Had a hard time understanding different accents.

I have tried transcription jobs before and had a really hard time at first understanding different accents. It took me a long time to finish my work. I would say I got used to different accents after my second week. How about you? Have you tried transcription jobs? Did you find it hard understanding words when subjects talk fast and talk over each other? How long did it take for you to get used to the work?

I haven't tried transcription as a job. But, I did try it once in a sample video. It was not a good experience. I was not able to finish the video since it's difficult to understand the accent. Aside from that, coping up with the speaker is a lot more disappointing. It feels like chasing a horse in a race. I felt so exhausted. Thou, I find it a challenging task but it needs patience and understanding. Listening and typing skills are the great advantage in this field.

Transcribing is not for everybody. I also had a hard time even with the sample video but I was determined to really try it and see if it is for me and I can do it part time. I only lasted a couple of months before calling it quits. The extra income I got from doing it to the stress level it provided wasn't worth it.

You are right. Transcription job is not for everyone. Listening on those accented words that I barely don't understand makes me feel useless and helpless. There's too much stress in this field considering the nature of the work. But, I am glad I tried it to see myself oriented with it's challenges.

I just tried a test on one of the sites and I was given 20 minutes to transcribed an audio and I failed badly. Well I'm not giving up will try to do better with more tutorials and training

Oh really? I'm so sorry. I've been there too, because for example English is not my native language, so I feel that I'm all the time under a test. And if you're given a certain time, then you have extra pressure, and your stress level rise up way to much. Don't give up, you just keep practicing your listening skills, watch movies, TV shows, anything that improves and acostume your ears.

Yes, I agree with you. Getting yourself oriented with the nature of transcription job will surely help to improve the skills. It takes a passion to literally survive in this field. Patience and determination is a must.

Well, I've done some transcriptions, and it can be defiant sometimes. That usually happens with very marked accents, that sometimes can cause distortion of the regular way it is pronounced. And yes, coping up with the speaker more than disappointing is frustrating. For sure, listening is put to the test.

I do transcription on the side and I understand how difficult it is to try to understand highly accented audio files. I usually get a low grade with those even though I felt I had 'guessed' most of the words right. And I can relate to what you said that it feels like chasing a horse in a race.

I can understand different accents pretty easily. I think because I watch movies from all corners of the world. The problem is the quality of audio. It is also said with transcription that with practice you will get better. The challange with transcription is learning the rules and sticking to them. Also following the punctuation and grammar rules can be a problem.

I agree. When I first tried transcribing, there are a lot of rules to be considered in which it is somehow hard to keep in mind right away. Truly, it takes a matter of practice and patience to be able to be successful with transcribing.

I thought I would have an easier time understanding accents because of the frequency of me watching films and television series but its different when you don't have the luxury of having a screen in front of you and can rely on lip reading as well. The quality of the audio files is one of the culprit too. I would have exerted more effort had the pay been much higher.

Totally feel you. There's nothing so frustrating, than knowing what they're talking about, and having a lot of scratchy sounds in the back. Also, those rules about how you should do it, they can get on my nerves, and about grammar, that's considered a must, so yes, you can get a lot of problems when it comes to it. Transcription jobs are super demanding about grammar and spelling.

I tried a transcription job before. I'm used to hearing different English accents because most of my friends are foreigners. And yes I'm not a native English speaker, I'm actually from Asia. We've always had group calls and since we're from all over the world it's a mix of different accents. The only problem I had with transcribing is the pay.

You can get good paying sites from BMF just check the GPT section of the site and you will see reviews on transcription sites that pays well but one has to be really good.

Where do I get those and how? I've done transcriptions before, and I'm searching every day for newer platforms to try out. So can you please share that information in a more detailed way? That would be really appreciated.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

What's BMF? Do they have a site? I might try transcription jobs again if the pay is decent on those sites they have there. My writing job is currently slow, I'm struggling a bit with articles because of personal things. Having something else to do might help keep my mind off it.

I tried to apply at gotranscript but it failed because of having a hard time to understand the accent in video. Although it is a good experience.

Oh I am the same. I have no clue where I have gone wrong. Could it have been the words or the format that I have used. Anyways, I will give another try at it. hehe

I have tried to study transcribing but I wasn't able to continue to register on the site. Because after studying the process, I have realized that the job was not fit for my schedule. I have a lot of things to prioritize and I can't give too much time for transcribing.

Accent is one of the problems of transcriber especially if they are not that familiar with the accent of the subject. You will consume too much time before you can make the accurate transcription. However, after a few days, you will be used to it and it will no longer be a problem for you.

Transcription jobs are one of the hardest jobs you could find online. I will not recommend it. It pays low and takes a very long time to finish. There are also a lot of scam sites who offers such jobs.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Talking about scam sites there are loads of them online and one just have to be careful. But to get genuine ones, one just need to just check out some on BMF. The sites is very revealing about other earning sites.

I tried to take exams in rev but I failed to pass their exam. From my experience, I don't think I am fit with transcribing job as I admit, I have poor listening skills and sometimes I can't understand the words they are saying since sometimes they speak slang and their accent can be hard to understand most of the time.

It is a difficult job, to be honest. I think that one has got to be really good at this type of job before they can say that they have achieved a considerate level of success.

Good to hear that all you guys are making some positive progress with transcription and those who are not will get some great advice here. As for me the jobs were too complex and I chose to stick with writing.

Seriously, writing is very much easier to transcription jobs. With writing, you get to dictate how you work and when you work but with transcription jobs, it's absolutely not the same thing.

Writing is definitely more easy to get into than transcription jobs.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, that's true. So far, I've had better experiences with writing instead of transcription. Which one do you consider is a good platform for writing? So far, I've found a lot of scam sites, and I would like to get a chance on a good serious one.

I have not done transcription work and I think that it is is the accent issues that is really holding me back. This is one job that is not really easy for people that want to do it and that is the reason we all should always try to work things out as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Exactly! If you are not very familiar with several languages, it's definitely going to be very difficult for you to succeed in transcription jobs.

I have given transcription jobs a few trials but I'm not really satisfied with the job, so I dropped it.

This reminds me of the story of my husband when he was assigned temporary work in London. There was no internet at that time and our communication was by postal mail. The first letter that I received from him was about his problem with communication because there is a difference in the pronunciation and the accent is confusing him. But after some time he got used to the accent that he said it was just a matter of listening very well.

The British accent is a hard one to understand. Even though it's English, they use a different set of words apart from the norm. Not to mention in London, there are also Irish and Scottish immigrants there and they speak every fast and hard to understand.

One thing that I hate so much about transcription jobs is that it's something that you can't do when you want because it's a time sensitive job.

When you fail to deliver your job when it's supposed to, you are definitely going to losing your money. But on a general note, transcription jobs are interesting.

Must be the benefit of living in America. So many people gave different accents. From New York to California and these are people born and raised in America. Then there are foreigners who come to the country who speak English but with an accent. My father was from The Bahamas and he has an accent. I just grew up listening to people who spoke with different accents. It was normal.

I have tried it once but I haven't finished it. At first I thought it is easy because I thought that you would just need to listen and type to their conversation. But I noticed how hard it is with different accents and speed when they are speaking. There are also murmuring around which cause the audio to get weird and unrecognizable.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

iambeth
I agree that some of the audios are very hard to transcribe. Sometimes the background chatter is more recognizable than the conversation you need to transcribe that it seems that the recorder is so far away from the speakers.

transcribing is not an easy thing to do. I had experience transcribing and I can say you need a lot of time to be frequently good at it. transcribing audio files with a bad audio is really hard in my own experience and it would take me 3-4 hours to transcribe 7-10 minutes audio, but if the audio file has an accent and I can't really understand the accent I would just abandon the work and look for another file. You cant transcribe properly if you can't understand anything.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

rlpzbeermoney
I've been in your situation. You'd expect that since the file is in English that they'll speak normally right? Accents just makes it harder. Even if you do take your time and do a decent "guess" of the words, you'll still get negative points from the proofreader and get lesser pay. I suggest not taking on transcription jobs from the paying sites. Finding a channel on Youtube I believe is better.

I agree completely. Accents are a very difficult thing to overcome, especially when you're not used to their pronunciation. Let's say you studied English in a Russian environment, that means you'll be able to understand the words they're saying, but highly unlikey that you will understand an Irish one (accent).

It absolutely is a difficulty especially to those who make fun of you. I have been through hard times where people actually bullied me about these kinds of situations. What I really do is just talk to teachers and ask tutoring from them. It really helps me and I get to speak it very well and learning what is right or wrong to say. Right now I am already great and at the right pace of speaking Filipino.

I have not been able to work on any transcription sites now online because I can seem to really grab an accent effectively. I just try to take a test on one of the site and I didn't do well on it. So I'm going to learn better before taking the test again.

I was going to take a test to work for an online transcription company, but that was right before I read some not so positive reviews about the work expectations of that company. I am not that bad with accents, except for the really heavy ones. I think just like you, I would have made it out just fine in good time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Most reviews for transcription are negative. The thing with transcription is that it's a lot of work. You can transcribe an audio hour which is 60 minutes for 8-12 hours and end up making 5dollars. To most people that is unacceptable and not a very good use of your time. However I think that transcription requires practice and patience. Before you know it you can make good money from it.

If you are not familiar or accustomed to a particular accent, it was really hard for you to understand. Transcribing videos with subjects using a different accent will double the difficulty of you. When I found out that transcribing videos will consume so much of my time, I drop it. It's not fit for my schedules and can affect my other activities.

I’ve always lived in very multicultural areas so I haven’t ever found accents to be too difficult to understand. I’ve also worked in a lot of customer service based roles where you’d be dealing with people from all over the globe. Practice certainly helps!

I have tried some transcription jobs before as but I am having a hard time in understanding how is it working. I fond to be very tough as I don't know how to pass the qualification test and end up not finishing it which resulted from not being accepted from the transcription jobs. I find it very hard to understand the different accents of the different language that we have all around the world which push me to stay away from this kind of work as I am not doing better from it.

We have the same dilemma. I find it hard to transcribe their conversations. Sometimes I don't get what they talking and misheard it. I think I failed on my tutorials.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I tried the tutorials in transcription and it's hard to understand what they are talking. Some accents are hard to understand and they talk so fast. I always pause the recordings and it took me hours to transcribe their conversation.

Transcription job is really hard. I tried a different platform but I'm really having a hard time understanding the speaker because of their accent. And there's a lot of reviews that transcription will take a lot of time to finish a single conversation.

It does consume significantly more time than what the audio minute of the file that you are transcribing and you are gonna be paid just on that audio minute. It is not worth it if you ask me, you can sink your time on another task that will be more enjoyable and can pay you better.
