8 Simple Steps to Become a Great Writer

Do you want to be a better writer period? Wish you could develop the skills that could go on to make you a great writer? Well you can! And to help you with that, here's 8 Simple Steps to Become a Great Writer. And all you really have to do is learn these steps, adopt and apply them to your own life and eventually, you'll see how true they are and how much they are helping you to become a truly great writer!

1. Write 50 words. That's a paragraph.
Congrats! If you just wrote about 50 words down, that's a paragraph. Give yourself a pat on the back because some people can't even do that. But if you're writing anything, if you write just 50 words (a paragraph) a day. Then you are already well on your way to completing that article, essay, novel or even biography you're writing.

2. Write 400 words. That's a page.
Well done you you're on fire! If you've managed to complete a full page then you're really doing well for yourself! A lot of people struggle with just writing one or two paragraphs so to write a full page really shows you have what it takes to write full pages. Next stop, writing 300 pages..

3. Write 300 pages. That's a manuscript.
WOW! If you can write 300 pages then you really do have what it takes to make a place and name for yourself in the world as a writer, author and publisher! And by writing 300 pages (which might have taken a lot of doing) you would have inevitably learned a lot from that which will only go on to make you a better writer.

4. Write every day. That's a habit.
All great writers write every day. Even if it's just a few words in a notebook! But by writing everyday you'll be getting into the habit of it and you'll almost become an unstoppable force with a pen! Or a type writer or computer keyboard, whatever it is you use to write with!

5. Edit and rewrite. That's how you get better.
Just like Ernest Hemingway said in "The first draft of everything is shit." so will be yours, likely. And to improve that, you will need to proof read it and edit it. It's only after you have proof read and edited your articles or other writings that they truly get better.

6. Spread your writing for people to comment. That's called feedback.
Feedback is very important if you want to become a great writer. For without it you can't know if your writing style or vocabulary meets peoples satisfaction or not. So you should spread out your writing and allow room for people to comment on it. These comments and feedback is a surefire way to improve your writing skills.

7. Don't worry about rejection or publication.
Rejecting and criticism will always come no matter how well you write or how brilliant or excellent a writer you are. But don't let it put you off from picking up that pen! If you enjoy writing and it's in your blood, then that is what you was born for regardless to what people say or think.

8. When not writing, read. Read from writers better than you. Read and Perceive.
Yes! All writers read when they're not writing. But when you're not writing, read instead, this will not only improve your writing skills but give you a bigger, better vocabulary which will go on to make you a better, greater writer! Pretty much like this, if you want to be a better player, play people that are better than you. If you want to be a better writer, read from writers that are better than you. You'll pick up their skills! 8 Simple Steps to Become a Great Writer

Great tips as always Mike! Now this is what I need. Reading these tips made me realize that I shouldn't be skeptical when it comes to writing. One thing that pulls me back from writing for even just an e-Book, is that I might not impress the reader and they might regret buying or patronizing my product for some reason. I know that I should take that as learning experience but I guess I am not yet ready to face one. :/

I have jot down your tips in my notepad. I used to write 700 words per article at Hubpages but stopped when I was absorbed into Literacybase , 500 words per article, was earning good money until it stopped paying. Now, I will have to go back to Hubpages and start writing again.

When I started writing, my idea was the same, that I write words to make sentences and that’s it. But I later realized that writing is not that simple. You have to impart something relevant to the subject matter and interesting to the readers too. And after all is said and done, there comes the review and editing. This is the most critical part because some writers tell me that there were times they had to dump the article for it cannot be improved just like hitting a dead end. The review and edit of your own writing is the final test on whether your manuscript is fit to be published or not.

You make it sound very easy. I think this is the mentality we all need to have. Writing is no piece of cake, but we simply need to get on with it. The first step is to just write something and to learn as you go. Most people wait to be perfect before they begin, but that's not possible. In my experience learning comes from doing and making a thousand mistakes and self- correcting. So just write something, anything and you will get the hang of it eventually.I also agree that writing should become a habit. Do it everyday, whether as a job or as a hobby.Statistics suggest readers also make the best writers! It helps if you have something to write about.

Your fifth point is very important for anyone planning to become a great writer. The thing I always tell my pals that are planning to become writers is that they really need to write everyday and always edit to see mistakes that abound in what they wrote. This form of personal examination is necessary for any one to get better. Also, the rule of 50 words being a paragraph was what I never knew all along and to notice that today is quite informative. So, from today onward, I get to count the number of words I write on each article.

Any subject matter is interesting enough if it was written by someone who actually knows what the subject matter is and knows how to write effectively. When writing, especially when you're just starting, focus on your interests and experiences. Not only will it make it an easier time for you to express your thoughts, but your actual output would also feel more sincere and readers can relate more when reading something written from the heart.

I've always been afraid of rejection, even though I've been writing for a while I still don't have that confident to approach websites that pays writers because I am afraid that I won't get it.
