5 tips on how to become a good content writer.

Hey everyone!

As a lot of you already know, I've been doing SEO and Online Marketing since 2003 and I've picked up a few skills along the way. One of those skills is content writing since when I started I couldn't afford to hire a writer to do all of the work I needed, so I did it myself 5 tips on how to become a good content writer.

Anyway, out of all the tricks I've learned over the years, I have 5 that stand out which can help almost anyone who is wanting to become a content writer for their own websites or for their profession because they want to be an actual writer or freelancer for small to large jobs.

So lets get into it, shall we 5 tips on how to become a good content writer.

5 tips on how to become a good content writer

  1. Learn Punctuation - It's a simple thing to learn which will help you out in the long run. If you've been reading this, you've noticed that I'm still working on my punctuation. I've got a decent hold on it, but I couldn't focus on this part of writing because I have a problem with too much info running through my head at once and I want to get it down before I lose it 5 tips on how to become a good content writer. And punctuation takes sooooo long to do properly (not really, but that's my excuse).

  2. Proper Spelling - Learning how to spell properly actually is very simple now a days. You have access to spell check pretty much everywhere so you don't have any excuses for spelling something wrong. The system will actually tell you that it's wrong, and if you don't fix it, you're just being lazy.

  3. Proper Grammar - Having proper grammar is more difficult than spelling because even though some systems will tell you your grammar is off, you may not agree because you're too stubborn (just like me!). Having proper grammar isn't always a necessity because I guess it depends on your audience. If you're typing content up for a humor blog or personal website then you can write it however you want. If you're writing up something for a professional website, you'll want to focus on everything that has to do with proper grammar, punctuation, formatting, etc.

  4. Different Writing Styles - Understanding different writing styles and being able to execute them is an enormous selling point when you're trying to make a sale. Some clients won't want a very serious and business type of writing style because they want everything to seem like it was written by a person and not a corporate robot. But other people will want something that can be published in a book. So knowing how to write in different styles will help you with sales down the road.

  5. Content Optimization - Now in my field this is one of the more common things, but for new writers this is something that gets overlooked because they aren't writing for higher search engine rankings. You'll need to read up on how to properly optimized an article or press release in order to get the best SEO (search engine optimization) benefit. By doing this you will be able to sell your articles and other various writing jobs for much more. You can make a few more bucks by knowing this because sometimes it takes a bit longer to write up an article due to the layout and formatting that is required.

Now these are just some very basic things that you'll need to know in order to become a good content writer. Some of them are pretty obvious, but some you may not have thought could help you out as much as they really can.

Although some tips are somewhat obvious (at least for me), they are still great ones and certainly help anyone to write better.

Unfortunately, many people still despise the art of writing and think they can write the way they want or feel more at ease (which in most cases can be translated into errors followed by other errors).

Nice article.

Yeah, the issue is that some that write fail to follow some of these rules which is pathetic, if you ask me. Doing things the right way really matters at the end.

I can't see the point of being recognized and having growth being who you are not. I mean, creating a character or something similar only to get to where you want is a waste of time (at least in my point of view).

I would go for proper grammar and writing styles. I don’t think we have a problem with spelling unless you forget to use the speller checking tool. But with grammar, I guess you need someone to read your content since tools for grammar checking are not reliable yet. And with the style, it can be anything although I prefer a varied writing style. You can learn from taking note of the other writing styles that you happen to read. It’s not really imitating but just getting the inspiration and the idea on how to write in a particular style.

I don't pay much attention to punctuations while I am writing and that's the reason I am using a spell checker. You must also make sure that you work is error free and there are no grammatical mistakes as this may reduce the quality of your work. Anyway, that's a very interesting article. I will keep these tips in mind.

Nice Tips I've relearned alot. Like you, I hate punctuations and I'm too (lazy) busy to master it. A punctuation program should be invented.

Great tips. Content generation is the hardest and easiest thing to do. It's not easy coming up with fresh ideas especially with all the articles and blogs that are updated and started on a daily basis. However I agree with you that writing is a skill all you have to do is follow the rules and you should be okay. The most important rule to learn is the diffrent writing styles and how to execute them. Your writing can be rejected, not because it is bad, but because of your style.
