Why modern copywriters must have basic SEO skills

The industry in which I work is full of experienced of copywriters, but very few of them actually have standard or at least basic SEO skills.

Why modern copywriters must have basic SEO skills
Having no SEO skills means I will have to do the SEO research for them, like checking out competitors and doing keywords research and analysis. After doing this I need to instruct the copywriter for what keywords and expressions to use and how the structure of the article must take form.

This is highly infective and time-consuming and at the end of it all, the article needs again an SEO revision from me because most of the times the copywriter had poorly understood my requirements, so I pretty much end up writing the whole article myself.

Copywriters must learn to:

  • research on their own
  • use specific tools to find good keywords on their own
  • analyze the competitors
  • look at search results to figure out what Google wants and needs from certain niches.

It's really not that hard to learn a couple of tools and do a little research. And I believe this is essential, because by doing everything themselves, they'll create much better content because they understand the whole picture, instead of relying on SEOs to give them guidance, no matter how much and how detailed my instructions would be, they'll still going to miss some points, creating mediocre content at best.

What do you think about content writers and learning basic SEO?

If you want to be a successful copywriter then yes I believe you need to have basic SEO skills. I have been blogging for a while now and I am now a full time blogger and content creator. I do almost everything for 3 websites myself and over the years I have learned a lot of skills.

I can now clearly see how writing for SEO has increased my website traffic and increased my website rankings significantly. Writing for SEO and in an engaging way for your audience is truly a very valuable skill.

Something as simple as just finding a low competition keyword that has decent traffic can be a massive game changer! Just 5 minutes of keyword research is all it can take.

Yes, Lynne, that's good work you're doing! It means at least your are trying to take a piece of that organic pie, a lot of writers out there believe their work is just perfect and no SEO research is needed. That's wrong on so many levels and in a few years they'll have to evolve or quit writing altogether since this slowly but surely will become a MUST have the skill for any content builder out there.

Also, understanding social media is a not big skill all writers must have! You need to have all of this in mind!

Yes of course.

I mean there are some articles I need to write and I have to get the content out there, but I just can't find a decent keyword out for it and maybe if I spent more time and effort with researching it more then I would but some articles I write because I have a message to tell. It is not really about getting organic traffic, if you know what I mean.

That is very much true for my addiction blog, sometimes I just write without any thought of SEO and you know what? That website rocks with organic traffic, especially considering I haven't even published anything for about 6 months LOL.

But a lot of those articles were well researched with regards to keywords and SEO. Even if I don't do great keyword research I still put relevant information in titles, headings, alt tags etc so I have done some SEO on it.

Anyone that has their own website, blog or forum or just works for one of those should really have some basic search engine optimization skills. It is extremely important nowadays because your search engine ranking could make a huge difference. It could bring you a lot more traffic and that could help bring you some extra revenue. Plus if you have basic search engine optimization skills, then you don't have to waste time researching how to improve SEO every single time and you can concentrate more on the actual content of your post

Analyzing the competitors is one good way of keeping yourself up to date with the trends. If your competitor is using the old school then so be it. But once they have changed their style then you need to check on it for you may be left behind with the new features of software or platforms. Continually checking the search results will give you an idea of how things go with search engines.

It is important for copywriters to have SEO skills. This will help them to know for which group of people to write and how the article must be presented to persuade this group. SEO is not only important for copywriters but for freelancers, website owners, and bloggers. When I started my online journey 9 years back I was totally unaware of SEO. I started learning about SEO when I created my first blog. Learning SEO is not difficult. You just need to effectively use those SEO skills to grow your business or website.

I agree that having SEO skills is an absolute must. How do you begging writing without keywords? Your article or email maybe good and even be able to convert your calls to action, but how do you attract the right audience to view both?SEO. I also think that you need SEO skills even if you outsource this part of keyword research. They are many people out there claiming to be SEO experts, but this is not true. You need to be able to identify them otherwise you will be wasting your money.
