I used to write poetry and my readers always noticed that I played with words well. I always add a touch of metaphors and personifications in my piece. But right now, since I am writing news article, I make sure that my words are clear and not misleading.

I agree with you. In writing news article, words must be clear and precise. You can play with words in poetry.

When it comes to poetry and poems writing, I'm very sure that you are well aware about poetic license which gives poets the right to use words as they please in writing their poems. So, on this note, I wouldn't question any poet for playing with words when writing their poems.

But for any other form of writing or articles, in my opinion, it's better to go straight to the point.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
Yes, because unlike poetry readers, people who reads articles aim for clarity and not a hidden answer to a riddle.

I think in poetry word playing is constant and is easily noticed by the readers and they may not see anything wrong with it but in article I don't think it's nice, just go straight to the point.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
yes, indeed. Article writing and poem writing is two different things and world play might be good with poetry but in article it is better to lay all the facts out and skip the world plays.

I think so also. They are playing words there so that the writers would not bore their readers. It is actually a clever move from the writers.

As for me, I don't play with words in writing. I want my writings to be short and simple. I don't want to go around the bush. I want to be straight to the point.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

emiaj55
I found that writing short and simple won't always be applicable especially if you are writing fictional-fantasy plays. Short sentences just seem dry. I think it is best suited if you are writing the news or any instructional materials.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Well, to an extent, it is not always cool to play with words when you are making contents for news. The reason is so that your audience can get to understand what you are saying and not the other way round.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
That is right. You have to consider all the time your readers because they are the one who is supporting your articles. There is nothing wrong in playing words as long as your readers understand it.

If playing with words is going to make me go off topic with my writing, I wouldn't be comfortable doing it because it's only going to render my article boring and of low quality.

It's good to keep one's writing as simple and concise as possible because it's the only way to make your readers happy reading it.

I agree with you, world plays are ok but it depend on what kind of article you are writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yea, keeping your work simple is the best way to make a good write up and keep your readers engaged but anything other than that is not a wise choice but a way to bore your readers with unnecessary things to read.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
It depends on what you are writing sometimes. But it is important that you are comfortable and contended with the outcome of your work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't really support those that try to go off point when they are writing. I believe that you can decide on focusing on some words and then getting back to what you are writing within minutes so as not to fall into the trap of saying things that do not matter.

Most of the time, I do. I usually fiddle with my choice of words and pick the word which I think is best suited. I also think of other words that I can use to substitute some words that are similiar in meaning to avoid using the same word. I also want my works to be direct to the point as much as possible so I always narrow down my words. There are also times that I fiddle with my writing style and therefore I play with my words as a result.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
I agree with you, I hate repeating words over and over again, so I try to substitute it to make my piece or article better.

Using synonyms can be cool as it is going to make some of your readers to see how good you are when it comes to doing the things that will really affect the way that you write. Playing with words can be okay as long as you are still in the same line of what you are writing.

When I am in the mood to write there's always the humorous part that you can find on my articles. But that's usually when the topic is light. But for serious subject matter like ordinances pertaining to the dogs as my niche then it's not appropriate to use humor even a little bit. It's nice to be writing with joviality that I know can infect the readers. That kind of craft belongs to great writers that we admire for their skills in the use of words for the situation.

Yeah, some great writers are fond of playing with words. I enjoy reading sports news especially football news a lot and I can say that a whole lot of the writers always find a way to make things look funny especially when they are making contents on some light topics as well.

I did play a lot with words the time I was asked to write for a yearbook. The description of their traits were to be presented as poems so I had to elaborate with a lot of words. It was a challenge because I did not know them personally. I had to do some research by asking people who knew them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Wow! That was a great thing to do. I think that playing with words is always something that is nice to do when you are writing poems as your readers will always want lines that will make them to think deeper about what you are writing on.

I think it is use of words rather than play with words when one is writing articles for public consumption. Words used is important as it can determines the clarity of a story. One cannot avoid choosing appropriate words in different article for different target audience. For example, it requires more technical words and languages when writing peer reviewed academic papers but those jargons and scientific terms are not appropriate if one is writing a light mood story books.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Yeah, I helped someone fee months ago compile a story book and the instructions were clear which is that I should make use of words as I want. That has really made me understand that most stories are written with some words that will make you think deeper as well.

You mean play with words like doing it in a poetic way? Well, it depends on your choice of words. If you don't want to express the message directly then it is up to you. Personally, I don't mind reading works with idiomatic expressions but it'd be better if we write simple and easily comprehensible. I only get into playing with words when I need to but, most of the time I choose simpler words.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
I think that the modern writers don't actually like to make use of idioms when they write. This is because they don't always to sound confusing to those writers who they are expecting to read their articles as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

When writing articles the topic being covered decides how that article will be written. What do the readers want? My goal will be to give them precisely what they seek.

When writing fiction I have all the freedom that I need to do whatever I please because there will be characters who use language one way and others who use it a different way. So it is relatively easy to switch between flippancy, using a serious tone and so on.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

When making contents that is based on drama and storyline, I think that it is cool to play with words. You are always going to have that freedom to do this since you always want to add spice to your writings.

I'm not good at playing with words when writing, but I could say it's an effective method to capture the readers' heart. As for me, I love to read literary works with metaphors that aren't stated straight forward. I love reading between the lines, and I'm pretty sure a lot of us do. Playing with words in compositions is a big plus, and it turns an ordinary thought into a masterpiece.

Not every reader love it when they read a content where they read a content and the write just play with words, some sees it as a boring article while some may love it others will not but it's best to make your write up simple as possible for readers to comprehend easily.

Yes, you need to make your article plain and simple, so people can easily understand it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The best way to capture the heart of most readers is to keep your work as simple and plain as possible, you don't have to write the whole page to send your message. So readers no longer spend time on post because they are more things to do on the internet.

It usually depends on the kind of writing I’m doing. For the most part I prefer informal writing too, where I can simply feel relaxed and let the words flow onto a page.

I tend to play with words more when it comes to formal writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Well, it depends on what type of formal writing simply because there are a group of people that you may be writing to and it requires you to remain focused and straight to the point. I have seen situations where such play out without numbers.

I actually agree with you. You also have to find a perfect timing for you to be able to do it.

Define playing with words? I'm not sure I get exactly what you mean. I think u mean do you write in complicated English or whatever language you are writing. I like phraseology enjoy that in my writing. That's taking words that no thought to put together and putting them together. The age of complicated English in my opinion is long dead and gone. You can mix up words without making them complicated.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Playing with words in the sense that you tend to use all manner of figures of speech when you write. An example is using kicked the bucket as a idiom that someone has died. Such words, how often do you use it when you write.

Sometimes you need to do it to put some flavor on your story. A cliff hanger indeed. Just like in a mystery story it adds up curiosity to the ready and they love that so much.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Yeah, most of the writers always enjoy that kind of flavor in writing. There is this man in our area that became popular all because of the heavy grammars that he makes use of when he writes. People always look forward to reading his articles.

I do, but it depends on the type of work. For example, whenever I am writing just general topics, I do play with the words, but if I am writing an article that is fact-based, I just lay the points direct. Recently, I was writing about various health schools in the US, such work needed nothing but facts. Actually, the client wanted short and precise work.

Thus, I can say it is good to play with words, but you should know your audience.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
It is good to play with words, but we should always be careful about who are writing for. There are some articles that all we need to do is to write the facts and as such, there is no need talking much with words.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mirodge
There are words that has the same meaning. I utilized every meaning of the word in my content. I don't want to be sounded like repeating a word or being redundant. Using other word it is more like adding on a spice in a food that make it different from the original one, but always make it simple and understandable.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
That is another aspect. When we have the ability to mix words when we write, it always make it easier for our readers to see the need for them to flow with what we write. I agree with you that it should be understanding and straight to the point as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't like to write poems and so I'm afraid I'm not good with playing words. I am actually a campus journalist during high school and my assignment was to write news articles. In news articles, news writers are required to write straight to the point and to use terminologies that are common and used by the general public. And so, because of that experience, I no longer use any figurative language with anything I write because I always go straight to the point and I guess my vocabulary is already set with words that could be easily understood by the general public.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
If you are making contents on news articles, then it is pretty cool to use simple words as it is something meant for wider audience. Also, it is not always easy for those that are trying to do this when they make news articles as you won't be really able to attract more readers to your posts.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
Yep, sometimes I do some wordplay just to have a light moment in my content and to make it a bit fun. But it really depends on the topic, if it's serious, formal or not. If the topic/subject is about business then it's best to be formal but if it's entertainment like movie reviews then some wordplay can come in handy.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Yeah, it basically depends on the topic that you are writing on. When I read some entertainment news on sports, I tend to see those writers making use of words that are funny and the way that they write always show that aspect as well.

I usually do! In general, I like to play with words to make my content more interesting and fun to read. It's important to keep readers engaged, and word play definitely helps with that. I think the important thing is to strike the perfect balance between straightforward writing and creative word play, so that readers are neither bored by the monotony or overwhelmed by the gimmicks. The ultimate goal should be rich content that's easy yet exciting to read, except of course if this is a specific type of content such as a news article, which requires brevity.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
I agree with you that finding the balance is something that matters so much. You should always look at ways that you can mix creative writing with the rest of the words that you plan to add to your articles. This is something that may looking a daunting task for those that are starting out.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's a great insight. The "balance between creative word play and straightforward writing" is what every writer should possess. I like it.

Well, actually I don't play with words that much. I mean whatever I feel like writing about any specific subject I go on writing that. However in the process of writing that content, if wordplay happens naturally then that is what I like and do. I can't write in a predetermined manner, maybe that is because I am comparatively new to this field of content writing.

Sometimes I do play with words when I am writing but I think it is only limited depending on the nature of what I would be writing. It is great to play with words when writing a poetry since it is very common thing. Just like others I do not also feel pressured when writing to certain topics since most of the time I am enjoying them most.

I find that when I am writing creative stuff I play a lot with repetition and alliteration, but this can work to my disadvantage in serious stuff as I have to watch I have not done the same with that. I do rather enjoy playing with words so I write a fair amount of poetry as that is the easiest format to do that with.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do. Playing with words, rearranging my patterns and adding twists with my style are great practice. It helps me a lot creating very different characters in a novel. Plus it helps me improve my vocabularies. It is still best to improve vocabularies. And a great way to do this is to play with words.

I don't play with words when I simply write something descriptive or narrative. I am not poetic but I have been trying to compose poems or songs. In doing so, I play with words. I use words which are easy to understand but convey my thoughts and emotions. As much I possible, I desire to get my message across.

Playing with words work best in writing poetry and novels. It makes it more creative. I am into writing articles so its more of being straight forward and contents that are quick to understand. I admire writers who can play with words well because it shows how artistic their minds can be.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I see what you mean @mdayrit. People who write poetry play with words, I must admit one of our subjects was English literature in school. We used to do poetry and I used to do horribly. I never understood any poems. I think this is an old way of thinking. I've seen modern poetry which I can relate to and understand. I think this way of writing is truly over.

Depends on who will be your target readers. For kids you should not play with words. Kids may get bored when you do that. Playing with words definitely fit for poems and poetics writings.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
When we are making poems for kids and other contents, we should make it straight to the point as they are quite young to behave in those ways that you expect them to. So, to keep things simple is the best way to go.

I do play with words, most of the time when I write poems. But, with articles that need to be straight and simple, playing with words is a bit risky. Most readers prefer to read something that is short and straight to the point, thus, playing with words will affect the interest of some.

You can use lots of paragraphs when you are trying to improve on the way that you make use of words when making such contents. This is what I recently learnt and it has been working fine for me.

I play with words a lot especially when it is in a creative format like poetry. Word plays are very enticing when reading because there is build up when setting the word play, there is a hype then the delivery of the word play it self. In creative writing word plays are very crucial or some what of a norm because the style of word play it self is a very creative one thus emphasizing more on the "creative" aspect of creative writing. How ever word plays would not be needed and in most cases be informal if used in other types of writing , so when I do an article for example i only focus on the facts and details. That is all

As a creative writer, I always try to play with words when I am making some story contents as I expect my readers to feel fine with it as well. The major thing that we should always look at as well is the way that we can keep pushing for the best of everything when we write.

Playing with words when writing is good but you also need to consider the kind of content that you make. I believe that it is not applicable to all kinds of topic. It can be helpful to kill boredom when writing or this can open your imagination. But no matter how we play with words, we should always be careful and think of our readers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
This is true as we should always consider how our writers will feel with the way that we write. This is the reason I always ensure that I play less with words nowadays when I am writing as well. That is the only way that I can improve better on what I do.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes I do love playing with words. It's very fun and exciting especially when you make a good rhyme skim or a tricky word set. Playing with words can be tricky sometimes especially if you are dealing it with a story to tell. But if you get it right and make it sound good then for sure you''ll make a great output on it. One thing that I notice when you play with words is you have to make sense for it to be enjoyable to read. You cannot simply just put random words than look good together but don't sound together. So it's really more on compare and contrast to see the pros and cons of your play of words.

I do play with words when I am writing. Just simply because I do not want my articles to be boring. I remember when I first started writing, I had the tendency to use the same word over and over. Now, I really try not to if I can help it. I make use of the thesaurus. It just makes my articles and writing that much stronger.
