Talent is defined in the dictionary as somebody with exceptional ability and somebody with an unusual natural ability to do something well while skill as an ability to do something very well or something requiring training to do well. Looking at the definitions of both relating it to creative writing. It can be viewed that creative writing could be a talent and or a skill.

Creative writing as a talent.
-- Humans have a natural ability of doing things naturally. Writing ability can be innate to a certain persons, however if this talent were not developed overtime. Chances are, it will totally go to waste and unused.

Creative writing as a skill.
-- It is established that some persons could have a natural talent for writing. However, we still need to develop and learn these skills for us to be able to fully realize the potential of our writing skills. We should not be sad if talent in writing is not inborn to us. Creative writing can be a learned skill, all we need to do is to train ourselves and learn the skills needed for writing which can be learned over time.

In my opinion, creative writing is 10% talent and 90% skill. Creative writing as any other endeavors, requires training and practice before it is developed fully.

I think that talent and skill are the same thing. Because you need skill to be talented and vice versa. Either way, you need both to be a creative writer.

I am confused too, what's the difference between the two.

I had a deep thought of them both but couldn't figure out any differences among them.

Talent is inborn which means it's already wired in a person's system which means it's a God given ability. A skill on the other hand means expertise, something that you put a lot of time and effort to develop. That's the difference between them.

I think you got the right differentiation between talent and skill.

Yea that's true, they are both almost alike and are good together.

In my own opinion I think they are the same too. Talent and skill should always been team up so that the work must be better.

Hi there Mark!
In my opinion, it's not exactly true, even though they can work together. I think that talent is something natural you have, while skill is something acquired.

It's really not the same talent is within you the day you we're born and skill is something that you've learned by practicing it and by repetition by doing the same thing over and over again to refine it to probably achieve master, but yes having both will make you a successful in life.

This is really an informative comment, I honestly don't know the difference between the two.

They may be but I dont know of any difference as at now.

So do I. I was thinking what is the difference the two but I could not imagine if there is any.

Either of which, I would take them both as a blessing no matter what differences they have. Both of them are needed to be developed in order for them to be fully acquired.

It honestly think it's a combination of both. You may be born creative, but in order for you to reach different heights, you must develop your skills and enhance it. Anyway, I always envy those who are born with gifts and innate talent.

I agree that it is, indeed, a combination of both. Some people are really creative and are really good with their imagination. But in order to turn them into words or stories, you need to have the skills. Creative writing comes naturally to some and some are through hard work and training. I have read that when the mind focuses on something, such as creative writing, it will produce it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
I agree with you, even if you are really creative without skills you will still have not so great works.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yea exactly, a good writer needs the both of those skill to perform excellently in writing.

Definitely agree. You need to have the inner inspiration, to be able to turn thoughts or ideas into a poet. But, you also need to prepare yourself to make it a good one. So, many people can be a creative writer, but very few will be good ones, or at least ones that can inspire you and connect with you. A creative writer needs feelings, but also good grammar, punctuation, and education.

Thanks for sharing your idea and I am also agree with you. Talent is very important specially in creative writing because it needs some level of imagination and creativity. Also, to be a good writer, academic foundation and a lot of practice are needed to enhance this talent. Creative writer must consider grammar and formal education.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Would you say inner inspiration is the talent? I'd say the inspiration part is rather something more ideological. Which later on transforms into something, in case you have the necessary skills and talents.

For most of the people painting, music and writing is some thing that needs to be learned, and relying at the interest and application of the individual learning, that individual can turn out to be pretty great in their craft. No person is born completely shaped and genius with the capability to do something particular, and to do each aspect of that capability.

I think it can be a skill and at the same time a talent. Writing can be learn same with the others like painting, music and etc., but it is your passion how driven and committed you are o what you are doing.

I agree with you. Writing is something that you may or may not possess innately, but, you can definitely improve and be passionate about your craft. This, you'll be able to enhance your skill.

Talent needs to exist in a measure, but a true artist or writer always wants to study to make the talent great. They will want to ensure they have all the tools in their repetoire to more than mediocre and this is where the element of skill comes in. You can learn all you want about writing and develop the skill, but it will show if the creative spark is missing.

I think that creative writing is an art and therefore it needs some inborn talent in order to pursue it. However, one has to develop the necessary skills in order to communicate effectively with the audience. All creative skills need a lot of polishing before one becomes an accomplished artist. Therefore, a writer can have the inborn creative skills of writing but it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to master the skills of writing and become successful as professional in this field.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

For me, creative writing is both a talent and an art. Creativity I believe is an innate ability, an inborn talent, it is why there are some people who don't possess it. Writing is a skill that needs to be practiced a lot in order to achieve perfection. A person must also study vocabulary, grammar, etc. in order to properly convey thoughts and feelings into words.

I think it can be both. I think that part of it comes from a labor of love - so it’s a bit of an innate thing. But I think anyone interested in writing can learn the craft and continually better themselves. It’s one of the wonderful things about being a writer!

I think it's both. Maybe you are born talented but still you have to be dedicated to earn the skill. Maybe you are born creative but still at somehow you'll learn other things that can nourish your skills.

You are right. It is the skill that's developed overtime that makes your talent in writing flourish. Both of them should go together.

I consider myself a writer just a few years ago when I became a co-blogger and had some articles published in a major magazine here. But I cannot say that I am a creative writer because I only write in a straightforward way to express what I want. A creative writer is one who can write in an artistic way. I guess you need the talent which is natural or God-given to be a creative writer. You can learn the skills to write but you cannot learn to be creative.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ballyhara
Well that's true. I have do some writings over my life too, but that's just like an expression of maybe some crucial moments, or experiences that I needed to take out. But, I don't have the tools to be considered a creative writer, not everyone can make a proper artistic writing, one that you can feel related to, and that makes you feel exactly the way the writer wants you to.

Jeane
You may have a talent for writing but that by itself doesn't make you a really good writer. You'd need to read a lot, write every day, get your work reviewed by peers so you get to know the mistakes you are making. Fail to do this and you'll never be able to write well enough to impress your readers.

Creative writing takes both talent and skill for one to stand out but before they do, they have to work really hard to master the craft.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Bravosi
It's obviously both, it's a skill that comes off as a talent. Some skills are acquired, while others are born with. A person could craft his writing skill a lot, but another one who barely does just has a knack for it, in the form of a talent. If he increases that talent with time as well, then he will be a supreme writer.

Creative writing for me is a combination of both talent and skill. From the word itself "creative writing" says it all. "Creative", being creative is not just skill but more of a talent. To do something exceptionally excellent and "Writing", more of a skill. To write something technically and grammatically excellent. So for me creative writing is a combination of both skill and talent.

Creativity is a born talent that develops into skills in the later years. Our experience, knowledge and understanding is a great influence to hone one's ability. It takes time to enhance the ability and not everyone has patience with it. Our uniqueness is always a living edge among others.

That is the thing as we have to keep improving so as to get better with what we are doing. This is something that has got to do with creative writing as you may not really get better if you don't learn as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You can improve even when you don't have the talent as well. What is important for us to understand is that for one to be a creative writer, there is need to learn some things that will ensure the person gets better with it. This is something that is crucial for us to understand as well.

Creative writing is a talent. However I think that like anything in life you can acquire creative writing skills. In today's world nothing is impossible. However I don't believe that you will be as good as someone who has creative writing as a natural talent. Also when you have the talent you still need to build on it and acquire the skills to fully explore your talent. Good examples are J.K Rowlings who is the most successful author and richest in history yet she took years and years to write her stories and develop her skills.

I'd say it's a talent. Only because a skill is something learned or something you are trained to do. A talent is something pre-existing which you can improve upon or hone.

Creative writing is sure to be a skill. Having that skill in creativity is a work of art where you can to write things in your own words that make a bigger picture than others would expect. The best example of this kind of skill is free writing or also being able to write your own stories. If you were to put your creative writing on display, many people will start to adore it and there will be some who won't appreciate it at all. But believing in yourself and doing what you want to do is best.

For me, it doesn't matter if it's a skill or talent as long as you'll nurture and develop it, you'll get the results that you want. Writing is something that everyone is capable of doing there are just some people who excel because they spent time and effort on developing it.

I think, anything that we want needs to be develop and time must be invested. We can't expect result without working for it. Our hard work and determination is always a factor to be successful in any chosen field. Thou, I believe creativity is talent and skills is acquire but both are useful in human personality.

That is why patience is a key to success. Success don't come overnight, you have strive hard to get it. I agree that determination is something that must always be present when you are still on your progress. Without it, it may be impossible for a person to reach their goals.

Yes, I agree with you. Everyone should have patience and determination to succeed. Without it, everything fails. Our dreams will motivate us to work hard. Achievement is a good reward on efforts we exerted. It will be a great feeling in every fulfillment we made.

Creative writing are sure to be a talent .Why?Because there are people who were born talented and with special ability to write. There are people who are born with huge imagination to tell a story effectively through writing.Talent in writing is a gift that you have to maintain and improve.

I think that creative writing is a talent for me because I believe that not all are given the chance to write great articles but although all of us know how to write but not all are blessed to have such an exceptional talent. We can easily write great and interesting articles if we have the talent to make some words turns into a fabulous one. This is one of things that ordinary people can't do since they are only few who can make it to happen.

Creative writing is both talent and skill. If one has an inborn talent to write fiction,it doesn't mean that all they can do is sit back, relax and write.A writer has to get proper training both at the beginning and during the entire writing life.
Trends in writing keep changing just like in any other field.A good writer should stay relevant through acquisition of skills on top of talent.

For me, there are two parts of creative writing:

The creativity aspect (which requires talent), then the quality of writing aspect (which requires skill and experience). You can be a very creative person but could be bad at writing. You can also be the best writer but have sub-par creative ideas (that's why some people are better at writing non-fiction than fiction).

Which aspect of writing you are good at mostly decides on what type of writing you should do.

Creative writing is a natural talent. Because not all people can imagine things in a very magical way and put it into writing. Not all writers can do a story that can bring others to the other world. That's a talent, you just need to get focus and imagine fantastic things. But it is also a talent that needs more practice to enhance and make a better one.

I think you need a talent and skills for this to be a creative writer. It's good to have a talent for that but its better if you also have skills since you really have to learn more ways to improve your writing so you just have to enhance your talent.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think so too. It's kind of both since it's a skill and a talent. You can be really good at it from the very beginning. But you can still improve no matter how bad you are at it. What matters is that you put in the time and effort to actually excel in writing.

Creative writing is about both the talent and the skill where talent comes fiest, and the skill second. The talent is innate, something you are born with. The skill is learning to execute your talent following established and accepted norms.

I should add that, while talent and skill both go together, you can do without talent and still be successful. Acquiring the skills can help you do the things people who have talent can do. But creativity without skill is a pure waste of gifts.

For me, it is a talent. Honestly, I lack creativity on my writings. I don't have fillers in my writings that makes my work entertaining or would catch the attention of the readers or the audience. For that reason, I focused more on informative writings than on poetry and anything where creativity would be helpful. I could only make good informative writings but not writings that can entertain most audience. It is not a bad thing though. Some people appreciate my works more than the work of others with fillers in their works. It is just a matter of perceptions of different people.

It is a skill. Because you see talent is something you know how to do since the age of two or three... But creative writing? You first need to read a lot to have that SKILL. A good writer that doesn't read also does not exists.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think creative writing could be a talent and a skill depending on the person who practices it. If a person without proper knowledge is able to create a good one, it is considered a talent. On the other hand, anyone who is willing and able to have practice even though he/she started with zero knowledge can acquire it as a skill to be learned and enhanced.

I feel that creative writing is both a skill and a talent. Not everyone can write in a creative manner. I mean, let's face it. There are some people that are writers, but their writing is not creative at all. It can be very monotone. Or just downright boring.

Creative writing is a talent because it is not something that everyone can do. And it is a skill because there are times when you have the knack for being creative, while at other times you can write, but not in the most creative manner.

Creative writing is both a talent and a skill. It can be an inborn talent. You can be born with having a creative mind and talent in writing. But even though you are not born with it, it doesn't mean that you cannot develop it. You can develop your skills in writing and improve yourself if you really want to be a good writer. If writing is your passion, you will seek to improve your writing skills non-stop. Self-improvement should not stop. And we should never cease to learn. Seek to improve yourself everyday to be a better person that would contribute more to society.

Yes, I can consider creative writing as a talent but it also can be considered as a skill yes it is a little bit confusing let me explain. Creative writing is a skill and just like all skill writing it can be learned by putting your time and effort in practicing creative writing you can be quite good, but here comes the talent part some people just better than other even without proper training and hard work. Yes, it is unfair but I do believe that hard work can always beat talent. Like if you agree!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jaymish3
@antoToledo I believe that you have explained it perfectly. They are some people who write without any training and their creative writing is flawless at least in terms of the story. I think that they would need help with the technical parts like spelling and grammar but they are editors for that. I think creative writing is the hardest part of writing that I know of. They are millions of stories out there its just hard to find a good one.
