Between pictures and words, the understanding actually depends on how they are expressed. If the words are written clearly with simple and easily understood words, then definitely it's going to be easy for someone to understand but when it written with ambiguous words, it will be very difficult to understand. Now the same thing goes with pictures. If the pictures have a clear understanding then someone can be able to grasp the information that is being passed but what it's an ambiguous picture there is no way one is going to be able to understand it.

I often strive to use concise words. It's very easy to be misunderstood. It's really uncomfortable to have to explain yourself. This is why I prefer communicating in person so as to avoid misconceptions.

Haha, well one thing that is prevalent in all human beings is different understanding and interpretation to one subject matter by different individuals. The same thing which you said to Mr. A wouldn't be understood the same way by Mr. B.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's funny. Life's all about understanding each other. Doesn't matter form of communication we use. What's important is understand what we're trying to say.

Words are easier to understand than pictures. Words are direct to the point. Whereas with pictures there is no direct meaning unless there are words labeled on them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Words are easier to understand, but it can get too plain and boring when presented just by itself, so it works better when a pocture is accompanied by a few words to give a general description behind it, but there is a deeper meaning behind the piece as a whole when thoroughly analyzed.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I agree. A combination of the two works really well. But I find that words are more straight to the point. Pictures rely on us understanding what they mean. Sometimes certain drawings or symbols don't work for those who aren't familiar with it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Yeah, pictures add so much more depth, whereas words are mostly limited by language and can only go deeper by a level which is still understandable when analyzed enough. Pictures or drawings are so much more difficult to analyze, which is why paintings can have a lot of different interpretations, and even then, some people won't understand the meaning behind it.

I think it also depends on the kind of medium we're talking about here. If we're talking advertisements, you simply can't have just one or the other. Well, I suppose you could have just text in theory, but it doesn't make for a very good advertisement. On the other hand, having just an image for an advertisement simply isn't logical either. A combination of both is necessary.

But if we're talking about art, which is meant to be interpreted by an individual, then one or the other will do because it's all about how the person perceives it. I guarantee you someone at some point has probably printed a single word or letter on a big piece of paper and called it art.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's funny. You're not exaggerating there. I know that people can simply put something and call it art. Perception really emphasizes the subjective nature of artworks. But I guess it's why it works. We all interpret things differently and so this allows us to compare and contrast each other's opinion.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
"Perception really emphasizes the subjective nature of artworks. But I guess it's why it works."

I was actually just about to say, that is exactly why even the stuff I have trouble calling "art"
is still very much considered art. The thing is that, art in the mind of the common man is generally considered "pretty looking drawings on paper." That is art in the average sense. But the truth is that art is anything that can stimulate one's perception and encourage discussion and debate over individual interpretation. That doesn't mean I won't think that dipping your butt in a can of paint and butt-bumping a canvas isn't low-quality, low-effort content, but I can't not call it art if it was made with a certain intent.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Yeah, perception definitely changes a lot of the interpretation of art. A simple art done by a world-famous painter can also be replicated by any other good artist, but knowing that the world-famous painter has already done great artworks in the past puts a lot of weight on his relatively simple art for people to care and give their own interpretation of what the artwork means. When it's done by an unknown painter, the public won't even take a second look.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Good point, the medium can influence if one is more effective over the other. In some cases, other factors are involved, e.g. in radio advertisements where the delivery of the words and accompanying music can be as effective as TV ads, or in audiobooks/ books in general which can be interpreted differently than a movie adaptation.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It's the wonder of delivery and communication. The manner of execution carries much significance on how clearly it's interpreted. People recognize the splendid nature of well-made performance or artwork.

Agreed. It's like those Infographics. They are both entertaining and informative at the same time. The graphics or art catches the attention of the reader while the text does their work to give information. Infographics are a great combination of words and pictures.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Yeah, good infographics really find a way to make the information digestible through the clever use of design and images to accompany the text depending on the layout. in this context, both words and pictures have to work together in presenting a coherent thought to relay information to the public.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It actually depends on the topic. There are certain topics that needs to be explained in words rather than picture only because it lacks explanation and you need to understand it thoroughly but there are also some circumstances that even a picture will explain the entire message of the topic or whatever it is. But I remember my graphics professor way back in college, she said that most millennial nowadays are more visual people so they tend to be more interested in images/picture rather than reading a novel-like texts. In my opinion, I'm fine either of the two but it depends on the circumstances.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do agree that people nowadays are becoming more visual nowadays and that there are situations in which words are more effective than pictures and vice versa but for short messages I have to say that pictures are more effective because it has a recall effect unlike words which relies on memory.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
You're right. More people have become visual learners. It's more common to find those of us who prefer pictures. Words can still be useful when done right.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think words are much more easier to understand, because all you have to do is to read it. However, picture is much more interesting and much better to use, because it will help you to create some explanation about the pictures, and you will get a lot of different explanation from the people with the same picture depends on how their minds work well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Words are easier if we are talking about pictures that are not being explained well, but when we talk of pictures that are being explained in a better way, I would have to say that it is the best unlike words that can flick off our memory within a short period of time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
Yeah, that's right, because in some presentation without the images and even it explained well, it's really hard to imagine what exactly they mean. For example in a medical presentation, even they explain well, about the internal organs and give all the details, it's really hard to remember that, you need the actual images to understand and remember that organs.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Images have a stronger impact on our memories. That's because lots of people are visual learners. Words have more flexibility in terms of use. But pictures will continue to be the most convenient form of communication.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Words are easier to understand when they're well-written. One factor is the simplicity of how they're written along with the words used. If they're really easy to interpret, they'll better serve as clear instructions.

I think in simple messages Photos can eliminate the language barrier thus it's easier to understand let say a drawing of a girl silhouette can easily be translated into a girls bathroom, the same with a male one.

On the other hand when it comes to complex messages, Words are easier to understand. Although a mixture of both which could be called an Infograph is in my opinion more effective than plain words or plain photos or images.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I agree. A great mixture of pictures and words can convey complex messages more clearly. That's why posters often give us the right message we need. We get the emotional reaction they meant for us to receive.

Images and pictures are always easier to stick to the mind of people unlike what we have with words. This is the reason even many online marketers are now adopting the pattern of using pictures and videos in many of their presentations to drive home their points. So, I feel that our world today is all about what the picture can do and that is really great for me.

If you recalled correctly about the quote, "A picture is worth more than a thousand words". This is exactly how it is with my understanding of words and pictures. Yes, it's true that a well written and presented words can make a good impression but with pictures and videos included, it offers more vivid explanations and clarity.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I do agree with you on that images and videos are easily understood than written words since it's more appealing and this makes it easily recognizable and understood with a higher recall percentage than plain script.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I do agree with that quote, because pictures can be understood by all while words must be translated to ones native language first to be understood. Although some people do understand several languages in written form but most can only read what is written in their local language.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I agree with you on that pictures are easier to understand and it has no boundaries when it comes to understanding, unlike words which is bounded geographically, I mean may people can only understand their own language right?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think so too. Pictures are more capable of grabbing people's immediate attention. Most marketing tactics focus on showing colorful and vibrant graphics. The visual nature of the media adds to the effect of being hard to ignore.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I know, right? Pictures have this quality to them that draws people's attention. It's no surprise that mass media loves to take advantage of that. And with the ever increasing reliance on digital content, more of us are becoming susceptible to such silly tactics.

words are easier to understand compare to pictures. You need to make many guesses for pictures which might lead to misunderstanding

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The thing with words is that it goes a long way to show the direct message which is good to an extent. However, the best part I like about pictures is that it get everyone interpreting it the way that they want to. That is simply good as well since you have to make your caption of the picture that you are looking at.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Good question I must say.I think that words are better to understand because as you read you get the purpose of the sentence as well as the meaning of it while looking at a picture you can have multiple ideas and understanding for it.We are all different and well all see some things different, that's why words are more understandable then pictures.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Words are definitely easier to understand, although they can also have different interpretations per person much like a picture, which is why some people have lengthy debates over certain books and their meaning. Still, it's easier to analyze words because it is all written out in front of you and you don't have to look for every hidden detail like in a picture.

Honestly I prefer pictures than words because sometimes what you see is what you interpret in your mind. It is easy for me to arrive at a certain conclusion through the use of pictures especially if they are really clear and precise. But I think it really depends on the circumstances since there are some instances that pictures are not applicable but only words should be used to arrive at a certain answer or explanations.

I think pictures overall can overcome the language barrier when it comes to simple messages. If we would install 2 signboards in a number of countries, one with written script the other with an image, I would bet that more people would understand the signboard with an image on it.

It's a lot more easier if both pictures and words are present. Sometimes words or pictures alone are hard to understand but it all depends how they used the words and pictures. Some words are difficult to understand as authors used words that are not so particular. It might be poetic just like in other images also. They sometimes used abstract pictures or artworks that's really hard to understand especially those are not artists. It might be good if both of them are present in a book or e-book or whatever content it might be, for them to be easily understood by readers.

For me I’d honestly say a combination of both helps. It’s probably why I like infographics so much, where I can see both some words as well as pictures to help me make sense of particular information. A well laid out infographic can be a really huge help in getting a message across.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There are instances where pictures can paint a thousand words, so to speak. But I still look at words as the more clearer manner of communicating a message. Words can be specific while pictures are always general in appearance and it will depend on the beholder what kind of message the picture is all about. I think the ancient Egyptians were using hieroglyphs which is a form of pictogram, a system of writing that uses images.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I prefer words when it comes to direct messages. But I find that pictures can communicate a whole message and more if done right. So it's definitely a case by case basis. Though, who doesn't like seeing pretty pictures with perfect funny captions, right?

I understand better if it is in picture format. It must be the reason why I like infographics very much. They summarize the things that are needed for a topic and show them in a very entertaining format or manner. Although I also like reading books.

Words are the most easiest in my opinion. Reading will not only tell you everything, the word it self will tell you exactly what is the meaning. So reading will directly tells you the point. Using pictures will not tell you exactly what is says, your ability to understand gestures and factors of the picture is the only way you could understand what it means. So basically when you use picture to understand something, your basically answering through your perspectives.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
I think for those people that are fun of reading would really prefer that kind of way because they are being motivated to do that way. If reading really gives the full details of a certain information then I think more people would really choose this one. But sometimes reading takes some time before it can be interpreted on its whole definition as a whole.

More than being fun of reading, I love to. So yes, obviously if you love to read, and if you're like me that read anything, than for sure you will choose reading instead of pictures. Let's say pictures, drawings, figures, shapes, are not explicit all the time, so it can be somehow abstract for people, like having a lot of meaning and interpretations. To me, words make more sense, at least most of the time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think pictures are easier to understand. Visuals make the better presentation because they are easier to understand . This is the era of entertainment, people need to be stimulated by pictures to pay attention. That's why celebrity news is always trending because it keeps people entertained. There was a study done recently which showed that only 6% of the population around the world read books. In my opinion this is not an encouraging statistic for words.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

For me, words and pictures are both important, especially in presentations. Not all people can easily understand words sometimes they needed to visualize things before they can clearly understand what they're trying to say. For instance, in the presentation of figures, they added charts just to explain how the figures move so in that way audience doesn't have to think how it happens because they can already see it in the charts.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree, it all depends on the proffered way of the reader or interpreter. Some people are visual learners, and they are very good in interpreting by just using the gestures and elements in the picture.
People who prefer words are likely to be constructive, they often use words to build the scenario on their mind.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

romyter013
I as well agree on that. It's depends on the person on how he/she understand and visualise the picture or the written one. Sometimes we need a moment of silence just for us to figure it out what are they really trying to portray so we can get the idea on what or how we feel on the words provided or from the pictures shown to us.

I suppose this kind of chimes back to my days in college as a Graphic Design/Advertisement major. We were taught to not depend on one or the other but make them work together in harmony, because people don't really know what direction to take when you give them just one. Either words or pictures alone can be interpreted in hundreds of different ways, which isn't exactly good for trying to get a message across. In fact, it's awful, especially in terms of advertising. Melding words and pictures is a must if you're trying to point a viewer in a certain direction.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Honestly, I'm not very good with abstract things. So, if the picture/drawing is not fully expressive by itself, for sure I won't understand it. So, let's say I stay with words. But, it happens that sometimes, people is not very easy on words, and they turn out putting flowery words/expressions, that doesn't make it nice. As an advice, whenever you are trying to explain something with words, do it in a simple way, using common expressions, and if you are going to use pictures, make sure that it fully explains for itself.

My vocabulary's not that vast and rich so I'll go with pictures. Although words are much more easier to understand especially if it's arranged in to a sentence. However, photos are easier to understand because it generally reflects the whole idea of what someone is trying to convey. With words, a lot of times, it's easier to misunderstand especially with the difference in tones and pronunciations. With photos, you get what you see. However, this doesn't apply to abstract photos because from the word 'abstract' they may hold hundreds and thousands of meanings depending on how the viewer perceive it.

Words have a better understanding the pictures in general.Pictures can have several meaning to them and a lot of people understand words more than pictures like I do.It comes to a fact that a lot of people think different. In other words not everyone would understand or think in a same way when looking at a picture.

There is an experiment about if understanding with pictures is better than memorizing the letter and the result if the test is understanding with pictures is better, why? maybe understanding something in the picture is more clear than the text, or it depends on the vocabulary, if the vocabulary is good I will understand it if it's not, the idea is not clear and I will not understand it. Now I do with my own style of an experiment, showing the same idea but one is in a picture and one is with, I will base the results of how clear or how easy it is to understand the idea. So I search those things on the web trying some quiz about memorizing, some essays like "what do you see in this picture" and the results are I understand better in the picture than in text, maybe because of the picture you can see the scene u can use your imagination but in the picture, sometimes I get lost so I think Picture is better than in text.

For me, words are much easier to understand. Pictures have more meanings, it may mean something to me, it may mean something to others, so there is no definite meaning but that's also what I like about it. Pictures always have a thousand meanings because we all have a different perspective on a certain topic. Words are much easier to understand because the meaning is direct, it depends if it has deeper meaning though because of the metaphors and stuff.

Pictures and words can both send a different message depending on the person who is interpreting or saying it. Pictures can mean different from one person to another. It depends on how a person decodes what the picture wants to convey. This can also be the same case for using words. Words can sometimes mean different depending on how it is expressed. One example is when you read a text message wherein you think that a person is angry but in actual they are not and is just explaining. So if I were to choose between pictures and words, I would say that I prefer using words. Interpretation of words is closer than what it actually means than in pictures where you can get a lot.

It's also important that the message that a person is trying to convey is clear.

People nowadays are getting the hang of it being visual learners and a maybe a mix of other learning styles out there. There are factors that affect or influence our perception on all the things we see, hear or read every day and this allows us to make decisions and judgments in a snap. I think that both works best hand in hand for the realization that we are all different in understanding things on so many ways that's why words and photos should be together for better understanding on any matter or thing.

I think understanding pictures is easier. Because we all see the same thing, so there are fewer probabilities that we'll get things wrong. But it's harder with words. Languages are very complex and it requires a lot of contexts for you to understand the exact idea the speaker wants to convey. For example, one single gesture can send a whole different meaning than the one intended, but with pictures, I think these factors don't count.

Try to remember when we're still in grade school, most of the children loved to just look on the pictures on their story books rather than to read the whole story. Another thing, people vary in terms of understanding the words or whatever article they are reading. There are also complicated sentences that are used by some writers. Thus, for me, pictures are easier to understand.
We also have the old saying "A picture tells a thousand words". A writer can write many things just by looking on single picture. But some will have difficulty picturing in their minds whatever they are reading.

In general, I prefer words. There are some circumstances though or topics that are best expressed through pictures. Not all words are straightforward. That's why we have ambiguous sentences and rhetorical questions as some of the examples. The context of the situation though will help us know the intention or the meaning of what was said or written. While interpreting pictures will be influenced by our perception which can lead to different interpretations. But as I mentioned, it still depends on the situation.

Pictures for sure are more easier to understand. Words are just pictures of letters formed together into a word. With a picture, you can instantly get to form your own interpretation of what it means just from the shapes and colors. With words, you need to read the letters and form the word in your head before you can start to understand it.

Once you read a sentence or a paragraph, sometimes its all flat like no emotion unless you really put your self in the story. Unlike pictures, its already there, with the stroke of the colours, expression of the faces or the character on it, you'll get to know already and you read of what ay they trying to portray by their movements.

I choose the graphically illustrated one- the picture. People are tend to be more visual nowadays and I can say that I'm one of them. It means that people prefer to understand something through images/pictures/icons/etc. If it's moving like an animated, that's more preferable to many people. Personally, why do I like pictures over texts is because I tend to get bored on reading though I still read it when it is in text form. But it is still depend on the topic or on the situation because there are cases that you need to write it in text form in order for your readers to fully understand or you can just show it through picture. I know using picture have cons but people are too smart today and they can easily understand what you are trying to say in that picture that you shared. You also need to be creative enough to be able to deliver your message well, or else they might misunderstood it.

When it's about adverts, I do think that photos or images are easier to understand because it has no geographical boundaries. Unlike words which are regionalized. Written words in a familiar language can be understood in one part of the globe but in other parts there would be a language barrier.

I think the answer to this question will depend upon what is the subject involved. if you are trying to explain something simple which does not require you to tell something in detail then a picture will be the best option. if however you are not able to explain your message only with the help of a picture and some more details need to be provided then you have no other option but to explain it with words. I think it will be much more appealing to the readers if you combine your writing with the appropriate pictures.

It is easier to understand words since you have to read and comprehend it. Unlike pictures that you need to analyze it before understanding what it really means.

Many believed that a picture is worth a thousand of words. I prefer words because I believe I am word smart than picture smart. I appreciate pictures but I find it difficult to interpret a picture or derive meaning from it. I sometimes get into the trap of having another meaning or interpretation that that of the artist's.

We learn from pictures first, those flashcards we used to play with when we were young. Our brains remember better with pictures, but as our gray matter develops, it also evolves from pictures to words. We associate the meaning of things, our understanding of them, by words. I would say, however, that it is easiest to understand right away pictures, especially in siuations where we need to be quick. On the road, we see road signs, not words. Emergency devices has a corresponding picture labels on them.

They go hand in hand for me. I prefer pictures with detailed explanation when following a guide or instruction. But most of the time, pictures are more handy. I can picture out better on what to do or where should I work on.

For me, words can give direct meaning to the topic. While in pictures they'll give more than one meaning. Some artist gives different meaning on the picture while others have theyre own idea. It's in your way how to look at it.

Well I am more at ease with words. Or at least, words with clear concise instructions. Otherwise, if it goes too long it might have been better shown of in pictures. As they say, a picture may paint a thousand words.

What to you is more easier to understand words or pictures: It depends on one person on how they make it to be easy to understand. If the words are spoken given clearly then its easier to understand. If the pictures are well-organized from the top then its also easy to understand.
