Writing Hack - Making use of a thesaurus!

How often do you repeat the same words in your writing? There are only so many times you can call something amazing before it becomes repetitive and boring.

Making use of a thesaurus to look up a synonym for a word that you use a lot is a great way to make your writing more colourful and interesting for your readers.

If you are writing content for a website then making use of a thesaurus not only keeps your writing fresh but it is also an opportunity to rank for additional keywords.

Why not take your main keywords and check for synonyms? Chances are good that people will use different variations of keywords for a topic. The new Google updates are making it easier for content creators to rank more for a specific topic and set of related keywords than the way it used to be when you had to rank for specific keywords.

That is a good tip Lynne. I love using synonyms. Sometimes you get an order for several articles based on the same topic or subject. Chances are that as you write you tend to repeat yourself, sometimes even without knowing. So, to avoid repeating the same word over and over again, the use of synonyms with a thesaurus is very helpful and effective. The English language is very rich in this regard. There are several words that you can use which mean the same thing, and that is one of the beauties of a language, and of writing in my opinion.

I couldn't agree with you more, I think English has the largest vocabulary out of all the languages making it the best language for writers, plus is one of the most universal languages. I believe Chinese and Spanish have the most speakers worldwide but I think as a universal language English is probably the most widely spoken if that makes sense?

Wow! I must say that I'm guilty of repeating words in the things I write and in as much as thesaurus comes handy on my laptop, I have not really thought about making use of it. This is a great way to start using it to improve my writings. Thank you for the advice.

Very good point by the OP. Every writer should become very friendly with the thesaurus when starting out. Program as many words into your head as possible so when you're writing articles or editorials - you don't sound repetitive and dry.

I agree with you on the need for writers to be able to make use of different type of words when we write. This is a good way to prove that we've known lots of things as we develop. I am someone that used to have doubts on the need to use series of similar words while writing, but some events have made me realize that we have to expand our vocabulary and one sure way of doing so is by making use of the thesaurus.

This is my weakness – I have a small vocabulary that sometimes I am at a loss for words. Yes, the Thesaurus is one great invention for people like me but I couldn’t consult it every time I write. What I do now is to write the draft in my natural way and then re-read it for possible enhancement of words and phrases. At least that is the easiest way for me because it’s difficult to be thinking of synonyms while thinking of what I am to write.

This is a wide tip. I have to admit that I have been using the thesaurus for quite some time now. Sometimes I find myself using the same words in the same paragraphs. In such cases, the thesaurus becomes helpful. The thesaurus has undoubtedly helped me to learn many new words. This is a very important tool for me.

Great hack. It's annoying when you're writing and you have to keep repeating the same phrase or word,It becomes especially difficult in terms of sentence structure when you can't shorten it or refer to it as it, she, he e.t.c or the sentence may not make sense. Using a thesaurus is a good idea, especially if the words are written in simple English. One of the rules of writing is, you should use plain English or English that the common man can understand.

Being able to make use of variety of vocabularies when we write is the best way to become perfect and better. Many people will always feel tired when they notice that we are making use of the same type of words in the things that we write. This is where the we need to adjust and find synonyms when we write.

I agree on this. Using thesaurus is really helpful when it comes to content writing. I think that there are people/readers that are usually encouraged to read whenever they see new words. These may leave them interested and make them read the article itself. Thesaurus can also be helpful in improving our vocabulary and grammar skills. In that way, we are able to write more fresh and interesting words that may leave the people wonder and wanted to read the content. Just make sure to avoid using too much flowery words though because it may not sell at all because it may seem/sound complicated

Ages ago when I was just starting to write, I always have to things beside me, a pocket dictionary and a thesaurus. This was in the pre smartphone days, now I only need my smartphone and I can use and access both the dictionary and thesaurus.
