What is the first book that made you cry?

I usually don't read sad books. For me, it's hard enough to  watch a sad movie. And in books the emotions, sadness,  the tears are much stronger so I just avoid them. But a couple years ago I couldn't resist reading a book called "Me before you" (Yes, I watched the movie too) and I cried like a fool while reading it and I don't regret it! First time crying while reading a book was kind of special to me.
What about you, did this ever happen to you? What book were you reading?

Oh, I clearly remember the first book that I read, because it was also the first book that made me cry. It was "A Walk to Remember" by Nicholas Sparks. It was the book that I read after graduating from high school and I remember that I started being addicted to novels after reading it. The story was so beautiful and so was the movie. Until now, I still can't accept the death of the main character, but I know that that's the trademark of A Walk To Remember. Though, I couldn't accept it, I still wouldn't want to change a thing about the story though.

I have read some Nicholas Sparks' books before. " A Walk to Remember", is one of them. Although not the first book that made me cry but certainly one of the most memorable. I watched the movie and I just can't help but cry all the way. It is certainly amazing. I don't like reading sad books but this is one of the best.

I haven’t read any Nicholas Sparks books but have seen many of the movie adaptations. He certainly knows how to tug at the heart strings! I also love “The Notebook” which made me cry!

I also like this movie. Even though I haven't read its book I can say that it is a story that could touch everyone's heart. The death of the main character is very touching and I almost cried. I have watched it with my boyfriend beside me and I appreciated him more after watching that movie.

I haven't read the book yet but that is one of my favorite movies. The story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Nicholas Sparks is a master in making stories that can make you cry.

I love this book, I alsi cried because of this. It is very emotional and very different from the movie, but it has the same feeling, the same tragic ending.

There's only two books that made me tear up, one of which is a classic, Wuthering Heights written by Emily Jane Bronte an English Writer. It's her one and only Novel. It's about an Orphan named Heathcliff and his unwavering love for Catherine. It's a beautiful romantic tragedy with some semblance to Alexander Dumas's tale of The Count of Monte Cristo.

I think it was "A crooked kind of perfect" since it is the first book that I have read, and it was kind of about family and stuff. It made me in the end because I was touched by how the family of the main character change.

It is a great feeling to feel sadness on the first book that you've read. It is because like me, there was a feeling of wanting to read more to ease the sadness that the first book caused.

That also like me, I love to read to ease the sadness of the previous books have read but if it's comedy I won't want it to end.

I think can considered the manga a book too. The manga I read is not a typical content you cant see in the market. The title of this is "A town where you live". The story is about romance of two young boy and girl in the town where they live but on the under circumstances they been seperated. In my comment here, i know what your thinking, its another romance but just give it a try to read this one.

I actually didn't experience crying because of manga. Well, I only have read few, but most of them are just coming of age and adventure genres. If that one is so good that made you cry, I think I should try reading it. Thank you.

I haven’t read the book Me Before You but I did see the movie version and that made me cry! I usually cry more over movies than written texts though, I guess since you can see the emotion on the characters faces!

It's nice to be able to express emotions when either reading or watching something. I don't think there's anything wrong with crying over a movie or a book. In fact I think it makes someone very kind and empathetic when they can relate to a character in something so much.

I seem to be lost in this topic but maybe it is one of those science fiction that my husband let me read. The title was Bicentennial Man. I have to admit that I didn't finish reading the book but I had to see the movie when it was shown in the cinema. It was a touching movie that the robot who served the family of "Little Miss" had wanted to be human. He had lived for more than a century and to be considered human some human parts had to attached to him. In the end, he died because he became human.

Tuesdays with Morrie was the first book that I read and made me cry. The story was great and very inspirational. There is some part of this book that made me cry like when Morrie was reminiscing his childhood with his mother and eventually his mother died. I really felt the pain and sadness with the words that were used in this book.

The first book that made me cry is "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. The time that I received that book, I'm into something that kept bothering my mind if I can still make it. I'm losing myself as I'm losing faith towards it. But then I received that book and it helped me to be enlightened that everything will come in the right time as long I kept on thinking about it.

Actually it was not a book but an inspiring short story and now a part of my compilations of inspiring short stories and illustrations. The short story entitled "How Much Do You Love God". The story was truly great and inspiring and it hit me right through the heart. I poured out all my emotions in this story. Feels like I am the one whom God was talking to. And just like the last line of this story, " and for the first time, I truly prayed ".

Oh gosh, The Book Thief. While it will force you to read with several handkerchiefs at your fingertips it will also return your faith in humanity. This book is so unique because is narrated by Death, who tells the story of Liesel, a girl who is adopted by two Germans who live in Hitler's Germany. Through Death, you will see the history of this little girl and of Max, a Jew who hides from the Nazi regime. Liesel learns from Max and from other secondary characters that accompany her, to live a life that she never expected and to treasure objects that never before had a real value for her. Armed with books that she begins to steal slowly, the Book Thief will soon fall in love with letters and life.

There are thousands of movies that are capable of making one to cry. It very easy to produce such movies unlike how hard it is to write a book that is capable of invoking the feeling of sadness and emotional surge in such a way that one would be forced to cry.

Yeaah I agree since one will connect to a movie more than they do with a book which means that every time you come across such a book, you ought to treat it like a masterpiece.

I think if I am not mistaken The Book Thief has a movie adaptation. I think I have watched this movie back in 2013 and it really made me cry. All books or movies about world war 2 has a deep impact on my emotios. I do sympathize with the hardships of those people back then and I feel very lucky that I have enjoyed the peace that those people back in world war 2 has fought for.

The book thief is one of my favorite movies. While it certainly doesn't make me cry, it is packed with intense scenes that would make it impossible for anyone to not feel something by the end of the movie.

Movies never make me cry but neither do books. However when the story has a really sad ending it has a different effect on me. It will leave me feeling a little depressed. One book that had that effect on me is called, "120 Days of Sodom." It is so bleak and gory . . .

Certainly not a book I would recommend.

It was the accounts of Anne Frank in "A Diary of a Young Girl". I was in highschool when I read it. Anne Frank is a Jewish girl who along with other kids hid from the Nazi Germans for 2 long years, before they where captured and later on died of typhoid fever. The Book contains her dreams and aspirations as well as accounts of the horrors of war and was written during that time she was in hiding.

Someone recommended reading this book "A Diary of a Young Girl" in the past a very long time ago but I never got the opportunity to actually purchase the book to read.

Immediately you just mentioned about the book now, it flashed back in my mind at once that I have been recommended to read the book in the past. I'm definitely going to get it and read during Christmas holidays.

Oh, I can only imagine how heartbreaking that book would have been to read. I think any kind of story about that period of time would be harrowing, but coming from a child's perspective it would be even more upsetting. I'm sure I would be in tears too.

I think the book that made me cry was about a novel book which is all about love and romance which has an interesting story line. I just forgot the tile of the book but then I was really impressed by the story because it was true to life story of a soon to be couple but then they did not fall on each other because the guy died due to an accident during the day that they were supposed to have their wedding. It was really sad because they both grow up in the same place and they were playmates during their younger age. It was really a long story to tell and I don't want to finished it because it makes me sad.

It did happen to me twice. The very first book that really really made me cry is "Message in the Bottle". It was written by Nicholas Sparks. The story tackles about past true love, true love of the present, facing fears and so much more. The letters in itself are so heart warming that I couldn't stop the tears from falling. It was really sad.

From my experience with reading a lot books till date, love stories have a very good way of creeping into our emotions and making us cry even if we don't really want to cry. When the emotions boils too far, it becomes difficult to hold back the tears and all hell is going to break through. "Message in the Bottle" is a very good love story.

It was really a great novel. Nicholas Sparks has a way of writing sad stories. But the movie adaptation was not as good for me. Maybe because there were a lot of parts that were either cut off or altered to fit a two hour screening.

I think that the very first book which I read that made me cry was Hamlet. It was such a tragic novel that it was very difficult for me to hold back my tears and sad emotion.

Also, Romeo and Juliet was another tragic novel that really got me moved to tears with the death of both lovers in the story.

Well, there are many books that have made me cry after reading the story. However, a book that made me very sad and cry incessantly was a book named " The Diary of Anne Frank ".I guess most of us will know about the sad story of Anne and her family. There struggle to survive in the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands has been described by Anne in her diary and while reading it you will surely feel sad and emotional. In the end, Anne and most of her family died in concentration camps. Once her Diary was discovered Anne became an unforgettable legend.

The first book that made me cry and tear up was actually I am Number Four written by Pittacus Lore. Until now I am still reading this great series and I can tell you, this is one adventure a teenager like me would really enjoy and fall in love with. I cried where number four lost the one who took good care of him throughout the whole book one. It was heartbreaking and I couldn't stop crying because I was so hooked to the book. Knowing the characters and each of their own unique personalities really makes me wonder what happened to the movie? Why did they have to stop production and not continue such a great movie? I really hope they do a reboot of this because this is one of the greatest books I have read with such great action, adventure, emotions getting to you and the aura of how you put yourself with the characters.

There was a book that I read when I was a child about a black kitten. It was called Abandoned but I can't remember who wrote it. I read it over and over and it made me cry each and every time.

The story was well written and in-depth. The poor little kitten was dumped by her owners out in the countryside far away from her home. The story followed her journey and the people she met, right through to having kittens herself. She finally found a human that gave her love but it wasn't long after that, that she died. Even writing about it brings tears to my eyes.

Some books have left me sad and depressed but I don't recall crying over them. One is a book on Marilyn Monroe. I can't remember the title but it was an old book that I borrowed from a church library. Her story was heartbreaking and the book helped me see the person behind the Hollywood icon. The Sicilian, a novel by Mario Puzo, was also a tragic story of a local hero. And, who would have known, reading the novels of Dr. Jose Rizal, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo had left me depressed for a time. The novels featured tragic love stories, failed expectations, and hopelessness during the Spanish colonial period. Jose Rizal was such a great storyteller.

I watched the movie of me before you first I cried so hard but loved it so much that I read both books. It was a sad amazing love story that was written so well you could feel every emotion. I am not fond of reading books with sad stories. It doesn't interest me. Although, there are moral lessons from those type of book but it bores me. Mostly of the book that I read before are fairy tales, science, philosophy, inspirational and cook books.
