Do you treat writing as a craft, or do you just write?

Do you treat writing as a craft, or do you just write?

It seems clear from the grammar posts I have made that there are two schools of thought. Some of us care whether we follow conventions and grammar rules and are eager to improve the craft. Others believe that they should just write and as long as the reader understands, then that is all that matters. Which camp do you fall in?

Writing is a creative art, so in a it should be treated as a craft as well. Not everyone can actually write well, so for those possess the skills, they should treat it with care and love because being a writer is not as easy as it seems.

I agree, everyone can try and can write but not everyone is good at it.

It takes a lot of time and practice to become very good at writing. Let me make it absolutely clear that no one is 100% perfect when it comes to writing on any topic. There are bound to be some minor errors in your writing but when you are good at it, the errors would be at minimal level.

yes, and it is not just about grammars its about how you write it too, how effective are the words you choose.

Yes. Nobody is perfect. Sometimes, I feel down when I write something and discover errors. It saddens at the same time encourages me to practice and write better. Writing is not easy, you need to have the passion and dedication to do it.

I agree also. But I think that grammar is also as important as the story. For example if I read a good story, but the text is filled with grammar mistakes I won't read it till the end because I am so irritated and can't focus on the story.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Alymae
True. Whenever I read a story and there were a lot of wrong grammars, I ditched it. It makes me confused. As for me, I am aware that I have wrong grammars in my write-ups that is why I do my best to develop my writing by studying grammars.

what makes a good craft? Years of practice and experience. If you keep on writing you will soon be able to distiguish your style and master your own writing.

I agree with you. Being able to possess a talent in writing is amazing. Writers should never be underestimated too.

Definitely agree! People are sometimes just being mean toward writers. They are always treating writing as 'something everyone can do'. And from my experience that is so not true! If you want to write you have to read and unfortunately many people don't.

I agree. It takes more than just the ability to put words on a page in order to be a successful writer. I see the ability to write well as a gift and privelege, but not an excuse to say I have no need to learn.

I think that it is imperative even for those who cannot write well to make a constant effort to do so as they progress if they want their pieces to have an impact on the long haul.

I agree with you that writing is a creative art because we are giving much time and focus on it to have a better and the best ideas. It is really a skills to write good things which should be given some importance because it can give us more benefits.

I agree with you that writing is a creative art that should be treated as a craft. I once tried to guide my friend but after one week, he told me that writing is not his thing. Instead, he is a better web developer.

I also treat my writing as a Craft, because I'm earning some extra income from it. Over the years I have learned how to monetize my writing by offering writing services and by joining paid to post sites.

You know, I don't know that I always treat it as a craft. Depending on the style I'm writing, sometimes I just let it pour from the heart! I don't analyze each and every word I write, and I try to just let things come out naturally - such as when I respond to comments on here! I like being able to interact with others without necessarily worrying about my words and perfect grammar all the time!

In saying that, I do find when I'm commissioned to write certain pieces, I have to treat it as a craft and do a lot of research to make it the best it can be.

I am not a writer and I don't consider myself a writer because I don't have the talent to write good stories. With articles I know that some of my write ups are mediocre although I also have good articles to show. When I write an article it is not a craft but an expression of my emotion and a showcase of my knowledge. I usually write to share what I know and if it is not enough then I do some research to augment my knowledge on the subject that I am writing.

Making some deep research about what we write on is pretty necessary for us to get better. In as much as some are just writing for the fun of it, I believe that it is always better for us to do it where it is necessary and correct as well.

I like the way you view your writing, it is important that as an article they should write real things with evidence.

There is nothing anyone can't learn. One thing I know about writing is that reading well-written books and articles will compel you to improve your writing the more you are exposed to it. So even if someone doesn't actively try to get better, reading more will see to it that there is progress - albeit slow - in the right direction.

Not too long ago, I couldn't write something anyone would want to read but over the years the quality of my writing has improved significantly.

You make a very good point. If we do not access good writing, we will not recognise it when we write it. It is good to see someone can identify their progress like this.

I believe I fall to the camp of those who are eager to improve the craft. Although, I am definitely imperfect with my grammar and diction and I am fully aware of my mistakes. However, I always believe that it is a must for me to correct myself and I should do my best in order to commit minimal mistakes in my write ups because it isn't really enough that my readers could understand what I wrote, but instead I must bare in mind that not every person is willing enough to understand my mistakes. For me, writing should be done wholeheartedly so that you can create write-ups that are sensible, comprehensible, and maybe helpful.

I am imperfect with my gramnar too and that is why I get rejected when I send application to writing company.

Don't get discouraged. Keep reading good books and learning. We all start somewhere. Most writing companies give a grammar test so they do not spend a lot of time editing. Grammar is not the same as talent. It can be learned.

I agree with Ma'am Happy Lady. Don't get discouraged my friend. I, as per what I mentioned, is also an imperfect English speaker/user and what I do is to practice all the time. I also read some articles by others to compare my grammar structure. Grammar is definitely practice-able and you don't need to worry about getting a slow development because it's just normal, it's impossible to be the best in just one day, you have to work for it. God bless you mate and I hope the best for you.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The easiest and fastest way to improve grammar is by reading books. No one can say their grammar is perfect. Even some of the best writers often slip. One thing I learned about writing is you can make mistakes. Some do it by design. Others don't but readers won't judge you too harshly unless the mistakes are too many that they find it difficult to understand what they are reading.

I try as much as I could to ensure that I follow the rules and improve on the way that I write. The truth is that things doesn't always work the way that we desire when we push to just write. We should always be working on improving on several things when writing is pretty involved.

Exactly! With writing, you have to strive to improve on your work on daily basis because the world is of course not stagnant. So, when it comes to your writings, make efforts to improve your past work to meet the standards of the current market.

I think of it a different kind of art. It is something that everyone can do and everyone can try, but not everyone knows how to get the audience eye.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Exactly! Most of the time we write any kind of articles, they are meant for a particular set of reading audience and it's the duty of the writer to do everything within his or her power to make sure that the message passed through the content is well and easily understood.

Writing isn't an easy thing to do, so I treat every writing works I have like a craft. Sometimes I even treat it as masterpiece if I'm confident that it is something that stands out and unique. If I write I always make sure that it is worth it because I render time, effort and resources for it. So I don't just write as I just I want it but with a good purpose.

I think being a writer is one of the hell you can do. Why? It is because you need to search, read and learn from every time you have a chance. Then writing is can consider this as a communication meaning is to share to others. Writing, is sharing your decades of learning to make it good or satisfactory to the receipient/readers. So every matters is need to be consider like grammar.

I think that writing is an art which does involve a lot of skill. One can be a very good writer but he can be effective only when he can write skillfully. If you want to become a successful writer then you need to develop the necessary skills in order to last long in this profession. When a writer is able to communicate well with his audience through his work then he becomes successful. If you don't have the proper skills to write in a way that is appealing to the readers then you wont be able to last long in this carrier.

I believe most of the writers treat writing as a craft. It's just that, not everyone is gifted with the skill to write. As long as you love what you are doing, I think it can be considered as a craft even though the outcome is not that good. A craft doesn't have to be technically made but could be purely done with full effort and heart. Some writers still have a good content even though their writing skills are bad. Anyway, skills could be learned. There has been no harm on trying or struggling to learn new things. There will be always a room for improvement for everyone. I personally treat it as a craft but I doubt my writing skills. Even though, I still love what I'm doing and I think that's the most important part.

Writing is my craft. I treat writing as my craft and a form of expression of myself. It is not problem if you don't have perfect grammar or great writing skills, for me, what is important is the heart. You can train yourself to do these things. You can study grammar and the English language as long as you have the interest to do it . You can improve your craft everyday, There is no stop for improvement. If you love what you do, you'll develop your craft to the best of your abilities.

I treat writing as a craft. I consider myself as an average when it comes to writing. I don't think I'm good enough yet. When I read someones writing or just heard someone who's really good, I easily get impressed and tell myself that I want to be like them. For that reason, I write to improve my writing skills little by little. I know I can't drastically improve in a short span of time, but I know that by practicing to write, I would eventually improve.

When you write in an artistic manner, that's when it is called craft or your master piece. Writing is an art and take time to learn how to write great stories that one day it would be a master piece where you could be proud of. writing stories that filled with emotions is a craft. Writing a diary a can be a craft depending on how a writer do it or it can just be an ordinary and plain story depending on how you write.

Writers start from the very basic in writing. May it be descriptive or what ever it is that is plain and simple and in the end when a writer knows how to write in artistic manner that's when it becomes a craft.

I treat it as a craft. It's something that one can be good at more than others. But it's also a learned skill that can be improved as time goes by. There are many books on how to improve one's writing. You simply have to read and write regularly to gradually excel in this art form.

I treat writing as a craft because it is something that is very creative that has came from your own idea and your own will to write. Yes you can have an inspiration to write something or get an idea but yet again YOU are the writer and a good writer produces well great content and for people to enjoy reading. It's a special gift to write for me because you are showing a whole new platform of ideas or adding an idea to a platform that has already been created.

Besides write to spread information, one also has to care about the craft of writing, such as grammar, the language used in different situation, flow of the story etc. These require constant reading and learning from the writers' side in order to improve the impact and clarity of one's writing. Therefore, writing is a craft to me.

I think so long as your spelling is correct anything kind of goes. What are convention grammar rules. In my opinion they keep changing. Where do you put commas? Is they a universal standard? If there is I would like to know. I think that because it is so subjective anything should go. When I'm writing I try to spell correctly and use correct grammar and punctuation. I even google some of this terms however they are also contracting opinions. My standard is that so long it is understandable then I'm okay, I'm not really bothered with the 'rules'.

I would agree on some statements here that writing is a craft since it involves creativity and skills in making a good article. It requires patience and determination to succeed. A person who writes with no regard for grammar rules should not consider himself a writer. Of course typos that are missed out of error can be forgiven, as it is only human to make such mistakes. However, to intentionally overlook the rules because you feel your readers will understand you anyway, and to call yourself a writer after that is just plain disrespectful to the craft.

Hey there!
To answer your question, yes. I do. Grammar has an important role to play in all.
In reality, I believe, that almost any writing is craft that someone puts their soul into it. Even some plain news about a tree falling somewhere. It's not generated by a robot.
