There are many ways to improve your writing skills, one of them is mentioned in your post, reading. Reading has the sole purpose of expanding knowledge by using your eyes and mind. It will develop your skills and expand your knowledge about what you want to know. Try reading some tutorials or books on how to write a better description if you are writing fiction, or how to write formal words if it's more into academic and technical writing. There are tons of books out there, and besides, the internet is a big help wherein you can just search it yourself and you will find tons of answers.

I think that reading, as others have mentioned here, is an absolute MUST when it comes to improving one's writing. Reading expands our vocabulary and also shapes our inner voice, our inner thought patterns with language, which in turn shape our outward expressions of language in our writing and content. I also think that it is very important to try to achieve objectivity when it comes to our own writing. We need to strive to become better self-editors and revisers of our work. This takes time and patience, because we have to achieve a distance from our rough drafts in order to properly see what needs to be fixed about them. We must write constantly to improve, and we also must learn from our past mistakes in our writing and try not repeat them as much as possible as we go forward creating new content.

Absolutely true! Anyone that wants to improve on writing, must be a good reader first. Many people may think, why do I have to be reading, when I want to be writing and that's it? Well honestly, how do you think your writing will look like, with thousands of grammar mistakes, that won't give any sense when you read them, and will show your low interest on education? Remember, when you write something, that would be read for someone, and you want to express your feelings, thoughts, and opinions, but you want to show you know how to write like an educated person too.

Improving your writing skills is not as instant as we think. Improving writing skills requires times so that you can improve it. You don't need to be a professional writer in order to write good written materials or blogs but all you have to be is to be knowledgeable enough about the topic you are writing.

When you are writing something it is also advised that you read books a lot so that you may put lot of information related to the topic you are writing. You will be a good writer if the one that reads something that you have written will understand the thought and the message you want to impart to them.

Right, Reading books will help a lot, and you will get some ideas how the writer use some words specially those deep words and become familiar to this. Reading some articles, or blogs will give you also a lot of information and ideas.

Yeah, I love to read some E books, and sometimes this wattpad is my pastime if I stuck in traffic. Well I'm just getting some info how they construct the sentence, and the proper use of grammar. Because you know, English is not my primary language, so, I really need to study more and reading will help me a lot.

I would also suggest reading old books to get acquainted with archaic and sometimes obsolete words that can still come handy in some writing jobs.
It's always best to learn and familiarize yourself with all of the words in the English language, from the olden ones to the modern ones. Having a good vocabulary is priceless in the writing field.

Improving how to write has got many different opinions and one thing is that I have no blames for those that got such opinions for what worked for person A might turn out not to work for person B. To me, I always see continuous writing as a means to getting better at what we write. The reason being that it is by practice that we become perfect. Also, making research before we write is very important as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida,
I think that you make a really good point here--the writing process is fiercely individual and so different for all of us; ultimately, each person eventually has to find his or her own way in this process through lots of trial and error. I am not sure that there is such thing as a "perfect" writer, but with practice, we can all definitely get better at our craft and at our content creation. I think that getting really good at the skills of editing and revision is key--we have to find ways to become objective about our work enough to see our possible and evident mistakes and then fix those before we post our writings.

I am also a reader but I needed practice to enhance my written English. That is the main reason why I got into freelancing. When I thought about joining forums, why not? It's just like talking and reading their posts is just like listening. Okay, that's how the forum works and I think I like it. From thereon, I was greatly improved with my grammar and sentence construction that my writing is not that boring anymore. And it's all because of the forums.

Corzhens,
I have been teaching English, on the college level, for over fifteen years, and I still have tons of errors to correct in my work when I write. I had TWO typos on a worksheet I handed out today in class, and I must admit, I am pretty embarrassed about it. I created the worksheet quickly, but I DID proofread it, and I still missed these two minor things. Well, I am only human, of course. I have also learned to edit my work more and to enjoy having people reading my work and commenting on it on the forums.

Picking up new words is one way. Always treat your brain like a willing receptacle to new verbiage. Also practice writing as often as possible, practice makes perfect when it comes to most things.

Aside from reading, I also watch a lot of movies and TV shows. I pick up a lot of new concepts, along with new words while being entertained. I sometimes turn the subtitles on when the dialogue gets too deep just to analyze it.

I think reading is essential to becoming a better writer.

A lot of the time, I start to feel like my writing is getting stale. I start to lose creativity and I feel like my sentence structure becomes dull and uninspired, like a middle schooler writing a History essay. Usually I can refresh and replenish my creativity reserves by reading the work of other writers. It helps me add something to my writing style to make it interesting again.

Same with movies and television shows. I can be watching something and just come up with a new idea on the spot based on something I just saw. Inspiration strikes anywhere.

Yeah, when you've done stuff for a while, it's normal for things to feel too repetitive. It helps if you take inspiration from books of varying genres or when watching movies/TV shows from different cultures as well.

How do you get better at a sport? Or at playing an instrument? Or at drawing? The most important factor is to practice, of course! Your practice writing doesn't even have to be serious. You can just go onto a forum somewhere or write in your journal, and that is good enough so long as you do so with the intent to write as well as possible. Another obvious way to get better is to read more. By reading the works of other great writers, you'll be able to pick up on their writing styles and integrate it into your own work.

Write, write, write. I'm still an awful writer, but when I have an idea for a story or something, I start writing down and outline and try to piece it together to the best of my abilities. I don't think you can improve unless you actively devote time and effort into seriously improving on the craft.

I'm lucky enough to be taking a masters level storytelling course at my university this semester, and I'm learning a lot about fiction writing. Take free online courses or look at YouTube tutorials on how to improve your writing!

The thing is, there's a lot of magazine sites that pay good money for long articles, I'm trying my best to get my articles approved but it seems, I still need a lot of practice.

I definitely agree with this. I think it doesn't even matter all that much as to what kind of writing you do, but to just sit down and actually do some kind of writing. I've found that so long as I'm doing some kind of writing, my skills in general continue to improve. Obviously narrowing down your writing practice to a specific type helps, but just writing in general is conducive to improvement. It's much like how it doesn't matter what you read, whether it is novels or comic books, reading in general improves reading skills. I've found that if I don't go for an extended period without any sort of writing practice, my skills seem to degrade in general.

Keep in mind that it is not practice that causes improvement, it is feedback. You can do something wrong a million times and never get any better. You need some way to tell what you are trying to achieve and whether you are getting closer to it. In terms of writing this normally means getting feedback from a relevant expert. For example by submitting to markets and seeing go you get a response, R&R, or acceptance.

Reading the right stuff is important because good books or articles doesn't just train you to use words effectively, they also feed your mind. It also helps a lot to practice writing by writing as frequently as possible. The more I write, the easier it gets. It also helps a lot to read blogs or articles aimed specifically at improving one's grammar or writing skills. I wish I can attend workshops to boost my skills but time constraints make it impossible at this point. I would really love to attend a script writing workshop.

I think reading is what's shaped my writing today. I used to read a lot of classic literature during my early college days, and I think that really shows in the way that I write (and sometimes speak) as well. And really, what better way to learn than to study and observe what others have done before you? Especially people who know what they're doing and are distinguished in the field of writing?

You can improve your writing by trying to write as much as possible and being able to identify errors. Watching movies and TV shows can also help a lot. And as you've mentioned, reading a lot of books can help expand your vocabulary. Make sure to find the meaning of every word that you don't understand through a dictionary. It is also better if you carry a thesaurus book with you.

What worked for me is by reading a lot of books and works of literature. By doing so, I can understand the perspective of the reader and the style of writing that was used. Books have their own different writing style given that the writers are their individual selves. By reading their books, I can get a grasp of what they think which is a valuable piece of knowledge as a writer.

I quite agree with you on the need to read lots of books when one is aiming to improve as a writer. One more thing that I have come to realize is that when we read books of great writers, it tends to affect the way we write even without putting in so much work to imitate them.

Regardless of the specific method you choose to improve your writing, you should aim to set clearly defined goals and expectations.

Having goals that work in your favor make a gargantuan task like improving your writing much easier to see consistent improvement. The goals that you set should be specific enough that you can clearly identify the aspect of your writing that you’re trying to improve. To do that, it helps to have a clear target for what you’re shooting for; specific examples and expert writing from the field you’re interested in are perfect for this.

The other part is about keeping your expectations tempered. It takes a long time and a great amount of effort to improve at any craft—writing is definitely no exception. It’s important that when you set goals, you've got to go for something that’s just barely out of your reach.Go too far, you likely won’t learn anything, and you’ll find yourself frustrated and disillusioned.

No, practice won’t make you perfect. Practice will make you better. It's all we can strive for.

NotTheSinger,
This is a very insightful post here, and I really like what you are saying. One of my goals is to pinpoint and identify the grammar and punctuation errors which I tend to make the most often, and then always edit my work for those specifically so that when I do post content it is error-free. I do not think that there is any such thing as the "perfect writer", and it is a lifelong process becoming the best writer that you can be. Your ideas of "improving" and "tempering" here are great because writing can be frustrating, and if you give it too much friction you can become prematurely frustrated or run into a serious bout of writer's block.

It is difficult to be good in writing or composing. It really requires skills and passion. Although, there are many ways to improve your writing. One of this is by watching different genres of movies. While you are watching a film, make sure you understand the whole story and most especially the coversations by different characters. In this way, your vocabulary will be broader. After you watch the film, you may write the whole plot of it or criticize it.

Second is by learning the General English itself. You need to be familiarized with basic topics such as transitive and intransitive verb, singular and plural, 1st, 2nd, 3rd person, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, tenses, clauses, subject verb agreement, and many more to mention. If you master this, it is easier for you to compose words, phrases, and paragraphs.

Third is by becoming a bookworm. The more books you have read, the better your writing skills will improve. You just have to imitate an author and make your style different.

Fourth is by criticizing other's work. In this way, you will be able to critic which was wrong or not.

Lastly, make it a habit that before sleeping at night, you need to write at least 300 word paragraph. As soon as you are progressing, make the word count higher than 300. Be creative and imaginative. Always consult a professor or someone who can be expert in this field and ask them to criticize it in order for you to improve.

Happy writing! How do you improve your writing skills?

Watching movies with English subtitles and reading have definitely helped me in improving my writing skills. I have improved my grammar and vocabulary considerately by reading books, magazines, and newspapers on a daily basis. I agree @Pixie06. Reading definitely helps to improve your writing skills because it helps you with your sentence structure and gives you ideas for your own writing. I would advise you to read books as well as articles, especially because today conversational writing more than technical writing is the norm. Another tip is to practice, practice and more practice! The more you write, the better you get at writing. It's like learning how to drive or riding a bicycle. The more you do it the better you get at it.

My suggestion on how to improve one's writing skills is to try composing long articles. And the way I do it is by researching the topic first then after getting all the relevant facts in several paragraphs, I then build on it and after writing the correct length I start editing and proofreading it until I get it right. Doing this builds up your skill in writing.

There are many ways on how to improve your writing skills. The first thing I do is through reading books and articles. In that way, I can explore various sentences and words that I can use in writing. You should have dictionary with you so that if ever there are words that you don't clearly understand, you will be able to find out the meaning or definition of the words. What I did also is I keep on writing and practicing based on my experiences. I used to express my thoughts and feelings since I have been through a lot of suffering lately. I don't really express my thoughts to my friends so one of the things I do if I have a problem is through writing and drawing. Sometimes music also expresses my feelings and emotions. I will write some poet and lyrics and put a tune and melody on it. After that I will sing it with my guitar. Sometimes I even record it on my phone. It really helped me improve my writings through writing songs but of course a search is a must for grammar check. It's really up to you how, as long as you enjoy writing, then you can practice it in many forms and ways.

A good way of improving your writing skills is by vocalizing your piece and recording it in your smartphone; Then by listening to your recording you would be able to assess it's quality and also you can compare it to your other recorded pieces. By doing this you'll be generating audio files that you could listen to anywhere and anytime.

Kakashi,
I don't really use my Smartphone for this, but i can say that, once you have written something, if you read it aloud to yourself, you will most likely "hear" things that need to be fixed in your content. Many of us are great speakers and articulate communicators, but, sometimes, when we go to write, we think we have written something that we actually have not--and there can be a disconnect there. It is important to understand the gaps between how we speak, how we think, and how we actually put things down in text! These can all be three very different things!

My golden rules on improving my writing is read, write, read, then write again. There will be no other tips for me than reading and writing. Reading will help you see someone's style of writing and how they can create a good one. It is like learning by their writings. And writing will help you master your art. As you do passionately one thing, you will become on that certain thing that you do. So if you will just continue on writing no matter what, you will probably end up with a good writing skills in the end. Good luck. How do you improve your writing skills?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think the best way is by writing daily, doing this would practice and enhance your writing skills and speed. It's best to write 500-750 word articles at first because it's easier to correct and edit, you could pick a subject that you are comfortable with. Just write one article per day but the trick is you have to write it in just one sitting only.

Kakashi2020,
I agree with you here, yet once again, but for some reason, your post also made me think of another great way to improve our writing skills--we should all try to build a community of people--if possible--even if it is one or two readers--who are willing to help us proofread and edit ourselves, and we could to the same for them. Another person can sometimes catch your mistakes in your content way better than you could with an objective read. In poetry and fiction circles which I write in, we try our best to establish an editing community which helps all of us out!

Having the proper motivation to write is an important factor in improving one's writing skills. I know that this is true because I write horribly at times when I'm lacking motivation. Motivating oneself or finding inspiration in writing can dramatically improve one's writing skills.

Kakashi2020,
You bring up another interesting issue here regarding our writing endeavors--sure, we all have punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors--also, it seems from this forum that many of us make errors, such as "left out words", because we are all in such a rush to complete our writing tasks and goals on limited time every day! In any case, what you bring up is really interesting--if we are not properly motivated, then we will NOT create our best content or material. I hate that feeling when I feel as if I am doing an un-inspired project or just working on something with half of my attention or intent dedicated to it. I would wager that I make more errors when writing in that imperfect mode.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I usually make articles and writings from scratch, i make sure that these articles are checked by friends and family before it goes out to the public. Hearing their thoughts and comments is a great way to get pointers and inclusions for my writing and eventually improving my writing skills.

A trick I learned in my English class ages ago is to voice out what I'm writing, this could sound funny but it works for me. Sometimes when I write, I voice out what I'm writing, and reading it out not aloud but in a lower tone of voice, doing this would help me check the grammar and gives me a good flow in writing.

I think reading books is a great way of improving our writing skills. It familiarizes us on how authors or writers use words and on how they construct sentences. We unconsciously learn them even if we don't mean to. Reading fiction books like the Harry Potter series also teaches us on how to tell stories.

I must admit I'm not a good writer. English is not my native language but it's our 2nd language. I'm not a good student when I was studying so here I am struggling to learn again on how to be good at English writing. I've been learning in free lessons that offered in some sites but my favorite is Engvid they also offer free video lessons and make some tests after watching the videos. I also installed free grammar and spelling checker so I could be more familiar with spellings and correct grammar forms. I'm continuing to learn more and hopefully, by joining different forums, it could give me a chance to practice my writing skills to improve more.

I agree. You'll eventually get better at something when you invest time and effort on it. An effort to learn new things by reading and reading. It is also important to read some works from professional writers because it can help you easily get some tips and techniques to an effective and better writing skills. I do it whenever I feel so down in my writing style, but the most important detail on your work is the content. If you have a lot of information and you researched it well then it will eventually turned out to be good as long as you know how to construct your article to be an interesting to read.

I just want to share that reading should also be complemented by writing. While reading books is important in our overall improvement, actual writing solidifies it. We won't learn how to write well just by reading about it. We have to write stuff and learn from those mistakes.

Yes, I understand your point. Thanks for reminding me on this additional part of learning process. Well, I think that's true, reading should also be complemented by writing. I do learning by reading other writer's stuffs and I tried it on my won, or sometimes when I write I suddenly remember the way that writer used to write her articles or whatsoever it is. But that's a good point you've got there.

Sometimes its easy to lose sight of your main goal. Enjoying the process too much can slow your progress especially, if you're not aware of it. There may be some truth to the idea that if you're not struggling just a little bit, then you're doing it wrong.

Anyway, it's just a reminder for all of us to stay focused on improving ourselves. No one can master writing. But if we work hard enough, we might just make something truly worthwhile.

Well, I think I can easily point out some of our journalist here in my country who have been writing articles and it clearly shows how they forgot the main goal of informing the people on the current event news. Yes, those journalists got some great skills in writing but sometimes I find the content too misleading and quite has no substance.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's actually a great example. People do it without even knowing. The more time passes by, the more likely we are to forget our main objective. This is why we must never forget the true reason why we're writing.

I always try to learn a new word a day, it could be an old, archaic or obsolete word that can only be seen and read in old documents and books or newly invented words that has sprung up in the past decade.

For me to improve my writing skills I do a lot of studies and I read a lot. When I'm studying I really focus on grammar, I'm making sure that I perfectly studied and understood each point so that my articles will have an excellent grammar the next time I make an article. Reading is also helpful, reading allows me to identify how other writers used the words, names and some information. Also I was inspired and I learned what words to use or I learned how to select the words that I will use for my next article.

I am not fond of reading so I won't list that down here. I also don't like to write that much so that's invalid as well. I guess I made my writing skills improve by listening more so that I can think more when I am writing. Thinking makes anyone very creative and so I think a lot whenever I am writing. Listening actually helped me with my grammar and my fluency in terms of English language. However, it didn't help me that much with the proper punctuation and etc. so what I did was I practiced writing using the Microsoft Office Word because every time you commit a sentence fragment, they'll really underline that for you and so it helped me. However, I only do write there when I have school projects and assignment because again i am not fond of writing at all.

Attend trainings. Practice your skills all over again so that you can master the skills that you have. Read related articles about people who have the same skills as yours and if possible, ask them how they imrpove their talents.
There are times that our parents do the initiatives. Their children at their young age, they tend to let them attend trainings or tutorials so that when they grow up, they end up to be someone genius and professional in whatever field they are into.

A good way to better ones writing skills is by conversing with other writers and sharing with each other personal techniques which helped each one in their writing. By doing this a wealth of knowledge from different writers can be assimilated by everyone.

Good point. Well yes, aside from improving your writing skills through daily practice in writing, its opposite is also a good way which you mentioned about by conversing with other writers. Also, sharing ideas is one of the most effective way to build up something, it depends on what you're working on. I think we can say that after you learned something from the other writers of course the next step is to apply it by writing to check whether you absorb the knowledge you've just accumulated.

There's an old trick that my high-school English teacher thought me and it's to learn a new word everyday, and to try to use that word in both writing or in speech during the day, by doing so, I won't be able to forget the word. It's a cool trick that really works.

In my opinion, reading is always a good way to improve your skills. This also applies to writing skills. Reading a lot widens your vocabulary. It enables you to express yourself effectively. It won't be hard to find the words to say writing your thoughts. Apart from the vocabulary, reading lets you widen your knowledge on things. You would be able to discuss a topic on a detailed manner if you know the things that you are saying.

It is also a good idea to enroll your self to a writing seminar or workshop where you can learn different styles and proper writing techniques from professionals. It will enhance your writing skills further knowing the style you can use in varying topics when writing.

Practice. Reading, reading, and reading again.
I believe it has a big effect on how you develop your writing skills.
You'll have a progress in wider vocabulary and knowledge about anything, and that can help you write about whatever article you are writing.
I am also into watching English movies, those that I know that would help me widen my knowledge and English.
Try to practice writing about a certain topic whenever you have a free time. I think that would help a lot.

What I can recommend to improve writing skills is to read every day and watch English movies or documentaries. In that way one could develop a way of thinking about how you should react to some things around you and probably widen the vocabulary as well. So I guess these are the things to do to improve it and not only writing but also in speaking the english language.

To improve your writing skills, I'd recommend to read a lot of books for you to get more information and to have some ideas. Watching some movies or informational video about the topic that you're going to write has a big help. Explore your surroundings to have fresh ideas, get some advice from professional writers and just keep on trying until you satisfy yourself.

Reading will certainly improve your vocabulary. You don't want to write just to impress but it pays to be able to use the most suitable word to get your message across. The most important thing is to be understood correctly. I agree that watching movies also helps because the language used is more conversational and you hear the native speakers themselves speak or use the language. This is if you are writing in English language which is the business or international language anyway.
You can also take short courses to enhance or improve your writing techniques. Practice a lot and ask for feedback from writers or experts to improve your writing.

@Kakashi2020 I agree with you 100 percent. The number one way I know to improve your writing skills like with any other skill is to practice. We see that all the great athletes get better based on their training routine. I think that the same can be said about writing. The more you write, the better you get at it. I try to write everyday. The more I write the better I get at my sentence structure and my grammar. I also read everyday, this helps, I always have new and fresh ideas.

I believe that there are many workable and challenging ways to improve one's writing skill. Reading and learning the literary styles and uniqueness of known writers is one best way of improving writing skill. Learning or researching relevant topics before writing is another. Allowing others to objectively criticize one's writing is of great help. Honest personal evaluation and constant editing and revision will greatly improve if not perfect one's writing skill.

Reading different materials really helps. If you are into novels, read different authors, not just one or two, these authors have different voices and dfferent styles, Newspapers, read different ones, dabble into tabloids too. Magazines, different publications. I'm just saying that reading for the sake of reading is not enough, learning from different materials is the key, and of course, making your own personality and own voice as a writer, from all this learnings.
