What are the typical job duties of a Data Entry Specialist?

Data entry seems like a fun job you could do online in your spare time, maybe a good work at home opportunity for a new mom or senior or college student - anyone with a little time on their hands.

What type of qualifications would a good data entry specialist need and what are the typical jobs they would do?

I'm really good at data entry jobs. I can really learn just about any system. I am quick and I am accurate.

However I detest it because it is just so boring for me. I have done jobs that requires a lot of data entry activities and I don;t enjoy this part. I feel like I am not being put to good use and I am not stretching my skills and abilities at all.

I could probably earn a good amount doing data entry jobs, if I charge per job I could charge a set rate, less than other people would charge to do it per hour because I bet I would be faster so I could get more work done... but I just won't do it.

In all my years as a freelance, I remember seeing tons of Want buy and Want to sell data entry jobs. I've applied a few times and haven't got the job and I guess I abandoned the idea, but I never knew what kind of work a data entry specialist needs to do.
From what I've figured out it is basic stuff, very simple, like transcribing a book from paper format to digital format or doing some boring copy-paste kind of jobs, although for anything digital it would be easier to higher a programmer to develop a script capable of doing everything automatically.

I have been doing data entry as a freelancer since my time in university. You need to be proficient with data entry software. The tasks are not really difficult but it will definitely feel repetitive. The work which I did was mainly to use Excel and help sort out customer data. It's all pretty straightforward.

Though I've never done data entry as a work at home or freelance position, I have done some data entry jobs in the past. The jobs are pretty easy and it's nice when it's something you can do with music in the background. However, as mentioned above, they definitely become very repetitive and as a result a bit boring. Another thing to consider, is when you're spending that much time typing or clicking a mouse, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome also can became a concern. I did end up with CTS and what a miserable thing it was! I lost most feeling in my right hand, tried steroid shots, and ended up having to get a surgery. Of course, this doesn't happen to everyone, but if it does then it is certainly not worth data entry work.

Data entry is not too difficult to be fair. You will need to have good computer literacy and an ability to work towards very tight deadlines. You will also need to be able to work extremely quickly without making too many mistakes. The job usually just consists of you entering data onto a computer system from forms or paper sheets. The only problem with data entry jobs is that they are usually very low paid and can become extremely boring after a while.

Yeah, it's not really difficult if you're good at computers in the first place. the main problem I see with people is that the job gets too repetitive and people just generally get bored which could lead to them making more mistakes when they're not that focused with the job at hand.

Yup I really think I will be heading straight to that point where it would really be boring enough that it would make me quit. But since it's something that is easy to do and earn a little extra it should be exciting for some, maybe I just need something to change in my daily routine with regards to doing data entry work or maybe I just need another other types of data entry job haha. Either way, one should take extra care of their arms/hands and overall health with just working at home.

Well, there's a lot of types of data entry work and some of them are really easy, while some needs some basic googling while others can be difficult like doing a bit of research and getting the info to be encoded, which at times are quite a bit hard.

Data Entry jobs nowadays is a mix of research and encoding unlike before in which the data you'll be entering is given. Most data entry jobs nowadays don't provide such data and they'll instruct you to find the data to be encoded and this tends to be time consuming.

Data Entry for me is somewhat bias. It is because you tend to extend much effort and spend more time just to have a good output in a restricted time but the pay seemed to be so unlikable. It does not compensate the effort and time plus the good output you accomplish. Though some work has different level of difficulties, it still does not justify the work you have done. Another thing is it hits boredom along the way which make it more difficult to stabilize and establish.

I think you just need to know how to use the Microsoft Office package. From what I have seen data entry involves copying data to either word or excel. You need to be careful with this type of work, especially because they are many scams involving data entry online. I would use a website that is known to be legitimate like Fiver or Upwork to get clients. It's also very tedious and dose not pay much. This would be best as work for a teenager.

That would be the simplest definition of data entry but most data entry jobs includes some research. Like searching for the correct information to enter or confirming if the information to be entered is correct before entering it. It's reallt not as simple as it sounds.
