Have You Ever Tried Writing A Song?

I remembered when I was a kid, once my father started to turn on the radio, I don't know, for some reason, I get to know the lyrics right away, even the title just by listening on it in. We don't have internet before so memorising a song was a struggle, though for some they really bought the songbook to get the guitar cords as well.

Moving on, I love writing the song I loved on my notebook and we used to sing with my friends if we see each other every weekend. It's like, that's our mp4 before hehe.. Then It started when our teacher asked the class to write a song as our project. I guess it helped me a lot because my family loves to sing specially my father. It felt great not because i was the first who submitted the song but the feeling that you wrote something that comes from your heart and its your original song, it just felt great!  It also influenced me of jazz music. I can't start writing without my jazz collections playing.

How about you experts? Have you tried writing a song? Oh I would love to hear your stories! Thanks.

I do love song. But i never had a chance to write it as my own. Someone told me that when you writing a song it should be connected to what you feel during that time. Most of the song I think that easy to write are those sad song because when we feel sad,our emotion comes in and easy to make a lyrics.

I think that’s true, a person’s emotions really come through when they write a song. I think channeling those emotional life experiences when songwriting is what helps you connect with the audience who will hear the song itself.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Very much true. It is all about connection. The songs should connect to the listeners in order for them to appreciate it. The singers also put so much emotions to send the meaning of the songs to the audience.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
The reason we connect so well is through shared experiences. We find similarities in how others have gone through life. The most common hardship is about love affairs. Brokenhearted melancholy is so rich and encompassing that many fall in love with it.

Just like the many successful songs about failed relationships.

I agree with you and that is why sad songs about love is very popular now a days.

That is right because they scan easily write a song and compose it and many people experienced heart breaks.

It's a sad truth. I guess it helps those who are dealing with such feelings to know that they're not alone. They're also able to better process their emotions since the song eloquently explains how things are.

Right! This serves as your inspiration or motivation to write a meaningful song which is base on your experience. Audience can relate to the song as some or most of the audience already experience the same kind of emotions as the writer of the song .

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

True, the more that the song is realistic and relatable the more it is loved by people.

Songs are all about that. Deep emotions become thoughtful feelings. They have so much meaning and authenticity that comes across so well in song form. Speaking can never do them justice. Such is the power of music.

Today I met someone who loves to write and sing songs. I don't do this. I think there are persons that are gifted in this aspect.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
They are definitely smart because they could create lyrics and compose songs. For the ordinary people it was a hard task but for some it is a skills and talents. Composing a song is very dramatic because you should had a experienced related to the songs as well.

You are right. I believe that being able to write a song is a gift or skill. I really love to compose my own song but I am not really good at writing a song even if I try. People who have this kind of skill are lucky. They can earn from the songs they write and be a famous writer.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. Its a gift or talent that a person is able to write songs. There are people called as composers that earn a lot of money from the songs they write. There are also signers that makes money from the songs that were written by the composers.

It's true, not all writers can write a songs and not all song writers can write a heartfelt song.

Writing lyrics of a song comes naturally to someone who have the talent for it. It is good that there are Talent shows that open doors for different talent, singing and songwriting included.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Right, some are born to be a singers and some are composer but sometimes there are people who can do both and for that they are very talented and skills into this kind of passion.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
I agree, talent + experience are really good combination to write a song.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

emiaj55
Well I guess this is true. But I think that if you are a writer, you could write songs as well. After all you have the skill to translate your experiences into words. Furthermore, everyone enjoys music. These days you don't really have to play the instrument. A lot of apps and software could do it for you Hum some tunes, write down some poems and you might just find out that you too can write a song.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It's really where talent becomes obvious. While singing is a learned skill, we're definitely aware when someone was born with a beautiful voice. Sure, they also have to practice and train a lot. But it only enhances their already wonderful voice.

Unlike people who were born with an ordinary or unpleasant voice. We practically have to make ourselves sound halfway decent. When to those gifted with voice it comes naturally and effortlessly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Exactly When a person was born with an amazing voice, still it is not enough. That person needs to train his voice and other vocal techniques. People actually misunderstood some concept about singing. Some people taught that when the person has a good quality voice then instantly he could be a singer in the future but for me this is wrong, he still needs to develop his voice very well in order for him to be a great singer.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Yes, that's true. But you can really see the difference between someone being born with a naturally pleasant voice to someone without it.

Everyone has to practice in order to become better at something. But singing is very particular when it comes to the limits of your vocal quality. Talented singers will simply rise above those with mediocre voices even if they had professional training.

Yeah this is true. My mother's relatives are musician. They have composed a lot of songs and lyrics already but have not given any chance to showcase their skills. I don't know, it is just that they prefer to work in provinces which is only a small area but I believe they deserve to work in big music industry especially my one uncle but he has mental illness. Even if he has that illness, he can still excellently play guitar ,bass, piano and drums today. He even composed hundreds of song already.

I have never tried writing a song. If The Lord gives me a song to write and sing it for Him, I will definitely do it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Writing a song is not easy. You need lots of things to do before you finish one song. It requires feelings and emotions and experience as an addition. Writing a song and composing it is such a talent and skills.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jeffreyjose48
I agree with you. Its not easy to write a song. I will just leave doing this to the veteran composers or song writers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
It is very hard to compose a song but I remember someone told me that writing a song is just like writing a poem. The words should be rhyme and must have something to express.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jeffreyjose48
I agree with you. I also heard it from others that writing a song is just like writing a poem. You then put a melody or sound of music over that poem.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah same as like that. But most of the writers wrote a song more about love and heartbreak ups maybe because many people would easily relate to this kind of songs.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It's easy to come up with something. But for sure it will likely not be any good. It's hard to write a good song. You'd have to consider the melody and the lyrics. This is why musicians and producers are much better at making this than us ordinary people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
That is right. Melody is hard to make what more the lyrics itself. Writing a song is a talent. That is why composer has huge money because they are paying for their talents.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
In a way, songs are priceless. Because the best ones can never be invented like technology. They are abstract. Only those who are destined to make great music will make them. And people who strive to learn how to make good music.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Exactly. Maybe for some writing song can be learned but for others it is in their blood and that is called natural talent. Many can sing good but only few can write a song.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I also love songs. Songs gives you an inspiration. But to write songs I think is not for me. I can sing the songs of other people.

Yes I did when I was in highschool. One of our Art and Music projects back then was to write and compose a short song that we would sing in front of the class. Well my composition wasn't that good, I just got a passing mark.

That’s a really cool and unique idea for a school project! Sounds like you had some fun teachers that really thought outside the box a bit! I think I would have loved a writing assignment like that at school when I was younger.

That is great that you were able to compose a song. At least you got a passing score. Not everyone can write a song. We were never asked in school to compose our own song as a project. I think your Music class was cool.

At least not failed. You may want to continue that now. It's good to have that kind of hobby at least. We also have that activity when I was in highschool but I am not the one who composed the song. Yes, I did try to write a song once. My husband is a musician and I was hoping he would be willing to set the words to music. He told me the lyrics sucked! I was so disheartened by his criticism, I never tried writing a song again. Figured it just wasn't my talent. I can't release my "inner Paul Simon or Bob Dylan" if I don't have their spirits within me. LOL.

I hope you try again. If it is your passion to write lyrics and you can feel the desire to write, you could still continue to write even for yourself and not for people. I hope you find the "push" that you needed to write again. For me, maybe twice or thrice, someone have said that I sucked in the things that I do. I know it is disencouraging. I understand you. However, one day, I just continued to do the things that I do not to please them or prove something. I just want to do it. I do not think I am doing anybody harm. Maybe one day through practice you will improve and you can be a song writer.

I always enjoy listening to songs as this is one of the best ways that you are going to relax your mind and body. However, when we are talking about writing songs, I don't have the skills to do it and that has been to me for I can also use making songs to make my fiance happy as well.

Wow creating a song for your fiance is the sweetest. Not all can do that. Some will choose to give letters or buy chocolates, flowers, teddy bears or anything for their fiance but you made such an effort for her and that's way awesome. I bet she is so special to you. You two have a great day. ;)

I think that songwriting can be hard - it’s a very emotional form of writing, in my opinion - and if you’re more accustomed to writing factual pieces it can be hard to then change your writing style so drastically! It’s a bit like poetry, I guess!

I agree with you sometimes writing a song can be very emotional. But personally when you're dying inside it can be really help to ease your feelings. The first song I've ever wrote back in highschool is when my girlfriend broke up with me.

I tried making songs when I was a kid. I was so much into music that time and would play guitar daily. I wanted to be a musician someday and be in one of the girl rock bands I could watch on TV. Because of that, I did try to write my own songs and accompany it with music from my guitar. Later on found out that it is not really that easy. It takes talent and patience I guess so eventually I gave up and just focus on playing the guitar as a hobby. LOL

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Sometimes it’s nicer to enjoy something as a hobby rather than pursuing it as a career - it takes some of the stress out of it! Glad you can still enjoy playing the guitar!

I know right. Sometimes those things that you don't push yourself to do leads you to your career rather than those things you think you can do and will make it big someday.

You are good, because that's all I can do to write the lyrics but playing with guitar is way awesome. I sed to play guitar before but I never had a chance to master all the chords because I only borrowed it to our neighbor and my siblings can't stand the noise so I just decided to gave up on playing guitar. But I really do admire people who can sing while playing their guitar or any instrument they can play.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Thanks. I'm glad I have supportive family to stand the noise I make when I was just learning to play the guitar. My father and brother plays it too that is why it is easier for me I guess to learn the chords and no one minds the sound of the guitar in our home anymore.

When I was still a kid I'm not into music but as I grew older I just found out that I am interested in music. Music is in our genes specially in my mother's side. At first I don't want to create lyrics as I am not fond of writing before but then as soon as I realized, I got to interest writing especially creating lyrics in a song. I just make it as a hubby specially when I have inspirations.

I love songs but I never tried writing a song. I think it is not for me. But there was a time when I was able to compose a short melody using my guitar. The problem was, I did not know what lyrics should fit the melody. When you write a song, it should have a story. And I think I am not really good to composing lyrics.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
It is really hard to create lyrics. There are times the rhyme is not blending. Composing and making a song is such a talent and not everyone has it. There are some who were born to be a song writer.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mdayrit
I think it would be more possible for me to write lyrics than thinking of the tune that could go with it. The melody part can be the hardest in my opinion. While in writing lyrics, it is like telling a story or even writing a content. But still, I don't think I have the talent for it. I better stick to writing articles instead. =)

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's an interesting point, and now I begin to wonder. When professional songwriters compose a song, do they usually try to come up with the lyrics first followed by the melody or the other way around?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Back when Yahoo groups still existed, I joined one of them groups that was for songwriters.

I'd read numerous lyrics, listened to a lot of songs and thought I could write a song. And I did. I submitted it for review and every one of those songwriters didn't have anything nice to say about that song.

Songwriting certainly isn't something you just do because others have done it. You need to learn how write songs just like everything else. If you don't have the time for it and actually do write a song, then maybe it won't a really good song.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think that we have the same problem. I love listening to songs but if it comes to songwriting my head goes blank space. Eventhough I try hard to find the right lyrics and emotions to what I want to share it is very hard for me to say and interpret them. I wish that I have a talent on composing and songwriting but i guess not everyone can have that talent. Well let's just continue to love music.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah! We just love music but we are skilled when it comes to composing a song. I admire those people who can write a song. They are gifted and can have a career in the music industry. Here in the Philippines, there is a songwriting competition called Himig Handog wherein you can submit a song that you originally composed and can have a chance to win.

This is the story of my husband. Even if he knows how to play the guitar, he is not music-minded and he even says that he doesn't like music. In 1998, I gave him a cassette recorder just so he could record what he likes. After 2 days of tinkering with the recorder, he got the guitar and started recording silly songs. And then it dawned on him that he could write stories so why not write a song. He wrote his first song and finished it in 3 days. After that he was writing 1 or 2 songs in a day. He writes the lyrics first just like writing a poem and then he puts music with the help of the guitar. On the following year he joined songwriting contests and he won as finalist in Pinoy Musika Award. After some years he won the grand prize of a government agency's songwriting contest. Now he has written more than 300 songs, lyrics and melody.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That is amazing to hear. Maybe, I have listened or still listen to one of the songs that he wrote. He must have the skills or talent for writing a song. Even if he did not like writing a song, he was still able to do it. I hope I have that kind of talent. I would love to compose a song, however, the talent was not given to me.

Wow that's really awesome! Sometimes there are things we don't give too much attention yet someone see that to us that we can do it because they believed. Written more than 300 songs are amazing! I haven't even see the slightest glimpse that I can compose a song. Not all people can compose a song. For example like me I can write some verses but I can't encode all the verse to make a wgole song because it isn't easy. You must be good in timing, rythm, has some background in musical instrument, good at writing that are some of tge requirements that is needed to do so. I can't afford to do something like that I am not a multi talented indidual.
I therefore conclude that I can learn it and everyone of us can do it if we want to but we must persevere into it so we can learn it.

Interesting question. I have never written a song or wanted to write a song. I love to sing though. Writing a song/music I think is a form of art. I think it has to be your talent for you to come up with an amazing song. I know that song writers earn alot of money because you earn loyalties for your song. Some musicians don't own the songs the sing and they have to pay a percentage they earn from singing that song to the writer.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I feel much the same. I enjoy singing and love listening to music, but I’ve never really had the desire to create my own music. I think to myself though, a lot of famous singers have their song lyrics and melodies written for them by other people!

That is true. Songwriters get royalties every time one plays their song on TV or the radio for business, advertising, or marketing purposes. They actually make money in three ways:

Mechanical Royalties (album sales and digital downloads)
Performance Royalties (radio play)
Synchronization Royalties (licensing to TV, Films, Ads)

Well, the thing I can tell you about playing any musical instrument is that you can get good at it with lots of practice. You can't just pick up a musical instrument and start playing and then become an expert in it right away.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of violin. At the moment, I'm attending lesson sessions on how to play it very well and I'm getting good at it as the day goes by. What's your favorite musical instrument?

I actually considered myself to be a musician in my teens and early 20’s. I had started playing guitar when I was about 15 years old, and I would practice for at least eight hours a day, seven days a week. Not to toot my own horn, but I actually got pretty good at it. I started to pick up other instruments as well, and then I started writing lyrics to potential songs.

Nothing I wrote ever really came to fruition as I could never find bandmates that were serious enough to stay as a band for longer than a couple of months, but I still keep some of my stuff archived in case I meet the right people one day.

Writing a song is not as simple as writing the lyrics. A person who writes the lyrics is a lot like a poet. The magical part of composing a song lies in one's ability to create new music or melody. I had the opportunity to write a simple song in my Music class when I was in the sixth grade. It was a lot easier back then because I knew how to play the piano and the banduria and I can read musical notation and sheet music. I was playing almost daily and the notes are literally swimming in my head. I would often sing the notes of the song instead of the lyrics. However, those were things that I only did because I had to go through the drills like other students and kids I know. My heart just wasn't in it and there are so many other things that I enjoy doing.

I once wrote a rap. I cannot perform rap, but I could hear this rap in my head. Unfortunately, I cannot perform it. Nor could I sing well enough to sing any song I wrote. Every so often I give my daughter, who can sing, one of my poems as I hear it as a song in my head. She never seems to make anything of it. Therefore, while there is music in my head, I remain a writer of words to create pictures on a page.

I haven't successfully achieved writing a song, it is because I only try to write lyrics and incorporate the melody of an existing song. Given my struggle, I have my utmost respect for people who can write lyrics and produce the music at the same time. I did, and I really love listening to a song, but I guess writing one is not for me. I feel each songs that I'm listening but it's really hard to make an original song because it must be in rhyme and also it should good to the ear.

If you are drilled well in literature in English when you were in college, I'm very sure that you wouldn't find it difficult to deal with rhyme and rhythm in poem writing.

They are actually one of the first basis that you are going to learn which would help build your foundation in poem writing. Remember poems are written in stanzas.

Today I just write a song about the victims of war, I just mainly do it to inspire others that in particular war there is definite winner since both of them are loser. They lost a thousand lives for some misunderstanding and as well some infrastructure that are vey important to our progress. It is really great to write some songs especially if it was written into a purpose.

Yes, I did once for my Music subject during my second year in college. Our instructor told us to write one as a requirement. I was actually very excited to write the music and be able to record it and shoot a music video because the guitarist for the group where I'm at (it's a group project by the way) is my crush at that time. However, things became a little bit too sour because I kind of had a conflict with that person whom is my crush and so we weren't able to record it together.

Of course yes, I have tried writing a song and for the record, I have written more than 30 poems at the moment. I'm looking forward to having an anthology of poems by the end of the this year getting published.

I was told about publishing my poems online but I don't feel much comfortable with because of copyright issues as I wouldn't like to have someone copy and claim my poems for himself or herself.

I have composed many songs in my life but have not recorded any. Am a dunderhead when it comes to writing music. I cannot put head over tail of the staff and notes. I have not so far written any music.

What I have done is to write lyrics on a piece of paper. Those lyrics are useless to a musician. Unless he puts his own tune then he cannot sing it.

Writing a song is really great because it inspires me to work hard and do everything to achieve success. I love music that is why I sometimes write some songs whenever I feel to do so or If I am motivated to do it. I know that not of us are fan of writing songs since it is not a typical work of an ordinary individual except when we are really a professional singer then we might able to make composition of songs very often.

I once had written a song when I joined a song writing seminar during our youth summer camp. The song I'd written was a praise song. It's similar to a poem but it the lyrics or lines really have to jive with the beat or the rhythm. It was just some basic chords and I just wrote down the lines until we completed the song. I remember that my teammates were too shy so I ended up writing all the lines.

I just remember the song that I made during my college days that was required to us by our professor. I made a song about a certain product that I want to introduce in the market. It was like a form of advertisement song and that was really funny at some point since my classmates were laughing because of the very weird lyrics that I had made for the song. It was really enjoying at some point and a very cool experience.

Well I did try to write one very unsuccessfully when I was in the college. There was a very small poem that I had created with a lot of effort and I thought I would be able to extend the words of the poem and then manage to make a good song out of it. I had a lot of misconceptions about how easy it must be to write a song those days, but once I sat down trying to make that song , I understood that it was impossible for me. I realised that writing poems and songs was not my cup of tea. Since then I have never tried to do that and I have a great respect for everyone who is able to write poems and songs.

It was always a dream for me writing a song. Just like you when I was a child I intend to write songs whenever thoughts came into my mind. But when I got older, writing songs made harder for me. Maybe because I knew then what is good and bad lyrics unlike when I was a child that did not know about that.

Honestly, yes but it was very long time ago. I think it was when I was in my junior high school days. As far as I remembered during that time, there's a trend on writing like song lyrics, poems, stories, etc. I was inspired to make my own song lyrics after I read a story which is relatable to my life. The lyrics is based on my personal experience in life. I couldn't remember about the message well but I know it was about my life. Unfortunately, I gave up on it immediately because I couldn't make a beautiful sound for it and it literally frustrates me too. I tried to listen to some music but I think I'm not really into music that time unlike today. But yeah, I tried making my own song lyrics before and it was my last time.

I most definitely have. Writing a song is similar to writing a poem, but of course, with tune and tempo added in. When I was in high school and was so much infatuated with this pretty girl, I would write poems about her and I even wrote a couple of songs for her. They were cheese and probably turned out creepy so I got rejected in the end. But yup, I've tried. I burned them all though so no evidence of them exists. Aside from this post...

Now, if writing a song is tough and challenging for ordinary people like us. Being a singer-songwriter is indeed a God-given talent. Imagine having the ability to compose songs and sing them all at the same time. I do admire people who are like that, who in the industry usually are rappers.

I've tried writing a songs when I was still in Highschool, but all of them are probably soil now. All of them are unfinished and they aren't good. Before writing songs, I've written poetries before. I thought that writing songs are just like writing poetry but surprisingly it is way harder than poems.

I did write one when I was on grade school. It is a bit embarrassing. I always love music. I love how a lyric can convey your feelings or emotions. I like how one line can irk a frustrations or happiness from you. I want to write something like. Songs alike poetry and I can only write prose as of now.

writing songs are actually fun and satisfying. I remembered starting the same way. we were asked to do a simple song about a novel we have read. From then on, I started writing songs of my own. I find writing song a fulfilling hobby. but what is more fulfilling is to have somebody appreciate your work. When a friend or a stranger hears one of my songs and say "hey, that sounds good.", my heart is filled with pride. It feels like I could communicate on another level. The feeling is just great.

I tried writing a song once, it's for a copywriting gig which needs a jingle. It's a short song, I supplied the lyrics and I think it was good enough because it was accepted and i got paid.

Yes, as i remember years ago I tried to wrote a heart break love song. That song was all about my hidden feeling to someone who tried to court me. That time I was not ready yet for commitment so I decline to accept his love. It really hurts me so much seen him courted other girls.

I think aside from the skill or talent for writing a song, it is also a big help if the writer is really inspired. Other songs are based on the story of the writers. They write from their own experience. Their experience and inspiration gave them the idea to write a great song. Being inspired can unleash their creativity and that's what also makes them as a writer.

When I was a child, I aspire to be a singer and I thought being a singer requires you to create your own songs. I did write a few songs and sang the melody inside my head. The thing is, I don't know how to execute it and I don't know how to play any instruments at that time. Right now, I am trying to be resourceful as I can, we can create now some beats and create an instrumental using an app, I can also now play guitar and piano. I wanted to start again as my interest started to build up too.

That was amazing. I am glad that you did not stop from what you wanted to be. Playing guitar and piano is really hard. I tried learning it and still I did not get it. Go head and start again. Live in your dreams and you will become successful soon.

I remember making songs with my friends back in the day. We went to the park during weekends and brainstorm. We ended up with a collection of poems instead. We never got to apply music or melodies with the lyrics we wrote.

I actually tried it once, but I was very young back then. Around grade school maybe, and I had a friend co write the lyrics with me but it never became a song. Both of us are not that talented in music back then so it was very hard for us to come up with a tone, and were not sure what genre to go with. I eventually lost the lyrics and I think he also did, but personally. I don't think I'll be good in it anyways so I'm not gonna try that again.

I love listening to songs, but I lack the creativity to write one. I keep on trying to write one but it doesn't really turn out nice so I stopped trying. I am also a student and I am obliged to write one for some activities but I just can't produce a really good song. My friends are more capable than me when it comes to writing a song. I am capable of writing good essays or articles but when it comes to writing a song, that is where I fail. Maybe we really all have our own specialties. But if you really keep on trying to do something you are not good at, I am sure that you will improve through time.

I love composing music, I have done it regularly for almost a decade. However, when it comes to writing lyrics, I don't know where to start. I've successfully written one lyrical song in my life as a musician, and even then I don't think it's very good. I've always been envious of those who had a talent for poetry, and it's interesting that so many other writers here are in the same boat.

I have never tried. Although I am song lover, composing and writing songs seems so difficult to me. Apart from writing blogs and articles, I have gone ahead to try and write poems.

Back in college, I used to a friend who was a music, I only used to go through his written scripts for corrections.
