Online Transcription - Have you tried it?

Aside from Data Entry job, another good online freelancing job is Transcription or Transcribing. It is a kind of job wherein you would listen to an audio or video clip and then writing everything that you hear from that certain clip. It also depends on what your client needs as well. Some may want to have you write everything that you hear and see specially the minor details, and some just want to know the specific words or conversations.

Mind you, this job can get very challenging though. This requires sharp and attentive minds and good ears! Literally good hearing is needed although there are softwares provided that would let you control the audio or video such as lowering it's speed, increasing the volume or panning the stereo channel.

Is this job your forte? Are you interested in trying this kind of job? Or have you tried it already? If so, how did it go? I would love to hear your opinions and experiences!

P.S. Please, only informative ones.

I have not heard of this yet or considered it, but I think this is a cool idea, and I think I maybe might be able to type fast enough to do it. I wonder how well these jobs pay. Are most of them in English? Could you maybe list some of the sites that you saw this opportunity on? I might be interested in trying this out, actually. Good post, as usual, and thanks for sharing yet another freelancing possibility with us.

It really depends on what site you're working for as to how much you make. I worked a little bit for a company called Speechpad, and they payed around $0.25 per audio minute. So if an audio file was 4 minutes long, you'd make $1.00 off of it. Granted, a 4 minute file would probably take you upwards of 10 minutes to type and format according to the company's standards. Sometimes clients want you to put time markers and speaker tags and things as part of the transcript.

When I was doing a lot of transcription, I found that I made the most money from a site called Rev. I did a little transcription through them, but I was primarily a captioner. I would watch videos, type out the dialogue in them, and then line them up with the audio. The way Rev works is that you're graded on your captioning and transcription jobs, and once you caption or transcribe the required amount of media, and if your metrics are good, you'll increase in rank and be able to earn more per audio minute there.

I logged on today and there about 50 transcription jobs available and 50 captioning jobs, and the flow is generally pretty good. So for transcription at Rev, I earn about $0.40 per audio minute, so $4.00 for a 10 minute clip as shown below.

I haven't transcribed regularly in about a year, but here are my earning from 2016 when I was doing a lot of captioning:
Online Transcription - Have you tried it?

Really, you can make some good earnings if you're dedicated and doing it regularly. I dropped off of doing transcription because of school and my full time job. It's kind of stressful because once you claim a job, there's a time limit that you have to have the file submitted by, and it's hard for me to allot enough time to do several of them in a day, unfortunately.

This looks really good to me, and right now, at least, I have some free time because I am only teaching from home and online classes right now. I will check out Rev and see how it goes for me. Do you have to have any special software or set-up in order to do the captioning? I am curious.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
You definitely should! You'll have to take a grammar and punctuation test as well as do a test captioning/transcription job, but I would be surprised if you didn't pass those with flying colors.

I did not have any special software or set-up to do any of their work. All transcription and captioning is done through their online platform which you'll be trained on once you start working with them. I learned the hotkeys on the keyboard for different commands in the software which made things easier, but that was it.

If you get really serious about transcription, you could get a foot pedal that you can use to issue commands to the software instead of having to use the keyboard for that.

Thanks a lot for the tip on those sites. I definitively would like to try, also, do you know of any site that works with Translations? I can do both English and Spanish, and also a little bit of Brazilian Portuguese, so that is something I want to try out. So far, I've tried a site where you have to listen phone calls, and then some of them require a brief summary, but earning is not a good as I thought, so I'm looking for something more well payed.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Unfortunately, I do not know of any sites that work with translation. I only know the basics of Spanish and Japanese, so translation work is not really an option for me.

From a quick google search, however, it looks like Upwork, Fiverr, and Guru.com are great places to start for freelance translation work. Good luck!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Thanks again TheArticulate, for sure I will check on those, and the other ones you suggested. Whenever you feel ready for practicing/learning Spanish, feel free to ask, I'm Spanish native speaker, so I can help you improve on it. Not the same with Japanese, I would love to learn it, but seems pretty abstract and complicated, and I have no teachers around to help me learn it.

It's definitely good for someone like you who has some free time to do this. I doubt that it would be very good as a full-time job as it could get very boring after a while especially with the added challenge of having trouble sometimes to write down correctly what is being said. I don't think you need any special software for it. Just make sure you have some good earphones to ensure you hear everything correctly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Everything you said is spot on. It's not difficult work unless you have an audio or video file that's difficult to understand. It can be very tedious and boring, which is why I don't do as much transcription or captioning anymore.

The nice thing about it is that it's easy for people to jump into, because just like you said, it doesn't require any special software. Almost all of the jobs I've done have either had an online platform where I did all my work, or I just submitted a Word document to the company for them to send to the client.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

peachpurple
Yeah this job is not really that hard if you could just concentrate on the audio and write them out in words. There is one site called Humanatic with the similar process. A few of my Mylot friends had heard $12 per day just for this site. However, the paypal account has to be verified which mine isn't as I have not link mine to credit card yet.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ballyhara
Humanatic offers transcription, but not in all the options. You have to unblock previous categories, in order to have access to the transcription ones. That can take quite some time, and also it requires a lot of your time so you can see the results. More often than not, you will find the terrible surprise your unblocked categories have no calls, or they are payed in a very low rate. So, it's an option but the great one.

Actually transcription is a form of a data entry job, it is listening to audios whether it be conversation of two people, a call recorded or an interview. I'm planning on getting that kind of job, and hopefully I'll get one.

Some numbers on your payroll look kinda interesting, but I still think the time spent on this kind of work is - unfortunately - poorly paid.

In my opinion, it's not worth the investment because there are other better and faster ways to earn money by using interent.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Perhaps for someone who doesn't have much experience with it, but like most avenues, if you spend time improving your craft, you can earn decent money.

Take the metrics I posted for example: In that time period I transcribed about 300 minutes worth of audio and video files. On average, for every minute of audio, it would take me about 4 or 5 minutes to transcribe it. So essentially 5 times the length of the audio file.

So if I multiply the roughly 5 hours of material by a factor of 5 to account for the time I spent transcribing and then divide my earnings of $157.66 by 25 hours, I come up earning just over $6 and hour.

Not quite minimum wage in the U.S., but not bad considering this is something that doesn't require any difficult skills to do. All you need to be able to do is type what you hear and maybe sync it up with video. Certainly better earnings than most will make forum posting or writing for content mills I think.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
You are correct, it can be relatively profitable. This is a vision of who is outside this game. I don't particularly have enough time to invest in something like this, so... This is not exactly a beach for me.

I'd rather surf in other ways for now, haha!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
I don't blame you one bit! There's a reason I don't much transcription or captioning anymore. I earned more doing it than other online avenues at the time, but it's just really time consuming and monotonous, which turned me off after a while.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think these are exactly two of the reasons that discourage me from wanting to participate in sites with these types of works. I know that my interest in them would disappear in a blink of an eye.

But thanks for the tips anyway.

These are really awesome informations and very tempting but I don't think this is for me. I mean, I've done this before and I just can't, for some reasons. One thing that I have realized when I did this sort of tasks is, don't take it lightly. If you want to go and do this job, you should be willing and must spend a lot of time just to get a hold of it because it won't be easy at first and it will require you a lot of time and it can be excruciating sometimes.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
It's stressful, that's for sure. Not only are you timed on the jobs you accept, but through Rev, your work is graded by more experienced people to make sure you're formatting everything correctly and spelling things right. So you're right, it's absolutely something you don't want to take lightly. If you don't score high enough after so many hours of work, you can be terminated!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ballyhara
That's one of my biggest concerns about it too. As a freelancer, I've noticed I don't take it lightly either, and that makes this job takes a lot of time from me to. Just like you, I'm looking for something that doesn't take so much time, but related to bilingual translation/transcription, because that's my forte.

I did try Speechpad and got no luck. Though I have not tried again to take the exams, for quite some time. Looking from what you have earned this site is pretty good one. I am motivated to try again.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Speechpad is okay, but I've found that they don't pay you as well as Rev. Especially if you get good marks at Rev and become a Revver, you can make significantly more per audio minute than at Speechpad.

The the thing about Speechpad that I did like was that you could just the transcription in your own word processing program, label the speakers, and then submit it that way. I think that made the process a bit more streamlined for me.

Thank you for this information. I just took a test and have to wait for the result within this week. I hope I can pass the test so I can earn more. Wew! this is my first time and I can say that I took an hour to finish the test but thankfully I was able to try this one.

Much luck to you! I haven't done much transcription work for them in a long while, but I'll still go to their jobs list occasionally to see if there are any captioning jobs available. From what I've seen recently, they're still going strong and offer a lot of jobs for Revvers to work on. The only problem I've found is that a lot of the videos and audio files have awful quality, and it's hard to make out what people are saying in them.

It makes me nervous to transcribe because I don't want my rating to be hit because I couldn't understand the audio very well.

I haven't tried this transcription yet but I knew a little bit about this thing where you write or type those conversation between either one or two person. For me it is pretty difficult to do this task but depend if a person are great doing this thing so he or she are able to do this task easily.

Me too, I mean I just passed on one of the audio transcription sites out there but I haven't started working on one audio, I just listen to the sample ones and find it somewhat easy or hard like a 50/50 rating on every audio. Maybe I just need to allocate 2 hours to just finish the 10 minute audio. But I still prevent myself from starting one haha I guess I have the feeling of getting bored with it with just one audio because I really think it would consume my time overtime.

I have not experience this yet. I have heard and watched a video about this. I didn't try this yet because I don't have an earphone yet. I was looking for my earphone. Its just today that I have seen it.

If given the chance to be informed and trained on transcribing. I believe I will also be able to perform it. I think its just simply listening to what they are saying and writing it down. I will be glad to do this soon.

I have heard medical transcription can be a lucrative avenue, although I know nothing about how fruitful the field is for freelancers. It sounds like a nice way to make a few bucks, though. I would imagine most of the work for this field is either highly technical or very tedious if it merits having the information recorded in another medium. There may be ancillary opportunities for learning through doing this type of work that could lead to ideas for your own blog.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Tronia
That is true. There's one company that I know of but I never applied myself, that specialises in medical and court transcription. I was once curious and I visited their site but I didn't bother because I don't think that you have a chance if you're a beginner. The expert areas have a lot of terms and profession specific words that you need to learn and know. To even get asked to join them you need to pass a pretty tough test that consists of three or four different transcription audios in the medical field.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Yeah, medical transcription (and translation) pays well, and if you have a medical background you can easily find jobs online, but I agree that it is pretty technical.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
I've heard of some sites (through some friends) that work that way, but I've never been tempted to work with them because I think it must be something very annoying (especially after some work time) and the "wages" to be paid don't seem to be fair considering the work that needs to be done.

Maybe I'm wrong (as I said, I've never tried), but this idea resembles a telemarketing job where only the customer talks to you and you can't do anything but just listen.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I did a lot of captioning and transcription work at the end of 2016 for a company called Rev, and that was the best money I made with online freelancing, I think. The work is time consuming and tedious (you're going to hear the same people's voices and repeatedly listen to them say the same thing again and again sometimes), but if you can get really fast at typing and formatting your transcripts, you could make a lot of money doing it.

In general, after everything was said and done, on any given project I was probably earning about $6 an hour or so doing caption work for Rev. Not quite minimum wage, but for an online job where I can work from home and whenever I please, I'll take that if I can get it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Tronia
I have tried transcription before and what I have found out is that basically, most companies offer you extremely low pay for the amount of work you have to do. Even though that I have around 96 WPM typing speed, typing is not a problem - it is the audio files that they upload. I have heard so many bad ones where you could literally not understand a single word. Sometimes there's weird buzzing or background noises or you get a foreigner that has a very thick accent and can't form a proper word Online Transcription - Have you tried it? but I think that there a few transcription companies that are very good and do pay decently considering you're a freelancer and most likely don't have extensive experiences. You just have to eliminate bad from the good ones!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
You've outlined the exact problems as to why I don't do much transcription anymore. A lot of people on the audio files had thick accents, or the equipment they used to record the audio was low quality, which made it difficult to hear things.

When the audio is bad or the people are hard to understand, it takes me several times longer to accurately transcribe the audio, which makes my earning less and less.

However, I did some captioning through a company a while ago and I found that most of the videos uploaded had good audio quality and easy to understand, because a lot of them were webseries or television series which had great production quality. That was some of the best money I ever made because of how clear the audio was. It wasn't odd for me to make about $5 or $6 an hour on a good day.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
There are some that pay decently, you just have to research beforehand. Freelancer sites sometimes give you a pretty bad copy of the audio, though, I agree, but the good transcription sites, in general, have very good audio quality.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DarthHazard
I have never tried it and I doubt I would because most of the times that I have seen this type of job, the reward for doing it is just not worth it. Plus I feel that it might be difficult sometimes depending on what the audio is. If the person doesn't talk as well or if they are mispronouncing words then it can become a problem because you might not be able to write it down correctly. You will also need to be a fast typer to allow you to do each job quickly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
There are actually good paying companies for online transcription but I agree that it is not for everybody since you have to allot your time just listening and trying to make out what they are saying especially for the slightly less than ideal audio recordings in some websites. There are also set transcription styles for each company/user that may be difficult to follow for some people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There isn't a lot of room for professional growth, but it's a good way of getting some money in the side. Although some of the sites available pay a bit too little for the time you're spending and the work you're doing, if you find the right site you and you type fast you can probably get 10 bucks per hour if they have jobs available. The problem is that when you get a full-time job you're likely going to stop having enough time to actually dedicate a full hour to transcription every day. I think that if you're confident at your writing abilities you can find better freelance job elsewhere.

For some people who think transcription is a simple job like other simple work-at-home job out there. Don’t let anyone fool you. As a beginner, training is a must. And, if you skip the training you will pay for it in one way or another.I’ve personally taken the free Mini-Course and I would encourage anyone thinking of venturing into transcription to do the same.
Another myth, you just sit on the computer and type what you hear. At least, that is what I thought when I started. I almost quit in the first month. You have to do a lot of research, especially business/financial transcription projects, for you to get the terminologies right. You sit for long hours and get fatigued most of the times.

So true. When I started this I spent almost all my time on the introduction because If you miss just a single chapter of that intro, you will then get confused on the remaining for the most part. But somehow I managed specially if you understand how things are going. This job literally takes a lot of time that's for sure. But one thing is for certain, once you get a hold of it and you notice yourself speeding up and knowing the curves, this will be a good sideline income for sure.

I'm a college student with a work study job that barely pays $100 a check (every two weeks). I do live on campus so I don't have to pay rent or utilities, but also don't have time for a part time job in addition to schoolwork. I like Rev for a little bit of extra money, even just to carry me to my next check. You really can't live off Rev, even if you advance all the way to Revver+, but I don't think it was made to be a full-time job. The pay could definitely be better, but the work isn't terribly hard and there isn't a minimum payout which I'm very thankful for. They pay every week through PayPal so you don't have to give any information but that and your first and last name if you're uncomfortable putting your personal info on the Internet. The only thing I'd change is the grading system, sometimes they mark you down harshly for small things. But overall, I'm very happy with the extra money no matter how little and believe it's great for college kids, stay at home parents, or anybody looking for flexible hours (literally you just work whenever you want) and a bit of extra cash. Just bookmark the Guideline site they provide you and you'll be fine!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Your reason for joining Rev is the same reason I did a year or so ago. I needed extra money while I was attending college, and I found Rev to be a pretty good source of spending money when I had the time.

They paid better than the content mills I was writing for or the survey sites I was using, but I found the work to be monotonous after a while, and more often than not, the audio files available for transcription were awful quality or hard to understand.

I think during my "prime" (if you want to call it that), I was earning somewhere in the ballpark of $5 to $6 an hour, which didn't seem too bad given I would work when I wanted, where I wanted, and on what jobs I decided. It's a good source for someone looking for a little income, but it's not a career by any means.

Is this job similar to Humanatic? I had friends who are working for that site where they listen to audio, choose the right message and get paid after approved. I have not tried that site yet because it requires verified paypal account but I don't have. How about Transcribeme? It it the same? My friends are earning well at Humanatic and they are doing great.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
I don't have any experience with Transcribeme, but I have used sites like Rev and Speechpad. Essentially, you choose an audio file to listen to, and you write down what each person in the video says, generally word for word if it's a verbatim job. Typically you use whatever online software the company provides, and then submit it afterwards. It's really a pretty simple process, just time consuming and boring at times if the audio subject matter doesn't interest you.

The only difficulties that might arise are if the person is hard to understand, the audio is bad quality, or if they're talking on a subject you're not familiar with and as a result don't understand all of the terminology they may be using.

I have actually applied for transcribe.me if that's the correct address. I have forgotten already since this was a few years back I believe. I got lazy on the orientation part specially on the final quarter wherein I would listen to samples and try to transcribe it. But I got literally pissed off when I couldn't understand the words those 2 people are saying on the background, plus the vehicles and traffic and wind and other stuff. Not sure if I am using a bad headset or what but I literally cranked up my volume and even slowed down the audio but still I couldn't hear clearly! The sound is wayyy tooo distorted and I eventually stopped there. Then the next day, I received an email from them saying that why I did not finish the orientation when I was doing very well on the first few quarters of the introduction. I replied honestly and they say it might be due to my headset. Then I forgot the rest. Online Transcription - Have you tried it?

I was with humanatic for a while but the time zone factor came in the way and also some misunderstanding with the owners. That was an easy job but I had to up early and work at odd hours.
I have heard of transcription jobs that entail typing what you hear. It has mostly to do with medical terms and therefore not easy. Pronunciation is yet another factor.

When was this? I tried applying to humanatic before when I was starting out these online job hypes but I wasn't approved. I did this once for about a year, and it was interesting. I got to transcribe a lot of different topics, though admittedly, half the time I didn't really know what the people in the recordings were talking about. Other times, when I did understand, I found the conversations a little interesting as well, so I guess that's a perk of the job. Unfortunately, it's not really something I could do long term, as the task was a bit tiring and the pay wasn't all that good, and after a while they even cut the pay so it was even less worth the effort, so I eventually just stopped.

I started to try transcribing last week. I passed the test in CastingWords and tried Rev as well. I am currently waiting for the result of my test in Rev. I just took the test yesterday. I applied for the captioning position in Rev. Captioning is more fun for me based on my experiences during the test. Transcribing requires a lot of styling and the ones written in the style guide are too many to remember. It's true that you also get to transcribe poor audio but I understand that part since the purpose of transcribing is to help the client understand the audio with the words you transcribed.

Captioning is easier for me. The video has a good quality. You can hear it well. You just have to put subtitles/captions on the screen. You break sentences into a set of logical one liners. The style guide is less complicated since you put short sentences that are in good timing with the speakers in the video. Rev has a built-in captioning application that is user-friendly. It's easy to use. Hopefully I get approved there just like in CastingWords. I'm looking forward to earning good as I get used with the tasks and finish them faster.

Rev generally has really high quality videos that need captioning, which I really appreciated. The things you outlined are the exact reason I prefer captioning for them as opposed to transcribing. We're on the same conditions. I'm about to send an application to one of the subscription sites. I really think that it was just an easy job but it needs practice and mastery. You must follow the Transcribing guide of the employer that you worked for. I tried to apply in REV but I didn't pass. Since I'm looking for those online job and I noticed that thing which is online transcription or transcribing. But I haven't tried that since before. I would love to try it though it is pretty hard to do it for me. Listening voice and write it, I'm not fond of it because I don't like those other accent which very hard to understand. Online Transcription - Have you tried it?

Definitely, it may look easy but it actually takes time to be up to speed to be considered a good transcriber. And the transcription guide may also take a while for you to get used to depending on the employer, and the sound quality of some files may cause you some problems.

I've tried working in transcription sites and it's not as easy as they say. Usually it's not only transcription there's a lot more attached to it. It's like transcribing plus doing an analysis and report. It really takes a long time to finish. And it could be pretty stressful at times that's why I stopped doing it.
