Do you care about spelling and grammar online?

A lot of people on social media sites tend not to care too much about spelling and grammar because it usually sites that you can relax a bit. And because of how young some of the people on social media sites are, you tend to not care too much about spelling or proper punctuation. However, it is the total opposite of this on blog posts and certain forums. You tend to use proper grammar and you tend to make sure that you spell properly. Of course, this is not the case for everyone. But do you care about spelling and grammar when posting online?

Depends on how public my posts are going to be. Trying to write with proper grammar online as much as possible is good practice and builds your skills. It also makes people take you more seriously; there are people that might make pretty good arguments or post great content and get passed over due to poor grammar. I also feel that writing without caring for grammar makes you used to it and then you have to do some extra checks on professionally intended work so you don't make mistakes.

A good piece of writing devoid of grammar and spelling mistakes is like music with no false notes. No matter how lenient a site is it should be the endeavour of all writers to bring out their best.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The analogy you did between writing and music was very good (fits perfectly like a glove haha) and I totally agree with you on this. We should always offer and do our best (it's a must... at least for those who cherish with their own work).

There is a site I am on where spelling and grammar is not important for a post to be accepted. Users take advantage of this and just do not bother to take care. Even native speakers take advantage of it and just post any rubbish.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think in this case, people's laziness speaks louder (especially if they post without any kind of concern other than the fact that they are earning - financially speaking - something about it). But don't they realize that they won't get very far that way?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
We are not supposed to point out errors there and that is actually not a good thing. I am sure there would be many there who would appreciate if their errors were pointed out. A habit of writing bad English will affect where good English is called for.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
That would be great (because it would be very helpful to them), but unfortunately that kind of attitude can be frowned upon by people who usually write - whether deliberately or not - wrongly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
Constructive criticism should not be frowned upon. But these days no one likes it and with the kind of sites that we have where such errors are not take seriously learning will be a distant future.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
Unfortunately I have to agree with you (but I wish I could say that I do not agree), However, there are still many people with good sense who know how to accept when they receive constructive criticism, then... Not everything is as lost as it seems.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
You are right there. I would certainly be happy if my mistakes were pointed out. Digressing a bit from here. There was this friend of mine who had bad breath. I pointed it out to her and she was ever grateful. Constructive criticism is rare these days.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

wiseagent
I'm also part of the team that knows how to receive - and take advantage of - constructive criticism. When someone points out some mistake I'm always grateful because it was through them that I managed to get rid of some my bad habits.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Minding one's own business has become a way of life. Even if those like you would any day welcome constructive criticism it is hard to come by. But talking about it behind one's back continues.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

If the world were made up of more people who knew how to accept constructive criticism, everything would be a little better. By the way, not only how to receive but also how to make constructive criticism.

yeah it depends on how you work hard to learn on how propper english grammar.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, it ends up being a particular effort that has to start from the people themselves because from the moment you don't mind improving something, no matter how much advice you receive... You won't be able to improve anything.

I am an avid user of things to help make what I write online look good. It isn't hard to install things like the free version of Grammarly into your web browser and this helps you to think about the mistakes you make as you write. It is also a good way to ensure correct spelling. When I read what others have written I do find my eyes glazing over if the post is poorly written.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I depend so much on that red line that is placed under words that I need to correct. That red line saves us from embarrassing mistakes. I have a built in spell check in my Chrome browser.

I think that you make a good point here--sort of a "use it or lose it" philosophy. If you keep practicing good grammar and spelling with your writing constantly, then your process should become easier, and the better you get at it, editing should become more and more fluid. I try to edit as I go for these issues, but I also always try to proofread something before I submit it under any format or circumstance. However, even though I try hard at this, I still miss stuff from time to time. We are all only human.

I agreed. It's a best practice to start learning to write with good grammar and spelling. By not checking the grammar can lead to a different meaning so I advise to check it very well before posting it. If they have a problem checking their grammar or spelling, I suggest using a Grammarly add-on as it helps you show your mistakes in grammar and spelling. You can visit grammarly.com and just install their add-on. Good luck. Do you care about spelling and grammar online?

I have to agree with you. Whenever you are constructing a sentence, may it be online or for professional purposes, you have to follow the rules of the language you are using. So definitely, spelling and grammar has to be considered all the time.

Yeah, if I post something on social media, for example, I get more conscious of my spelling and grammar in my posts since people there know me personally and I don't want to commit mistakes. When writing online, I also get conscious but more because I need to do my work professionally and my reputation is on the line. However, for more casual discussions, I just speak my mind freely and I rarely double check my comments before submission.

I agree. Even if you are posting status or comments in social media sites, it is still recommended to be formal to whatever you are going to say. It is good to watch your grammar and at the same time the spelling of every word so that you will be practiced once you compose a content in formal forums and blogs.

I do agree that writing with the proper grammar and spelling whatever form, platform or the subject is should always be the norm. But sadly if you scan social media posts, you'll see a great deal of content posted with very awful grammar and spelling.

I consider myself a very perfectionist in this aspect because it doesn't matter which audience I am writing for... I always worry about writing as correctly as possible. I always review my articles over and over again before being satisfied.

I know I make some mistakes (after all, I'm human... haha), but I always try to be very attentive.

Well, it depends on many factors, where am typing at and whom am typing to. When am making a public post, that will be read by the general public, i do make sure my spellings and grammar are correct.
But if am typing to my friends, I don't usually care about the spellings, I don't even type correct words, I use shortened words to communicate with my friends. So it depends on the platform, If am writing an article, then it's a must that my grammars and spellings are correct.

I am very particular about grammar and spelling even if the site in question does not mind posts with grammar and spelling mistakes. A well written post gives me satisfaction. Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do the same things as you. I always cared for my writing because writing it wrong bothers me a lot. I know that sometimes mistakes happen, but this is a kind of harm that affects us all, human beings (so, I'm ok with them once in a while).

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

All those facilities that are created should be far better utilized than they really are. But I think unfortunately most people seem to be too lazy for this (which by the way, is a shame).

What I notice is most here are only eager to earn while this facility has opened doors not only to practice writing but also to share our knowledge. I can proudly say that I have shared quite a bit of knowledge even though sometimes I may have searched for it on the net. And what about interaction at the global level? For me that is the best thing that has happened to me in this exercise.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think interaction at the global level is one of the most magical things these facilities can bring. I mean, you can talk to people all over the world without ever leaving your chair, haha... This is pretty awesome (especially when people write well)!

My real life contacts and I hardly share any interests including my own siblings. I have several friends but they are not computer savvy. We are seniors and they have not taken interest in learning computers simply because they think they will not pick up.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This is so sad, isn't it? it's a pity they think like that.

I'm from the younger generation, but most of my friends who live next to me don't have the same types of interests as I do... So, a considerable part of my friends with whom I end up establishing a more frequent contact are my virtual friends.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This state of affairs does not augur well for the world. Imagine we have nothing to say to people next door but have lots to say to people globally. At the same time when the Net was not available we just carried on with relationships despite there being nothing in common.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I understood what you meant, sometimes we need to talk about something that people on our side don't want to hear or the amount of people is not enough.

So using the internet to expose our thoughts ends up being the best way.

I am the same way. I just try to make my own writing as correct as I could and that's about it, and I also find satisfaction when I see this trait in others. I admit I am very peeved when I see grammatical errors online, especially when it's made by million dollar companies, but I guess it is just a lot more acceptable nowadays and losing sleep over someone else's work isn't really all that practical anyway. I still cringe a lot when I see people write things like "should of" instead of "should have" in comments sections though.

When I am writing in a professional capacity, spelling and grammar are of equally high importance as factual veracity and proper SEO optimization! These are the foundational principals of language. You necessarily cannot be expected to handle the more "important" matters if you have demonstrated incompetence in the "little things". To be clear, I have demonstrated incompetence in matters of spelling, and have several times on this site acknowledged my own shortcomings in that area. Like many others of my generation who grew up with word processors, I am very fortunate to have spell checkers as a cognitive prosthesis.

Having said all of that, if I'm simply typing some self-serving status update on a social media site, I'm probably not going to go out of my way to apply a rigorous editing process. If a spelling or grammar mistake slip by in that medium, so be it.

I try to care as much as possible when it comes to spelling and grammar. To be honest, I see a lot of people from different sorts of forums wherein they feel like they are so good and all but as I read their posts, I see a lot mistakes. I mean, it's fine by me since I try not to care on how well they do with their writings. I just don't like it when they try to brag about it in some way. Anyway, mistakes are normal specially when we write. When I make threads or posts such as this one, I sometimes forget a few words and would end up messing the grammar and sentence structure. Do you care about spelling and grammar online?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
If I'm posting on a forum, I tend to get a little sloppy with my posts. It's nothing crazy, but I might misspell a word here or leave out a word there. If I catch it after I've posted my comment, I'll go back and correct it, but otherwise I don't think it's a huge deal as long as people can understand what I'm trying to say.

Now if I'm typing an email to a client, that's a whole different thing. I'll reread what I wrote several times to make sure everything sounds good, is spelled right, and makes perfect sense before I send it off.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

galegatling
Same goes for me. I have this habit of speed typing everything what's on my mind and it's like I don't even know where to stop. I sometimes make one sentence with almost three lines and that shouldn't happen in my opinion. I do that too, try to go back and edit my posts if I still can but other forums won't allow edits.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's literally me TheArticulate. Most of the time though my posts are pretty good because I also use Grammarly so it tends to pickup my mistakes as I type them and will highlight them for me. So usually I will go and fix the problems when I finish typing the message. But depending on the forum or blog, sometimes I will just ignore Grammarly and post it especially if it is just a small punctuation or spelling error. But it's totally different if it's an email or message to a client or someone important. I will make sure that everything is perfect and I will go over the message multiple times to make sure it is fine.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I think that I can also be a bit sloppy in forums as well, from time to time. Still, I feel there is no excuse for this, and I am always really hard on myself when I make such errors. I hate looking at a post which I can;t edit and seeing errors staring back at me from the screen. I think to myself that I am much better than that, and it annoys me. I think I might even be a bit obsessive-compulsive about this, truth be told, but I try to be as revised and edited as possible before I submit my words.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
I am with you on this. Where time is of the essence one can ignore those small mistakes specially if the meaning of what is meant to be expressed does not get distorted. Obviously one cannot afford to make mistakes for example while sending official mail.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

TheArticulate
Right? It's interesting how we devote differing levels of standards to our writing depending on the source, sometimes. My sister writes very well, but when she texts me, she doesn't correct any mistakes she makes unless they're major mistakes. This leads to odd capitalization, misspelled words, weird punctuation and the likes.

It's very interesting, to say the least.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iamawriter
As far as I am concerned however no matter what writing it is I will take care to see that it is written perfectly - more in my own interest. If I ignore my grammar and spelling where it is allowed I will soon start producing mediocre stuff even where quality writing is expected.

When I was younger I used to spell badly and didn't care much about proper grammar. I thought that writing short and improper was "cooler" but my perspective has changed drastically over the years. Now, I always use proper spelling and grammar - it doesn't matter where I am writing. Whether it's on my blog, my Facebook, my Twitter or even over the texts. I just find the bad grammar very off-putting Do you care about spelling and grammar online? I don't mind if my friend uses it when he/she texts me but other than that, nope. But hey, nobody is perfect and I do mistakes. However, I try my best to either correct or minimize them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Unless I'm trying to make a point or a joke, I usually try and write with the best grammar and spelling as possible. I've never been one to put either of those things in the backseat while I'm writing. I don't know why, but I've never abbreviated while I text, either. I chalk it up to good habits, and the desire to appear as professional as possible online as much as I can, I suppose.

Plus, it's good practice to strive to write with the best grammar and spelling as possible!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't abbreviate also when I text. I feel like I don't want to abbreviate unless it doesn't look awkward or something. I am used to not abbreviating and doing any text shortcuts like "K" or "wtv" or any other common abbreviations when it comes to texting and chatting and even here. I am always disciplined and I don't want to be like some people who would do shortcuts when it comes to words and phrases or sentence construction.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I get you. I typically don't use "lol" or "lmao" in my texts like a lot of my friends do, but I find myself typing out "haha" when I want to show that I'm amused in place of either of those abbreviations. I don't know why I am this way, but it's how I've always been ever since I've had a phone that has allowed me to text (so like, since I was 13 or so?).

I suppose it's a good habit to have, though!

Yes, I do check on my spellings before I hit the submit button. It is better to write a proper English comment so that your readers can understand what you are saying. Otherwise, they are put off by your mistakes over the time and you would not see any new followers coming in.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Making me understood by what I'm writing is also one of my concerns when I comment on something. I don't like the feeling of writing something that is not clear to other people (especially if they are my assiduous readers).

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I know that everyone makes mistakes in their writing; this is inevitable. However, I make a very strong effort to either avoid spelling or grammar mistakes or to proofread my writing before I post it or present it. I feel that the quality of my writing represents me as a professional, and I want to be perceived as someone who cares about what they do and as someone who puts an effort into it. I especially try to proofread, revise, and edit all of my blogs before I post them, and when I am using social media to promote myself, I try to avoid errors altogether. No matter how good your content is, if it is chock-full of spelling and grammar errors, your readers will most likely not appreciate it, and they may even distrust, to a degree, what you are trying to say because it looks sloppy or just thrown together in a seemingly devil-may-care way.

Exactly, everybody can make a mistake, specially on grammar or spelling. But i do appreciate to read an article, a book, a magazine, that respect the usual grammar rules. To me, who loves to read, it's really annoying to read anything with huge mistakes. I used to have a professor on college, who used to take points from your evaluations, for every mistake on grammar or spelling, he says that a good professional needs to give an example of the type of education that is receiving. For sure we all were really cautious when answering his tests.

I care about my own spelling and grammar, but that's about it. I admit I cringe a little bit sometimes when I see people making grammatical mistakes in comments, and there are a few specific ones that I would consider to be strong pet peeves, but I try not to give it much thought beyond that because I realize that not everyone in the world will be correct all the time. I try and remember that a lot of non-English speaking countries post, so I shouldn't be too harsh in judging people's grammar and spelling online.

Yes, because when it comes online, people mostly communicate through posts. Grammar and spelling have big effects on relaying messages. Wrong grammar and spelling can lead to misunderstanding given that words are the only basis with the absence of real life emotions in the online world.

At the end of the day, I really think that it depends on the person writing and where he or she is posting. For instance, if you are paid to do posts and threads or reviews, then it is expected that you do your best and make little no no errors as much as possible. On the other hard, if it's forums such as this, community discussions and general chat forums, I think it is fine if you have some errors as long as the thought or whatever it is that you are trying to say can easily be understood. ^_^

Absolutely. I'm that guy. You know, the one who is constantly typing in complete sentences and perfect grammar/spelling even while texting or just making random forum posts. Among my circle of friends, I'm pretty well known for my typos online because my mobile keyboard is just too small for me to be able to really write anything properly. I care about spelling and grammar everywhere, including online. It's very important to practice correct spelling and grammar at all times because it makes the thought of your sentences clear. Wrong spelling and grammar can sometimes change the message you want to portray. It makes the message really confusing. It is also important when you are posting online, especially if you are promoting something or when you are saying something really important for your attraction marketing. Correct spelling and grammar is also beneficial if you are a freelancer. You can monetize such skill as a freelancer. You will most likely be preferred by clients if you practice excellent spelling and grammar in your write ups. Practice correct spelling and grammar all the time and maximize its benefits.

I've had the same experience. Typing on the phone can be hard.

I care about grammar a lot. I do my best to write with proper phrasing, good use of words, and correct punctuation. But auto-correct can sometimes make it difficult due to its technical nature. It helps with checking for proper spelling, but using it on the phone can be bothersome as it automatically replaces certain words with different ones.

Hahaha, phones and gadgets weren't made for proper spelling. Seriously, I have this issue too. The only bad thing about it, is that you can get used to it, and start using those short words or spelling for day by day writing. Happened to me once, and honestly i felt very embarrassed. So, whenever i have time and patient enough, I write all my texts and messages with proper grammar and spelling, so my mind and hands don't become lazy about it.

Yes, I do care about my spelling and grammar when posting online. I always review my sentences for wrong spelled words and correct my grammar before posting online. For me it is not an excuse to have wrong grammar/spelling when your in a hurry or simply because it is much more convenient than checking every misspelled words before posting. I think correcting those mistakes is important because it is the reason why we study, to learn the correct way of writing, to convey our message clearly, to avoid misunderstandings and it is also a way of representing yourself to the readers.

I care about it as much as one normally would. Meaning a small misspelled word here or there isn't going to get me to disavow an article or blog. HERE and THERE. If the writer has a bunch of grammatical errors, misspelled words, punctuation issues etc. Then that's a problem. But one or two tiny ones in a 1 or two page piece isn't anything to flip out over.

Agree. Spelling and grammar shows more than just a nice writing. If you really love your native tongue, and you want to be consider educated please do yourself a favor and improve on that field. I remember how my cousin used to be very smart, but then she started college and one of her teachers called on her, she had the material to do perfect and incredible essays, but all of them were terrible at grammar and spelling. She said that made her feel sad and embarrassed about herself, which took her to improve and make herself a better student and professional. She feels good that someone made her see how wrong she was, and how good she got to be thanks to it.

Yes you are right. We are not perfect so I think it's natural to commit mistakes. I think formal sites should really have to be careful in writing their content and check their spelling and grammar as there are people who likes to mock your work and we can't avoid being bash because of mistakes. It would be better to check and consult from the experts. If it is informal, I think it's okay to commit mistakes.
