Other Ways To Earn Money as a Freelancer

On freelancer platforms like upwork you can register, set up your profile and apply for jobs as an "agency."

"Agencies" are people or a company that already has a "team of freelancers"  working for them. Webmasters who need a lot of content created in a short time time often outsource these bulk projects to agencies. As this need will always exist, agencies will be around for a long time.

Anyway, technically, agencies are middlemen who find work, hand it over to freelancers. They collect the payment afterwards, take their cut and disburse the rest to the freelancers who did the work.

For those brave enough to try it, this could be another way you can make money as a writer.

I agree with you. There are a lot ways to earn extra money in the internet. I have earned through Postloop also.

I also earn with Postloop but i have a little issue on how to withdraw my cash because PayPal does not receive money in Nigeria, so the money is sent to my friends account in Lesotho. I cant withdraw the money in cash so i just shop with it.

I wasn’t aware that PayPal wasn’t truly global so that’s interesting to know. At least you’re still able to access your funds via your friend, though!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
Yea thats true, I can access it only through that my friend but I only shop with it but can't withdraw to my local bank here in Nigeria, it kind of annoying.

Sometimes I have to shop with the money even when I need it for other purposes.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Now, that's frustrating if that ever happens to me. What if you don't fancy anything to buy online? What do you do then? What if your friend at Lesotho decided to screw you over? I'm sure that's a worst-case scenario but is still possible in certain circumstances.

I really though that paypal is for every place in the world. Can't you just register that you are in a place where paypal can be accessed or it will be detected? Luckily my country can access to paypal. This works for me and make me comfortable with my freelancing job.

Can't you just register that you are in a place where paypal can be accessed
A mistake that you'd pay for dearly eventually.

While it is possible to get away with this for a short time, eventually your IP address will give you away. Paypal will "limit" your account. You won't be able to withdraw your money, send it to friends or buy anything.

Think of Tantalaus. You can log in to your account. You'll see you have money there but you can't use it. People have lost thousands of dollars as they attempted to use any means to bypass restrictions.

Paypal is not entirely global, they are restrictions to do many countries that make use of PayPal. When I first start with Postloop I want not able to withdraw and my earning was also freeze because I was trying to get my money.

In PayPal homepage you can see that they have many countries listed below but half of them are restricted.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Same with my country. I find PayPal as a very easy and convenient to receive payment. It will just take 3 to 5 business days to receive money from my debit card. I am glad that our country has no issue with Paypal.

Agencies where popularized by Mturk - Amazon's Mechanical Turk. One could register an agency there and start earning in no time at all.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

edencaga
How to be qualified in MTurk? I tried to register but then I am not accepted. I don't know the reason why they rejected me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jeane
There was a time anyone could register on M-Turk. That changed abruptly. Some said it was scammers from Eastern Europe who forced Amazon to lock out people from certain regions from the M-Turk crowdsourcing platform.

I think I remember reading on some forum that M-turk accepts only accepts people from India and the U.S. That was a number of years back. Much could have changed since then.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
It's best to do research, study, and read all relevant reviews and material written about Mturk first. It's because if you register and you don't work right away, the site would brand your account inactive or worst, it would reject your account.

Mturk - Amazon's Mechanical Turk is all new to me even though I have so much knowledge about most of of Amazon's affiliated companies.

Tell me more about this Mturk - Amazon's Mechanical Turk and what exactly is the nature of working as an agent under the company?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
It's Amazon's job platform, unlike other platforms where you have to apply for a job, mTurk has a lot of jobs that you can work on immediately and they'll pay whatever you finish. You can also opt to become an agency in which you can get and register people or workers under you and you'll get a share of their earnings.

I don't think it works everywhere though. I'm an American living abroad right now and it doesn't work for me here - I'd have to be back in the States to sign up for it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

coolavender
It doesn't work for everyone. Only US-based people are paid in US dollars. International workers are paid in Amazon gift cards. Anyone can apply and there are no qualifying tests at all but their hiring/acceptance policies are not favorable to international freelancers or even to Americans living abroad.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I’d still be okay with getting paid in Amazon gift cards, but right now I haven’t even been able to sign up (living in Asia right now). Hopefully some others will have more luck than me!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I tried joining clickworker which allegedly is an Mturk alternative but it's very much like Mturk.

If you don't live in Europe or the U.S the time you spent signing up would have been wasted. I think these companies should simply tell anyone interested in working on their crowdsourcing platforms the truth. Maybe they don't because it would be bad for PR.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

coolavender
Mturk is not a very mysterious place. Once you register, you can already see the types of tasks available on the site. Registering, however, will not give you the right to work on those tasks. They have to accept you as a worker and you may have to wait for a time to get the result. Take note that they prioritize workers who are based in the US.

The rates aren't that great (specially for newbies) but if you can work fast on a lot of tasks (HITs - Human Intelligence Tasks) , you can earn a relatively decent amount on your own. One of the projects posted there requires workers to search for the email address of contacts and it pays 1 cent per task. Some projects pay $5 per task.

I think Mechanical Turk is not available worldwide. The last time I search and attempt to try it was 3 years ago. It's a site where you can do errands or micro works in a bid time. The shortest time you offer, the better.

While something might sound good, it could be a scam which is why it is best to find out everything you can about something that will supposedly make you some extra money online.

Good things is you'll find most of the information you need about online earning opportunities on "work from home" forums, blogs or even on reddit. Looking at these forums and blogs before I try something new has helped me save a lot of time.

I almost tried applying for a freelance writer job in a freelance job seeking website but I became reluctant. It's actually a job where I have to translate an English book in to Tagalog and maybe rephrase some sentences in order to perfectly translate its contents. It's actually very easy if I think about it now, however when I evaluated myself, I realized that I am not that very skillful with paraphrasing things and worst, I don't have a very wide vocabulary that would help me to perfectly translate that English book.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I've experienced that too. I got a job last year as a translator of religious books, the deal was to translate an English book to a Tagalog one, I thought at first it was easy, then when I read the book to be translated, I found out that it was using old English and it took me a month to translate the whole book. It was so hard because I found a lot of old English words which can't be fully translated, I need to use a descriptive sentence to properly describe it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Wow! You have a very strong fighting spirit there mate. You didn't give up and finished the job even if it required a lot of effort. I feel more ashamed about quitting before even trying. I can also relate to you about my impressions about translation jobs because I also thought that it's an easy job. However, unlike you, I did quit. Your experience inspired me here mate. I will definitely reconsider applying for translation jobs again even if it's hard.

There are actually a lot of translation jobs anywhere but I found mine (which I did quit eventually) in a website that offers freelancing opportunities to freelancers and I don't know if it's allowed here to state the name of the website but the website's name is freeup. That website also offer other opportunities not just for freelance translators like audio transcriptions and web editing as well as freelance writing.

Check out Gotranscript and Transcribe me. Or just Google "Transcription Jobs". There's atleast 5 sites which hires transcriptionists and translators which I found to be legitimate. You can also go to mTurk, UpWork and FreeeUp, they're quite reliable.

I already have an account in Upwork, but sadly I did not get a job , noteven once.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You shouldn't give up. While upwork was still called Odesk, I had an account on the site. I'd been applying for jobs for over one year and all that time I never got a job. However one day, about a year and a half later I applied for a job, got hired the same day and from then on, each job application landed me a job.

To succeed on upwork, all you need is the first job and a good rating.

Most micro sites don't work or give very little money its almost not worth spending your time doing. I recommend anything design like graphic design or make animations. The freelancer field is very wide. All you need is skills. For example if you can be a programmer, you would earn a lot of money. Another way to earn online is to be a translator. Freelancers that translate into Spanish and French earn alot of money.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Seriously, graphic design is a great field in the world today and believe me when I tell you that graphic design is something that when you are very good at it, it's definitely going to be very difficult for you to have spare time to do other minor freelance works such as being a guest blogger and so on.

Even forum posting would be very difficult for you to do because you wouldn't have much time to take care of all of your days task as a graphic designer.

The freelance industry is huge I agree. However it is always important to look for a zone that you can excel in and focus your efforts there. This will help you to grow and master all the skills to become a true guru of the field and within no time you will have money flowing your way as a result of clients loving your work.

Picking a skill and being able to improve on it is one of the ways that we can really get things working in our favor as well as I have noticed that this is one way that we can charge more for our services.

Picking a skill and being able to improve on it is one of the ways that we can really get things working in our favor as well as I have noticed that this is one way that we can charge more for our services.

Being better than your competitors certainly can improve the odds of landing higher paying jobs. However you'd need to cut out middlemen (a.k.a freelancer platforms) and offer your services directly on your business website or blog. Otherwise if you don't leave, you'd still have to compete against people who will offer their services at significantly lower fees.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

If I picked out what you are trying to say clearly, it would be working as an agent for a firm or an organization which is similar to being an affiliate marketer.

Being an Amazon associates is one good way to earn money online as a freelancer without having to stress yourself too much.

I think I would enjoy doing content providing for sites under agencies in Upwork. Maybe I have to check on it later because I have some spare time for that kind of work. Besides, I love writing content because it stretches my mind like an exercise. My primary purpose in freelancing is to improve my written English and writing content is one good way for that. However, I may be needing a recommendation on what good agency to join.

Ever since I started freelancing, I have always heard about that Mturk. I haven't really check it out. Does anyone have more information about this site/ program?

My pals would always tell me that one of the best paying freelancing jobs is in Programming. Coding for applications to run in both Android and IOS is always in demand since they lead in mobile industries. Sadly I don't know how to code.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I also see plenty of work out there for coders - I think it's the way of the future, and knowing how to code will be as useful as knowing a second language, if not more so.

Amazon's Mechanical Turk or mTurk is a freelance job platform which specializes in Encoding Jobs. There are 2 options:

1. Work as a singular worker and get paid for whatever work you've done.

2. Business or Agency in which you can register workers under you. This is how some people would create or open up online encoding and even programming businesses. Workers under you can work full-time in the convenience of their homes or you can setup a place of work or a physical office for them to work in.

Most freelancers stay mum and secretive when it comes to mTurk because they don't want people to know about it, more competition and all.

There's actually a lot of sites that can help you spend your free time and earn money. I tried Globaltestmarket and other sites that give you money in exchange for answering surveys. Also, I tried Postloop which for me is fun, especially when they provide you a site where you can give comments and post threads about something you have interest at or your forte, and earn while doing them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I really enjoy completing surveys. I’ve always liked the chance to offer my opinion, so doing surveys is a fun way to earn a few dollars here and there and provide some useful feedback to businesses. Win win!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
I agree with you. I already got paid by answering surveys. The only problem with this is that surveys are not always available. You need to wait for the survey to be sent to our emails. So, it would take months before you can request for a payment since there are required points to request for a payment.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
@superlicca that's true. If I had more email invitations for surveys I'd be able to make a decent income - but sometimes they don't send them out very often. It is also a pain when they have limits until you're able to cash out. Some survey sites that I'm a member of take so much time to accrue points...it sometimes takes me a year to get $20!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
That is right! Surveys are limited. Sometimes, they will screen you out for a particular survey. The sad thing is if the survey is not compatible to my device. They will ask you to use a tablet which is something that I don't have.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
The worst is when they ask you a bunch of questions and you spend a ton of time answering them, then it seems like after 20 minutes they say that you've been screened out because you didn't match the requirements. Such a time waster!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
Yeah! I experienced that too! I felt like I was cheated because I answered a lot of questions. I was enjoying answering it since the equivalent points of that particular survey were really high. But then, it turned out that I was not qualified for the survey.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

theresajane
I feel you. That is the only downside of taking surveys as they are not easily created, they need to be revised, reviewed and etc., thus, making it hard to wait for more surveys.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
I think it is good to join a lot of survey sites. Therefore, you have a higher chance of answering surveys. The more surveys, the more points. And the more points, the more income you will get.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mitan143
I also have tried that platform which pays you after completing a survey. It took me 30-45 minutes in just one survey but it's still fine for me because they gave enough points for your completed survey. I find it also a great way to express our thoughts and opinions about the services/products being surveyed. I only do it during my free time so I can answer the question well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
I agree with you. I already earned from Globaltestmarket and I am so thankful that I signed up for this. Answering surveys is really easy. You enjoy the survey and earn at the same time. The only problem is that some surveys are not compatible to my device.

Those sites are the best place to find job if you are a freelancer. You don't need to worry about if they are paying or not because they are approved by the others that you can actually pay out. I tried it once but I don't get any job at all. Matbe my skills are not yet good.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I understand on you about that. Sometimes we thought that we are very qualified and capable to that job but in the end we disappoint the result. You need to worry bro. Some people on those sites are actually a scam. I have worked severally and ended up not receiving any pay. After reporting to the support, I was told to negotiate with the client. But, we learn every day, and I cannot get into any deal before a milestone is created.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I've had a look at Fiverr a few times but I think there are already so many established sellers/service providers on there that it can be a hard market to break into. I use a combination of sites to reach my target income. As freelancers, we need to develop multiple income streams. We also need to choose sites where we can make the most out of our time. Besides freelance writing, I am doing Human Intelligence Tasks (the most lucrative for me), call tagging, forum posting, and transcription jobs. I also have a part time offline job as an accountant.

We should also make sure that we are investing in ourselves by developing skills that can help us make more money in the future. There are convenient and affordable ways to improve our skills and obtain accreditation. On the side, I am learning programming online in my spare time. I have also enrolled in an online professional teaching course in a state university where tuition fees are inexpensive.

Working for agencies is a good way because you are assured of work in most cases, as opposed to placing bids on sites such as Freelancer and Upwork. Landing a gig that pays well on such sites is not easier. However, most agencies pay their writers peanuts.

You can sell your gig on sites like Fiverr. Alternatively, you can join paid survey sites. Basically, there are so many ways of making money online as a freelancer, but your location matters. For example, Amazon M-Turk is IP sensitive, which is the case with most US and UK websites.

Nonetheless, you can start a blog where you can write about your niche, and start selling your services. For example, a developer can start a site about web development, and a section where he/ she offers the service.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with your thoughts about agencies. Well, that is the reality and some freelancers who are desperate to find a job or a client would take it anyway. Other freelancers are also okay with agencies because of the assurance to find a good client. If you want other ways, you can try to ask on different platforms or tell your friends or those people you knew who might get interested with your offers.

I think putting up an agency is a good idea, and it's like having your own company which is cool. Although the hard part is finding the right people who will carry out the task for you, especially if you are a people pleaser. You do not want clients to not come back because they're not happy with the results.

You can also try survey sites like MOBROG, Toluna, GlobalTestMarket. They are legit sites where you can also earn extra money. You just have to be patient in answering surveys and be all honest in answering them because they are looking for genuine answers because they use it in their studies. Money should not be the main reason why you would do it but you should also enjoy doing it and helping companies at the same time.
