Do you wake up in the middle of the night to write?

Do you wake up in the middle of the night to write?

There are those days when the right idea for a book or for a chapter can't seem to find you. So you call it a day, go out, get busy get back home relaxed, and then you go to sleep.

You find yourself awake at 2:00am in the morning, and bang, that idea you've been looking for all day comes to you. All of a sudden, you have that troubling chapter all figured out.

Do you wake up and write, or do you go back to sleep and take a chance to remember it when you wake up?

Jeelineex,I agree with you when you say that at times it's easy to forget an idea if you don't jot it down.Precisely, that is the reason why I find myself writing the tiny pieces that come to me in the middle of the night. That way, it is easy to put the tiny pieces together to make something sensible. I write fiction, sometimes the words come to my mind without any given formula, especially when the mind is at rest.

I write poems, and there are times when I am traveling my mind creates verses, then when I am home I forgot about it but I know it was good, and it is totally frustrating.

That's really sad. I've had this too. Mine is like an interview of sorts. I have such beautiful and compelling answers to the topic at hand. But the moment I stop thinking, I quickly forget about it.

I feel like we should have a voice recorder for times like this. That way, we can simply speak our minds without interrupting our creative flow.

I haven't experienced sleeping at night and then waking up to write. What I do is to write late at night before sleeping. Well, for me, when my sleep is interrupted in the middle of the night, I wouldn't have the motivation to write, and my mind would not work properly.

It is 11:35pm here and I am writing. I don't think that I should have plans of waking up in the middle of the night to start doing anything that relates to writing as it is not going to work the way that I want.

I agree with you, if I am tired and very stress my brain can't generate good topics.

I have not experience waking up to write my idea during mid-night. I am good at sleeping. My mind is at peace and resting. I rarely dream. My idea pop in mind during mornings or I see something interesting. But, there are time that I forget my idea especially when I don't jot it down. I can't hardly recall.

I envy you Jelineex (in the not creepy kind of way, lol). My mind is often so busy I find it difficult to sleep. I've had to learn techniques to quiet my mind at night before I can get some sleep. Then there are nights when, you just have to wake up in the middle of your sleep to write down those ideas that just popped at you, and which you've been gunning for a long time. Especially writer's block breakthroughs.

I understand that there are some people who really have the difficulty to sleep. The mind is so busy thinking about their love life or work. It feels so restless. Sometimes, the mind is so stress and occupied with the things that we want to do or achieve. It's better to condition the mind and body to sleep early. So, it will be used to the habit of sleeping. There are also instances that I am bothered but usually I take a long walk during the day. To free my mind and makes my whole body tired at the end of the day.

Wow, good for you. But, I wish I am like that because honestly it is hard for me to sleep at night.

Same here. I can't recall the last time I had a dream. I sleep like a log. My kid always makes fun of me, she says I am immediately asleep just seconds from lying down. And I rarely wake up in the middle of the night.

I guess were lucky in that instance to sleep when we want to. I thank God for that. My mom would always asked me if am practicing getting dead. They have difficulty waking me up. I'm so stubborn. I would always response to her "dead don't snore". I'm just in the state of comma.

I really don't sleep at night so basically I'm writing or watching movies or doing some freelance work every night until about 4AM, at which time I'll cook breakfast for the family.

When it comes to ideas popping out, I just type it in my smartphone or I just use the voice recorder in my smartphone.

I actually have the same way if hitting my ideas. I always use my phone's notepad when ideas come at the most unexpected time and place.

Sometimes it happens to me. I can be a really poor sleeper and sometimes when I’m struggling to sleep in the night that’s when ideas come to me. Even if I don’t write out full articles, sometimes I’ll jot down ideas in a notes document on my phone so I don’t forget them by the morning.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Franzel2oo
I know your pain amelia88. The mind has a way of being its busiest, at a time when it should be resting. The best thing to do in this situation is to take advantage of things and jot down those ideas. You never know which one of those ideas will lead you to write your next big story, article or content for whatever playform you write for.

If I wake up in the middle of the night/day with a bright idea, I'll just let my mind absorb it, play with it, then get back to sleep. No, I don't think I'll have the energy or motivation to write when I should be sleeping. I usually get by with 5 hours of sleep on regular days and I don't want to deprive my body of whatever rest it can get. If it's a real eureka moment, I'll likely remember it and I'll be in a better state of mind to write about it after a full night's sleep.

It is always advisable to make contents after we have gotten enough rest. This is something that is essential when we are talking about writing contents since it has a lot to do with what we write daily.

I am glad that I wake up in the middle of the night only to relieve myself of the fluid I drank at dinner and then I go straight back to bed and continue my sleep. Pardon me for saying this but most of the writers I know who are like that are the veteran writers who are seniors. They tell me that they couldn't sleep properly when their head is full of ideas that they would wake up by midnight to mull on those ideas. Instead of laying awake on the bed, it is better to just write so the ideas would clear the head.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Senior writers are geniuses and what's impressive is that they are so passionate about their trade. You were right by saying that they are insomniacs because they have a lot of things going on in their heads making it hard for them to sleep.

I value my sleep a lot and for that reason, I don't think that waking up in the middle of the night to make any content is ideal to me. I prefer to spend the time of the day writing instead of having to do it when everyone is meant to be sleeping.

No actually, never had done this. I work all day and when i get to my bed I sleep like a baby. I try to use those 5 hours of sleep as much as i can, because when i sleep less or when i sleep bad, my head hurts a lot on the next day.

Wow, I really want to be a heavy sleeper Sometimes because I am really a light sleeper and it is annoying how I easily gets awake by simple noises.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I've probably had that experience. But I'm not sure if it was exactly midnight. All I know is that once you wake up with a good story in mind, it's best to write down. You're likely to forget it a few moments after waking from sleep.

I actually do this because of my dream journal. I have a dream journal where I write down the things that I dream about such as events happening or anything I can remember. It helps me see a pattern and what did I dream during that day/night. It is quite fun and exciting because I get to remember rather than to forget what I have seen.

I don't wake at night just to write some ideas that come to my mind. When a new idea comes to my mind, I would not get up. I will just memorize and remember this the next day. I am tired of getting up and prefer to continue my sleep.

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to write on my freelancing sites because sometimes I feel motivated about it. I find it to be calm and very quite which helps me to have a good wrings. I feel that I can make some good ideas out of it that is why it is I wake up in the middle of the night especially if I have something that needs to finished on my freelancing works.

I have the same scenario, will I was suppose to sleep but then an idea just came o what I'm going to do with my story so I just note it on my notebook. So when morning came I just check it back and then right there I made a story. I use to do this because sometimes when I will just let it go, the next morning after I would totally forgot what it is.

I don't wake up and write in the middle of the night. But it happens sometimes when I can't fall asleep, suddenly some great sentence comes across and I just have to write it down. There is no way I am getting out of my bed, so I write it on my phone. And the funny thing is that when I wake up, usually the sentence is not great at all, actually is quite bad.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

On my experience I dream of scenarios then my brain wakes me up and I'll type a quick summary what I dreamed about then go back to sleep. I piece it together when I wake up in the morning. I have problems sleeping so as much as possible I don't give my brain a chance to fully wake up in the middle of the night because I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep at all and I'll have to wait until night time to get more sleep.

It's not only the time flies but so are the ideas. And yes some night I wake up just to write ideas. It's not because im kn.a deadline but I feel that I just have to do it. I feel like im in the zone that I can and I will awesome ideas.

Oh yes, for sure!
Especially when it's something grand, I simply canno't fall asleep. When I go to bed and attempt to fall a sleep, suddenly an idea comes to my mind and I wake up immediately, I run to my notebook and write everything down, because the upcoming next morning might result in me forgetting all the details.

This thing happens to me all the time. Like I'll get ideas at odd hours of the day so what I do is I take my phone and write it down. Then when I get to work, I review all of my ideas and work on it. I do stick to a fixed schedule though.

I don't actually right a book but as a student, there are times that I get required to write an article or a speech. Other than that, we get required to do things that exhausts us within the day. However, we need to finish the article or speech we are required to do. I rest a little and wake up at around 12-2AM. It is the best time for me to do schoolworks and everything because there are no distractions and I can give a hundred percent concentration on it.

If the Muses have spoken, I have to heed. I would immediately grab my phone and jot down everything. I am not someone with great memory so I know that If I let the night pass without writing, then I might as well get up late because I am sure as hell that I have already forgotten. Besides, does it not excite you enough that when you have been frustrated hitting a writer's block and then suddenly you figured it out?

I haven't experience something like that but one time long ago I did wake up from a dream and I hurriedly wrote the numbers I saw in my dream. Later on that day I bet on those numbers in a lottery for $.20 and won $10, I got 4 out of the 6 numbers in a lotto 6/42 game.

I hope I can do that. To wake up in the middle of the night to create a masterpiece. But unfortunately I wasn't able to do that because I am still awake even late at night so I can't wake up because I haven't sleep yet. However, that was a great idea, waking up in the middle of the night with a refresh mind and an inspired heart to create another masterpiece.

Sorry to hear you don't sleep. If you have problems sleeping every night, you might want to see a doctor, or take up meditation to help calm your mind and thoughts. I learned that insomnia usually happens because our busy mind keeps the body awake, sometimes by constantly secreting adrenaline through out the body. Not sure about the source though, so don't take this as medical advice.

Sometimes I am waking up in the middle night to continue working on my articles especially if I have some deadlines that need to deal with. It feels good to sleep when you are done with your task for the day since I will not have any regrets and it will helps me to have a peace of mind since I have done something good for the day.

I am a heavy sleeper so I don’t wake up easily. But I can’t sleep when something is bothering me. I don’t really think about writing before sleeping. It would keep me up all night. I try to finish my work before I sleep.

I never experience it yet but I heard some people used to do it. Some people believe that writing in the middle of the night makes you think more and your imagination would become wider and clearer.

There was a time I lost so many good ideas because I didn't bother writing them down the moment they came into my mind. I no longer lose anything these days. With my trusty pen and notebook by my side any time I stumble into something interesting I'll write it down even if it is late at night.

It is a good habit anyone can acquire.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

@mark8625 Yes it is true that sometimes we can get more clearer and better ideas when writing late at night based on my previous experiences. The only problem in doing these is that sometimes we wake up late in the morning because of spending sometime to write instead of going to bed to have some rest overnight.

Quite often, I will awaken with the perfect idea, and depending on my laziness factor, I will either try to scribble it down quickly before I forget it, or tuck it away in my skull for morning and hope I remember. (I seldom do.) The problem is, the scribbled note that seemed so important at 2 am, often doesn't read quite so well by the light of the day. I will wonder just how loopy or asleep I was while writing that incredibly important notation, as it now makes no sense whatsoever. Perhaps my night-time perfect ideas aren't so great after all.

If I get ideas or happen to have an epiphany in the middle of the night, I usually get up to jot it down really quickly. But I don't write anything until I'm rested, and refreshed the very next day.

This is the reason why my phone is always beside me. Whenever I have a good idea out of nowhere or woke up from a very interesting dream, I just navigate my phone and type in some phrases or keywords which I will work on when I wake up in the morning. I use to do this because it is easy for me to always forget important things.

I remember an experience where an idea pops out in my dreams. Actually it is not just an idea but the exact answer that I really need. Me and my friends once had a friendly debate or argument in regards to a particular religious topic. The discussion went too late in the evening and were not yet done. So we decided to go home and continue the discussion the next day. While I am sleeping, I heard a voice whisper to me about a particular verse in the Bible and when I woke up, I look for that verse and it was the exact verse that I'm looking for. Sometimes idea also came in your dreams.

Yes. I write at all sorts of ridiculous times. When an idea hits, it is hard to wait to get it written down. To lose an idea woould be such a shame. Somehow, the laptop stays on the bed, whereas in days past, there was a notebook and pen, ready to catch my thoughts and store them when I wake up. The one thing I avoid at night is any formatting. It is too easy to make a mistake.

Well, I have done this on multiple occasions and I have seen that sometimes it's actually a good time to write if the topic to write on comes to mind in that time of the night.

I have had some dreams and came up with a new topic to write and immediately I woke up, I'm writing it immediately or I would forget it.

This has happened to me once and I tried to sleep it off but my mind was already working on the story and I knew I needed to write it down or else there will be no sleep for me that night. On regular days I mostly write during the morning after a script writer teacher of mine advised me to write immediately after waking up, before I eat breakfast, before I even brush my teeth. He said that it was the time of day when his mind was the freshest and hoped that it would work for me too.

Yes, I do wake up at night and write it is usually around 1 am or 2 am. I prefer writing at night rather than the morning maybe because I am I night person or some people would like to call a night owl.

Since I'm a Sunset person or a Night owl, I usually do my work at night. I enjoy working at night because the environment is quiet and peaceful and I can think clearly during night time when everyone is asleep. I listen to calming, instrumental music at the same time when I'm writing. It's like every idea and right words to say just come to me so smoothly.
