Have you ever had someone request that you delete their comments/posts on your blog/forum?

Have you ever had someone request that you delete their comments/posts on your blog/forum?

I was a member of a forum (not going to say what one due to privacy) and one of the senior members who had thousands of posts got mad at the forum owner and told him to delete all their content.  Of course the forum owner said no, and then the member got a lawyer and the forum owner was forced to delete years of posts which totalled over 5k posts.

After all those posts where deleted it was like the forum had a huge black hole and a lot of posts didn't make sense anymore. It was a complete nightmare not only for the forum owner but for us members too.  Have you ever had someone request that you delete their comments/posts on your blog/forum?

No, I never had that request before but if I ever did I would delete their posts. As it is fair as it is there content but depends really as some members pay people to write content. If I ended up paying for content to be done and they said delete it. I am not been funny or anything but I wouldn't delete if I paid for it. But, depending on what kind of forum it is as well in the niche. Can you tell us why he wanted his posts deleted?

I don't know what cause the them to fight with each other. I wasn't staff and the owner or the forum member never said what happened. My guess they didn't say anything about it because a layer got involved.

But what is the point of joining a forum, or give your opinion on a blog, if you want to delete the information, because you're angry? honestly that looks kind of immature. Of course there will be all kind of opinions from thousands of members, those are created to express different points of view. So sorry for the owner who had to deal with that kind of people.

That was a sorry mess that the forum had undergone. And to think that the guy had countless of forums hence the forum had a void when those posts were deleted. Why did it have to go to the extent of getting a lawyer? I wonder why some people don't know how to settle things amicably. It's just a matter of being diplomatic and I'm sure the controversy will not level up. Anyway, that's a good lesson for us especially for the forum owners.

Seriously, I'm never aware that this kind of thing is possible before now. To get a lawyer involved in forum post conflict that almost took the issue into litigation. This is horrible in my opinion. What I would have suggested to the forum owner is to look for some kind of settlement with the poster and have everything sorted out amicably because having over 5k posts wiped out from a forum would turn such forum into a serious joke.

Yeah, in these cases I'll just respect their requests as long as they're the ones who posted the content. But it helps to label something that a post has been deleted so that others will know the situation.

I can definitely understand your point under the circumstance that you paid for content. If they wanted their post to be deleted under that circumstance, then it would only be right that you receive a refund. That being said, I think that the poster should also still have the right to pull their content. Perhaps someone changed their views or realized they were wrong for what they wrote, and they don't want their image to be tarnished. But like I said, the credit for that one post should definitely be refunded.

This is just something that I have not experienced. You didn't tell us what really caused those posts to be deleted for I don't think it is right that someone to force a forum owner to delete post he/she took time to write.

Usually when they get annoyed with a staff member (usually the forum owner) or have got banned then they will ask that their posts be deleted from the forum. Even though they spent took to write the content like you said, they don't want their posts to still be on the forum because of the fact that they do not want to be a part of the forum anymore.

Getting banned means that the said poster actually breached the forum rules which led to the ban. And moreover he or she was probably paid points for those post made already, so demanding for the deletion of all those posts doesn't sound logical to me. Is the person going to refund all the points paid him for the posts? I don't think so.

Hadn't thought about this. We all think is unfair for an forum owner to be treated that way, but we don't know exactly what he did. Mostly, those are the ones that are kind of disrespectful, break the rules, post damaging comments, so in the end they turn out to be banned. I've only gotten one bad issue with a forum owner, even though I made a report, never had a word back from forum managers, and that made me feel like my opinion didn't count, so I left the community.

I had this problem but luckily all I did was delete the user but kept the posts. That way no one could see who posted those messages and the user couldn't request anything more. The posts appeared as if they were written by an anonymous user and it didn't create any problems because the discussions on the forum made sense. The fact that this guy got a lawyer involved sounds awful. Definitely not a problem that you want as a forum owner.

That's one smart way to handle such situation but my worries is that I believe that the said user can still have access to the forum and get screenshots of his posts to use it as evidence if the case go into litigation. Maybe the said poster in your forum was just trying to mess around by demanding the deletion of all his posts.

No, this never happened to me.

In the case, I myself made the decision to delete some comments / posts because things got a little out of control - my fault - and some bad words (not to mention something else) appeared in the middle of the road.

It's something I don't usually do, but it was necessary.

Well, some bad words can really be n eye sore to readers on a site. I had that issue some time ago on a blog that I wrote on and it taught me the lesson to mind what I say on some of those places.

Unfortunately, I think this ends up being a waste of time, because the work seems useless. I mean, this is something that should be inherent in the education of people, after all... Do we even have to remind them to be polite?

I did try to ask for a removal of my comment. I was trying to add something to it, yet there's no edit option so I lost points from that forum coz it may be out of topic, but it's really not. I just accidentally entered it.

Write something and just realize after it was missing something to say is so annoying, isn't it?

I always try to organize my mind before I write things down so that thoughts go out in alignment (as they are in my mind, haha).

I know right. Isn't that frustrating? Ugh. Well, you know sometimes when we think a lot and everything is just topsy-turvy.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
Yeah, pretty sad.

This is a recurring problem for me because I always think I can make what I wrote a little bit better. Sometimes I wish I wasn't that perfectionist at that level, haha. But you, it's part of me. Have you ever had someone request that you delete their comments/posts on your blog/forum?

Sometimes being too perfect spoils it, right? Well, I think we should be in the middle. Not too perfect, yet not worst. Have you ever had someone request that you delete their comments/posts on your blog/forum? Saves us a lot. Yeah, that has happened to me before as well. I hate how some forums don't have an edit function because they have disabled it for some weird reason. I don't mind it if they only have the edit button enabled for around 10 minutes after the post was posted but having it disabled forever is just annoying especially when you make mistakes. Did they remove the post in the end for you?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mdbree17
No, my post wasn't removed. Then I lost some points on that forum. It pisses me off hahaha. Anyways, I can't do anything more about it. So leave it be.

Wow, that's a very crazy story. I feel bad for that forum owner since he lost so much content! I find it ridiculous that the guy would even hire a lawyer just to get the posts deleted. Seems a bit too much to me.

I have never personally asked or been asked to delete any posts or comments so far. All of my posters have been extremely friendly and there was never any issues. I don't even get spammers since I use protection. But I have seen some forums that actually have the option to delete your own posts.

That's a good thing, I have owned forums off and on since 2006 and I haven't had anyone ask me to delete their posts either. And I am always super friendly to my forum members and I treat everyone on my forum with respect even if they are trouble makers. I try and win the trouble makers over before I ban them.

May I ask if can you name one of your forums, good sir?

So far, I have not had to remove any comments on my blogs, nor have I been asked to remove any of my comments on someone else's blog. I have had forum administrators contact me privately if I misread a forum or if they wanted to give me friendly suggestions about how to post better. That is always helpful, and I don't take it personal. In my experience, most forum administrators and bloggers are pretty helpful, and they are happy to have your traffic at their sites. I have had one bad experience since posting to forums, but sometimes you just clash with others or you make a mistake that they deem irreconcilable. But hey, that can happen in any environment.

Oh my goodness! That is a very serious case and I never knew someone could get a lawyer because of their forum posts not getting deleted. So it means we have a right to our post. Anyway, I have ever asked a forum owner to delete some of my posts and not because I had something against them but because I had accidentally made duplicate. I am also in forums where I can see a delete option beside my post and I think that is not good for a forum.

I just delete spam but I am lucky that I don't get any troll comments on my blog, probably because my topic doesn't attract that type of person. Although, if my topic did attract trolls, I wouldn't necessarily delete them as well, probably because I think it adds a bit of spice to the comments section anyway. As long as the comments don't go too far, I think it's okay to have a bit of banter in there in some way.

No. I've never had a forum member request that I delete their posts or replies. I've been lucky to never have angry forum members before, which means I've never had to deal with members blowing up, and leaving the community forever in anger. It might happen some day as every member who joins your forum is different but as of now, I've been fortunate.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I'm sure that the reason why you have never experienced this kind of problem is because you handle matters in amicable manner with your forum members. I'm sorry to say this but I have to say it, some forum owners have it in them to abuse writers on their site. I have had countless experience where I'm certain to have done a great job with the contents I created in the forum, only to get a very bad rating. This is beyond bad and very annoying.
