What is the best form of communication? Writing or talking?

I've been working as a Training Facilitator for my day job. I always find it hard to make everybody understand what are the content of my modules. Some prefer listening attentively to me, and some like to read it while I'm talking. I'm just wondering what form of communication is much more effective. Writing or Talking?

It all depends on the speaker for me. If the trainer has exceptional verbal communication skills then I will go oral communication. Generally, I find verbal communication to be better as I can understand and retain whatever has been explained and said for a longer period. However, there are some people who are not good speakers and in this case, I will opt for written communication.

Yeah, you're right. But sometimes it's up to the listener also, or the audience. There're some audience prefer to read all the details and not attentive to speaker. It's just a give and take if how to absorb the information. Maybe that's the reason why after the verbal explanation of the speaker they are always asking the audience if, is there's any question, but most of the audience prefer not to ask question and they choose to read just to understand.

For me I mainly prefer the talking method since I am more a listener type audience in which I like the way people are talking or communicating to other people because writing sometimes has some setbacks since it does not give you fast and accurate response unlike in talking that you can really feel the emotion and direct to the point conversation which in writing doesn't give us.

When I am courting a girl before I really prefer the writing method since you can easily express what you want to say for a girl without noticing your voice or physical expression. I was really shy at first because it was my first time to court a girl and I was really thankful for the writing method because it helps me a lot to express my feelings and helps me to have a close relationship to a certain girl.

I couldn't agree with you more. If the speaker has good communication skills in which he or she is able to express the message clearly, then it's better to speak. You need to figure out your strengths and then decide accordingly.

That is right. Its case to case basis.. Know where you able to stand out,is it talking or writing. As long as you can convey the meaning of that message and that people could understand it then so be it.

I totally agree on that. It still depends on the person on how they will elaborate theirselves to everyone, whether they do it in writing or talking, it's still up to them. Exactly, as long on how they understand and the meaning of the topic, go for it - just do on what make you comfortable with.

Very well said. Some people wanted to communicate mostly and writing and vice versa. We cant do about it because it is up to the people what they want. What we need to do is accept whatever it is and support them.

I find that it definitely depends upon the speaker as well. Recently I've taken a liking to author and clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson. He is an incredibly eloquent speaker and a fine example of a modern day public intellectual. He is very easy to understand when he speaks, yet manages to explain very complicated ideas in doing so. However, I can't say that I'm equally a fan of his writing. While his writing is as potent as his lectures, there is something about it that just doesn't come off as eloquently as his speeches do, to me at least.

Yeah! you are right. It really depends. It's either way around, and both writing and talking is essential. Sometimes writing can be misunderstood or others might don't understand what was the content trying to say so when you are talking you can explain what you want to tell them. So yeah both are very important.

This is so true. I find some people cannot express what they really want orally. There are some who excel in written communication but cannot transfer it to their verbal communication. I am one of those and I need to work on my verbal skills more.

I like that talking allows you release your emotions immediately. We can show what we mean by fully evoking them through our facial expressions and body movements. It's the most convenient form of expression.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes I agree on that because in talking you can easily give your thoughts to other people without thinking too much. Talking method allows us to receive prompt and immediate response to the person we are communicating about. Many people really prefer this method over the other one because of different reasons and benefits that it gives to each and everyone of us.

Exactly. It all depends on the ability of the person. With regards to the Multiple Intelligence Theory, I am a verbal linguistic person so I do really prefer talking than writing because it's better for me to hear sound for I can learn better with sounds. However, there are people who visual spatial and so they have to write in order to see the words for them to memorize the information.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That sounds really interesting. What I also like about talking is that you can actively engage the other person with your emotions. The two of you can exchange meaningful expressions not possible through writing.

You'd have to be in the actual physical presence to feel how they feel. Like the joy expressed in meeting long lost friends.

I have to agree it depends on how good or engaging the speaker is. If you're a crappy sounding and boring speaker then whatever you're saying would not be retained but if you're a well trained power speaker, you can be sure that people would absorb what you are saying.

I believe the best form communication is listening. Its better to listen first before we speak. Its not good if people keeps on speaking and there is nobody there to listen. This is the problem in modern homes today. Parents don't listen to the needs of their children.

Earlier today I have the privilege of listening to a talk of a psychologist. Her topic is about teenage depression. One of the things I remembered in her talk is about the need of the children to be listened to. Sometimes parents are too busy that they don't give attention to the needs of their children. So I choose listening more than speaking.

I believe that writing is the best form of communication. Its easy to speak when you know how to write. Speaking is easy to do. Writing is more challenging.

I think the best way of communicating is Writing because written conversation can be read again and again unlike talking which sometimes poses a problem like language barriers. Also writing means that it's easy to produce copies of it and it could easily be saved and stored for future reference and use.

It's true what you just said, even to add to what you just pointed out, with written communication, there is no room for forgetting the information passed to anyone because they are always with a copy of the message. But if it's oral, give some people 1 hour and ask them about the information, they would completely forget.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
Yeah, most written information are saved information so to speak and its always better because you could access it repeatedly and you could make copies of it for everyone to read. Just like Newspapers, Magazines and Books. When it comes to communication, I think it's the best way.

I prefer writing, especially if the topic that I'm discussing is serious and complicated. And by doing that people have the chance to go back and review everything that I've said. This will help them digest the information that I've laid.

Whilst I agree with you, I think it depends solely on the situation and the person as well. Some situations, it may be better to talk face to face to someone because the situation would not be suited to be discussed via writing (telling someone to do something extremely important, firing someone etc.). Some people will of course prefer to communicate via writing, for example if they have trouble speaking a certain language.

I agree with you. The Bible as God's message was in written form. Because His word was written it can be reproduced from generation to generation. This is a good answer.

I also had an experience in training people when I was head of a project before. What we normally do is to provide the participants with the written procedures. Let them read the handouts for a period of time depending on the length of the reading material. After that, we being the talking at the same time with the hands on. The problem with speakers is that they just seem to recite what's on the hands out. The best method is to talk while the participants are trying out the procedure. And the hand outs will just serve as their consultant in case when something goes wrong.

We all know that people have different traits and learning capabilities. Some prefer to listen because they tend to learn more that way and others would read rather than listening for the same reason. What I think the more effective way to communicate with your trainees is that you do both. This might take some time but in the end, what is the reason why we train them right? You can as well know your trainees' personalities. For those who prefer to listen to you, I think you can discuss and talk to them with regards to your modules.

Writing and talking are both effective forms of communication. When you're talking, you can give gestures and facial expressions which people are more likely to follow. You can also express your emotions whilst you're talking. Writing, on the other hand, helps a person review what you wrote from time to time. In that way, they're able to understand the topic that you're trying to talk about much more clearly.

Written communication is by far the best from of communication to me. Too much talk bores, I seriously find it very difficult to stay in any meeting that lasts for more than 30 minutes. I prefer having a memo served me than having me seated for hours all in the name of meeting.

I agree, writing what you want to say is the best way to address someone without any inadequate discussion. Also writing is a good way to say something safer, talking sometimes makes it hard because i have to think what i want to say. Sometimes my mouth is faster than my brain...

I don't think anyone likes to have any meeting that lasts for more than 30 minutes unless it's about something that they are passionate about or interested in. But I guess, whether or not they like talking to someone, all comes down to the person. Whilst you don't like it, I guess some other people may prefer to talk to someone as they can clear up certain things which writing may not be able to.

Having to listen to someone for long periods of time can truly bore people. I also prefer reading because I can understand it better compared to listening to a speaker. I can re-read written materials which is a lot better because when it comes to listening you can only listen to them once.

I prefer talking when it comes to personal conversations. Writing is great and all, but even when the writing is effective, I find that something is lacking. That's just for me. It's like when I'm speaking to my friends. Despite the flaws and imperfections, they're more likely to get what I'm saying because I'm right there. I get to explain things more clearly.

I prefer talking more especially when I am talking about the things that make me excited or personal conversations with people. Because it is much easier and you get to know their reaction if they are really listening or just bored talking to you. However, I prefer writing more when I am trying to be creative or jotting down some of my deepest concerns in life or secrets.

Truly, it is easier to know the reaction of the respondent when we talk than when we write. The thing is that people can feign reactions when we write to them in a situation where some will act like they are sad while they are not. So, it is a good thing to talk than write, but I always enjoy wiritng than talking.

I agree, talking is a great way to socialize and have a reactive communication. Talking will always be the primary way to communicate, although some people have more skills in terms of real time discussions specially on training's and events. Its really nice to express your self specially if your a talkative person like me. It always works on me, when having a conversation with my family and close friends, I just really can't stop talking at all. But somehow writing works on me too if I need to communicate with someone that I'm not really close to but need to talk to them, I can more express my self through writing just for them to know my thoughts.

Well I think in your case they need it both. Explain it by keep talking to them and leave some notes, a handwritten to make them understand what they missed while you explaining some important details. but during my school days, sometimes, I really don't understand what my prof. trying to say to us. and I really need to read it to understand more.

I prefer writing as a form of communication to talking and the reason is that I always see talking as a waste of energy and time. I feel at home when I write and that is the reason I can write long articles without feeling tired in any way. I've always seen those that talk better than they write and I have to say that it is simply the way they want to live their life which I respect a lot as well.

I also feel writing is the best way of communicating since the reader can postpone reading to a time when he or she will fully understand. Writing makes it easy to refer back especially when you forgot what you read. Although when it comes to learning, some sections or chapters needs someone to teach and explain to you before you can fully understand what is written.

The truth is that some people are thorn between written and oral means of communication. There are some people who would know everything about something but can find it hard to verbally express themselves and their thoughts but if you give them a pen and paper, they would blow your mind with what they would write down. And there are kind of people who would have it very easy to talk from now till next year but to write a thing about what they said is a mission impossible for them.

I like how you have explained your point. I prefer writing more than talking. I have always had a hard time making my point understood by someone else when talking. Sometimes you just can't find the words to say. I prefer writing instead.

Sometimes writing method also give us the advantage when we are courting to a girl because we can easily convey our message without exposing our selves to particular that we love. It is really applicable for those person that lack the self confidence to tell the truth to the person she loves.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I think the fastest and easiest way to effectively convey a message or to communicate is by talking, the problem is you can only do it effectively and efficiently face to face, yes it can always be done via phone, movile or broadcast but it's not the same as when you have a personal conversation with a person. I do think writing is a very effective way of conversing and it's effectivity resides on the writing capabilities of the sender and the compression level of the receiver. But what's good with written words is that it could be easily saved as a document and made available to the public as a resource.

I have tried both methods. When in school, I always prefer when the lecturer talks and explains a concept. Even if I won't grab everything that was talked about during the lesson, I will at least feel I was taught. This will make understand faster and deeply when I read later for myself.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
I think that when you pull it towards academics, it's a lot better to go with oral communication with the lectures. Some textbook doesn't really convey the lecturers intended lesson, so therefore it would be more fruitful to stay in class and take the lessons than wait for the written one.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
I say work with what you are better with. If you're better at talking for explaining during lectures, then do that instead of writing. Do whatever you prefer because you can't really change people's preferred mode of learning. There are people who learn better when they read the lectures themselves, while others are more used to just sitting back and listening to the lecture.

This is a great point, that your audience may be more open to receiving information through a different medium. I think I'm a much more charismatic person when I speak as opposed to when I write, so I'd much prefer to talk my message than put it in text. It's harder for me to capture people's attention through writing I think.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, although lecturing really has to have some form of talking, os finding the balance is key. in terms of other times when I need to communicate, I an express my thoughts more freely when writing than just talking spontaneously.

Talking for me is the best communication that is ever made. In reading, you may call it communication with other but the phase will be slow. In talking, you will get a chance to receive asap the comment or the idea the person you are talking.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
I think that both of them have different uses it only really depends on the person on what he/she is going to do. We are blessed to have the two options in conveying a particular message to a certain individual. Other people might find the talking method as the best and reliable way while others will definitely choose writing as the most convenient of them due to some advantages and disadvantages.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There is a theory that states that a person can only concentrate for 7 minutes straight. After this their mind starts to wonder. This is especially applicable to talking. My advice would be to use a combination of the two techniques to help with concentration. This is why presentations made with power point are more effective. Good examples are Ted Talks. They capture people's attention more .Just lecturing people for 45 minutes or an hour really does not help.

This is an essential top when one is looking forward to making a whole lot of impact with talking and writing. It is not always easy to focus on talking alone since there are lots of things that you get to miss out, but when you combine it with writing some of your ideas, it helps you to remain focus.

I would say that this is a pretty pointless comparison, since they both have their pros and cons depending on the situation. So ultimately it all depends on what is the purpose you need to communicate, but if I had to pick one of them without any regards to anything else, I would say writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Yeah, as with everything, the context makes a difference on whether writing or taking is better because they both have their pros and cons, and there are situations when writing to communicate is generally frowned upon and there are times when you just can't talk and should resort to writing for communication.

I think it depends on the situation or circumstances, but for me I would rather choose the talking method through video calling or voice call since I will definitely understand more the people that I am dealing about. Talking gives you the assurance of clarity that in writing never had, you can immediately feel the emotions of your conversation through talking and I think it is mostly the most commonly used by most people around the world.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

MomoStarr16
You got a good point there. You can really got the right idea or the clear information through talking rather than reading it. The feeling will be felt asap if you use talking as a communication.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes that is right that is why it is very rare for me to write when communicating to someone else because I am more comfortable already in the talking method because of the prompt response that you will get from the person that you are dealing about. In writing, it sometimes takes some time before you could realize what a certain person wants to convey with you. But it would always depend on the person on what would be the best choices that he/she wants to use because we all have the freedom to choose what we think is right for us.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Writing for me, its a form of expression with a deep evaluation. I have been writing for quite sometime now and somehow it is a freedom of expression without anybody interrupting me. For me writing works with a teller and a listener, me as a teller and the audience is the listener. The good thing about writing is, what you write is all about your opinion and the only way an audience can disagree is by not reading your content.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
I agree on you, sometimes I am using the writing method whenever I want to express something that I am shy to say or to speak instantly to a certain individual. Writing is a thing that makes us to be more confident in conveying what we really want to say to other people without noticing our personal expression from our face or voice. It is really a good choice for those people who are a shy type person just like me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I see where you're coming from, but I take problem with idea of disagreement taking the form of simply ignoring a message. If this is how we communicated solely, nothing would ever get accomplished and things would never improve in society because we'd simply ignore those we didn't agree with (which admittedly is what's happening in politics and such due to social media today).

I think there's something healthy about having our views an thoughts challenged by others, whether through speaking or writing. Kind of like what I'm doing now, disagreeing with something you've said, helps to promote growth among individuals.

Hi since I am a trainer myself, I believe it works both ways. It is important that the speaker knows how to get the audience attention. They might lose interest in the middle part of the training and that's where is reading and writing comes in. Add a little bit of interesting questions that is related to what you are teaching them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You're right. The trainer need them both. There are some situation that it's really hard to understand the speaker, and if someone ask the seatmates they will both lost during the lecture. They need the written form of communication or copy of the topic to understand more and review it.

Spoken words are best if and when you're directly or personally talking to a person or audience, while Written words are best when it comes to conveying voluminous data in long distances or saving it for future use in the form of books, magazines and digital data.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
I agree that spoken words are the best one because you will really feel the essence of the message that someone is relaying with you. Aside from that it is more comfortable to talk because it is direct to the point, instant message and understanding for everyone. The clarity of the message is I think the advantage of spoken words when we are having a conversation with someone else.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I had observed that most of us really agree at some point and choosing the talking which is the best way to have a communication with someone else. In reality talking method is more useful than the writing method in my own point of view due to its advantages. But no matter what we choose, I think it will be up to us as long as we will feel convenient about it and would make us more comfortable, at some point.

Hi.My name is Lilly, happy to be here.
My take on the current subject is that generally I agree with you that spoken communication is better. Why? I feel spoken is better in that where you are not clear for whatever reason, you are able to pick up from the body language. A large number of people can agree that body language is very important in communication hence my sentiments about spoken being better than written. The other thing about written communication is that often times one may be misunderstood due to seemingly simple things as wrong spellings or wrong usage of terms.

Hello Lilly. Glad to have you here. Welcome to this forum.

Well, I agree with you and you have a point. Spoken is no doubt much better than not. You can communicate to people to any possible using your spoken language. You can also multitask while you are doing other thing and you listen to someone who's speaking. In fact, we have this part of what we called mouth and the ability to speak for us to communicate to people. Sign language is just an alternative tool to help our fellow people who are disabled persons to easily communicate with us.

Agree, I tend to prefer talking when I need to communicate something to a person, to a very small group of people, and to my dear ones too, specially if there's some kind of predicament. But, when it comes to larger groups, or if need to express myself thinking very carefully about what I want to communicate, then I have to write down my words.

I think writing method is just limited to some things just like when you are writing a letter from the old times wherein gadgets or mobile phones are not still available. The writing method was really useful during those days but now for sure it is very rare to hear people that are sending telegrams or letter to anyone in a far away place since the trend now is using some gadgets to be used for video chat or voice call.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Right, technology has brought us a whole new way to keep in touch. However, that makes a conversation very cold, very distant, I mean there's nothing better than to say words person to person. Of course, if there's a big distance between, technology is the right way to talk, but as long as you can say what you want to say personally, that will make it unique.

Technology really give us the new changes that was not present before, I think the new trend now is using gadgets that could be used for video chatting or voice call. Yes talking face to face, Whatsapp of through phone could reduce the miscommunication faster. I prefer talking through phone though as I don't have to look at the other party face. Who knows whether he is in bad or good mood.

Technology is great, and it has reached all of us, for sure it has helped us a lot, specially when your loved ones are far away. But as you say, if someone is talking to me through the phone, I don't know if that person is in bad or good mood, if he/she is feeling right or is bored with our talking, and when you talk face to face you can feel everything that person wants you to know.

This is much how I feel as well. If you're face to face, it's much easier to just verbally convey a message. However, if I'm dealing with people in a business sense, a lot of the time I like to email since then there's a written record of what we've discussed. I find it easier to then refer to things we have discussed in previous emails.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
The talking method of communicating to your love ones or relatives is much more important for me because of the benefits that it gives to both parties who are communicating with each other. Talking is very easy to do, very fast and efficient to have unlike in writing that it really take some time, whereas in talking it is really immediate and satisfactorily.

I would have to agree with you on that there are times in which writing is more appropriate and there are instances in which spoken words are deemed necessary. But the best in my opinion is to have it written as well as verbal, doing this would give you a record of what was spoken for future reference.

It really depends on the material to be conveyed and the targeted audience. In some cases writing is more feasible while in others spoken words are needed.

I couldn't agree more to this. Writing and talking are both preferable depending upon the situation. Written words are good for expressing thoughts that should be consist of well-chosen words to effectively deliver precise message you want to convey. On the other hand, spoken words are good for straight forward and faster exchange of thoughts.
