How did you start writing for a living?

Since we are on WordClerks and this website is about writing I am going to assume that everyone here writes... either themselves for a living, or purchases writing services and then makes a living.

So how did you get into writing for a living?

Ok so I'll go first...

I started working online by starting an online store. When I learned about SEO and how to get my website ranking I found out that adding a blog to my store would really help with traffic.

So I started blogging as a way to build up my online store and I fell in love with it. I then started another 2 blogs on the side and in February this year I closed my online store but kept my first blog. So I started blogging full time.

I have since added writing eBooks to my income.

Now your turn! How did you get started writing for a living?

Well, I don't write for a living. I do write and I write tons of things on a regular basis and even if I get paid for most of the things I write, I still don't do that for a living. - I would love too though, but I can't really come up with "the perfect service".

That being said, my main business is brand building, okay. I do write for a living as my brand building is all about writing stuff. However, I don't see it like that. When I think of "writing for a living" I think of articles and blog posts mainly. What I do is different which is why I can't see it like that. Anyhow, I would love to write even more but as I'm not native in English it's actually something I've never really bothered with. It feels like there's always going to be thousands of other people doing what I do better than me, so potential buyers would obviously prefer to work with them instead. - That's why I've never really offered article services etc.

You most certainly do write for a living Andre! You wrote an eBook and sold it. Plus when you do brand building that involves a lot of writing.

I agree with you that what you do is a lot more than writing but even blogging involves a lot more than just writing.

That's a very great point Lynne! - Perhaps I'll need to start considering myself as a writer and not a "writer" after this. I mean, I know what I do and I know that it involves writing, but the major thing here is that I'm not native in English. It just doesn't feel right to compare myself to other writers who is native, as most of them are way better in terms of grammar for instance.

I wouldn't think that your native language is the deciding factor of whether you can be a writer or not. In fact you are most likely much more skilled than me, I can only imagine how hard it must be to write in another language! I greatly respect the hard work and dedication that you have put in Andre.

Thank you for your kind words Lynne. I do try my best and I decided to do that the first day I set my foot in "online business". That said, I would and could call myself a writer in Swedish judging by the things I recently said, and that's actually not accurate at all. I do understand that I might have been to focused on the language, but on the other hand, I mostly freelance in English. So it has become my nature so to speak.

I started off about 8 years ago. I was trying to find a good way to earn some extra income online since I had to quit my job for various reasons. I searched and searched and there was an advert where someone was hiring writers. I gave it a go, and worked there for about a year, and then they said that they did not need any more writing services and I wanted to find something so as to keep doing this as it was something that I had started to enjoy. Eventually I joined various sites, and then 2 years ago I landed on Seoclerks and it is where I found most clients for my writing services.

How wonderful that you were able to find that first writing job that could open your mind up to the possibility of writing freelance and making an income.

I love the way that freelancing and writing particular leaves me so free! It is amazing.

I write for extra income while I do my business. I started doing it when I was asked to write an article about spinning tops. I came up with an article talking about its history and the differences between the ancient and modern spinning tops. Later on, I discovered a few sites where I can earn thru forum posting, still about writing. I can either do article writing or forum writing. It's fun for me because I get to earn extra income while I enhance my English skills and share the things I learned from my business when I write. It's a win-win situation for me.

I always have that passion to write and have been writing since I was a kid. So, when I got the opportunity to start to writing for blogs and getting paid, I had no other option than to jump at it. Now, I am planning on getting a blog that I can learn from as well.

Started up a horror film and movie website. Writing was part of the job since I chose to cover horror events, projects, news, reviews, and do interviews as well. Once that was set up - it was all about improving my skills, getting better, and creating more quality content.

I was invited by a blogger to submit articles for a pet blog. At first, I thought the contribution was just once but later on I was named a co-blogger. And I assumed that my articles were a good read. After some months of writing, I was surprised to receive money as my share of the profit. Oh yeah? So I am now a paid writer huh. And the feeling is great because I didn’t really expect to be paid since I am not a professional writer. That thought still lingers and that’s what motivates me to continue writing

I also started writing when a friend blogger asked me to develop a site for him which he later entrusted to me. It was a Lifestyle and Events Site which actually did good for about 4 years but due to my profession I had to take time off 2 years ago and ever since I haven't posted again on that site. I developed 2 more sites after that which are movie and anime related sites which I'm currently active in.
