Do you write your print book or your eBook first?

Do you write your print book or your eBook first?

I tend to write my books using  H1, H2 and sometimes, if I have to, H3. I do this for what you might call the core draft. My reasoning is that it is then easier to format the eBook as these are the only headings you should use, but in print, the headings will come out fine anyway. However, beyond that, the way you format for print is different to how you format an eBook. Usually, we want both print and eBook versions. My question is, what do you do? Do you write an eBook and then work on the formatting of the print book, or do you work on the print book fromat and then strip out the parts that are irrelevant to the eBook?

I actually haven't tried publishing e-books yet, but I always have plans on publishing my unpublished stories. Well, in my case, I just use notepad or MS word to encode my work.

Printing a book is a very great but also critical step which should only be taken as soon as one has convinced themselves that they are ready to put their work out there. It is important to have tested the market though with a draft in the form of an e-book.

Personally, I have written a lot of work but I'm yet to publish any of it as ebook but sooner rather than later, I'm definitely going to be publishing my first ebook and it's something in poetry.

Hopefully, it's going to be very good and lots of people who are fortunate to have access to it would love it.

I published my first eBook. It needs fewer words. Am now trying to fill it up with words so that I publish a paperback.

I haven't written a book yet but my understanding is that you just write the story of the book before you do the formatting. When you start with the format of the header and titles, you will be influenced by the format that you may lose your balance in the contents. But if you write the contents first without any formatting then you can have full concentration on what you are writing. When you are done with the contents then that is the time to design the format of your e-book or printed book.

I agree with you. First things first. You should know how to finish your work step by step. I think it is more practical and more convinient to write your works in an ebook format. If that ebook clicks for you, then it can be the right time for you to print them out especially if your work have great demand. Publishing a book is very expensive and you should consider that.

If you want your book to be available right away and without delay then I say you can opt for an ebook release first and have the print to follow. But if you have a lot of time and wouldn't mind having delays then I guess print first then an ebook. It all depends on how fast you want your book to be available for your readers! Good luck!

Personally I’d do print book first and then ebook, unless I was solely releasing an ebook. Usually print books tend to be longer than ebook versions so I’d want to have the full meat and bones there before I’d work out what content was appropriate to include in an ebook version.

Exactly! My first publication was a magazine project work carried out in my 200 levels in the university when I was studying Mass Communications. We took a course called Magazine production 101 and I was given production of a magazine as my project.

eBook, of course. It's a lot more easier, and it's cheaper. Myself, if my eBooks would be popular enough, then I might start printing one. But printing first, just for the heck of it simply isn't right, when you don't have an audience. Especially nowadays, people wouldn't even bother going to the book store to get it, but rather search it on the internet.

I also think Ebooks are way cheaper and more convenient to produce than printing hard copies of books. Others' way of determining if that can produce physical books is by the success of their e-books too.

I would work on the E-book first. I think that the future of books is e-books. I know that some people cannot read e-books and prefer print, but with the advent of climate change and our efforts to conserve, I think that print books are coming to an end. I'm not sure about the formatting of each, I always thought that both formats were the same, I thought all authors write e-books and simply print them to make print books.

You have a great point, with people nowadays being so concerned with tress and the usage of paper, e-books would definitely be the norm in the future.

The software I use can save files in different formats. So I would just format the book as I would want it to appear if it was printed and then save the file as a .htm file. That would preserve the formatting so it would be easier to convert that file into any other format afterwards.

I would prefer writing the print book first. It would be much easier and be nice to distribute especially to those lovers of books. E-books is a simple and easier way for sure to get across because it just needs to be uploaded on websites that provide reading books online. Once you upload it anyone from around the world can receive it. Yes that is a good solution but printing it is still the old classic version of things. So for sure I would go with print book first.

I'm still a little bit old school when it comes writing. In as much as I do agree with how good modern technological development and innovation have changed everything, I still take part in what we used to familiar with.

I think it is more convenient to write an eBook first and then work on the formatting of the print book. The first one is easier to do than the latter which also gives you a chance to publish the eBook first. Just do things one at a time to be organize and have a clear path of what to do next.

Am on publishing my first book with Amazon. It is entitled The Lonely Stones. Am going to publish it as an Ebook before I make the paperback. The cover is already designed and the print is ready. It remains to download the manuscript

Wow! That's such a great achievement. I haven't actually done publishing any book on popular platforms or even publishing a hard copy of my stories. I just hope that I'll be able to finish my stories with great feedbacks in the future and be able to public them in Amazon too.
