There are a number of things that will often be in demand because they excite people. Money and love.

Write about these two and there'll be a market for your ebook. However, the topics are too broad for one to write an ebook about. You'll need to go a level lower. Find something within the broader topic that will grab the attention of your target audience. If it's money, will you write about how one can earn more? If it's love and romance, would it be about infusing an existing relationship with some of the passion of yore?

I think the best topic for an ebook should be based on the people's need. Demands are always based on the needs. A good and top grossing ebooks are those that provides solution to problems. This is like asking for the niche of a website or a blog. Writing an e-book is like having your own blog and the topic or the niche should be close to your heart. I have come across many discussions about ideas for blogging or writing e-books and my usual reply is the passion. Think of your passions that you can use as the topic of the e-book. Never create an e-book with a topic that you are not well-versed with. The first problem is the factual errors that you may commit since you are depending only on your research. Second problem is the loss of interest that you will get bored and just come up with a mediocre e-book.

My guess is the title of the ebook will be a variation on "How to Make Money Online." However, having just written that, my researches turned up this article. It looks like fiction ebooks have better sales. It is time to write a suspense or literary fiction novel and make my fortune. Rodeo talks seem to be the poorest category for sales which makes sense as who on earth might want to read about them anyway? The article confirmed a suspicion that print books still hold a place in the market despite many bookshops closing down, so it is worth making your print as well as the eBook version of your book. The comments about Indie books (where you do the whole process and format and make the cover yourself,) are comforting. Whether we use Createspace, Lulu, Smashwords, Ingram Spark or another company, to be the creative director of your entire work is a viable option. To get sold is not how well you write these days, but how well you market your book. Now, where is that mystery book I jotted down? it needs and airing. If there is one thing I am learning from the Clerks site, is that I need to learn SEO and marketing and my antipathy to these may well be why I get low sales. If you can get the marketing right, your genre whatever it is should sell and this is a different thing from targetting the most popular genre.
