FAKE PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

FAKE PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Fake people on social media! I've read somewhere that about 40% of accounts on social media are fake. And I agree with that statement.
Have you ever had a friend(boy or a girl) that has some fake accounts? I know i had a couple of those.. The study said that every third person has 1 or 2 fake accounts. Do you agree with that or you don't? I know i do, there are a lot of fakes out there, especially fake girl accounts with the provocative posts... I really do not understand those people...

You are quite right. There are so many fake accounts these day Many enough to make me think twice before accepting any friend requests. That includes requests from people I know. This is because some people have been known to clone the accounts of others in order to use the cloned accounts for no their no good purposes. The thing about social media is, any one can be anyone. The risk of that is a lot of fake accounts and fake businesses as well. We all just have to be careful.

The way I think is there are much more fake accounts than genuine ones.

  • There are clone accounts.
  • There are double and even triple accounts.
  • There are dormant accounts due to many factors including loss of password.
  • There are accounts used for malicious intentions.
  • There are accounts of those who purport to be celebs.

It really depends of how they use it. Some times they can make money from it.

This is so true. These types of accounts are everywhere on social media and it's sickening, especially when they are used for things that degrade other people.

Yeah. I'm just sad that people use them to hurt others. Like by saying a bunch of mean and insulting stuff. The most common example is the comment section. That's where we can find poorly chosen words.

Yes, I know a person who buys dummy account just to bash a certain politic party.

True, I've encountered a lot of fake accounts on social media, most of this people act tough but what they really is are people hiding behind their keyboards, they're called Keyboard Warriors.

I agree with this, I have known someone who has been victimized by malicious intentions. The account handler use my friend's face and comment sexual things on some post.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

burgosmichael24
Yes. I agree with you. Social media are full of fake accounts or dummy accounts and I have seen a lot of them. Most of them create that account for a specific reason. Some made that account to bash someone without disclosing their identity. Though we know that most of them do that for the wrong reasons, unfortunately there's nothing that we can do about that.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, it is sad how they spend time on social media making fakes accounts just to bully some people or celebrity.

I agree with you, I have this friend who have a poser and his poser tried to ruin his reputation by commenting sexual things on some post.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, this is totally right. Since Social Media has rules and regulations, they prefer not to expose their information so they able to create fake accounts to message someone they hate or bash some celebrities they find annoying. Sometimes they intentionally create fake or poser accounts just to involve other person or they want to scam anyone and pretend to be a seller or reseller and uses other features and pictures just to make it more legit even if its not.

Fake accounts are real and these accounts are called trolls also because they are not real. Let us be aware that all fakes has a bad motives and we should not let them fools us.

There's a lot of fake people in social media, you should be taking good care of it.

One time a person opened an account with my name on Facebook. It had all my names and photo. We reported it and it was removed. We must be wary of social media.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, you must report it immediately to Facebook so they can take action to it as soon as possible.

I had one. It was on Facebook. (the only reason I had it is because of a game that requires some kind of permission, so I would send a request to that profile and gave permission to myself ) Sure, there are a lot of fake profiles on Instagram, on other apps idk. I don't use them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It so happens Facebook does not even know the exact number of its subscribers. It ought to get rid of fake accounts. One can do it by first removing the dormant accounts.

Hello there!
It's not that 40% are fake, which I highly doubt (maybe 20-25%), but rather that not all accounts are confirmed by the documents of their users. It could affect the statistics greatly.
Also, there's a factor when account is used by a 3rd party which is authorized to comment on behalf of someone (usually famous people).

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

stbrians
Authorized accounts or not but I think fake accounts should be removed. It will make a cleaner social media. Things will be easier and body effective with a clean social media

Yes, there are many existing fake accounts in any social media platform. Others, used it fool others. This gives them fun and excitement. I read and heard a lot of stories of victims from any social media activity. Online Crimes are rampant nowadays. It's not always good to trust stranger. We should be very careful.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

stbrians
Careful or not but if the social media itself does not clear fake accounts then we are in for a rude shock. We do not have fake accounts determines a fact that make us befriend even hackers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jelineex
How can you clear a fake account? How will you distinguish it from real one? I don't know any system that detect fake account upon registration. We all know that fake accounts are made by person whom we barely don't know the motive. Categorically, they are just similar to a "typical user" like us but the only difference is they fool others. I maybe wrong but I think that social media has nothing to do with any crimes or wicked doings created by foolish individuals. It is only a program that's created for pleasure and business. It is always the user that is held liable for his doings. After all, even without social media scammers or fake people do exist.

A lot of people are into social media and some use it for marketing purposes, using fake accounts posing as a beautiful and oftentimes sexy girl while others as a handsome single guy. Some uses the names and photos of fake actors, actresses and other popular people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

stbrians
Why is this do? Does it mean that we are living a lie? We love to pry on innocent and unsuspecting people. It is not for fun but for ill motives.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Sadly I think it shows that as humans we are drawn to people who look a certain way. People create these fake profiles to prey on people - it’s not ethical but it seems to work from a marketing perspective.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Facebook alone has disabled 1.3 billion fake accounts and there are still fake accounts popping around like crazy even now. That 40% probably isn't far off from the actual estimation of fake accounts of all social media platforms. While some are used as a marketing strategy (bots) others make fake accounts for their own personal gain, maybe to feel more confident or to be able to feel what it's like to be someone else. Like living a different life. But they each have their own reasons for doing so.

I also had a friend who has a problem in terms of fake account. She only has 1 accoubt but theres others account that was been seen in facebook using her photos it is sure one of the fake account, we don't kbow the exact motives of the person making fake account of our friend. We already reported the account like that and some are already blocked in facebook but some are still exist. That's the other problem in social media.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It is really hard to trust people nowadays. They even make fake account for a reason that doesn't make sense. Some did it to keep privacy and some did it because they want to cheat. I also hate it, to think that you really can't easily trust someone becaude you msy not know, you are just one of their victims.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

stbrians
I still believe that it is the social media which encourage fake accounts. They want to prove they have traffic and cash in on the fact. If they decide enough is enough then take accounts will go into oblivion.

There is a lot of fake people out there especially on social media. Some just want to be famous, become someone they are not or just simply because they got nothing to do in their life. Being fake won't get you anywhere. You might become famous or rich but yet again you are not portraying the person you are not. So if I were you, those who are not being themselves should just stop and be yourself for once. People will judge you but at least you are being honest to a very important person, YOURSELF.

I haven't made a fake account using social media. I have tried though a fake identity using a cellphone through text and call. I was still young back then and social media is not a trend during those times. Maybe if the access of computers back then are just as common as today, I might have made one because when you're still young you tend to try things just for fun.

I agree that there are a lot of fake accounts on some social media sites and they are very rampant nowadays, I have a friend before who had set up a dummy account just to spy on people that she really hates. I really don't like this kind of practice since it is a kind of cheating that is not really worth to have. It is better to have one account that is really true than having to many accounts that are mostly fake and are intended only for some purpose.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well this really is not a surprise. Even in real world you got a lot fake people, so it is no wonder that social media would have a lot of those as well.

Social media gave people a chance to be whoever they want to be. Often people who are uncertain with themselves and people unsatisfied with themselves, takes this opportunity to create a new entity for themselves. Social media then has become an outlet of their inner frustrations, which often times, are suppressed in real world.

I’m not sure I understand or agree this discussion. What do you mean by fake people? Fake accounts? Are they bots? If you have more than one account or use a pseudonym for your account or you hire an assistant for your account how does that make it fake? I don’t think I agree with these accounts being fake. Maybe If you could explain further what you mean by fake people?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, even though it's weird and very fussy. I still think that we should go through the profiles of people who send friend requests especially on Facebook. Through that, you will know if the account is fake or not. Anyway, you'll know it through the number of friends, the photos, the posts and the comments of the friends.

Fake profiles is a reality of almost all the Social Media platforms. I do agree that a huge pecentage of the existing profiles on various Social media platforms are fake. People do tend to create multiple accounts to remain anonymous and engage in conversations with strangers. Some of these fake profiles are often misused to cheat people and commit financial frauds. Inspite of all the promises made by the companies like Facebook and Twitter we still have a huge amount of fake profiles existing on all these platforms.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. Sadly, most fake accounts are for people to do bad to others.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's pretty significant! I always assumed a portion of social media accounts were fake but had no idea that the percentage was so high. I'm surprised that social media sites haven't tried to take more of a stand against that happening. It's quite worrisome - but I don't really know how you stamp it out entirely.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I wouldn't have even thought 20%! It seems like it's a big problem. I worry why people would be creating fake profiles - for trolling, or for fraudulent purposes, maybe.

It is a coincidence that a high school classmate messaged me today about a friend request she received from someone. She said I am a mutual friend so maybe I know the person. Truly I know because she was our batch mate in school and maybe she didn't remember. That is one good way of screening the people that you accept as friends in Facebook. That will prevent fake people to be on your friends list.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

allyn2017
I agree with you, only accept people you know.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I'm always dubious if I get a friend request from a person I don't know, and with no mutual friends - it always means that I decline those requests just from a safety perspective. Not worth the risk in my opinion!

Yes I do that also. If there are other people whom I'm not familiar, I will not accept them as friends. I'm just making sure just to avoid being harass and bullied in social media.

In highschool I had a lot of fake accounts, there's this world called rpw, it's like you are making an alternative world where you can portray celebrities and live the way they live in virtual world. Also, since I am afraid of discrimination before, I made one account where I can post my poems and stories.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I can understand why you would want a fake profile for some anonymity if you're posting personal stories or poems. I just worry when there are fake profiles used for illegal activities like trying to steal people's identities or even for trolling other people. Online bullying is a big thing and I think some people make fake profiles for that reason.

I think social medias such as facebook, twitter and instagram should require every users to show a valid id ( school id, postal id, passport id....) to secure that every user is a real person and to avoid fake accounts. They should also implement a policy that one person can only have one account.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adrian120501
Yeah there are so many people using fake accounts nowadays. Maybe some of them just want to have a secret boyfriend and girlfriend or to get a lovelife hahaha some are scammers also haha and its popular in all social media i think to have a fake accounts. Also some of them make fake accounts to have a glimpse for their crush in social media secretly hahaha that's what think.

I haven't dealt with many fake accounts on twitter. Some really obnoxious or controversial ones who've followed me. But that's like only 6 total in the 9 years I've been on twitter. I've never had direct conversations with those people, I've just immediately blocked them. Now on Facebook, I can smell a fake account a mile away. So if I get a friend requests from an account that looks 'suspect,' when I visit the persons page my suspicious are usually confirmed. I just deny their request and block them as spam.

I didn't know that it's already at 40%, it's so many. I have dealt with some fake accounts before. The problem with this accounts is when they used it to scam others. My friend was almost scammed before. The fake account was asking for money.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I used to work for a bank in the card fraud industry and it’s sad how often people get scammed by fakes like this. It happens often where someone will create a fake profile and pretend they’re in love with someone. They create a whole fake relationship and then start asking for money or credit card details. Sometimes people’s loneliness wins I guess.

It's not new that there are fake account in social media. As social media site is easy access and easy to create new account. Some people take advantage of other that lacks of knowledge in this situation. So you better do background check and research before you trust someone in social media.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
That’s a key word you mentioned there - trust. It can be very easy to take things at face value online, but sometimes we do need to ensure that we are only trusting things when we have had a chance to question them.

Gotta be vigilant against potential scammers and fraudsters!

I spend a lot of time NOT adding people to Facebook. If you go to the profile, you can tell the fake ones as they have only a few friends or pictures and there is a kind of "feel" about them. One guy was asking me for money claiming to be my friend. Unfortunately for him, my friend was on the phone to me as he was asking. She was able to confirm he was a fake and the account was reported.

There's a lot of fake accounts on Facebook, but what is a fake account? Is not using your true name considered as a fake account? What about Pen Names, Aliases, Nicknames and Pseudonyms, are they also considered fake? I do think that the word Fake Account is a bit vague, don't you think?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
Exactly, I have an account where I post my poems and since I don't want to be exposed I used fake name for it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Corzhens
I have personal friends who have been sending me a friend request with another name. They would send me a message that says the friend request was their second account. My question is what for, why the need for a second account? Anyway, I am not really comfortable with a friend in Facebook having more than 1 account so I don't accept a second account. With the fake name maybe I can live with it as long as the profile picture is real so I would be able to identify whose account is it.

There are fake accounts on Social Media and I think there is nothing wrong with that since it will just depend on how he/she will use it. I have a fake account on Facebook or I should say a dummy account. I use this account to find out if someone blocks me on Facebook. There are friends on facebook that will just disappear and I am not sure if they blocked me or just deactivated their account. By using my dummy account, I will be able to know if he blocked me. I don't know if there are other ways to find out if someone blocks you on Facebook but this is the way I do it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Fake accounts should be banned if the account handler has done something wrong but there are some dummy accounts that jas purpose.

I think that social media sites such as the Facebook should impose some punishment for those people setting up some fake accounts so that it can be stop and be avoided from increasing in number. Having some fake accounts to some social media sites can give chaos and hatred because they can used this fake accounts for illegal activities which should be avoided as early as of now so that no one will be hurt or be scammed from it.
