and often that can be literally getting away from the computer itself. Getting out and going for a walk, or catching up with a friend for a coffee can be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to feeling refreshed and ready to tackle my writing again.

It gets frustrating when you've been sitting in front of the computer thinking but cannot even start writing and you have a deadline to meet. Only yesterday I was frustrated by an article I was writing in bitlanders. The topic was about OMAD, the one meal a day diet. Often I do not write down a draft before writing and publishing. I just research and write. After completing the 2,000 blog and putring the appropriate images, the blog just deleted itself snd left me 560 words. I had not saved it.

I got frustrated very much. I might print a less number of words.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Gee, that can surely kill your motivation and lose your momentum. It's good if you were able to continue writing again considering that more than half of what you had written were erased. That has happened to me before and I had learned my lesson to always click on the save icon when you have written a paragraph or 2. That habit would save you from losing what you had written especially if it is already a long one.

Old geezers do not learn new tricks easily. I might make the same mistake again.

I usually write things in Google Docs for that very reason, because it auto saves and I don't need to worry about losing a great deal of writing. Yes, most writers had faced that situation or writing problem already. But what I do usually is taking a break, because if we force ourselves the result might get even worse than what we expect and that will probably get you more even frustrated as well. So taking a break is advisable, or sometimes I read other articles or any reading materials that might help me out in my problem. Staying calm when you write is very important, and make enough time when you start writing and that's when you do proper time management so you wouldn't get yourself too pressured.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I don't write about topics which I'm not confident with because it's stressful and I don't want to be stressed out or to be disappointed nor frustrated on the finished article. But there are still times when I still feel frustrated on an article I've submitted because I feel that I could have written much much more. Sometimes I do forget some valuable material that could've made my article better and when this happens a lot, I know that it's time to rest and reboot my mind a bit.

Writing frustrations affect writers psychologically, thus, hindering them to continue what they've started or it may cause the decrease of the written output's quality. I don't always deal with writing frustration, but, whenever I do, I stop and sit or lie on my bed, and let my mind be drifted somewhere by my thoughts. Whenever I have that time, I always imagine different things, from simple to impossible. That's my way of relaxing my mind. Surprisingly, it really helps me gain the energy and willpower to continue what I have written.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

We should not use our frustrations as an excuse, always remember that possibilities are endless. As long as we will keep on trying and learning, our goal to create amazing content is achievable. Nothing comes easy and everyone goes through frustration but the option to overcome is ours.

It's true that we shouldn't make an excuse always for our frustration in writing but you should take into consideration that we are humans and not robots. So, there will always be a down time for some people when it hits them hard.

In such situations, making excuses for one's self wouldn't solve the problem but to try one's best in getting right back on track to complete the writing should be the priority.

It's not that hard to deal with writing frustration when you are working for a client whose expectations are unrealistic. I've had to work with a few in the past and they were not congenial projects I must confess. The way I dealt with them was by informing the client that I couldn't do what they demanded. Of course that terminated the jobs and the relationships that existed. Not that a huge a loss.

In my opinion, there is no need to stress yourself up over anything. Unless it is really important that you complete the writing project at that time, it's best to take a break - a long one if necessary - and come back to it later.

A Writer can be frustrated by a lot of things. It could be environmental or external related in which the writing environment may not be conducive or there are external things which the writer has no control on which affects his writing. It could also be Internal or Psychological, in which the writer is beset by problems and other things that makes it hard for him to concentrate, think and write. What I always do to avoid writing frustration is that I don't write whenever the atmosphere is not conducive to me and if I feel that I need to finish some important things first. Doing this would eliminate pressure and stress.

One of the most common factor that affects me most in writing which gets me more than frustrated but broken as well is psychological and emotional problems.

This is why I always try to keep my emotions in check as much as possible in order to reduce the chances of getting caught up and lose myself in writing. It's never a good sight for me when I'm battling with emotional and psychological problems.

Whenever I'm writing for a blog, or a research paper, frustrations sure come when my deadline is near. The problem is these frustrations won't go away until I am finished with the project. I can't even take a break since they are not my personal projects but a clients order, so I must deliver on time to get paid. So what I do is I use the pressure to push me to my limits; And when I'm done, I take all my scratches, my rejected transcripts, my discarded notes, etc. relating to that project, and burn them out in the backyard while I sip my coffee. I watch them burn to ashes, satisfied.

Dealing with this frustration, I sometimes pause first an relax my mind until new ideas comes out. you don't have to push yourself to do it as quick as that. You need to have inspiration, you can get from your surroundings. Try to go to places where you can see a lot of trees and flowers, birds and butterflies. Nature is a good therapeutic medicine, Scientifically trees releases oxygen, and that oxygen is the major air that we need to breath to function our brain cells well. Our brain will restart and certainly brings new ideas.

Do other activities where you can find an inspiration. Listen to music, spend time with other people, read books, play games, travel. You don't have to pressure yourself. Allow you mind to wander and find its way for you to continue your writing. Whenever I feel frustrated, I stop and listen to music, watch films, or talk with my loved ones. In that way, my mind gets the rest it needs and ideas would just naturally come for me to continue writing. I don't even notice anymore that I got frustrated, haha. Writing in frustration actually helps the writer become more expressive in his/her writing.
